Urza begins by casting his shield spell. Lorenz moves forward past Mahjik and Urza, pulling out his rapier along the way.

The vegepgymy stabs at Mahjik with its spear.

The spear comes close, but not close enough to cause any harm. Mahjik waits for a moment.

From just around the corner, a second Vegepgymy steps into sight right beside Lorenz (it took a 5-ft step). Clearly unprepared for someone to be right in front of it, it tries to stab past Lorenz at Mahjik.

Vegepygmy 2 longspear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

But Lorenz blocks the way.

ROUND 1

Mahjik senses the time is right and springs into action. He bounds forward and attacks the first of the vegepgymies. His initial attack slams into the pygmy's chest.

Vegepygmy 1 Fortitude: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

The pygmy reels from the blow, but is not stunned. Mahjik follows up, however, with a second blow that sends the pygmy plummeting to the ground.

Now that he's further into the room, Mahjik notices the source of the moaning: a bloated tower of foul purple fungus along the southern wall of the cave. It twitches and writhes.

Douena sees the sudden movements of the men ahead of her and hears the grunts of battle. "Makoa!" she calls back to him on the shore. "Hurry! Sounds like they found trouble!" She continues up the bridge toward the cave. Move to -B82; if she can't take 10 anymore, Acrobatics 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

"Of course they did." Makoa says as he starts to move across the bridge..

Okay, either I couldn't get across the bridge or I just fell...

Lorenz does his best to ignore the bloated tower of purple fungus as he thrusts his rapier toward the pygmy that had attacked Mahjik.

Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Assuming, of course, that Urza doesn't somehow kill it.

After striking the mold-man Lorenz quickly shifts his shield around and readies it, anticipating more spears arriving at any moment.

Douena moves as quickly as she can up the bridge.

Okay, either I couldn't get across the bridge or I just fell...

Don't worry, you didn't fail by enough to fall. You just don't make any progress this round. Besides, even if you had fallen, since you're already at the bottom, there's not much that could happen to you. :)

A glob of acid shoots out from Urza, over the mushroom and between Lorenz and Mahjik... and then right over the vegepygmy's head. (Since you're firing into melee, there's a -4 penalty to the roll, so he only got a touch AC 11.)

Just as the acid blob shoots past, Lorenz stabs the vegepygmy with his rapier. The blade goes right into the neck and slides back out. The vegepygmy seems entirely unperturbed.

It then takes a step back (5-ft step to -C94) and tries again to stab Mahjik.

Vegepygmy 2 longspear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

It stumbles slightly as it moves back, however, and ends up stabbing the big mushroom instead.

Back on shore, Makoa tries to start up the fungus bridge, but gets his foot caught in some of the early strands. It takes him a moment to get it free.

We haven't actually heard from Aakif since before the new year. Hopefully he's still around and following along. I'll give him a bit of time to respond. I really should be in bed now anyway. :)

I'm at a work function (the not fun type) for the next 6 hours or so. I'll post then if the Violet Fungus has acted already (don't know what to expect from it, so don't want to preempt my actions)

Presumably, Aakif will just attempt to move up the bridge, so I'll just go with that.

Aakif begins moving along the bridge, ascending a short distance (to -B73).

The purple fungus on the south wall wrenches itself from the wall and the ground with a loud squelch. It slithers across the ground (to A95), long tentacles whipping about it.

ROUND 2

Seeing the second funguy reveal himself, Mahjik spins and shifts his position 5ft to -D93 bringing his knee up for a speedy series of kicks.

Urza casts another acid splash at the vegepygmy. He moves forward if the space allows.

Mahjik steps forward and attacks. His first blow goes wide, but the second connects with the side of the vegepygmy's face, knocking its head to its side.

To keep things moving, I'll presume that those climbing up the bridge will continue doing so until they reach the top.

Douena Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Douena continues scurrying up the bridge, getting close to the top (at -B88).

The vegepygmy has barely recovered from Mahjik's attack when a glob of acid from Urza slams into its face. The pygmy reels and collapses.

He continues to do his best to ignore the large fungus thing with the whirling tentacles, though he could still feel the nausea in his stomach churning at the sight.

Errr, there's actually nothing else for him to attack apart from the big purple fungus, which he can't actually see yet since there's a wall between him and it. Urza took down the last of the two vegepygmies.

Oops. Evidently I was rendered temporarily blind last night when I read the last update. My apologies!

Seeing how ineffective his rapier had been, Lorenz returns it to his scabbard and draws his flail.

"Are there more of them, Mahjik?" He asks softly, not especially eager to step out into the open.

Makoa tries again to get across the bridge.

