Only War: The Forsaken

Game Master Eradico Pravus

Cast from a blighted homeworld, the Guardsmen of Company F fight for the Imperium of Man along the war-torn Spinward Front. Despised by enemies, disparaged by allies, they have no one to trust except themselves for they are... The Forsaken!

I hope everyone had happy holidays. I survived another retaill season. Eradico, you did better than I have in shooting with Doc. Maybe this will break my string of bad rolls.

Happy new year to you all and sorry for the absence I had surprise vacations and just came back today ^^

Thanks, guys, and Deiros I hope you don't mind that I NPCed you a couple of times in your absence. Lorm, no problem, I'm sure Doc will come around!

Hi guys, Happy New Year!

This is crazy, but on the night I was prepared to update the other games, the fam and I have lost power. I was able to send a post in for this game from my phone (interesting experience with needing to format some of the text, yeesh) but files I need for the other games are on my PC. Hopefully this is only temporary, otherwise the DH and DW games will be resuming tomorrow.

Eradico, Sarge sorely wanted to charge the ork facing the commissar, but figured he is going to try to keep Scope, an active PC alive before an NPC...I knew my lousy Agility (hence the flavor about the gimpy knee) was going to come back and haunt me!

Apologies for the absenteeism, holiday evenings are basically consisting of me welded to the couch with an eight month old on my chest and I've not been able to wrangle posting time until late at night (generally past midnight). Normal service will resume in three-ish days once I'm back at home base.

Rook, no problems. Looking forward to both your campaigns re-booting.

And it's looking like it might be your Pats against my Broncos in a couple of weeks!

Thanks, Lark. I may not have time to update the Only War campaign until Tuesday night.

Male Half-Orc 9th lvl Cleric, 4th lvl Ninja, 1st lvl Black Flame Zealot

Looking forward to it Rook! Kinda fitting considering the new Dark Angel Codex being released later this week.

OK, slight delay with the restart but I should have some posts up today.

Happy to say that I have my copy of Only War as well, digital is great, but there is nothing like the heft of one of these core rulebooks in your hand.

Hope so, Eradico, as I think I said last year, we Pats fans are spoiled! Glad to see that Manning had the year he had for you guys, too, great comeback campaign for him. It doesn't get much better than Brady/Manning in January!

Thanks Bal! I saw some of the art from Dark Angels codex online, and the new vehicle minis, awesome looking stuff!

Now back in the saddle and easing back into things... awaiting the charge of the ork with some degree of bated breath.

Hello, hope everyone had a fantastic new year, but I regret to inform I will no longer be able to participate in this campaign. I leave for BCT very soon since the lack of employment doesn't leave me much of any other options. It was a fun as hell to share this campaign and to be allowed to participate and get to know you (albeit in a limited way).

I don't mind that you NPCed me =)

Deiros,

So sorry you have to drop out but thanks for serving our country. Like Bal said in the Sons of Jericho thread, this Only War game may very well be waiting for you when you are available to play again. Especially if this initial combat is any indication, lol.

Anselm is a great character and he will probably be making cameos from time to time based on the squad's vehicular needs (hint, hint).

Thanks for your exuberance and solid role-play.

Best wishes,
Eradico

Well good grief, Rook. Looks like I spoke a little too soon about a Pats-Broncos AFC championship game. What a melt-down. Talk about playing not to lose. Really bit them in the butt. :(

Sorry about the collapse, Eradico, that last touchdown in regulation was particularly brutal. I feel for the Broncos fans.

Don't think I'm not a little nervous that the Pats will be hosting the Ravens again. Ray Lewis' little inspirational retirement stunt is beginning to smack of destiny after that showing in Denver!

I just noticed, but technically the orc would not have hit Edwin because he is running, which imposes an additional -20 on the attack. Edwin is pretty tough though, so there is not need to ret-con unless you want to.

Nope, that's my bad! Grr... I'll go ahead and make a corrective post. Thanks for the correction, Ellipsis.

Something else I have not been taking into account (for the Orks on this one) is True Grit. Some of those critical hits should not have been as bad as they were so far this adventure. Sigh, having the hard-copy has been helpful.

I might as well make my mea culpa complete. I aborted the Orks charge at the last minute because when it looked like melee was imminent I looked in the rulebook to check on Shoota Boyz stats. And I discovered that they do not carry a melee weapon. Shoota only! Of course their range sucks so I felt like I needed to get them close anyways but imagine my embarrassment when I was ready to type a description for a nasty choppa only to find the scabbard empty.

Once again thanks everybody while I find my footing. Looking forward to when we can start having character interactions and I can increase the story-telling.

Hey Mark, a couple of questions on your last post.

The dagger is d5 + SB, so I get the d5 + 3 part. But where does the pen 2 come from? Is that a talent?

Secondly are you using a dagger or the unit's signature melee weapon, the chit-sickle which would have a pen 1?

Thanks. Just want to make sure I'm getting things right. :)

Never mind Mark, I got it. Ork #3 is in crit-damage territory and you have Street Fighting. Sorry!

EDIT: But are you using dagger or chit-sickle? Thanks!

