Uruelleth matches Kilarra's drunken enthusiasm with wild abandon. When morning arrives, he aches all over, but it's the best kind of ache and he savors it.

When the morning light brightens the sky, he stoically dons his armor and gear, but gives several approving looks to Kilarra if she decided to stay in his bed until morning.

Before the sun has risen to the treetops, he is standing at the gates to the palace.

Which Kilarra appreciates, Vorya. Though she teases you mercilessly for it.

Kilarra wakes up when Uruelleth's getting dressed, sore, tired and with a throbbing headache.

"It is way too early to be awake," she mutters.

She growls but gets up, and pours herself some water, mixing in an alchemist's kindness to drink. "You want one? she asks, still butt-naked.

If he wants one she'll make him one, then she drinks the fizzy thing with a grimace. "Tastes worse than that fruity sh** from last night."

Then she gets up and starts getting dressed, smacking Ruel's butt as she wanders by to get her clothes and gear from wherever they got tossed last night. She finds some under the bed, and others on a dresser. Where her last sock has gone she has no idea.

Her horrible hangover passes in only ten minutes, thanks to the fizzy alchemical brew, and though she's not ready nearly as quick as Ruel, she gets there.

"I''ll catch up," she says with a smirk if Ruel looks impatient to leave. "You don't have to hold my hand," she jokes.

Kilarra's the last to arrive, but thanks to Ruel getting up so early, she got there without being obnoxiously late.

"Miss me?" she asks the group with a smirk as she arrives a bit too late.

I have once again heard of the organization known as the Red Mantis. I had sincerely hoped I had heard the last of them. They came to me again and insisted I use their services. I not-so-politely declined again and found myself growing angry. It seems they are a much worse threat to Golarion than I had realized. The elf I had imprisoned was unable to give more details about the group and that seems to be a common theme. As secretive as the group is, there has to be a way to find out more about them. Time will tell.

From the journal of Queen Telandia Edasseril of Kyonin
Dated the 2nd of Abadius, 4710 AR

-----

Fireday, the 13th of Lamashan, 4717 AR

Mellisar greets each of you as you arrive back at the palace. He doesn’t seem pleased with those of you who arrive late.

“The monarchs have assembled and are waiting for you. Please, follow me.”

The elven steward leads you all through the palace’s entrance and into the Quintumvirate’s chamber. The five monarchs are each seated where they had been the previous day. They once again rise as you enter.

Telandia raises her hand in a simple greeting before saying, “I’m glad you’ve returned. I was starting to fear you had each decided against the mission. I certainly would not blame you if you had. But I am grateful you decided to return."

A sad expression crosses her face as she says, “I see Zeldana and her animal companion did not return. While I am saddened, I’m also thankful that we gave each of you an opportunity to decline the mission. Hopefully she will find peace and comfort elsewhere.”

Taking a deep breath, Telandia changes the subject. “Now is the time for you to depart to Port Peril. If you have anything else to ask us before you leave, now is the time to do so. Otherwise, I will begin casting Teleportation Circle for your departure.”

Khemet looks at each of you for a moment before saying, “I will be candid with you. I fully expect most, if not all of you, to die on this mission. Know that you are serving a cause greater than yourselves. This is not a duty to take on lightly. While you each have different stories, personalities, and talents, you all share a common goal. Don’t let the Red Mantis divide you. Stay committed to each other and to your mission.”

Borogrim slams the head of his axe on the ground before saying, “Make the Red Mantis bastards pay for every life they’ve taken. Don’t hold back, because as sure as the nine Hells burn, they won’t hold back.”

Stavian nods approvingly at Khemet and Borogrim’s statements, then he says, “You represent the finest monarchs of Golarion, so we expect you to act that way. Set an example and make us proud.”

Galfrey also looks at each of you for a moment, but her expression is a bit softer as she does so. She says, “The Red Mantis represent a great evil that has festered for too long. Golarion must be purged of their taint. This mission you are embarking on is the next step in removing them from existence. They corrupt those who once were good and murder without regard for whether or not someone deserves death. Please, find a way to end the Red Mantis.”

