Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Kiana looks around, and then at Mr. Plugg. "No killing other crew. Scrounge our equipment. Those be the rules per Mr. Plugg."
Kiana eyes the 'Recruiters', staring each in the eye for a few seconds, and picks the one that looks the most nervous to meet her gaze.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
As she walks past the one she thinks is the most nervous when she looks at him, she sucker punch flurry's the SOB.
Flurry (Non Lethal): 1d20 ⇒ 14
Flurry (Non Lethal): 1d20 ⇒ 9
"I guess I'll start scrounging my equipment from you, since you're the lousy scag what stole my old equipment." She tells the man.
Hopefully he won't have seen it coming.
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
God this dice roller sucks.

Malyoxa Zigair |

Assuming she's roused from unconsciousness:
Malyoxa's ribs hurt, but, worse, she exposed a fundamental weakness to these pirates. For all her dark allure, she wasn't strong enough. She would have to rethink her approaches. The strix pretty much shattered whatever minor kinship they could share, she was loud and abrasive. Yet, such a person wasn't without their uses. These fools' attention would be fixed to the winged wonder for the most part. She smiled internally through the pain.
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
So Plugg was lying, big surprise. She would have to find her effects at some point, but not until something changed in her favor. Then she saw the strix pick a fight. Yes, she was useful. The drow approached one of the pirates.
"Give me a dagger or I'll rip your throat out," she growled, full of malice and rage.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
If she gets what she wants:
Satisfied, Malyoxa heads below and finds a dark corner of the ship to claim. She slides the dagger into her waistband and returns to learn the "art" of swabbing.

![]() |
The frightened pirate hands over a dagger to Maloyoxa amidst laughter amongs his mates, causing him to redden in embarrasment.
Kiana's methods is more direct but also gains her instant emmity from the unfortunate's pirate's mates.
They gather and even Kiana would not be able to fight off all 5 of them armed as they are with belaying pins, cutlass and daggers.
"Enough!" Mr Plugg's voice cuts through the impending violence with the force of a cannon unleashed. Immediately the pirates stand down.
"A feisty one eh?" Mr Plugg scowls before continuing.
"You'll earn your way here on this ship and I suggest very strongly that you return those very items you just took. It'll go very badly for you if you don't."
Assuming Kiana does so.
Mr Plugg smiles a cruel smile.
"So you do know how to follow orders girlie. Mark it well. It may mean you seeing another sunrise. Now all of you clean the decks and get ready for tonight."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 1 - It begins.....with an object lesson
All of the crew is called to deck at dusk to witness an 'Event'. Finishing your work whatever that is, all of you are hauled or 'invited' to view this.
Apparently entertainment is meant tonight. A man is brought up with his hands bound behind his back. This is Jakes Magpie, a pirate caught stealing from the quartermaster, his confession obtained by a rather severe interrogation at the hands of Mr. Plugg and Master Scourge, involving knives, hooks and ropes. This unfortunate you have had the pleasure of meeting.
His confession seems to silence the crowd and he is sentenced to keelhauling. Any confusion about his punishment is dispelled as all of you watch as the man is tied up and slowly, so agonisingly slowly brought below ship as Mr Plugg pulls on the rope to bring the unfortunate man down to his doom, his screams mercifully cut short abrupty as he goes in.
What comes up isn't pretty though and the mangled carcass is soon thrown over board to feed the sharks.
The lesson is clear. Don't steal and get caught. Every mistake will cost one his/her life.
Mr Plugg turns around and seems to direct it to everyone though he looks mostly at all of you.
"Arr you swabs, get ye going or feel some stinging. Lesson is over mateys and I hope arrrrr.....you get the drift or ye be drifting, ye mangy dogs."
Mr Plugg was enjoying himself as he tugged the rope and he seems an old hand at this. Maybe too old an hand at this.

Yuki Okano |

Sure, these guys were creepers. Sure, the chances of death were high. Sure, it was tough work, but Yuki can't help but smile throughout the first day as she's finally back working as a pirate. Besides, she had died once before so it held no special dread for her any longer. In some respects, being alive could be a lot worse.
During Magpie's keelhauling, she looks a little uncomfortable. Clearly, despite her claims of experience, she hasn't witnessed such cruel and unusual punishment very often.
When it was finished, she looks at the other crew members, trying to gauge which ones also felt uncomfortable, and which ones seemed to have enjoyed it.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Heal: 1d20 ⇒ 2

Malyoxa Zigair |

Malyoxa watched the keelhauling with disinterest. Making spectacles of death were something the drow were used to doing, something that had no appeal to her. A quick death had far more merit than this show, for a multitude of reasons. Mr. Plugg was no better than the drow she swore to kill. One day, he would meet his end, Calistria willing, by her hand.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Heal: 1d20 ⇒ 1

