At the sight of Tar'kanas readying his bow and the sound of Pezock yelling, several figures rise out of the grasses south of the party. They don't rise very far as they are all quite short. They have a gnome-like appearance to them, but with red skin and their faces have been painted to look like leering skulls. They wear leather armour and are armed with halberds.

Knowledge (local) DC 13:
The gnome-like creatures are spriggans, related to gnomes, but capable of growing to immense size.

M Elf Ranger 6

As Tar'kanas turns to face the gnome-like creatures, he looks over at Pezock curiously. "Hm," he manages as he finds his method of drawing one out odd, yet simple and quite effective.

Female Gnome Cleric 4/ Rogue (burglar) 3

"Pezock! Stop!" Douena scolds, excited to see someone her own size. "They're gnomes; they might be friendly! Hello! I'm Douena!" she greets the newcomers with an exuberant wave, first in Polyglot, then in Gnome, hoping they find her as fascinating as she does them.

Jask Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 9 - 2 = 19

"They're not gnomes, Dounea," Jask calls. "They're spriggans."

As she says it, the "gnomes" suddenly start to grow, their weapons, armour, and clothing growing with them. In a matter of moments, they are all as big as ogres.

#2 holds its ground in front of the approaching Pezock. The others spread out and begin moving towards the party. #1 to O-P 149-159. #3 to P-Q 152-153. #4 to R-S 161-162. #5 to S-T 164-165. #6 to Q-R 165-166.

Their intentions seem quite hostile, although they haven't actually attacked yet (mainly because their standard action this round was to change size, so they haven't had a chance to attack yet).

"They related to gnomes," Jask replies to Douena. "They lost all their joy in the world and were corrupted into what you see."

Sasha draws her weapons and moves over in front of Jask. Move to H 155. Total defence.

They're not monstrous humanoids. The sad part is, the extra +4 would have made a difference between a miss and a hit. :(

Tar'kanas's arrow whizzes through the air only to land in the grass near the spriggan's feet.

Ishirou draws his katana and moves out to the side a bit to await the spriggans' approach (move to H 148).

He has obviously not learned the ways of the Castaways: Never try to kill something until you're sure you can't make friends with it or keep it as a pet first. ;P

Which gives ally within 50ft(which should be everyone) and a Makoa a +1 moral bonus on attack rolls and saves versus fear effects for the next 3 minutes(30 rounds).

M Elf Ranger 6

Tar'kanas looks confused to Douena's outcry as Makoa responds to her. "Makoa is right; they are not here to befriend us," he states simply.

As Tar'kanas calls out commands to Untari, she moves over near to him, preparing to attack.

As Makoa's spell settles over everyone, Sasha calls out to Alton, telling him to stay for now. Alton simply circles around in the air.

At Tar'kanas's command, Untari moves up between him and the spriggans.

"They're right, Douena," Lorenz says. "We can't just stand here and do nothing while they try to kill us." He takes out his bow and fires off an arrow.

Lorenz longbow at #4, Deadly Aim, bless: 1d20 + 10 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 10 - 2 + 1 = 10 -- miss

Unfortunately, he misjudges the wind and the arrow lands in the grass too far to the side. "Blast," he mutters.

Shokambe takes out his mace, but holds back for now.

Jask reaches out and touches Sasha's shoulder, casting a spell as she does so (shield of faith). She then moves back by Douena and Shokambe (to D 155).

"Thank you, Urza," Douena sniffs. "Lorenz thinks everything that doesn't look like him is trying to kill him."

I take it Urza just re-readies to cast his spell if they attack? I'll presume that's the case.

"That's not--" Lorenz starts to angrily retort, but then the spriggans charge forward (#1 to J-K 18-149, #2 to J-K 156-157, #3 to J-K 152-153, #4 to J-K 159-160, #6 to I-J 161-162; #5 doesn't charge, just double moves to G-H 164-165) and attack. Urza quickly casts his mage armour spell as the spriggans raise their halberds.

Spriggan #1 halberd at Ishirou, charge: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 = 19 -- hit

Spriggan #3 halberd at Mahjik, charge: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 2 = 21 -- miss

Damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (1, 2) + 7 = 10

While Mahjik just manages to avoid being hurt (the halberd can't penetrate his barkskin toughened skin), the other attacks manage a devastating effect. The blow to Ishirou is almost enough to take him down. Nonetheless, he remains standing, albeit bloodied considerably. Pezock takes two blows and his looking pretty bad after them. Makoa also takes a heavy blow.

