Background:

Thallin watched as the winter’s first snow briefly revealed itself on a nearby stone outcropping. Watching as the light flake of frozen moisture withered, and then became a droplet that rolled down the face of the great bolder. Where most men would see the oncoming inclement weather as a sure sign of rough days to come, Thallin welcomed the snow. In fact he thrived in such conditions and enjoyed the memories that it brought about. It had been too long since he had last visited his adoptive mother. He missed the cold of the north and the snow elves he considered to be his family.

Thallin spent a lot of time lately thinking about his younger days. He remembered playing with his neighbor’s kids, taking turns hiding in the snow until the others found them. He remembered the hearth that wormed his mother’s house and the long stories she told about his birth parents. She spoke of a nomadic tribe that called themselves The Hendoran Clan. Although they lived in close proximity to the snow elves the human tribe didn’t interacted much with them. His mother said the humans where very undefined in their ways and, it seemed like they survived on sheer will alone. She would spend a lot of time during her story elaborating on the ferocity of the storm that wiped out the Hendorans. She would say that not even her people would have survive in such extreme conditions. That was saying a lot considering the snow elves where probably the most accustomed to the harsh cold weather of the north. Shortly after the part about the storm, his mother would pull out an old mammoth hide blanket, then show the dilapidated thing to Thallin and explained how she came across it. After a moment to take in the visual prop, she would continue with the story. She said she was part of a small group that went looking for survivors that day. After a short pause for effect, she stated the only sign of life they came across, was a young child wrapped up in the mammoth hide. She told Thallin that he was the child in the blanket and that’s how he came to be part of her family. His mother would always finish the story by saying, “someday you will need to learn about your own people.” She never seemed happy about the prospect, but she always seemed to accept the fact. He suspected she knew he needed to embrace his human heritage in order to someday find happiness and a life of his own.

Thallin has lived among the humans of Absalom for the last two years. He has been trying to adapt to the new life style and has had a hard time with the change. His mother told him the best chance he had to fitting in would be to join an organization called The Pathfinders. Even after two years of embracing his so called heritage, he still looked forward to days like today to bring back his youth.

Thallin’s thoughts quickly snapped to his current situation, as he began rolling up a summons and then placed it in a scroll tube tied to his belt. While giving one last though to his his mother and the snow elves of his village, Thallin held out his hand to catch a nearby snowflake and then watched as it slowly melted away before heading out once again to the city in the center of the world.
