"First thing tomorrow. Let's share what we know first." Commander Xiang tells one of her men to bring the items from the armory as promised and requested. Before he comes back she invites you, the Tengu sergeants, Tai Dan, and Shiyo to join her and Scout Yuto near the map on one of her tables.
"This is the North Winds Watch fort.", she puts her finger on the map . It points to a small drawing of an encampment. Southwest of a long mountain range, presumably the Kimo Mountains. "Yuto, where exactly did you see this fire?"
Scout Yuto steps forward, and studies the map. "The blight is - or WAS, rather - a few hours to south.", he shows the point of the last sighting. "It might have spread, but last time I saw it was two days ago, and it was the first time, too. I am not sure whether it spreads, but it looks similar to fire. It doesn't produce smoke or heat, however, which means we can't track it from out watchtowers above the treetops. There is one other issue.", he adds as he further leans above the map. "Large animals hunt on the path directly towards the blight. But if we want to circle around, we could lose valuable time. We already lost enough."
Tai Dan, Shiyo and the tengu sergeants observe the map, and nod almost in unison. "I agree. We already lost enough time. The Twenty-Four Masks are not scared of a pack of animals. We'll take them down if need be. We'll be moving through to save time.", Tai Dan indicates a line that is a direct path between the fort and the area blighted area, then looks at you. "Pathfinders?"
Lin Kai |
"Yes, I agree. The longer we take, the greater risk for the encampment. Let's push on." Kai grabs a vial from his bandolier and gulps down the contents, granting himself additional health.

After agreeing on the next day's proceedings, the entirety of the tent heads off to their bunks. After making the necessary praparations for the day in the morning, a joint platoon of Pathfinders, Twenty-Four Masks, and Yuto's volunteers head south to investigate the blight. With the morning fog still lingering between the trees, the forest has an eerie feel about it. Dense treetops prevent most of the light from reaching you, and some of the men rely on torches to remain in formation, as it is already hard enough between the tree trunks and the fog.
Sergeant Toko's squad is split and scouting ahead in an extended formation. They still leave marks to follow for the rest of the troops. An hour into the march, brownish stains start appearing on the trees and on the ground, frequently accompanied by whitened bones. Soon after, fresh bones appear, with some tissue still on them. "Recent kills, be on your guard.", scout Yuto points out. "We're in tiger territory. But this is an unusual amount of prey, even for that one."
The platoon draws their weapons and make some distance from each other for ease of movement. A sudden realisation hits you - the only sound you hear are the twigs cracking under the feet of yourself and your allies. Was it like this twenty minutes ago? Looking around yourself, you realise that many of the troops feel the same way. They carefully observe the fog with eyes wide open, with their hands firmly gripping their weapons. The front row suddenly extends their spears forward.
"Movement!", someone shouts, as you hear someone running towards the platoon. Five tengu warriors wearing the armor of the Twenty-Four Masks emerge running towards the main force, and the aasimar spearmen point their polearms towards the sky to let them pass. Once the tengu scouts are in the main bulk, they point them towards the front again.
"Several tigers ahead, sergeant...", one of the scouts reports to Toko, still breathing heavily. She nods, and attempts to give out orders, but the scout stops her with a gesture. After he catches his breath, he continues: "One of them is... Strange. Twisted. Elongated claws and teeth, very large, I think I saw jagged rocks growing from it's shoulders...", before he is able to finish, a monstrous roar can be heard from the front. You move forward to investigate, and the spearmen let you past. As you move out of the formation, you notice a pack of tigers walking towards you, sniffing the ground the scouts ran over. Upon sighting you, one fo them roars again, showcasing its impressive teeth. Several rows of them, as a matter of fact. Bald patches in the creature's fur reveal scale-like rock pebbles on the skin beneath. The claws are indeed elongated, and bloody. But the again, so is the tiger's mouth and teeth. Jagged rocks, just as the scout reported, do inded grow from the creature's shoulders. And there's something in its eyes. Theya re extremely bulged out, as if being pushed out of the sockets by something else. Multiple other, younger, regularly-looking tigers move in tow of the roaring one, and they set their gazes upon you as they emerge from the fog.

"Yes, there's a large alpha male in the area. There are smaller animals but they mostly back away from feeding when they see him around."

The mutated creatures closes in from the front, not caring about cover. The nearest target in the opening, Shonne, takes a swipe. It also intends to grab her by the flesh and drag her towards the nasty-looking teeth, but doesn't manage to do so. Two smaller tigers close in from the sides, leaving space for the mutated specimen to do its thing. They attack Gorund Kahn and Narayan Singh, and attempt to use similar tactics as their corrupted alpha male. They both strike their targets but fail to draw them in closer.
Two remaining tigers continue closing in, but are a bit tangled in the forest undergrowth.
The creatures attacking sets the animals nearby into a bloodlust frenzy, and your aasimar and tengu companions are attacked by smaller wildlife. While defending from those, they can not help you with the tigers, it seems.

