The meeting in Absalom with Drandle Dreng nearly a month ago was brief, as always. "I have a routine mission for you, though a dangerous routine mission." the old man whispered in the great hall in the Grand Lodge. Suffering from a cold and weak from lack of food and rest, the old venture-captain looked quite possibly the worst you’d ever seen him. Through wracking coughs he explained, "An ally of ours in the Land of the Linnorm Kings--Rognvald Skagni--is writing a lengthy report on the state of government in the northern countries of Avistan. I received a letter from him just yesterday requesting several key documents from the vaults here to help him finish the report." Venture-Captain Dreng patted a large, heavy-looking chest next to him. "These are the documents, and I need you to board a ship north to deliver them to Skagni."

Dreng tried to stand at that point, but a fit of coughing sent him back into his seat. He gestured for a well-dressed, impeccably kept man standing in the shadows of the room to approach and whispered raspy orders to him. The man picked up a small pouch and a large key and handed them both to the party.

"Venture-Captain Dreng is unwell, as you can see. He wished me to give you this key and this pouch of gold. The key opens the chest, and the gold will buy you passage and get you from the Linnorm coast to Trollheim, where Skagni resides. Whatever you do, do not let the chest out of your sight and do not, under any circumstances, allow it to be searched. These documents are for Mr. Skagni’s eyes only. Are we understood?"

Dreng’s nameless servant waited for a reply and then smiled.

"Good. Now run along; Venture-Captain Dreng needs his rest."

You may prepare for the journey as you wish, but it is going to get cold. Average daytime temperature is just above freezing and nighttime temperatures drop to -5 degrees F. Be sure to pack accordingly. I will be enforcing cold-weather rules.

Additionally, the chest of documents presents a small challenge. The chest is 2 feet wide, 4 feet long, and 3 feet deep. It’s made of heavy oak bound with iron, and locked with an enormous, finely crafted steel lock. The chest weighs 100 pounds, and it’s imperative that it be kept safe--failing to do so means a loss of respect within the Society.

When everyone has prepared, we will proceed.

After considering the direction the mission is heading, Thallin starts to head out, to gather a few provisions for the trip. He pauses at the door for moment, then turns and observes the large box resting on the floor. Who is going to take charge of the hulking box, key, and pouch of gold?

Thallin stands quietly for a few moments then speaks up once more.
I’m going to run into town for a few things. I’ll be back shortly. If you need me to carry any of these items let me know and I’ll do what I can.

A tall blonde man with a long beard and dressed in the style typical of the Ulfen steps forward. His faint halo above his head, and golden glowing eyes reveal that he is not entirely human.

"My homeland is harsh and cold. I suggest everyone bring warm clothing for the journey. I suggest that once we reach the Land of the Linnorm Kings we purchase or rent a wagon and horse. On the way to Tronjheim, I will look after the chest. I suggest that someone else carry it's key."

A haggard old woman stood patiently in the back during the briefing. At first you wondered why she was there. Possibly she was someone's mother? But as you had a chance to look at her further, with her torn ragged clothes, and thin tangled hair-- well, no one that haggard couldn't be magic. When spoke it confirmed your suspicions. She had a weird voice, feeble and ancient-sounding, but it a hard harsh sibilant edge to it, that made her sound vaguely dangerous.

"Yes, I think," said Cascabelle ponderously. "Those are good ideas. I think that the key is best suited for myself. People wouldn't imagine that I might have a chest of treasure, would they? It'd be out of character."

Cascabelle pecked dubiously at her torn robe, which was shedding fabric even now. She hated spending money on clothing, and preferred garments that went with her ruined aesthetic, regardless. But cold was cold.

"No sense in being a slave to fashion. I'll follow you into town Thallin, and get some appropriate winter wear. What else will we want? A tent? Some rations? Oil to get a fire started?

I agree with Kyrin. I have spent a lot of time in the north as well and, I think it wise to prepare for a very cold climate.

Thallin spends a moment considering something, then pulls the hood from his fur lined cloak off his head.

I am concerned about the wagon idea. We might come across harsh terrain that will prove unpassable for a wagon. Then there is the extra cost to ship the wagon from here to Trollheim.

Thallin accepts the last item from Dreng’s servant. After tucking the pouch of gold away into his pack he looks over to Cascabelle and nods.
I would enjoy the company.

Thallin then acknowledges Casabelle and her question. All of the things you have suggested would make traveling a little more comfortable. I would consider your personal comfort primarily at this point. I’m sure our companions are seasoned adventures and, have already prepared for this trip.