Both of Mahjik's blows land solidly, but #3 is able to resist the stunning strike. Nonetheless, the physical damage is still quite substantial, leaving the spriggan looking quite injured.

Sasha closes in as well (5-ft step to I 154) and proceeds to strike.

Despite its charge having opened it up to easier attack, the spriggan still manages to avoid Sasha's rapier, but as it does so, it puts itself right into position for an attack from her kukri, which lands solidly.

"No, you can face one with help," Douena replies firmly. She looks around at her injured allies and at the spriggans, to whom she is far too close. "Jask!" she shouts over her shoulder. "Channel! Shokambe, get back to Jask! Lorenz, you're the only one here with a magic sword; get ready to use it! I need to get to the other side, Desna!" She calls upon the goddess of luck and then dances between the legs of the oversized gnome to the south of her, emerging utterly unscathed with her starknife in her hand.

Swift action: cast grace; Move: to L 158, drawing weapon; Standard: Ready action to attack spriggan #4 when she has flanking

Readied attack:
1d20 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 16 damage 1d3 - 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) - 1 + (5) = 5

That ought to provide flanking for Mahjik or Sasha or Makoa on #2 if one of them moves to I 155, for Pezock on #4 with a 5-foot-step to I 159, and for Lorenz on #4 if he drops his bow and draws his sword to move to I 158. Alternatively, he could avoid the AoO by getting one more shot off, dropping his bow, and then drawing his sword to fight #5 and cover Pezock and Shokambe that way, but NPC or not, we've got to get the cannibal chieftan's scimitar in the fight.

Douena doesn't quite have enough movement to reach L 158, so I've put her at L 159 for now, which is 30 ft going around #4. It doesn't enable all the flanking opportunities you were hoping for, but Pezock could still get in there to flank with her. If you'd rather move her a different direction, let me know.

As for Lorenz, as nice as the magical scimitar is, he still is better off with his bow. If he uses none of his feats (like Deadly Aim and Rapid Shot), he has a higher bonus to hit (+10 versus +9 with the scimitar) and does the same damage (1d8+4). If he uses his feats, he can get off more attacks and do considerably more damage. Admittedly, those lower his chance to hit, but these spriggans have pretty low armour classes. :)

Douena scurries around the spriggan miraculously avoiding any reprisals from it.

I can't move directly through the enemy's space, like I could with a successful Acrobatics check? Grace isn't exactly explicit on the point, I concede.

Hmmm... I was going by the general rule that you can only move through an opponent's space if that opponent is at least three size categories larger than you and by taking an AoO. Grace negates the AoO but not the size restriction. However, I didn't consider the Acrobatics angle, which does let you go through an opponent's space with a successful check. I suppose one could interpret grace as removing the need for an Acrobatics checks to avoid AoO's, thereby also allowing you to move through an opponent's space. Hmmm... It might be stretching the spell beyond its intended effect, but okay, I'll allow it.

In those kinds of situations I tend to think an impromptu compromise works best, such as allowing an acrobatics check and getting an additional +X on the check (or something along that kin).

"Wise man should not underestimate the lithe and grace of the under-trodden," Mahjik remarks to himself as he sees Douena flit between the hapless spriggans. She's reckless! She's isolated herself on the other side - I must stop this creature from acting at all costs. Mahjik slips by Sasha to I155and purposefully drills his right hand's index and middle fingers into the nape of the Spriggan before him - not enough power to severe vital tissues, but enough to disrupt the flow of the vessels inside. With the luck of the fates enough to stun the creature stiff.

Mahjik's subsequent blow also cause fairly minor damage, but it also strikes a vital nerve, causing the spriggan to drop its halberd and stumble aimlessly. It is stunned.

Sasha then steps in to attack as well (5-ft step to J 155).

Sasha rapier at #2, bless: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 1 = 15 -- hit
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sasha kukri at #2, bless: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 1 = 20 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Both her attacks manage to draw blood, but are only minor scratches.

Next Up: Tar'kanas, Ishirou, Makoa, Alton, Untari, Lorenz, Shokambe, Jask, Pezock, Urza, Spriggans, Douena, Mahjik, Sasha.

Tar'kanas nocks an arrow as he awaits to see what unfolds between the spriggan and his companion, as well as what happens amongst the rest of the group with the other three creatures.

Will delay until after Untari.

Ishirou waits for Jask to do further healing before moving. Delay until after Jask.

