Makoa Wolf'sKin |
"Does it bother you now?" Douena wonders aloud. "To be raised by wolves and elves and be something else entirely?"
"It never bothered me. It's who I am." He smiles for a moment. "The wolves were nicer than some people I've met."
Does anyone else think the map's squares look funny? I'll follow behind Douena.

Mahjik hurries round the giant crab while Douena begins round the other side. Both see that Pezock has been grabbed by a massive snake that is now wrapping itself around him.
Next Up: Remainder of Douena's turn, Aakif, Makoa, Pezock, Gelik, Snake, Ishirou, Urza, Lorenz, Sasha, Aerys, Jask, Mahjik.

Until we hear from him, I'm going to go ahead and control Aakif again.
Aakif hears Pezock's cry and mounts Soulwind.
Aakif fast mount: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 -- fail; mounting is a move action
He then guides the horse towards the sound of the cry.
I'll follow behind Douena.
As Douena did not move any farther, Makoa has only used one move action to stay behind her. He can continue on farther or do another action if you'd like.

Douena Trestleben wrote:"Does it bother you now?" Douena wonders aloud. "To be raised by wolves and elves and be something else entirely?""It never bothered me. It's who I am." He smiles for a moment. "The wolves were nicer than some people I've met."
"But not nicer than any of us," Douena prompts him, smiling. "Well, except maybe Aerys or Gelik. But they're getting better."

As Douena draws her weapon, Makoa continues on past her up beside Pezock. The tengu struggles against the snake and tries to slip free of its grip.
Pezock Escape Artist: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 -- fail
Alas, it has too tight a grip on him and he is not able to wiggle free.
Gelik rushes round the south side of the crab (double move to CS -160) and gulps when he sees the giant snake.
The snake, meanwhile continues to constrict around Pezock.
Snake grapple check: 1d20 + 13 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 13 + 5 = 36
Constrict damage: 1d4 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
It successfully pins him. Pezock's mouth opens in a silent scream as he tries desperately to gasp for air. He does not look in good shape.
Ishirou rushes to Pezock's location (double move to CO -160), drawing his katana as he goes.
Next Up: Urza, Lorenz, Sasha, Aerys, Jask, Mahjik, Douena, Aakif, Makoa, Pezock, Gelik, Snake, Ishirou.

Urza scurries around the crab and gets himself into position for his spell (at CL -160). Lorenz and Sasha follow right after him, Sasha out-striding Lorenz slightly (reaching CP -159).
Aerys, who was farthest off hurries as quickly as she can (reaching CK -164). Finally, Jask, looking ill and weak, pulls himself out of his bed.
Next Up: Mahjik, Douena, Aakif, Makoa, Pezock, Gelik, Snake, Ishirou, Urza, Lorenz, Sasha, Aerys, Jask.
Map Updated
Mahjik the Flink |
The adrenalin still carries Mahjik forward, his steps light enough to slide passed Gelik, Sasha and Ishirou reaching just far enough to deliver a forceful punch to a nerve center. Move to wherever he can deliver a stunning fist attack
Stunning Fist Attack 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 damage 1d6 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
Looks like it might be a hit - in that case it is a DC 14 Fortitude save vs being stunned

ROUND 2
Mahjik moves up and delivers a quick blow around the claw of the giant crab. (The only remaining spot for him to get an attack in from (apart from climbing on top of the crab) is CP -160. The snake has cover there from the crab claw. However, Mahjik still hits.)
Snake Fortitude: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
He damages it, but does not stun it. It hisses angrily.
Next Up: Douena, Aakif, Makoa, Pezock, Gelik, Snake, Ishirou, Urza, Lorenz, Sasha, Aerys, Jask, Mahjik.
Map Updated
Douena Trestleben |
Sorry, Mahjik, but it's only 3 points of damage, and Pezock's taken a lot. Just in case Aakif and Makoa can't kill it...
Douena continues around the crab and takes up a position behind Lorenz. Move to CM-158 "Keep breathing, Pezock," she shouts to him, presenting her wooden butterfly. "You're going to be okay!" Channel Positive Energy 1d6 ⇒ 3
Navior |
Douena moves into position and the song of Desna channels out, healing Pezock (and anyone else still injured from yesterday, like Urza or Lorenz) of only a small portion of his wounds, and also unfortunately healing the snake.
Aakif Ride check guide mount with knees: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 -- success
Aakif and Soulwind come tearing round the south side of the giant crab. Unable to get close enough for melee, Aakif takes his bow and fires an arrow at the snake.
Aakif shortbow (adjusted for firing from horseback and into melee): 1d20 + 4 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 - 4 - 4 = 2 -- miss
The arrow hits the crab instead and bounces away.
Makoa, however, bites into the snake's body near where it has hold of Pezock, piercing it deeply. Pezock takes that moment to try to wriggle free again.
Pezock Escape Artist: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 -- fail
Gelik moves over a little (to CS -158) and begins loudly telling jokes which inspire you all (inspire courage effect giving a +1 competence bonus to everyone's attack and damage rolls; 1 round of bardic performance used).
Snake grapple: 1d20 + 13 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 13 + 5 = 26 -- success
Constriction damage: 1d4 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Despite the attacks on it, the snake continues to constrict around Pezock, who gives one final gasp before losing consciousness.
Ishirou katana: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 5 + 1 = 13 -- hit
Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 = 9
Ishirou swings his katana, and cuts into the length of the snake giving it another nasty wound.
Next Up: Urza, Lorenz, Sasha, Aerys, Jask, Mahjik, Douena, Aakif, Makoa, Pezock, Gelik, Snake.

