About Oukonunaka

Background:
As a child Oukonunaka's tribe was nearly wiped out by small pox. He too contracted the dreaded disesease and became ill slipping into a coma. Oukonunaka laid in a coma for seven days, and for seven days he had a vision.

Oukonunaka was awoken one morning all alone near a cave in a land he was not familiar with. From the cave came one of the small people. He explained that he must go on a long voyage and tasked Oukonunaka with guarding his cave until he returned. Oukonunaka, knowing better than to cross the small people, accepted and gave his word of honor he would guard the cave.

The 1st night it grew freezing cold, and Oukonunaka had no means of warming himself.

A voice from the woods called out, "Come to me, I have fire to warm you."

Oukonunaka could see a warm fire in a clearing ahead, but did not go to it. He would not break his word.

"I gave my word, I shall not leave," Oukonunaka spoke to the forest.

Erie laughter erupted, "You Will!" screamed the forest.

The second night the air grew hot, and Oukonunaka's skin burned, and each breath scorched his throat.

The voice from the woods called out once again, "Come to me, swim in my waters and cool yourself."

Oukonunaka could see a still pond in a clearing ahead, but did not go to it. His word is his bond.

"I am bonded to my task, I shall not leave," Oukonunaka spoke to the forest.

Laughter once again ensued, "We shall see!"

The third night a great storm raged, and Oukonunaka was scathed by the wind and rain, great thunder assualted his ears.

The voice from the woods called out, "Come to me, my cave will shelter you."

Oukonunaka could see a cave in a clearing ahead, but did not go to it. His word is his vow.

"I have vowed to guard this cave, I shall not leave," Oukonunaka spoke to the forest.

Laughter once again ensued, "You shall falter!"

The fourth night a great thirst beset Oukonunaka, his mouth dry like the desert and his muscles cramping.

The voice from the woods called out, "Come to me, my brook will quench your thirst."

Oukonunaka could see a babbling brook in a clearing ahead, but did not go to it. His word is his promise.

"I have promised to guard this cave, I shall not leave," Oukonunaka spoke to the forest.

The voice, devoid of laughter, whispered, meancacingly, "You shall break."

The fifth night Oukonunaka was beset by great hunger, his stomach rumbled and his legs grew weak.

The voice from the woods called out, "Come to me, my land will feed you."

Oukonunaka could see stalks of corn, and trees full of apples in the clearing ahead, but did not go to it. His word is his oath.

"I have pledged an oath to guard this cave, I shall not leave," Oukonunaka spoke to the forest.

The voice called out in spite, "You will falter!"

The sixth night Oukonunaka felt great despair in his heart and lonliness in his soul.

The voice from the woods called out, "Come to me, I will comfort you."

Oukonunaka could see lush clearing ahead, hope eminating from it, but did not go to it. His word is his pact.

"I have made a pact to guard this cave, I shall not leave," Oukonunaka spoke to the forest.

The voice screamed out, "YOU WILL FAIL!"

On the 7th night the forest called to Oukonunaka, "Leave your post or you SHALL DIE!"

Oukonunaka replied, "I have given my word, my word is a bond, my word is a vow, my word is a vow, my word is a prmise, my word is an oath, my word is a pact, my word is sacred, my word is me, and my word is my soul. I will guard this cave until I have no life left within me."

The forest closed in on Oukonunaka and ripped him and tore him. It beat him and broke his bones.

"Say you will leave this cave and I will spare you." cooed the forest, but Oukonunaka remained resolute.

"I will never break my word." gasped Oukonunaka through broken teeth, and crumbled bones.

As Oukonunaka made peace with his death, the pain stopped and the forest receded.

The small one came out from the forest accompanied by a giant white owl.

"You have done well," spoke the small one. "This is Gayatohásdi, he is my gift to you, a spirit to guard you."

As Gayatohásdi flew towards Oukonunaka he became a bright white light which blinded Oukonunaka. Slowly Oukonunaka's vision cleared and he saw a strange white man's face.

"We thought we had lost you," the man spoke in perfect Iroquoian.
"I am Dr. Pallaver and you are going to be okay."

Appearance and Personality:
His skin tanned from head to toe a deep bronze by the harsh sun, Oukonunaka proudly stands before you. Corded muscles adorn his lean frame. His head carved from stone by the elements, weathered and sharp, is clean shaven save for the braided top knot of stark white hair that ends midway down his muscular back. Piercing grey eyes examine you from angular white eyebrows giving him the appearance of man older than his 16 years.

While traveling Oukonunaka wears leather armor, buckskin loincloth, and buckskin leggings. He carries a tribal shield, bow, quiver, spear, with a tomahawk and knife on his belt. He rides a white Cherokee horse.

Oukonunaka is reserved and laconic. He is much more comfortable out in the wilderness than with "civilized" folk.