Next Up: Makoa, Alton, Untari, Tar'kanas, Lorenz, Shokambe, Jask, Ishirou, Pezock, Urza, Spriggans, Douena, Mahjik, Sasha.

Ah crap, forgot about trying to tumble through their reach

Male Half-Orc Barbarian(Totem Warrior/Invulnerable Rager) : 2 Druid(Wolf Shaman) : 4

Makoa continues trying to cut down the spriggan with fang and steel

Taking a nasty hit from the spriggan, Untari yells in pain as she attempts to return the favor.

Will wait to post for Tar'kanas. Curious to know what happened with Makoa's and Untari's attacks.

Makoa's axe bites deeply into #2's thigh. The spriggan yells with rage and pain. Unfortunately, Makoa is unable to get a hold on the giant with his bite, as the spriggan looks very close to falling.

Alton Fly check to hover: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 -- success
Alton bite at #5, bless: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 1 = 11 -- miss

Alton snaps at #5, but the spriggan easily sidesteps the bite.

Untari's jaws tear into #1. With a gargled cry, the spriggan collapses in a pool of blood.

Untari's first attack brought it down, so she actually ends up with a move action left if you wish her to take it. Alas, it means she doesn't get to use that critical. :(

Next Up: Move action for Untari, Tar'kanas, Lorenz, Shokambe, Jask, Ishirou, Pezock, Urza, Spriggans, Douena, Mahjik, Sasha, Makoa.

Edit: Move to G 158.

M Elf Ranger 6

Noticing Untari's enemy falling in a pool of his own blood, and another spriggan dropping his weapon, Tar'kanas moves to get a cleaner shot as he takes aim at one of the other two.

Move to E 156; Attack #4

Comp longbow (Str +3) w/PB/DA: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 1 = 11 +1 is bless. Not that it matters with all these dang 2's and 3's I keep rolling.

AC 17; Hp's 42/42; Arrows 75

With her prey fallen, Untari bounds across the grass towards her next target.

Tar'kanas moves fires off an arrow that, unfortunately, flies just over top of #4's shoulder.

Lorenz longbow at #5, Deadly Aim, Rapid Shot 1, bless: 1d20 + 10 - 2 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 10 - 2 - 2 + 1 = 27 -- hit, critical threat
Lorenz critical confirm: 1d20 + 10 - 2 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 10 - 2 - 2 + 1 = 11 -- not confirmed
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 = 13
Lorenz longbow at #5, Deadly Aim, Rapid Shot 2, bless: 1d20 + 10 - 2 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 10 - 2 - 2 + 1 = 16 -- hit
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 = 13

Lorenz sends two arrows flying into #5, one into its chest, and the other a bit lower into its stomach.

Shokambe backs away. Withdraw to C 155.

Jask looks about, trying to quickly judge distances. She moves back a bit (5-ft step to C 156), takes a deep breath, and calls out to Nethys. Channel energy: 1d6 ⇒ 1 The move ensures that none of the spriggans are healed, but unfortunately, the healing also doesn't reach Pezock, Alton, Douena, or Sasha. Double unfortunately, the healing is weak and doesn't help much.

Ishirou takes what he can get and moves perhaps foolishly quickly across the grasses towards #4 (charge to I 158), who swipes as he approaches.

Spriggan #4 AoO halberd at Ishirou: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 -- miss

Ishirou katana at #4, charge, flanking, bless: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 19 -- hit
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 4 + (1, 4) = 13

Ishirou ducks under the spriggan's attack and slices his katana across the front of both legs, leaving a pair of nasty gashes.

ROUND 4

CURRENT EFFECTS:
Barkskin (Mahjik)
Mantis Style (Mahjik)
Bless (whole party)
Shield of faith (Sasha)
Mage armour (Urza)
Stun (spriggan #2) -- will wear off just before Mahjik's turn this round

Pezock slips in beside Ishirou (5-ft step to I 159) and attacks.

Pezock sawtooth sabre at #4, flanking, bless: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 2 + 1 = 21 -- hit
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 3d6 ⇒ (7) + 2 + (6, 4, 5) = 24

"Ha!" he cries triumphantly as his sabre cuts into the spriggan's lower belly. "The bigger they are, the easier they fall!" And sure enough, the spriggan falls.

Next Up: Urza, Spriggans, Douena, Mahjik, Sasha, Makoa, Alton, Untari, Tar'kanas, Lorenz, Shokambe, Jask, Ishirou, Pezock.