Over the course of the trip, Thallin has thought back many times to when the group first met. He had many reservations about his new companions and, the complexity of their backgrounds. His new friends were defiantly different, yet he couldn’t have asked for a stronger group of adventurers to travel with.

As Thallin sat back quietly, to enjoying the remainder of the trip, he considered each of his new friends.

First there was Kyrin the Brave. Like most brothers of the north he was strong both of body and spirit. He took charge of the mighty oaken chest and nobody would dare question his ability to carry it. I wouldn’t want to be on the business end of his axe. A strong front liner if ever there was one.

Then there was Cascabelle. A perfect example of why you can’t judge a book by its cover. An old haggard woman my arse. Feeble, week, poorly dressed, with a little bit of, ………..oh ya! POWERFUL MAGIC! I dare not ask about her origins. Her inner strength will undoubtedly turn the tide of battle someday.

Bentuk and Ing, what can I say? A powerful combination and, a force to reckon with. I have heard about people that could control great beings from other worlds. I can only imagine what this weaver of magic and his companion are capable of.

Finally there is Taalaako. A half-bird, half-man creature that says he belongs to a race called the Tengu. I find this creature captivating. I find myself pondering many questions about Taalaako but don’t want to offend the creature. Like myself, he seems to be trained in the art of the shadow. It’s obvious we are a world apart yet, I feel a kinship to the feathery guy. I really, really have to know if he can fly. It will be interesting to see him in action.

Thallin turns to the rest of the group and decides to break the silence. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly month since we met with Drandle Dreng. I wonder how much longer we have till we arrive in Trollheim.

"Harrow? No, my dear, never had much truck with fortune-telling. What's the point? Always get The Hag, don't I? Don't need cards to tell me that.

Cascabelle laughs-- a throaty full laugh of someone who has lived a long time. Just the same, you notice that her teeth grow noticeably sharper and longer as she relaxes.

"My sister's good at fortune-telling, though. Looks just the part, too. I'll introduce you if we live long enough."

The directions to Skagni’s home provided by Venture Captain Dreng’s assistant are unclear, but after a few wrong turns due to poor handwriting, you finally locate your destination. But there’s a problem:

Where the directions indicate Skagni’s house should be stands only the charred husk of a burnt-out building. Bits of burnt timber and ruined furniture lie scattered about, but if anything remained after the fire, it seems to have been picked over and looted. Though most of the walls are blackened with soot, a patch along the former front of the residence still shows relatively clean, white walls. Smeared across those white walls, written in reddish-brown letters four feet tall, are the words, "Pathfinders go home."

The look on Thallin’s face says more than words alone could possibly express.

It would seem the lengthy report on the state government that Skagni was working on didn’t have a very good conclusion.

Thallin carefully removes a mighty composite longbow from his back. The bow’s massive, carved arms seemed to be in an endless struggle against a powerful bow string that held it together like a finely crafted instrument.

After firmly positioning the mighty bow in his right hand Thallin begins looking for clues.

Taalaako surveys the grisly scene. "Whatever happened here, someone was sending a message to our organization. We must be especially cautious."

He pulls out his double chicken sabres, preparing for the worst. He glances back at the all-important chest, currently residing in a small wagon and being pulled by a donkey. He takes the reins of the donkey in one hand and pulls it along, wary to leave the chest out of his sight for even a moment.

Asking Ing to stay with Thallin and Taalaako (so as to avoid frightening the locals), Bentuk strolls up to the nearest door and knocks. His slightly demeanor is that of a simple traveler who's lost their way, but his questions are decidedly eventful.

Cascabelle looked neither surprised or impressed by the ashen remains of the home. "Arson, passably done."

Cascabelle searches through for the debris for any clues, a body, or particularly any signs of a fight.

Take 10 on perception.

"I wonder why they'd burn everything. You could send the message without the arson..." Cascabelle trailed off into silence. This lasted a beat longer than you expected, but when she spoke it was with a kind of delight, as she had fond arsonist memories herself. "In fact, the arson could only complicate things. This wall collapses, or gets blackened or interfered with by looteres and there's no message at all..."

Cascabelle makes a few incantations as she surveys what's left of the wreckage.

Cast Detect Magic, (and more improbably,) Detect Poison

Satisfied with the result, she opined, "They're looking for Skagni's documents, of course. They couldn't find them, or they found him and he wouldn't tell them where they were, and they torched everything, just to be sure. The only trick is, who are they?"

I hope you are right Cascabelle. If they didn’t get what they were looking for, then there is a chance Skagni is still alive. I’m guessing they burned everything in an attempt to eliminate any evidence. Maybe Bentuk will have some luck with the locals.

