Illa Ashshade |
Illa casts a brief spell and glares at the door. "I'll be the judge of that," she says. She briefly turns to Dyalg. "We might want to get Malmoth in here, though, for a Cleric's point of view."
Translation: to cast detect evil and such. Illa is casting Detect Magic. Spellcraft 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25.

No, I don't think we need them Graah! We'll give the orc army a -1 Morale due to your sabotage. You make it back to the wall as Galvrin and Ill approach the door.
Illa, you don't detect any magic on the door.
Galvrin, the guards exchange looks. "The door's not the problem. Look, you want to go in, you can, but we're not going to stand by if you go crazy too. We'll try not to do anything permanent, but we're not going to let you kill anyone. Maybe you want to leave your weapons out here?"
Illa Ashshade |
Incredibly, Illa's rapier speaks up in flawless Common: "I don't want these louts to hold me. They don't look as if they've washed their hands in the past year! That and they're dirty old hu--"
Illa raps the sword's hilt with a knuckle. "That will do," she says in a very... decided tone of voice. "Just open the door for now so we can look inside, gents. I want to scan for residual magics first, anyway."
Yes, really. Intelligent, communication-capable bond item. ^^ Spend a penny, have lots of fun!
Dyalg Lemseth |
Dyalg nods to Corvus, ”I’m going to go check on the food supplies. I’m interested in what Graah! was to say about the orc camp.” He descends the stairs and heads to the kitchen. Once there he asks the cooks how much food they have for the garrison, how often they get resupplied, and how secure the food is.

The guard looks nervous as Galvrin's voice comes from behind him, but he and his companion step aside just as Corvus and Graah arrive.
With a five-foot antechamber, it's hard for him to see fully into the room, but splattered blood covers everything he can see in the chamber, where half a dozen men and women lay dead among a knocked-over wooden
table and shattered chairs.
You'll have to enter to get any further details.
Downstairs, Dyalg is shown to the kitchem, where smells of baking bread and bubbling stews emanate from this warm chamber’s stove. A massive butcher block is scarred with knife cuts from numerous blades scattered around, piled on every surface along with serving trenchers, wooden spoons and other cooking implements. A well leads to a water source below.
Three cooks -- two men and a woman who introduce themselves as Worl, Tanug and Theralia -- are hard at work, getting food out to the soldiers before they collapse into their beds or return to their duties around the garrison.
They show you one storeroom -- one attached directly to the kitchen, which they say contains supplies such as flour, grain and cooking oil -- and say a second one is downstairs, with cured meats, ale and wine, and water stores.
Resupplies come every month, and aren't due for another couple weeks.
Asked about security, the cooks shrug. If an enemy can get in past all the soldiers to where the stores are kept, they say, the stores are probably the last thing they have to worry about.
I've added links to fort maps; I'll work on getting a legend up to let you know which rooms are which later today.

Weapons lie next to four armored bodies, one of which appears as if it was devoured by insects. A fifth man wears robes, and lays with a wand next to his body, while a sixth lays beheaded, surprise etched on his face a few feet away from his body. Notes and maps posted on the walls are obscured by scorch marks and gore.
Before you can look any closer, though, the smell of blood suddenly fills your nose and you hear what sounds like screaming and weapons clashing.
Galvrin, you can take a single standard action.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Galvrin |
also, if attacked (unless they are quite obviously mindless undead), Galvrin will manifest Untouchable Aura as an immediate action (expending his psionic focus), forcing attackers to make a DC 17 Will save or lose their attack action as they recoil in fear, and their nightmares come alive inside their minds.

A blood-red haze suddenly fills your vision, and anger fills you, a voice urging you to kill!
Will save DC 13 or you're under the effects of murderous command for one round.

Anyone else doing anything?
Resisting the sudden urge to kill, Galvrin begins looking around.
The bodies include a grizzles man missing one eye -- seemingly an old wound -- who appears to have been eaten by insects. A blonde woman, a morningstar near her hand, clearly died by flame, her face ruined with burns. A massive black man has an arrow protruding from his throat, while a brunette woman with a bow by her body and a half-elf with various pouches both have numerous wounds. A final man was beheaded, surprise etched on his lifeless face.
Corvus IGMH |
New to the scene, Graah! tries to look into the room by crouching and peering under the collective legs of those in front.
"Tindakan kanggo mangan ana ing?"
** spoiler omitted **
Before Corvus can respond to Graah!, Galvrin shares his news. She looks at the goblin. "Wonder if it works on goblins too? Trouble is, if it does, I don't want to be around to find out."