WS 40, BS 20, S 35, T 35, Ag 35, Int 30, Per 30, WP 40, Fel 43, Wounds 14/14, FP 1/1

Using a mono-edged knife / dagger... I thought it had Pen 2 but could be wrong

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

Mono gives you +2 penetration and loses the primitive quality. So, if a dagger is pen 0, then a mono-dagger would have pen 2.

Sounds good. Thanks, guys. But looking back to our OOC thread last summer I thought we had granted the chit-sickle a Pen 1... guess I'll go ahead and make it pen 2 to match the dagger.

Rook, feel free to comment. Or did you envision the chit-sickle with a total of Pen 3? And... looks like your fears about the Pats were justified.

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

I checked my character sheet on the Wiki sight, and you gave the chit sickle a pen 2.

Dark Archive

Male Human Warhammer 40K GM

I'm trying to recall what we decided on for the chit-sickle as well, Eradico. Looking at my sheet profile sheet it looks like it is Pen 3 with the Razor Sharp Quality, but it is possible I just forgot to change it as I remember having a dialogue about adjusting it...I think what we settled on was Pen 2 with the Razor Sharp quality to simulate the penetrating edge of the weapon.

Yep, the Pat era of dominance is coming to a close I think. Something about the Ravens this season smacked of the whole team of destiny thing, and you have to feel good for Ray Lewis or you aren't a fan of the game. The Harbaugh Bowl should be plenty entertaining, though, and having Sunday nights free again just means more available time to post for the games!

Thanks for feedback on the chit-sickle.

Been another crazy work-week. Gave a quick post tonight and will try to fully update for next round tomorrow. Although it might not seem like it, I'm learning lots and hope to facilitate the combats more quickly in the future.

Bal, feel free to post an action for Scope for the top of the next combat round.

Looks that way Mark, combined with the mad knifery going on, I can't help but think of Riddick when I look at that profile pic.

Man these orks are hard to kill... Hathin might need to run back for his plasma...

This combat has been educational on a variety of levels. And I think I'm finally getting the mechanics down (insert eye-roll here).

No worries, Eradico, there are a lot of moving parts to think about in these games when it comes to combat, I still lose track of certain things.

Eradico, you forgot to add the orc's strength bonus to its attacks against Edwin. The attacks would have resulted in 9 wounds and 5 wounds, which are still blocked by armour and toughness, but just barely.

Ellipsis wrote:

I knew I was forgetting something! Thanks, Ellipsis, and let me say that Edwin is quite the tank with that carapace armor! :)

Eradico, just to save you some time. Edwin's attack has a penetration of 2, bypassing the ork's flack armor, gets reduced to 1 damage by the ork's toughness and then reduced by the toughness again by True Grit. Since True Grit cannot reduce the damage below 1, the ork takes the 3 damage rending critical to the body. This will stun it for one round and it must pass a challenging (+0) Toughness Test or suffer from blood loss (it doesn't stack so you can ignore this).

Thanks, Ellipsis. I will make a Blood Loss roll for the Ork on its next initiative.

Just a heads-up, everyone. I should be able to check PbP games this weekend but my posting may be limited as I will be attending Genghis Con in Denver this weekend. Should be a blast.

Thurs night: Only War!
Friday: Black Crusade and Deathwatch
Saturday: Space Hulk 28 mm team play (Marines vs Chaos vs 'Nids) and Rogue Trader

Woot!

Male Catfolk Shade (magically altered human) Monk-8, Mage-16

Enjoy yourself, Eradico.

Thanks. How awesome is my wife that she let's me do 40K roleplay on Valentine's Day?

Hey, I'm back and had a blast. Very interesting playing 40K roleplay face to face. Will post a few insights at a later time.

For now let me say my convention experience, although extremely fun, also gave me continued appreciation for our PbP efforts with DH, DW, and OW. Thank you.

Hey Bal,

Technically your sniper rifle with the reliable trait simply jams on a 00. And even if you did have a critical failure (which you did not) and hit a team-member it would "only" be the comrade since you rolled doubles, lol.

Let me know if you want to "unspend" that fate point.

Male Half-Orc 9th lvl Cleric, 4th lvl Ninja, 1st lvl Black Flame Zealot

I will take the jam then. Makes sense considering we have to beg, borrow, and steal used equipment in the first place.

OK, sounds good. :)

Feel free to edit your last post if you have time and want to. I'll move the scene forward in a bit.

Glad to hear you had a good time, Eradico. I, for one, would be very interested to hear how the games went and your take on things.

Hey guys, sorry for the disappearing act this week. Slammed time-wise w/work, kids, and my face-to-face TT group.

Rook, still planning on posting some reflections.

Wow. Consecutive 100s. Hilarious and sad all at the same time! :)

Its all good. Knew my rolls would balance out somewhere. Granted if the las rifle jams my character will never live it down.

Eradico, the fantasy flight forums indicate that true grit does indeed make orks tough bastards. Apparently the best way to kill them is with righteous fury, since this insta-kills mooks.

Also, make sure you are keeping track of which orks have fatigue, since they have a -10 to all tests. I don't think this has come up yet, but when it does.

Damage is actually 1 higher due to Street Fighting talent (1/2 Str rounded down added to crit damage). 8 hits - TB 6 = 2 - Toughness 4 = 1 crit.

Surely this is wrong somewhere? - The double dipping of critical damage reduction seems off.