Telandia speaks again and says, “So… do you have any unfinished business or any final questions before departing?”

Vorya wonders why Zeldana didn't come back. Perhaps she is the smart one. he thought on reflection. As the Queen made clear, this was a very risky mission. Going against the Red Mantis was a dangerous course of action. Taking them on on their home turf? Foolhardy.

He does laugh at 'finest monarchs'. That was a bit of a egotistical statement but perhaps royalty had to be so.

'Well, I can't speak for the others, but I will do all in my power to fulfill this Pact." Then he shrugs, 'I have nothing else to say.'

"As a wise man once told me, 'Sooner begun is sooner done'.

Talivar had done everything he could to prepare. With an escort of several guards he'd taken a ridiculously large sum of money and gone shopping. Iadara had several very discreet and very hard to find shops that dealt in arcane paraphernalia for a select clientele. Boy did they know how to charge! He'd spent the better part of ten thousand gold, and all he had to show for it was a handful of funny looking sticks, some of which where used!

Handing them out he said earnestly, "With these we have a fighting chance. Lets get this done."

With everyone present and prepared to depart, Queen Telandia begins speaking the necessary incantation to activate the Teleportation Circle scroll. A five foot circle begins to glow faintly, though it would be difficult to see for those who didn’t know what to look for.

The casting of the spell seems to take forever, but in reality only ten minutes pass before the teleportation circle is ready for use.

Queen Telandia puts away the used scroll and addresses you all for a final time. “This portal will take you straight to Port Peril. You should arrive directly in front of the Ruby’s Splendor. It will depart as soon as you are all onboard.

“According to Captain Dakon and First Mate Driara's responses to our sending spells, it should take about a week and a half to arrive in Ilizmagorti. That’s assuming the Eye of Abendego doesn’t interfere and you don’t encounter any other delays along the way. As we mentioned, the ship is fully manned should you encounter any difficulties.

“We don’t believe your arrival in Ilizmagorti should create waves, literal, metaphorical, or otherwise. But if it does, you may have to act quickly to find a base of operations and lie low for a time till things calm down.”

Queen Telandia looks up toward the palace’s ceiling for a moment, before looking back at you and saying, “Blessed is the long road, the destination, the homeward path, and all who make the journey. Let each dream be a bright star in the night sky of your mind, lighting your path in the day... Be ready for challenges and unexpected friends. I can’t imagine what you will face, but you must find the strength to face it. Now go with the blessing of the Song of the Spheres.”

Telandia gestures toward the teleportation circle, indicating that it’s time for you to depart.

One-by-one, you enter the circle and vanish from the palace, Iadara, Kyonin, and Avistan entirely. The next moment, you find yourselves briefly overwhelmed by the smell of saltwater and tobacco as you each bump into each other once you emerge on the other side of the portal into Port Peril’s Crescent Harbor.

Those familiar with Port Peril would know that Crescent Harbor’s isn’t the port’s main harbor. For a ship to be in Crescent Harbor means that it hasn’t been in Port Peril long, doesn’t plan to stay long, or both.

Just as Queen Telandia indicated, the Ruby’s Splendor rises directly in front of you. Even covered in grime and made to look like a regular pirate ship, it is an impressive sight. The mainmast rises in the middle of ship with a crow’s nest at the top. Two smaller masts flank it near the bow and stern.

A wooden walkway invites you to go onto the ship's main deck where over a dozen crewmembers are busy making final preparations for departure. As soon as you board, you are personally greeted by the ship’s captain and first mate.

Captain Dakon Fineas of Taldor gives each of you a terse nod before saying, “Welcome aboard the Ruby’s Splendor. I’m Captain Dakon Fineas. Just Captain Fineas will do.”

He gestures over at his first mate as he says, “This is my first mate, Driara Milosa.”

Driara smiles at you and says, “Good to finally meet the chosen few. I have heard much of you. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for the monarchs to decide who to pick.”

“Unless they didn’t have many options, of course,” the Captain adds.