Lorenz Aeryson |
I'm not sure if Lorenz is in reach or not. Pezock is within five feet of him, so I'd assume so, but if not...well, I'll provide actions for both scenarios.
Lorenz thrusts with his rapier, hoping he doesn't accidently hit Pezock.
If Lorenz can't reach the snake...
Lorenz drops his rapier, pulls his bow and fires an arrow, hoping he doesn't accidentally hit Pezock.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Rapier Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Bow Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

It's a touch confusing since grapples no longer have the participants occupying the same space. The snake is in squares CN -162, CN -161, CO -162, and CO -161, which puts it currently out of reach of Lorenz, even though it's supposedly constricting around Pezock who is in CN -160, which is directly adjacent to Lorenz. However, Pezock is currently unconscious, and since you can occupy the square of an unconscious character, Lorenz can take a 5-ft step and attack.
For a fluff visual description of how this is working, I'd say that the snake has Pezock pulled up to the left edge of CN -160, right along the border of CN -161 really. Lorenz is just a bit far back to get a good strike, so shifts up a little bit closer into the right side of CN -160.
Also, you forgot to include your +1 bonuses from Gelik's inspire courage. :)
Lorenz valiantly steps up beside Pezock and the snake and stabs, the blade piercing the snakes flesh and almost going right through. The snake, clearly angered, is in bad shape.
Sasha, unable to get in to reach, stands impatiently twitching, and waits (ready action to 5-ft step and attack as soon as there's an opening).
Aerys moves up (to Cl -160) with her longbow ready and fires a shot.
Aerys longbow: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 - 4 = 15 -- hit
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The arrow strikes the snake in the head. Its entire body spasms, then goes limp. Pezock slips free and drops to the ground.
COMBAT OVER
Mahjik the Flink |
In spite of the re-surging numbness in his body, Mahjik's first thought is to pull Pezock further away from the crab house. He plants his ears to the birdman's chest seeking for signs of life.
Heal check 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
"Douena! Hurry! I can't tell if he's breathing or not! PEZOCK! WAKE UP!!"
Douena Trestleben |
"Saving your life," she smiles down into his beaky face. "I told you I was good luck. Now we have snake to eat! We haven't had any snakemeat since we were first on the island."
If we move him back into camp and away from the dead/dying snake, she'll channel. If there's anyone else left injured, get in the radius. I didn't realize there were still people left hurt from yesterday. Channel Positive Energy 1d6 ⇒ 5
EDIT: Makoa, did you delete a post, or is it not showing up like Mahjik's the other day? I saw it when I Previewed but then it was gone when I Submitted.
Navior |
"I suppose saving my life is acceptable," Pezock says. You help him to his feet and then move far enough away from the snake to be able to channel.
Jask comes over and adds a channel of his own.
Channel positive energy: 1d6 ⇒ 2
That should be enough to heal up anyone still injured from yesterday, but Pezock is still hurt. Jask will cast a cure light wounds on him as well.
Cure light: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Jask is looking very weak and tired afterwards, and he sits down in the sand.
Urza Sha'rahad |
Urza aids in preparing the snake. He isn't as proficient at it as Makoa and his hands a touch shaky, but he does what he can. "That first one went down a lot easier than this one." He jokes.
Mahjik the Flink |
"Wise man would harken the gilblossom bird, as they strive to sing against the noisiest tide. What I'm trying to say is that I'm unsure. I'm worried I've picked up what Jask is suffering from - but right now I feel better than yesterday. Should we push on today and see if we can epxlore a bit more? Or should we rest first? ...we still have Ishirou's treasure map to look at."

