Hi, all. This is a sample post to make sure that my account is working as needed. I am still working on finishing entering the info for my character. I'll post again when it's ready.

Amaya Harvey |

Good to see you are up and running Ian. Hopefully Jerry is almost done. I am itching to get started.
Good to be here! Please let me know if I have correctly summarized my stats into the post-heading fields. I'll be working on my text today or tomorrow and can make whatever additional changes to the numbers are needed. Thanks.

Hi. I've finally added Background and Appearance/Personality. I see now that I should have written my interaction with Pallaver as my Background, but I don't know enough about the Pallaver character. I've got a sketch of that episode started, anyway (from determining the Pallaver bonus skill), and will work it up into consumable prose in case it is needed.

I don't know if we were supposed to do that or not, I just saw that Mark did it.
The picture is in a different spot, i think -- "my account" under "messageboard aliases", when you "edit" you can just change the name and picture.
Then to change the rest of the stuff is in a different spot. But I guess you already found that spot.

Thanks for this info. Here is a test post to see if my avatar shows up. Also, let me know if my stats appear in my posts as needed.

What kind of posting frequency are we shooting for?
My thought is to aim for at least 3 posts a week, preferably spread out over the course of the week. I will update as gameplay flows, but I would like to make NPC/GM posts a minimum of 3 days a week to move the action along - say on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Ideally everyone would post in between mine with their (re)actions. If we're clipping along at a faster pace, however, I'm happy to post more often.

The Haunting at Helorus |

For gameplay posts, here's two of my play-by-post guidelines that I try to follow as a player:
A short post is better than no post. Not posting leaves everyone wondering if you've even read the new gameplay since your last post. Even something as simple as an inarticulate exclamation - "Uh-huh." or "Gyahh!" - lets everyone know that you're still with us, and that we're good to move on rather than waiting for you in case you wanted to do something.
If your character has nothing to do, they should have something to say. If your character has nothing to say, they should have something to think. If your character has nothing to do, say, or think, you may have to ask yourself if you actually want to be playing.

The Haunting at Helorus |

Now I'm just posting some FYI type information, since we have at least one player new to this whole play-by-post thing. So, a few words on formatting.
The preferred format is for speech to be bold and in quotation. "You look good." Volume of speech may sometimes be indicated by font size. For instance, if whispered: "You look good." If shouted: "You look good!" Italics may be used for emphasis - "You look good."
Thoughts should be in italics. He looks awful. Words in thought may be emphasized by removing italics: He looks really awful.
I may occasionally place text behind a spoiler, like so:
I may do this if something is noticed or experienced by a limited number of characters during play. The spoiler title will explain who the hidden information pertains to. Everyone is welcome to read the contents of spoilers, so long as you don't let it affect your decisions when it's information your character isn't aware of.

Amaya Harvey |

Thank you for the posting primer. I'll also start posting in the present tense---that makes more sense, obviously.
Amaya will not be volunteering as a pallbearer; certainly not initially, anyway. If Luther is going to do something show-stopping for which you need her prior response, let me know. Otherwise, I'll let you both post, then she'll respond to both of the men.

Amaya Harvey |

On a side note, there are no additional mourners in attendance at the funeral - there's just you three, the priest, the Russian, Mr. Keel, and the grieving woman. Just wanted to make sure that was clear.
Sorry. I didn't add that up.

The Haunting at Helorus |

In gameplay dice rolls, intended actions, and other such stuff can be be hidden behind a spoiler tag as Mark has done. Any questions you have can be posted here in the discussion thread, for instance if my description of events is poor/ambiguous and leaves you confused as to what's actually going on.

It's up to you Ian. You could try to use diplomacy to change their attitude, you could try to bluff them which is more of a short term solution, or you can sit back and watch the melee.

Amaya Harvey |

Ed, if all the NPCs have had their say, I'll try a Bluff. I have not amended my character sheet since we picked it as the Pallaver bonus---what is my Bluff? how should I enter it on the sheet? I'll probably make a Knowledge roll, too, as I concoct the story.
I'm not free to post until this afternoon (my time), but I'll get something up today or tonight.

Not to be presumptuous, your Bluff would be +12 with the Pallaver bonus.

Mark's correct, your total Bluff bonus is +12. Note that your Bluff isn't going to change their attitude, ie make them more friendly, it will just make them believe a lie. So it should be something that you think will inspire them to act the way you want them to.

For reference, what's your time zone?

No problem. I'll work on something appropriate.

I'm on Pacific time. As I post this, it is 2:08pm for me.

Not that I doubt your dice rolls Ian, but the is a built in dice roller. Format is dice=Perception 1d20 + 3; 1d6 + 2/dice
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Shoot. Does it work in Discussions, too?
Bluff: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (19) + 19 = 38
Yep.
And in an OOC?
Yep.
Sorry. Thanks for your patience while I learn the system.

FYI for anyone who hasn't read them yet, there's 2 good sets of guidelines I've found for PbP gaming: Doomed Hero's Guide to Play By Post Gaming and Painlord's Advanced Play-By-Post. I highly recommend giving them a look when you have the time.

Amaya Harvey |

I used the "suggest course of action" application of Bluff/Diplomacy for Amaya. In general, I'm willing to shorten the time needed to use social skills so long as combat isn't a foregone conclusion.
Thanks, Ed. I didn't mean to presume to know what rolls would be necessary. I simply wanted to know if any of the stuff was going to fail so that I could write in some sort of hook for the aftermath. I'll continue to include what rolls I think I need, just so that you have my info and intentions to work with; but I expect a GM to simply ignore the players as needed! Let me know if you want something different in the posts.
I don't mind at all you rolling for me, as needed. That is, I fully expect you to simply write "You all failed your Perception checks" along with the die rolls rather than toss it to us to post the same. If you want me proactively trying to Perceive things that aren't yet obvious in the plot, etc., just say so.
I'm reading the PbP HowTos now!

If you ever want to know what you can accomplish with the skills you have I recommend the online pathfinder srd. The skills are linked to their description and uses with sample DCs (difficulty checks, which are the target difficulty number).