Driara shrugs and says, “Either way, it’s good to finally meet you. If you want to get settled in, your cots are on the first level belowdecks.”

“Thank you, Driara. You should help with final preparations,” the Captain says in no uncertain terms. Driara nods and goes to help the rest of the crew.

Turning back to you, Captain Fineas says, “We’ll be underway in about ten minutes now that you’ve arrived. I don’t know about you, but I would rather not stay harbored in this den of debauchery for a minute more than I must.

“There is one other person you should meet before we depart.” The Captain turns toward the stern of the ship and shouts toward a dark-haired human woman near the ship’s wheel. “Makori! Come greet our passengers!”

A few moments later, the short and lithe woman arrives to stand next to the Captain. She seems to be examining you, but doesn’t offer a greeting. Unliken the elven attire of Driara and the Taldane uniform of Dakon, Makori’s clothing is more common and seems a bit less well-kept.

“This is Makori,” The Captain explains. “She’s our navigator. She’s also the only one onboard who’s been to Mediogalti Island and Ilizmagorti before, so we’ll be relying on her to get us there in one piece.” Dakon looks over at Makori to see how she reacts to his statement, but her face remains largely expressionless.

The Captain continues, “We picked her up here in Port Peril, so I’m sure you’ll want to ask her some questions like we did. I wouldn’t pry too much, though, as she was the only person we could find that was willing to take us to Ilizmagorti.”

Makori, for her part, continues to remain expressionless and seemingly emotionless. She was either ignoring the Captain or didn’t care what he said.

After a few moments of silence, Makori finally speaks and says, “My name is Makori. My last name is inconsequential. What do you want to know about me so we can get this ship underway?”

Added pictures of Dakon, Driara, and Makori to the info slides. Feel free to ask questions of all three or other crew members. There isn’t really time to do anything in Port Peril, so I would advise against leaving the ship if you don’t want to be left behind.

Talivar blinks as he steps through into the sudden sudden sun light. He takes one look at Port Peril, clearly a seedy and dangerous place, and turns his back on it. In the dark roads ahead this place would surely pale into insignificance.

Talivar shrugged at the Captain, before replying amicably, "Lets hope they chose wisely."

The meeting with Makori was awkward to say the least. As the silence wore on, he asked tentatively, "I take it you're being paid handsomely for your services? If so you won't mind showing us on a map the course you propose to take."

Talivar found himself utterly unable to read Makori, she might be honest, she might not. Later in his cabin he would check her proposed route against his own maps and charts. Trust no one

Vorya finds the teleportation disconcerting. He always estimated travel by time, not distance. Days to the next town, weeks to the next city, months by ship to new lands. This instant travel was...off-putting. He tried to set his mental compass to a new time and place as they got onto the ship.

He had never traveled much in the Shackles. Few here had the means or needs to hire an assassin. A rusty cutlass often served better. He somewhat regretted not having a chance to look around.

He sizes up their new new 'allies', suspecting everything. It would be all too easy for either of them, or both, to be Red Mantis agents. Frankly, Vorya assumed getting to the jungle to be the more dangerous part. It was hard to sneak up in the wilds...

While Kilarra isn’t very familiar with the city itself, only knowing that it is the capital of the Shackles, she does know a bit about the area in which it is found. Port Peril resides south of Jeopardy Bay and sits on the mainland outside the frenzied grasp of the Eye of Abendego and west of the mountainous Terwa Uplands.

GM Rolls:
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 271d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

For Kilarra, Talivar, and Vorya, Makori proves to be completely unreadable. Her blank expression is likely responsible for her status as an enigma.

Makori’s expression hardly changes at Kilarra’s words. The woman shrugs and says, “I’m not here to be your friend. I’m here to give directions.”

Kilarra’s able to make it seem as though she doesn’t care at all about Makori, but the navigator’s lips just barely twitch in response.