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Galvrin finds two wands, one on the beheaded man, another on the half-elf.
As he looks around for any others, he notices a pair of leather pouches in a corner of the room, both with engraved orc runes.
He also feels a sudden surge of anger again, though as before it passes as he exerts his will.
Graah! |
Graah! puts away his arrow, and after handing his bow to Corvus (his only weapon), he scampers up the wall and enters the room along the ceiling, seeing as all the longshanks are crowding the bottom of the door.
Will Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Feeling the anger, but not letting it take hold of him, Graah! drops down to the floor and begins to help the ugly long legs search the bodies for useful or suspicious items.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30

"I'd come in and see, but if that spell mucks up my brain I'll start flinging around magic," Illa says, dryly. "Can you show it to me?"

You sense a faint enchantment spell from the full pouch and a lingering trace from the other. You suspect it somehow fills its subjects with rage.
Aura faint enchantment; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 750 gp; Weight —
Description
So fine it almost looks like liquid, this scarlet dust smells strongly of rusted metal.
Thrown as a splash weapon with a range increment of 10 feet, a pouch of crimson rage dust creates a cloud of dust in a 10-foot cube that lasts for one round. Each round that a creature inhales the dust, it must make a DC 13 Will save or suffer an all-consuming fury, affected as the spells rage and murderous command for five rounds.
If thrown into a vapor such as a cloud or smoke, the dust spreads in up to a 20-ft. radius throughout the vapor, which absorbs it and turns a lurid red. Any creature that breathes in the vapor is treated as inhaling the dust. The dust affects the vapor for up to 1 minute, its magic dissipating if the vapor is dispersed more quickly. Its effects stack with any other magical properties the vapor may have.
The dust can also be added to an alchemical item such as a smokestick or bomb, taking effect when the item is activated.
The dust's magic is expended after it is used.
Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, murderous command (Ultimate Magic), rage; Cost 375 gp
Graah, what are you doing? Dyalg, I know you're not with the group and this is probably all happening at the same time as you're doing stuff with the food stores, but just want to make sure you're still with us.
Illa Ashshade |
"Tch!" Illa says, baring her teeth in disgust. "I know that stuff! It's crimson rage dust, it drives anyone who inhales it and can't overcome the toxin into a killing rampage. We need to contain the unused dust in an airtight container, and this room needs to be cleansed as quickly as possible."
Any tips on how to cleanse the room?
Illa Ashshade |
"Don't just put it in your pocket! One tiny hole and you could spread a killing rage through the whole fort!" Illa says, wide-eyed. She addresses one of the guards. "Do you know where to get a box with a tight-fitting lid and a lock? Yes? Go get it, and hurry! That stuff is dangerous beyond belief!"
Turning back to Galvrin, Illa replies: "It's supposed to lose its effectiveness after use. Unfortunately, the only way to use it is to unleash it on some victim... Hmmm..."
Illa turns to the sergeant. "Do we have any smoke bombs, perhaps...?"
motteditor RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 |
It should be fine, as any other magical dust, contained in the pouch.
You don't detect any lingering trace of the magic in the room itself, so whatever's driving people into a killing frenzy is not the dust. You can give me a Know (religion) check if you'd like.
Hal looks dubious. "I'll see what I can find," he says as he turns to leave, though it's not clear if he's talking about the box or the bomb.
Illa Ashshade |
"Because if we have a smoke bomb," Illa says, turning to Corvus and Graah with what might be termed a nasty grin on a face not so clearly Elven, "I have a little job for you guys and the roc that is probably right up your alley."
Graah! |
Graah! Continues to look over the bodies. As the suspicious issues seem to have been sorted out, he is now a bit more interested in the useful. He checks over the bodies again for things that appear to be of particular usefulness.
When Illa makes mention of her idea, Graah!'s head swivels around to regard her. Catching on to her meaning right away, his wide face splits into an evil looking grin.

Corvus IGMH |
When Illa makes mention of her idea, Graah!'s head swivels around to regard her. Catching on to her meaning right away, his wide face splits into an evil looking grin.
Corvus knows that grin well and hopes it has everything to do with Illa's suggestion and nothing to do with the crimson dust.