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana leans in to the one she'd pummeled. "You will find my equipment, and return it. Or I will make it my mission on this boat to make your life hell." She whispers to him, her voice cold.
Stepping back, she nods at Plugg. "You said scrounge, you didn't say how."
To the GM : Kiana is establishing that she's not a push over. Like any criminal gang, there's a pecking order, and she is ensuring she is not on the bottom of that order from the get go.
---------------------------
Kiana shows no emotion as the man is kealhauled. To her, it's a waste of time. The man should just be killed and tossed over board, or abandoned on an uninhabited island as punishment. Making it some sort of spectacle is distasteful. Then again, another human dead is always a good thing.

@Kiana noted. Your interaction with this particular pirate and his 'friends' comes with Social penalties just to let you know. Bonus to others though.
Most of the crew members stand with stoic expressions but the one that catches your eye is that of the woman who turns her head away and seems to mutter something beneath her breath.
Kiana gathers that the pirate she has pummeled is Jaundiced Jape by the way his mates help him up.

Malyoxa Zigair |

Malyoxa takes note of the woman repulsed by the execution. Another ally or, at the very least, another set of ears would be helpful. The drow takes to her duties and keeps an eye out for an opportunity to talk to her.

Tirmariah |

Day 0
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Tirmariah smiles at the strix's and the drow's creative scrounging. This should be interesting.
Day 1
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Heal: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (15) - 2 = 13
Tiah watches the keelhauling stoicly. The fool... no need to enjoy such gruesome business. She notes with some interest that one of the spectators seems repulsed by the display. I wonder who that is.

Yuki Okano |

Yuki also makes plans to speak to the woman who seemed be uncomfortable with the display when she gets a chance.
Once the keelhauling is over, the young woman looks around for a friendlyish looking male to ask questions of.

Kiana Sunbane |

Sorry, hope you weren't waiting on me. Things are wonky in my head. I didn't see much else for Kiana to respond to after the keelhauling. She's mostly just waiting for a shift assignment. She's not comfortable with all these humans around.

Thread's still not under my control yet.
The day passes uneventfully except that the new pirates (that means you) are given orders to scrub the deck clean.
Fort Save DC 10 to avoid being fatigued. Dex/Perception DC 10/15 to get the deck clean enough for biased eyes.

We can move this to a new thread if you like, just give us a link.
Fort: 1d20 ⇒ 6

The Deck is sufficiently cleaned to Mr Plugg's expectations as he does his inspections, flunkies in tow.
"Seems like it's adequate enough. You swabs may just be good enough..." Having said that he returns to the bunk.
The evening entertainment seems subuded but maybe because it's due to the loss of a crewmember or it could be because of the new crewmembers, namely all of you.
Most of the crew gives Kiana a wide berth owing to her earlier showing but a few either smirk or outright ignore her.
The 'recruitment team' seats in a corner along with Mr Plugg and they number 7 excluding Mr Plugg.
There is a lean man dressed in the flowing robes of an Osirion fashion.
A Gnome male holding a card game and winning quite handily it seems judging by the chips he has in hand.
A halfling woman having a drink but seated in a manner that brooks no nonsense from the rest.
A Red bandana clad man whose face seems fixed in a permanant scowl.
And then there is the rest of the crew and you.

Malyoxa Zigair |

Worn out from the day's work, Malyoxa slinks off to her dark corner and goes to sleep. Perhaps tomorrow would be better, perhaps not. It really didn't matter because she would survive either way. It was lonely in the dark, but hadn't she always felt that way?

Yuki Okano |

Despite feeling worn down by a hard day of work, Yuki decides to start stacking the deck in her favor by getting to know the other pirates. She starts with Rosie Cusswell since Sandara wasn't around and the other newbies were playing cards and/or scowling.
"Do you mind if I have a seat?" She asks politely as she finds an open spot to rest near Rosie, "Wow, this ship is run a little weird, huh? What do you think of it? I wish I knew who to talk to get my stuff back. They have a compass of mine that has a lot of personal value! My name is Yuki by the way. I think that sensible people should stick together, right?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana takes wing and stretches her muscles, swooping around the ship and going up and up in a spiral that brings her screaming down toward the ship, landing lightly on the crow's nest. She sits on the edge, balancing easily, and looks at whoever is there. "Looks like we're going to be on watch, so I figured I'd stop in and introduce myself. I'm Kiana. Don't cross me, and we won't have any issues. Not sure what I'm supposed to do other than caw like a crow if there's something amiss. Someone's got my pack and gear. Need my bow to shoot things. Unless someone wants me to throw pegs at enemies."
The above assumes the crow's nest watchman is not one of the 'recruitment' crew.

