Medium Encumbrance limits it to +3.

Nivel Klist |

Yep, thing is all this stuff is "personal" like armor and weapons so I can't do anything about it now. Studded armor is fairly heavy. Well, if you want to carry his backpack and things, hmm, let me take a look.

Nivel Klist |

OK Gris, if you take Nivel's MW Backpack he'll be good. I'll have my weapons, armor, arrows and a belt pouch with a potion in it.

If playing with normal turn based rules, in this situation I guess while everybody takes their turn talking or doing nothing, Morg could have delayed his turn to go last in a round and then cast his spell, which has the effect of a surprise round. But obviously you normally don't treat talking encounters as going in turns and rounds..
I do remember reading one play by post encounter with a non agressive undead and every one was effectively talking in order of initiative, without doing anything else.. Obviously with an undead you never know when it could turn hostile, so it does make some sense but I personally don't like to play like that. So what to do if you don't roll initiative during a talk encounter and that encounter suddenly turns into combat?
If opponents are aware of you, in real time they will react instantly as soon as for example you draw your sword or you start casting a spell. I can't remember that there's a rule which gives advantage on initiative in such cases where someone suddenly initiates combat.
Initially I thought since Morg's binding darkness is a standard action, there would be some perceivable preparation, and everybody could react to that, but with spell-like abilities who only need mental focus, I guess they could be treated as giving a surprise round for that one character only?

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

Sometimes, not everyone is involved in the surprise round. He gets his/her one action off (possible AoO, if threatened)? Then initiative... or, he's treated as the top of initiative and has his "other action" left?
I'd think only an immediate action (like an AoO or contingent) could interupt it.
Unsure.
Sorry for the trouble and thank you for rolling with it.

Don Saint -GM |

If you're interested, you could read this conversation about initiative (see link).
Some quotes, quite funny actually:
"It is more of a gameplay thing than a logic thing. If you flip the scenario, it wouldn't be fair for the players if the enemy decided to shoot first and they could do nothing to anticipate the attack.
I would personally have the two characters roll something in opposition (sleight of hand vs perception, bluff vs sense motive, etc...), with the winner getting the first action. From a role-playing perspective: you could say that Greedo noticed Han tensing up, and decided to pull the trigger to pre-empt his attack.
I think it is important to reinforce that PCs DO NOT get free actions by initiating combat spontaneously. I have had players try to walk around dungeons with readied actions (I shoot anything evil-looking as soon as I see it), or attempt to initiate combat with a "surprise action" during a dialogue sequence (I cut him off mid-sentence... with my great sword). It encourages a trigger-happy game style, and can trivialize many encounters."
"i played a game with your flipped scenario one time and it was awful. we'd be talking to the enemy, weapons drawn, and when they'd initiate combat they'd always get a surprise round. if they rolled well on their initiative they'd get two attacks before we got one, which is deadly in a game of D&D.
you want to talk about encouraging trigger-happy gaming? we started attacking everything on-sight rather than risk being subjected to a surprise round. one time that DM threw an NPC at us that he clearly had plans for and we attacked the guy before he could even get a word out. he commented afterwards on us being so quick to rush into battle and we simply told him that the alternative was surprise rounds and our only option to avoid them was to attack first, always.
in the game i DM now one of my players tried to get a surprise round by breaking parley. i told him that the bad guy was well aware that a fight could start at any moment and ready for his attack. when he persisted i simply asked him if he wanted enemies getting a surprise round every time they attacked first and he stopped."

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

I don't think we're abusing anyrhing, if you do please call me/us on it. I even said consider him top of init, so there are no extra actions given.
I fully admit trying to gain situational advantage of the map/positions and the scenario/robes. But we worked on setting it up or planning.
Those guys seem a bit nutzo in both quoted scenarios.

Don Saint -GM |

Because nobody has posted for several days, I guess I need to give some comments about the current situation.
You have seen city guards in town, you have been to the garrison of Tamran, and the current group of soldiers looks a lot like them. Of course you don't know for sure if these are real city guards or perhaps disguised cultists, but in any case combat seems difficult to avoid now and supposing that you win, but even one of them escapes, you might soon have to deal with the whole city garrison and in that case there's little Marshal Gavirk can do to help you without evidence about the cult's wrongdoings.