Acrobatics to move to -B 81:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

Take that bridge! :p

"No. But you'll find a big purple growth here - I think it might be the heart of it all. I could reach it with just one little step."

As Lorenz hesitates to move forward, Makoa gets himself unstuck and scurries up the bridge. I forgot that when you beat the DC by 5, you can move at full speed with Acrobatics or half speed with Climb, so Aakif and Douena should have made it farther than they did. I've moved Douena up behind Lorenz now, and Aakif to -B76.

Aakif continues to move along the bridge (reaching -B82).

The big purple fungus continues slithering a short distance (5-ft step to -B95) and lashes out with its long tentacles. Four of them swipe at Mahjik.

As the rotting sears his body a periled "AAORRRGH! BLASTED! Little one! Please ask Desna to show me the way to Irori if I cannot make it to him myself!" Hoping to give his comrades the time and advantage they need, he steps forward. Eyes blazing with intent he strikes. "Wise men said there'd be days like this!"

Mahjik adds, coughing some blood - "The thing has long tentacles, careful when you approach it!"

Actually, they look the same from my perspective. There were two hits and two misses. Each hit did damage (3 and 2) and inflicted a Fortitude save. Both saves failed and so he took additional Str and Con damage from each hit (3 and 3 Str, and 3 and 1 Con). I wasn't exactly clear on what was a hit/miss or pass/fail, however. He's still alive though! That's the main thing. :)

In his weakened state, Mahjik steps over the fallen vegepygmy and lashes out at the horrid fungus. One of his blows lands, but it is a weak one. He does 1 point of nonlethal (there's nothing in the plant traits stating they're immune to nonlethal).

Douena doesn't have a clear view of the tentacle-thing, but she has prime seats to witness Mahjik take his horrific wounds. "Makoa!" she calls over her shoulder. "We need you to bite something!" She squeezes past Lorenz and the fungus stalks to -D93 to reach out and touch Mahjik from behind using him as cover, hopefully. "You don't want to go see Irori today," she insists. "He's very busy today and doesn't have a free moment." converting endure elements to cure light wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Urza moves to B94 to help Majhik

Douena's actions cause the gaping wounds on Mahjik to close over, but he still looks terribly weakened by the attack.

Urza moves up to assist Mahjik, but as he does so, the fungus lashes out with one of its tentacles.

The tentacle comes close, but slams into the shield. Urza's claw slices into the side of the mushroom-like creature, but causing only minor damage.

Holding his shield high, Lorenz steps forward and around the cave wall. He pales as he sees the large mound of purple fungus but he steels his nerves and moves forward to attack.

Stepping into place beside Urza (and hopefully fending off a tentacle with his shield) Lorenz swings his flail at the fungus, groaning with disgust as he does so.

Move to -C93, down to -B93, across to -A94.

Lorenz involuntarily squeezes his eyes shut as he swings, missing the fungus completely.

Luckily, it does not have Combat Reflexes and cannot make another AoO this round. :)

Makoa continues up the bridge, but unfortunately does not manage to go as quickly as previously. He gets close to the top (-B87).

Mahjik fights on valiantly, managing to inflict some small damage on the mushroom. As Douena moves away towards Lorenz, one of the creature's tentacles tries to swipe at her as well.

However, Douena is able to easily avoid it, hiding behind the legs of the bigger members of the party. Lorenz feels the luck of Desna come over him.

Urza was momentarily shocked that the plant's attack was able to make it past his magical defenses. He recovered, though, and launched himself at his foliagant foe.

Whoops! You're right.

A slightly harder smack, but you still passed the Fortitude save, which is where the real damage comes from.

Urza's claws rip into the purple mushroom, tearing out shreds of fungus. Lorenz follows up with a blow to the top of the creature, leaving a huge dent behind.

Moving to -C 91. If that mushroom thing on the map is in the way, I'll just move to -B 91

-C91 is mostly solid rock wall. There's only a sliver of the corner that's floor. However, I suspect you actually meant -C92 (which is where the mushroom is), so I've put you there (the mushroom's a flimsy thing which can be easily bent aside).

Makoa makes it up the bridge and into the cave.

Aakif pulls himself up the last bit of the bridge and enters the cave right behind Makoa (at -B91).

The violet fungus, looking heavily battered lashes out once more, one tentacle at each of the four people in its reach.

Its battered state is obviously working against it however, as almost all the tentacles go wide of their mark. The one coming at Mahjik gets close to him, but he easily ducks beneath it.

"It's time to bring an end to this. I can't go on like this much longer." A flurry of strikes smash against the creature - but only a smidgen of damage breaks through the tough cell fibre.