![]() |
You learn from Rosie the following:
Short but fierce, Rosie Cusswell has more muscles than most of the crew, and a fouler mouth than all of them put together. Rosie is from Port Peril, and like you was impressed onto the Wormwood’s crew. She has been on board 3 days and has already made her mark by threatening to chop off the hand of anyone who messes with her with her beloved handaxe. She has a healthy hatred of Mr. Plugg and Master Scourge, who did not take her threats kindly and had her flogged.
"Gah!!!
The man you startle looks lean with toussled hair above a rather plain looking face.
You recognise him as “Ratline” Rattsberger, apparently the fastest climber among the crew. His face though does give him a slight rat like feature hence the nick name.
"You startle me. An Ability like your would come in right useful in boarding. You could take out archers before they take us out!! Ermmm what are you by the way?"

Kiana Sunbane |

"I am a Stryx, Human. I have given you my name, what do you wish me to call you?" She asks, rather primly. "But yes, I have done such duties in the past. Being able to fire on high gives one an advantage, I can outrange any normal archer."

![]() |
"I'm Ratline or rat as some of the others call me. THe fastest climber you're ever gonna find though of course some claim otherwise. I have never lost a climbing race."

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana softens just a bit as she realizes that the pirate is just a youngster. Even human youngsters shouldn't be abused. "I have no doubt you are quite nimble and climb the ropes well. I am not so nimble and do not climb ropes, they can be problematic." She flexes her wings to make a point of how they'd tangle easily. "But I did not ask what others call you, I asked what you wished to be called. If you wish to be called Ratline, I will call you Ratline. If you have a true name you wish to be called, I will call you that."

![]() |
Rat's eyes soften and it's obvious that this hardened boy, no young man, has seen much to have aged him beyond his years.
"Call me Ral then. Most don't know my true name beyond a few others on this ship. The others don't care."
Ral “Ratline” Rattsberger is missing a few toes. Two from his right foot, the first and third toe.
One from his left foot, his middle toe.

Kiana Sunbane |

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 Oh well
Kiana nods. "Ral it is, then. What weapons do you know how to use? How good is your eyesight?" She asks. "I can use my fists or talons or elbows, or knees or whatever. However, I prefer a bow. My eyesight is pretty good at a distance, sometimes I miss things up close though."

![]() |
Ral grins.
"I'm usually not expected to fight but I'm mean with a dagger."
He demostrates his use of his small butter knife. Sharp end pointing outwards and fingers too close to the edge.

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana shakes her head. "Here, grip it like this..." She pulls a belaying pin from the mast, and shows him the proper grip. "If you hold it like that, when you shove it in someone's guts, it'll work the first time. But then you'll get blood on your hand and the handle, and the next stab your hand will slip and you'll slice your fingers open. You can't fight with sliced open fingers."

![]() |
As Ral adjusts his grip, the ship rocks violently as something emerges from the sea and takes flight, spraying seafoam and salty water everywhere. Kiana is thrown off balance and suddenly finds her self caught and steadied by Ral who blushes as he realises what's he done.
Both of you catch a glimpse of something scaled and winged before it flies out of sight into the night.
Ral's feet is on the wood and he isn't holding on to anything else. One hand on his knife, the other clutching your arm.
The crew are woken and most rush to the deck shouting in alarm, some of them are even armed as they rushed to see what could have happened.
Malyoxa hits the wooden planking rather hard as the ship suddenlt lists hard to the side sending most items not attached to the floor flying.
Yuki on the other hand with Tirmariah find themselves in no better position than their new crew mates as most have being knocked off their feet baring a few, particularly a tough looking half orc.

Yuki Okano |

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 10
"Wha-da?" Yuki mutters, having nearly fallen asleep on deck after her short, yet informative conversation with Rosie. She blinks a few times, then attempts to stand.
Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap. Maybe I really am a curse to any ship I sail on!

Kiana Sunbane |

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 Unbelievable
Kiana pats Ral's arm as a way of thanks as she regains her balance. She begins to scan the seas. "That was not something good, I am sure. How does that moron Plugg expect me to take out things attacking the ship without my bow. Or my other equipment." She growls in irritation.

Malyoxa Zigair |

Malyoxa is reasonably irritated at the sudden jolt. "Doesn't this captain know how to pilot a ship..."
She collects herself and the dagger she extorted from the crewmember and heads back on deck.

![]() |
The deck mills with crew members looking about for what caused the disturbance but nothing seems to be untoward here.
A little while longer though, Master Scourge dismisses everyone back into their bunks with a loud crack of his whip.
"Alright you swabbie, get yourselves back below decks and prepare for the morn."
As the party heads back below decks, they find that there is no space cleared for them at all.