At Talivar’s inquiry, Makori says, “I’m being paid a fair sum, at least by Port Peril standards. One could argue no sum is worth the risk to travel to Ilizmagorti. But I’ve been there and lived to tell the tale, so I’m more than willing to take a group’s money for an easy voyage. Cheliax and other nations don’t monitor the waterways that lead to Ilizmagorti, so it should be an uneventful trip. I’m afraid you’ll find Ilizmagorti to be a relatively dull city. Other than the Red Mantis lackeys walking around in their obnoxious armor, there’s not much there that you can’t find here in Port Peril.”

Based on her response, it's difficult to tell for sure whether or not she knows the true nature of the group's mission. If she does, she's doing a good job of keeping that fact a secret.

Makori pulls out a map from her coat and unrolls it quickly. The map she pulls out is similar to the one in the info slides. It seems Talivar isn’t the first person to ask her about their route. “We’ll be leaving Port Peril and heading northwest for the Arcadian Ocean’s open waters. From there, we’ll keep heading northwest, staying clear of the Eye of Abendego. We could skirt the eastern edge of Mediogalti Island, but that would risk running into rough seas from the hurricane. So we’ll be going around the island’s western side instead. We’ll round the island before arriving at Ilizmagorti which is on the northern side of the island.”

Whenever Talivar goes to check Makori’s route, he’ll see that her information was accurate, as far as he can tell. It’s not the most direct route, but it’s likely the safest. As safe as possible when travelling to an island run by assassins, anyway.

Vorya, for his part, believes the Captain is a bit overzealous in his role, but is otherwise a competent individual and one committed to the party’s mission.

While mixing with the others on the ship, Kilarra’s unable to pick up on much of the conversation with Makori due to the general din onboard as final preparations are made for departure.

Vorya, given his past experience with a certain assassin’s guild, is able to tell that there seems to be some tension among the crew. Perhaps they’ve all been told the purpose of the mission. If so, that might explain some of their nervousness. Some of the crew also seem to be glancing over at Captain Dakon quite a bit and look especially nervous when they do so.

Despite Vorya’s expert observations, he also notes that several of the crew members are watching him as he goes about his spy work. He isn’t as stealthy as he might like to be.

Going to hold off on advancing things to give Talia and Uruelleth a chance to chime in. Considering the messageboard was down for about ten hours today, that could have easily been the time when they’re normally able to post. For reference purposes, the conversation with Captain Fineas and Makori is still considered to be happening, if anyone wants to ask more questions.

Talia is highly on edge while on the boat. She hated small enclosed situations that were difficult to escape from, and therefore feels a little skittish about being on the water. Like the others as part of her team, she eyes the navigator carefully, trying to sense what drives her.

"Why makes you willing to work against the Red Mantis by allowing us passage into Ilizmagorti? Surely it isn't something as boring as money now is it?" she asks offhandly, trying to get a feel for the woman.

Uruelleth remains quiet while the teleport spell is cast to hide his nervousness about the powerful magics being used. Despite that, he stepped through without hesitation.

The instant change in climate, time of day and position of the sun in the sky amazed the reincarnated elf. He breathed deep the salt air and noted crisp wind blowing off the ocean, a fair counter to the morning sun which threatened to be blazing hot later in the day.

Similarly, he marveled at the massive ship moored at the dock. The boats on Lake Encarthan had impressed him initially, but these ships with their towering masts and huge bulk absolutely overwhelmed anything he had seen earlier. He found it impossible not to gawk.

Uruelleth paid attention to the introductions, though his attention was frequently stolen by another unexpected sight both on the ship and elsewhere on the horizon.

He also attempted to scrutinize their guide to Mediogalti, but took no real interest in their route. He had to accept that he had no skills that would help them arrive at their destination and was completely at their mercy, though he took some comfort that Talivar studied the maps intently.

Makori shrugs at Talia’s question and says, “You obviously haven’t been around pirates much, have you? Money is quite the motivator. That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing Ilizmagorti in pirate hands. It was for a time, a long while back.”

Uruelleth isn’t able to get a read on Makori either.

Kilarra, for her part, notices the same things Vorya does. Additionally, she’s able to tell that some of the crew don’t seem to like Captain Fineas. Some of the crew, mostly those who don’t seem to like Captain Fineas, seem to be reacting more positively toward First Mate Driara.