"You look worse," Douena says, examining him critically. "And Urza's getting spotty, too." She shakes her head. "I don't know. The longer we sit here, the more likely the cannibals are to come and find us. On the other hand, we don't want to have to fight them when everyone's all sick and weak. On the other hand, if we keep sitting here, maybe the spots will keep spreading and we'll all get them." She looks around blinking. "I think I have too many hands."
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
"Pezock, if we are going after the cannibals soon, our comrades may not be up to it. If you could teach someone who isn't too sick how to operate the crab while we are gone, and allow them to stay in it, then we could focus our full attention on the fighting instead of worrying about our friends."
Douena Trestleben |
"Oh, I wish I could operate the crab," Douena says wistfully. "I'm not sick, though. I bet Gelik could do it. Us gnomes are good at mechanical things. Should we go try to find the tree lady today? Hopefully that wouldn't be too dangerous -- not like attacking the cannibal village, anyway. We could bring her back here if she'll help us, and then maybe everyone would be feeling better by the time we go after the cannibals."
Pezock aka Navior |

Pezock's beak quivers slightly. You think it might be the tengu equivalent of a scowl. "Well, I don't know..." he says. "This crab is pretty valuable to me and I'd hate for anyone to break it. Still, if you're careful, I suppose it would be all right. But only one! No more! Who's it to be?"
Douena Trestleben |
Mahjik chuckles a little at Douena's wistful glance at the crab, "I would recommend Ishirou's treasure. The tree lady is, by all accounts, deeper in cannibal territory - and we should try not to provoke a confrontation prematurely."
"Didn't we say we were going to have to camp there overnight to find the treasure, though? Should we be gone that long with cannibals about to boil out of the jungle at any moment?"
Lorenz Aeryson |
Lorenz clears his throat before stepping in to the conversation. "I think the cannibals are of greater importance than the treasure. As I've said before, treasure isn't going to be of any use to us here on this island. If the cannibals know we're here, they'll be looking for us and if we camp on the hill where the treasure is supposed to be, they'll be able to find us all the more quickly."
He glances in Jask's direction as the cleric walks away and to Mahjik as well. "I think it'd be better to get us all up to our full strength, protect our camp until that occurs and then deal with the cannibals."
Douena Trestleben |
"But that's so boring, Lorenz!" Douena flops down in the sand. "Just sitting here listening to Gelik talk all day? Isn't there something else we can do?"
Are there any quests we're forgetting? We've done the fungus (afaik); we still have the woman-who-lives-in-a-tree, Ishirou's treasure, the cannibals, and finding Ieana. Anything else? Have we done all the NPC quests other than Ishirou's?

Ishirou's is the only NPC quest you haven't completed yet. As far as other quests, you've pretty much listed them all, except maybe the Red Mountain Devil, if you consider that a quest.
"We're closer to the west coast here, so it might be easier for you to go down that way," Aerys suggests. "It would also be a chance to see if there are any other ways to approach the cannibal village. However, maybe you should wait a day so that Urza and Mahjik can recover a little. I know we can't sit around too long, but they really don't look very good at the moment."
Aerys looks about to say more when there's suddenly a yell from across the camp.
To be continued in the next post... :)
Sasha Nevah aka Navior |
The yell comes from Sasha. For a brief moment, you find yourselves reaching for weapons, fearing the worst, but she then says, "It's happening! It's hatching!"
Rushing over to her, you see that she has the flappybite egg and nest laid out on the sand. There are cracks appearing on the shell and a little hole is forming, through which you can just make out the tip of a beak. "Stay back! Stay back!" Sasha urges, ushering people back and out of the way. "It has to see me first!"
Slowly, bits of the shell begin to fall away and more of the flappybite pushes itself out. Finally, it tumbles out of the egg and into the nest. A moment later, its head peers up and a high pitched squeak emits from its beak. Sasha bends down over it, filling up its full vision. She has a pouch in her hand and from it, she pulls out slimy, pulverized fish guts, which she proceeds to drop into the tiny dimorphodon's waiting mouth.
Sasha Nevah aka Navior |
"Well," Sasha responds as she grabs some more fish guts, "I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and the answer is, I'm going to treat it much like a bird. I'll give it a bit of time for its muscles to develop and then I'll behave like a mother bird. I'll start by feeding it from a few feet away, forcing it to have to move to get the food. Once it's figured that out, I'll put it on elevated surfaces, like a branch and get it to go from one branch to another. The flying will come gradually from that."
She pauses and feeds more fish guts to the flappybite. "Of course," she says with a frown, "this is all requiring that dimorphodons are like birds, which I don't actually know for sure, but I'm sure I'll figure out what to do if they aren't."
Makoa Wolf'sKin |
"It may sound cruel but, when you think it is strong enough, you could always throw it up into the air. If it doesn't fly, just catch it and try again. Once it gets the idea that flapping it's wings can get it up off the ground, you can have it hunting with you in no time."
"Or at least catching those stupid fish..." He grumbles.
Douena Trestleben |
Douena's boredom is forgotten at Sasha's cry. The gnome bounces all around the egg and surrogate mother, trying to get the best vantage point for the hatching. "Is it a boy or a girl, Sasha? What are you going to name it? Can you teach me to fly like that too, Sasha? If I jump from branch to branch, do you think I could learn now? Makoa, Makoa, will you throw me up in the air? You never made your swing you promised me; it's only fair."