Victoria finishes off the last remaining animal with a barrage of arcane projectiles. Some of the tigers remain breathing on the ground, but most of them are out for good. With the mutated tiger's roars not present, the aasimar and tengu squads fight off the remainder of the attacking animals behind you.
It seems like you are not the first people to be attacked by the blighted creatures. Looking around the battlefield, you notice a corpse of a fallen soldier. The body is cleaned to the bone by predators and scavengers, and their armor is torn apart around the body.
he bones of a fallen soldier lie near the edge of the wood. While most of the soldier’s gear has fallen apart, there are two items near the hands. A dark, exceptionally well-looking blade, and a wand.
As black as coal, this short sword grows more potent the farther it is kept from light. It acts as a +1 short sword when in dim light. In darkness, it acts as +2 short sword. When surrounded by supernatural darkness, such as in an area of deeper darkness, it acts a +2 short sword and bestows the benefit of the Blind-Fight feat on its wielder. In daylight or bright illumination, the sword temporarily loses all its magical enhancement bonuses and acts as a masterwork weapon, though it resumes its magical functions once it is no longer in the bright light.

If anyone needs further healing, etc, you can do so on the way pre-encounter
Several hours pass by as you move through the forest. The occasional twisted flora seems to get more and more frequent until not much else remains, and the light of flames appears as you keep focused on the road ahead. Trees still obfuscate the fires, but it is clear that you are approaching a burning section of the woods.
A wall of pale orange flame marks the edge of the blight. The flames do not radiate heat, but instead drain the warmth from the surroundings. Thankfully, the flames themselves seem contained or, at least, to spread at only an imperceptibly slow rate. Plants caught within the flame do not seem charred or burnt, but instead appear twisted and warped, sporting unnatural growths that slowly bubble and boil at the low temperatures until they burst in spray of dark, viscous sap, filling the air with the stench of rotting vegetation.
Between the burning trees, you see several warriors walking among the fire, not caring about the effects of the blight. Not anymore at least. Their faces are scarred with mutations, but it doesn't seem to interfere with their ability to move or fight. They are cutting down burning branches and throwing them on healthy trees to help the blight spread.
"That's Lieutenant Riko,", Scout Yuto informs everyone around as he points towards a woman with white eyes and recently scarred face. "the former second-in-command at North Winds. And her honour guard."
Lin Kai |
Kai studies them very briefly. "I'm afraid they seem to have been corrupted by the same blight that has overtaken the forest." Immediately, he takes some precautions, downing a series of potions and extract, and activating some wands on himself.

"We need to stop them, but I am not certain how we can restore them," he sighs.

"This will certainly be a challenge, but the goddess will show the way for those who can be saved."
Kahn grants himself a few preparation spells also.
Protection from Evil, Expeditious Retreat, Resist Energy Cold.

But the question is which of them can be saved or are they so lost they must be destroyed with the blight?
Victoria asks as she prepares her buff spells.
Mirror Image imgs: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6, fly and prot v evil on herself. She can add haste and/or resist energy(cold) communal to the party once ready. Which I am assuming we have a few rounds before we will act based upon others preparations.
Anyone have a plan to address this mess? I am not sure how to put out the blight.

"If you have resistance magics, this would be the time to utilize them. Otherwise.."
Know Planes: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Not knowing much about the cold fire other than being told about it, he refocuses on the issue of the fallen soldiers.
"If I can engage them in combat I can knock them unconscious without threatening their lives."
A few ways I can do this. I can use Ectoplasmic points to deal non lethal damage as if my weapon were merciful, or punch them non-lethally.
Kahn can offer 3 more uses of Resist Energy and 4 uses of Protection from Evil. This will eat the rest of my 1st and 2nd level spells, however.
Shonne |
The blightfire could just be negative or unholy energy. Shonne attempts to figure out what it is from as far away as possible.
knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
If there is time to prepare she casts: gravity bow, and expeditious retreat on herself, and when the enemy is close enough, and assuming the majority of party is close enough as well, and no one else has cast it, she casts haste (CL 7).
Edit Seeing the map, we probably don't have a ton of time to be casting stuff. So depending on that, Shonne drops expeditious retreat since it just doubles her speed for a lot longer than haste. If someone else casts haste sooner or with greater effect she drops that as well, possibly subbing in shield if time allows. Lin should be finished buffing by the time the fight is over. ;) "Lin dear, what are you doing in there?" "Uh, don't come in ma! I'm, err, buffing!"
Narayan Singh |
Narayan waits patiently while the learned members of the party debate how to quell the blightfire.
Narayan should be able to have mage armor and barkskin reapplied well in advance. If we do have a moment to pre-buff he'll put up shield and heightened awareness as well

Any clue?
Shonne opens with haste (CL 7, hitting everyone in the party, if there are allied tengu within 30 ft. she tags one of them too). Then move action climbs one of the big stone outcroppings (move 60').
climb (accelerated .5 spd): 1d20 + 15 - 5 ⇒ (20) + 15 - 5 = 30

Shonne, since your kn planes has the same bonus as arcana - The blight is a strange cold, corrupting substance originating in the Abyss. It twists and mutates living matter into hideous forms. Assuming the transformation doesn't kill the creature, it will probably have to get used to the pain caused by the mutation. It acts like fire and spreads, but otherwise is freezing to the touch.