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

What do you mean, try... we got'em dead to rites (fitting in a temple).
Little Binding Darkness, some Color Spray... nighty night, rabbit.
Can we do a know local to see if we recognize them or saw them when we spoke to the other dude?

Don Saint -GM |

I didn't mean to say that you can't win this battle, just that you can always take the risk of killing a town guard, if you really want to :) Meaningless humor from my side..
You don't recognize any of them personally, but based on their weapons and armor you could easily assume that they are town guards. In the current situation, I would consider this a hidden GM roll.

Don Saint -GM |

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

I've read up on it, just wondering of you had specific ideas. I'm fine going by the book.
We can do command word (1800gp), 3x/day (times 0.6 = 1080gp), usable only by dwarves (times 0.7 = 756gp)?
756gp value, 378gp cost and craftable in 1 day dedicated or... 4 adventuring days.

Don Saint -GM |

Finding the amulets stolen from the Crypt of the Everflame is your main objective (as requested by the spirit of Kassen in the previous quest). There are three amulets who combined form the key to a vault containing a powerful artifact. Two amulets have been stolen by a group led by a magic user wearing the mask of this cult and the recruitment for that task had been done in the Ranger's Lament, the same tavern where you obtained your entry into the cult. The location of the third amulet is still unknown.
The only tunnel you have seen is the one you just went through.

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

Oh, forgot about leveling.
Also, Morg has to buy crafting supplies worth 378 gp, not sure if we have that money yet. Or what exactly he's buying since he's got "Eschew Materials". A nice glove or pair, gemstones to crush I suppose.
Not sure how much hand waving you're doing, if any.

Don Saint -GM |

Since you are not safe anymore within town and searching for crafting supplies will take some time, you will have to specify this in more detail. For example: do you ask people for info where to find these supplies, do you go alone to buy them?
For having eschew materials, I will give a 10% discount on crafting supplies.

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

Hey now... not to be ungrateful, but I wasn't angling for a discount. No need.
I just meant I didn't know what supplies would be needed... so I imagined semi-precious stones in some quantity. An adamantine miniature mortar and pestle, grind them up... just something for the RP.
They don't have to be "crafting supplies" could just be purchased from a jeweler. Gloves from a clothing shop, etc... Nothing about it has to scream magic! If we picked up gems, I should be able to use those... can't remember.

Don Saint -GM |

The material component for color spray is red, yellow, and blue powder or colored sand. You will need a decent amount of those as well as a masterwork glove.
During this adventure you found 4 moonstones. I think that's all the gems you have.
You will have to look for those components in town and sufficient amounts of specifically colored sand/powder will require some time to find. It could be easier to simply look for colored jewels and grind them, but you will still need to find someone selling those, as well as the tool used for grinding.

Don Saint -GM |

It seems like we arrived at a stalemate about what to do?
The situation is like this: if the Marshall learns about the evidence you gathered, it will not help you a lot.. if you decide to travel to the isle of terror right away, your quest will continue in the right direction, but it will be without some clues you could have gathered during your stay in Tamran.

Nivel Klist |

I think the idea of going back inside the temple was still open after we gathered ourselves, though I'm not sure how much more could be learned in there. I would like to learn what had happened in front of the temple as we were leaving once I regain my dexterity so I can snoop around. That may help us.

Morg "Tinker" Blackflame |

Are you guys being too "linear", maybe we need to think "sandbox". I don't care either way, except that... I'd like to go deal with the Isle (and preferably level again) and return to the temple with FIREBALLZ!
That's what I'm picking up from the DM... I could be wrong.
Barring that, I'm up to itch whatever jones you guys have as long as we rest for one night (without alerting anyone, Marshal included) to replenish spells.

Kyra Kross |

......, but it will be without some clues you could have gathered during your stay in Tamran.
This is what I got out of GM's post. Betcha that we get a clue that will allow us into a secret room on the isle which contains a Wand of Fireballs. Great Balls of Fire!!!
Anyways....everyone....Merry Christmas. Kyra casts a Bless spell on you all. ;-)