"Urza, Desna guide your claws. Finish it before it can tentacle anyone again!" Bit of Luck on Urza Douena draws her staff defensively, hoping she doesn't need it. Move action: draw weapon

Bit of Luck is going to provoke AoO again, but that will draw off its only one for the round, leaving everyone else free to manuever.

Urza steps to the side (A95) to work on flanking the fungus.

Mahjik's attack causes, as said, only a smidgen of damage to the fungus. Douena then grants Urza a bit of luck, but as she does so, the fungus lashes out with a tentacle.

The tentacle slips past Urza and slaps Douena on the hand that she's trying to touch Urza with. When she touches Urza, the hand is covered in blood with bits of knuckle bone showing through. The blood does not impede the luck rushing through Urza however. Urza's first attack is a hit, but not the second. However, he gets a reroll for both attacks. I'll reroll both of them since there is the possibility that the first could be improved by a critical threat.

Urza Claw 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Alas, no change to the results.

Urza moves part-way around the fungus and lashes out. One of his claws rips away more of the outer layer of the fungus.

Douena cries out, and her eyes fill with tears as she sees the white of her bone through the blood. "I don't like this fungus island!" she complains.

Doh! Sorry about that. I completely forgot. Yes, she does know information about it. Alas, most of that info is now pretty apparent from its actions. At any rate, it is a violet fungus, a form of carnivorous fungus. Its tentacles are coated with a venom that causes flesh to rot and decay. Although a violet fungus is mobile, it only moves to acquire food. If it has a supply of flesh to feed on, it will stay in one place.

Makoa's roar fills the cave as he watches the flesh of his friends melt away at the touch of what appears to be an overgrown mushroom. He runs at the fungus and tries to push it away from his friends.

Moving to -B 94 and Initiating a Ragin Bull Rush

Seeing Douena struck by the nasty fungus' tentacle, Lorenz gathers himself and strikes out with the flail once again.

"Die, you nasty thing!" He shouts.

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Lorenz's flail smashes into the side of the purple mushroom, causing it to bend and snap. As Makoa rushes in to attempt his bullrush, the mushroom deflates and falls over. (No need to count a round of rage used.) The tentacles twitch for a few moments, but then go still.

As you catch your breaths, you notice a hint of bone protruding from the fungal "flesh". Suddenly, the fungus begins to dissolve, revealing a human skeleton beneath it. The other mushrooms and fungus in the cave begin to noticeably wilt as well. Fungus stuck to the walls and ceiling begins to fall off. Even the bodies of the vegepygmies seem to be rotting away.

COMBAT OVER

"Wise man would not celebrate too early - but I'm game for a bit now. ooooph... my body feels like it has aged 50 years in just a few seconds."

Mahjik looks at the great wilting. "Looks like the old captain became the lifeblood for all the fungus. Let's hope it really is over then."

Lorenz sags a little as the awful mushroom began to dissolve. Disgusted as he was by the skeleton beneath the fungus, he was a little dazed by the reaction in the cave all around them.

"Did I actually kill the thing? Could this be all it takes?"

He moves toward the opening of the cave to look out at the landscape of the island (and their 'bridge').

Perception Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

The adrenaline of the battle over, Douena's weak knees give way beneath her and she plops down on the floor of the cave and leans against the wall. "Can we get back to the island, Lorenz? I'm not very good at swimming."

The fungus bridge is still in place, although a close look at the edges and extremities reveals that it is starting to wilt as well. You probably only have a couple of minutes to get back down it. The rest of the fungus island looks unaffected so far.

"Uh, we better hurry. It looks like it's dying as fast as everything else."

Not wanting to get trapped, Lorenz removes his shield, places his flail back on his belt and begins to climb across.

Climb Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

"Wait!" Douena calls after him. "Are we sure we're done? We didn't find a pod thingy. And captains usually have shiny things," she adds to herself. With an effort, she gets up and begins to quickly search the cave. Perception 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Feel free to add +5 to the DC for her being distracted by the rotting bridge. :)

Lorenz pauses at Douena's call and looks around for a good place to anchor a rope.

If he finds one, he removes his rope from his pack, secures one end to it and then starts moving across as orginally planned.

"I'm setting up a rope so that we can climb across after the bridge dies!"

If he doesn't find one, he hands the other end to Aakif and moves across the bridge to tie it to Soulwind's saddle horn. He might have abandoned us, but we might as well make use of him!

"If you don't mind - I'll return to the island. I... need a break." Mahjik looks at Douena scurrying about. "Kids..." he mutters to himself as he descends along the bridge.