Malyoxa Zigair |

Malyoxa returns to her dark corner. Seeing it occupied, she did what she had to do.
"Move or I slit your throat," she growls.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
I can't help that people are fond of their throats.

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana retrieves one of the nets used for hammocks for the crew, taking one that's hanging up if she has to (if she has to take one, she'll ask around to get one of the recruiter's hammocks). Then she'll fly up and string it up between either the Fore-mast and Main-Mast, or the Main-Mast and Mizzin-Mast, whichever has the most open space. Once tied up, she'll tell the boy... "Wasn't given a watch yet, I'll assume I have the early watch. Wake me when you go off watch, Ral. A tug on the rope will do it." Then she curls up in her hammock and goes to sleep, rocked to sleep by the swaying of the ship to and fro.
Kiana isn't too keen on claustrophobic ship interiors where it's easy to shove a shiv in someone's back while they sleep. She sleeps better outdoors, where she can hear the wind and feel the weather.

Yuki Okano |

Despite being worried that her presence was eventually going to sink the ship, Yuki is still dead tired and asks her hopefully new pal Rosie for help finding a bunk, asking to share hers for the night if necessary.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

![]() |
Your actions raised varied responses.
Malyoxa finds herself facing a wall of steel as the surrounding bunks reveal her recruiters.
"Better get your own, darkie. This here's occupied. Beware it's not your own throat getting cut." Forcing her back away from that corner.
Kiana surprises Ral when she reappears with her own hammock and net. He gestures to a spot below the crow's nest that has space for 2 people to sleep in. His face blushing.
"Here this spot is where I usually take my nap, you can have it first. It's warm and keeps any bad weather away."
Yuki finds herself sharing a hammock with Rosie as there doesn't seem to be enough hammocks to go around. Rosie turns to Yuki.
"We'll get some from the quartermaster tomorrow."

Malyoxa Zigair |

Malyoxa shrugs and walks away. That would be a mercy.
This wasn't the first uncomfortable place she found herself, she doubted it would be the last. So, she reclined against a wall and let her head sink down.

![]() |
Day 3 - Something stirs
The crew is subdued and though they don't give you problems, they don't go out their way to be friendly to you either.
Master Scourge seems to be in a foul mood today. Maybe that could explain the crew's behaviour.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 4 - Sewer Rats...Arrr!
Master Scourge seems to have had something against all off you as he sends the lot of you into the bilges to perform cleanup early in the morning.
You are sent upon by six large rats but due to their own emaciated states, the rats are summarily dispatched with little injuries of your own. You also manged to clear up the spider webs eliminating the little pests.
During the clean up however, you find the following:
A rather grimy Suit of leather armor
Three heavy maces
A buckler
A masterwork handaxe
A vial of holy water
A tanglefoot bag
Two tindertwigs
21 gp & 12 sp.
However your tasks were to clean the bilges and that would take some work seeing that all of you only have between yourselves are;
2 sacks
1 broom
3 cloths
4 facemasks

Yuki Okano |

"Hey, gals, would you mind if I took one of the heavy maces? I'm feeling a bit undefended, you know?" Yuki asks the others.
To aid in the clean up, the oracle casts Create Water, Mending, Guidance, and Mage Hand as necessary.

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana rolls up her sleeves and pants legs. She ties a cloth around her face, and gets to work. "I've done worse than this. Try burying 200 rotten corpses by yourself. When you're 11 years old. All it takes is work." She comments dryly. She just picks up the nastiest of things by hand and piles the bigger stuff in one spot, while cleaning as needed. "Take the mace, I don't use melee weapons. Or armor for that matter."

Yuki Okano |

"What about the other stuff?" Yuki inquires, looking through the inventory of found objects, "I bet we could buy or trade for a lot of the stuff they took from almost that handaxe alone! At least I could, I tend to travel light. Because I'm broke."

Malyoxa Zigair |

"Our belongings are on this ship, I believe," Malyoxa says. "If we have to barter for them, then so be it."
She waves her hand, rubbing out a stubborn stain. "Poverty isn't always a bad thing, Yuki, was it? A little hardship allows you to appreciate your windfalls."
Edited because I completely forgot we introduced ourselves.

Tirmariah |

Tirmariah grabs a facemask and the broom and gets to work.
"Yeah, take it. I prefer a cutlass or something light and pointy."
She listens Kiana's anecdote with a hint of sadness, but says nothing.

Kiana Sunbane |

Kiana shrugs. "If we can barter our stuff back, that will keep me from having to gut some people. I'm ok with that for now." She picks up what looks like a half-rotted rat and tosses it into a sack. "Well, now we know why Scourge was in a bad mood, he found out his sister was rotting down here in the muck."