The fact that Skagni was working on a report about the state of government is concerning.

Neither magic nor poison are to be found in the area. The locals claim to know nothings, save that the house burned down a few weeks ago.

Moved Bentuk up one square so he's actually in range for grease. I ALSO forgot to say it's DC 14, but it was listed on my sheet correctly. (Unlike ??DC 13 read magic? what)

Kyrin stands by the chest, insuring that it is safe.

The remaining thug moves to engage Cascabelle, slashing with an axe. Fortunately, the blow is ill-timed and misses the Pathfinder.

Thug vs. Cascabelle: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Bentuk searches his memory, trying to think who the thugs might be working for, but comes up empty. With a flick of his wrist and a single word, he conjures a spot of grease beneath the leader.

Leader Reflex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13

"Order are orders," the leader growls, "And my orders are..." His words are lost as he slides on the grease and falls prone.

The thug attacking Cascabelle howls in pain as the eidolon's teeth sink into his shoulder.

Thallin watched in amazement, as the last thug was able to fight through Casabelle’s spell. The man looked intent on ending the sorceress’s rally. Luckily the man was clumsy. His swing fell short, leaving Cassabelle in a head to head fight for her life.

Thallin recognized the significance of the pathfinder banner. With renewed vigor, he realized he couldn’t let the banner fall. The last thug had over committed himself to reach the sorceress. In turning a blind eye to the rest of the group he may have willingly step through Pharasma’s door.

Thallin moved fifteen foot to the southeast taking up a tactical spot next to the paladin. If you want to join the fight Kyrin, I can fight from here, and defend the box.

Thallin once again exerted all of his strength to draw back the mighty bow. Taking his time to carefully set his aim on the thug threatening Cassabelle. Patiently Thallin watched for an opening.

Eventually the opportunity presented itself, giving Thallin the opening he had been waiting for. With all the precision as he could muster, Thallin released the bows might. The Deep thrum sounded out as if to alert the god of death that another soul would soon be on its way.

Cascabelle's eyes gleamed for once, not with her serpentine aspect, but simply with an old lady's sense of mischief. The thug's out-of-sight leader calling out an incomplete order? If there was every an opportunity to sew chaos, this was it.

And Cascabelle loved chaos.

Seeing her enchantment land, however slowly, on her assailant, she backed southwest and ghost sounded the rest of the thug's orders.

"... to fall back! I repeat, fall back!"

She tried not to smile, although her teeth now lengthened to an unseemly degree. Her companions would learn what she was, if they hadn't already.

If they don't run away:

Ing slithers around to put the third thug off-guard once again. "As Bentuk says, we meant you no harm." It lashes out with its jaws, then tries to slam its tail against the one it flanks with Taalaako.

5-ft. step northeast/whichever direction puts Ing in a flank with Taalaako.

The thug before Cascabelle throws his shield up in front of him to catch Thallin's arrow, but it seems to have been an autonomic reaction, more than a conscious one.

Cascabelle backs up and barks an order in a voice that perfectly mimics that of the thugs' leader. All three thugs turn to look at their leader with surprise on their face (all three are flat-footed for the next round).

The thug that had originally attacked Taalaako first now backs towards his fallen leader, axe still at the ready. The bird-man steps back and slashes twice at the other thug facing him, but only manages to land a glancing blow.

The leader struggles to his feet and shouts, "No, you idiots! That isn't me! It's the hag! Get them!" To emphasize his point, he hurls a second axe at Cascabelle. The weapon hits her squarely in the chest, sending her to the ground with a grievous wound. Cascabelle takes 9 points of damage and falls, bleeding.

The thug still facing Taalaako glances over his shoulder, before turning back to his target and slashes with his axe. He barely manages to clip the tengu on the shoulder. Taalaako takes 3 points of damage.

10 ft. range increment, so the natural 20 would still auto-hit you but it should be a -8 on the confirmation roll, so it might be significantly less damage...

I'll revise if Taalaako would rather charge #1 than fight #3, but otherwise this setup seems fine. I mean, unless Cascabelle is actually down and Kyrin doesn't move to heal her, in which case Ing will stay where he is and be ready to take AOOs.

Totally right, Cascabelle, I apologize. Amateurish mistake and I apologize. With the -8 and the +4 AC from soft cover, and he does not have the Precise Shot feat, so he is at a -4 for throwing into melee, means that the crit does NOT, in fact, confirm.

EDIT TO ABOVE:
Cascabelle is hit by the axe, but it is a solid hit to her arm. Cascabelle takes 4 points of damage.

Again, my most profound apologies. This is why you should never post when you are in a hurry, but I was anxious to get the next move up.