Once your initial questions are at an end, everyone hears a shout as a tall and lanky man descends on a swinging rope. It looks like his descent began from the crow’s nest. His journey finishes as he lets go of the rope and gently touches down on the ship’s deck.

“Woohoo! That never gets old,” he says as he walks over to the group.

“This over eager man,” the Captain says, “is the ship’s unofficial second mate. The monarchs required each of the ship’s leads to come from different nations represented by the monarchs. I’m from Taldor, Driara’s from Kyonin, and Jimell here claims to be from Mendev.”

Jimell smiles widely and replies, “That’s me, the one and only Jimell Yikan. People doubt me when I tell them I’m from Mendev because they assume everyone there has to be super serious and formal like. I'm out to prove them wrong.

"After the Worldwound closed, I got an itch to travel and somehow wound up here. I was the only one available to represent Mendev when the time came, so here I am!”

The Captain does his best to keep a straight face as he says, “Like I said, he is our unofficial second mate. Officially, he’s our lookout. We’ll be relying on him… for better or for worse… to make sure we don’t run aground or encounter anything nasty.”

“Yep, that’s me,” Jimell says. “By the way, Cap, the ship’s ready to go as far as I can tell. Things looked good from up above.”

Captain Fineas nods and says, “Very good. We’ll be underway momentarily.”

Once Jimell leaves to return to his post in the crow’s nest, the Captain says, “As you can see, we have a… diverse… crew for this mission. I realize you are all passengers, but it will take over a week to get there, under the best of circumstances. I suggest you make yourselves useful by finding a job to help with. The deck will need swabbing, sails will need rigging, meals will need to be made, Jimell will need to sleep once every three days, and a variety of other things. If any of you are good with navigating, I would appreciate you helping Makori out in making sure we stay on course. We aren’t paying her to sleep, but I’m sure she’ll try to sneak in a nap every now and then.”

The Captain keeps a serious face as he speaks. A careful observer would note Makori rolling her eyes whenever he speaks about her. Anyone who checks to see if he’s joking would find that he’s very serious. There are no free lunches on this mission and the Captain expects everyone to help out.

“Say goodbye to dry land,” the Captain finishes, “because you won’t be standing on it again anytime soon.”

Once the local harbormaster gives the all clear, the ship leaves Crescent Harbor and makes for the open waters of the Arcadian Ocean. Several sizable islands lie between you and the ocean, however, so it will likely still be a day or two before the ship hits open water.

Added a picture of Jimell to the info slides.

For your next post, in addition to whatever else you may want to ask or do, pick out and list something that your character can help with on the ship from the things listed above or something else that you think your character could help with on a ship.

Kiarra notes the tension between with crew with a smirk. She ignores Jimell's introduction, still pretending she's not paying attention, and turns to watch the ocean as the ship begins to set sail.

She stays there for quire a while, watching the ocean, feeling the wind in her hair and smelling the salty spray of the sea with a calm smile on her face.

Suidice mission or not, I'm lucky to be free... Beats living the rest of my life in prison.

Eventually Kilarra wanders off below decks to pick out a hammock to sleep in. She tosses her bedroll into an empty one to claims it, but keep the rest of her gear strapped on or in her handy haversack.

Deciding she's stalled enough, Kilarra heads back up on deck to find a way to make herself useful.

Scanning the ship she settles on two choices: help out in the lookout and get a birds eye view of the ship, or perform menial labour and ingratiate herself with the crew. She hated hard labour, but she was certain within a day or so she could weasel her way into the crew's good graces...

Depending on what the others want to do, Kilarra would either join Jimell in the crow's nest (which is her preference), or swab the decks and coil rope and other menial tasks. If she does do the hard labour she has every intention of trying to befriend, and integrate with the crew. What's everyone else thinking? Looks like Talia would make an awesome lookout with that +16 perception. So it's likely I'll end up swabbing the deck.

Ruel will probably be a swabber as well (once someone explains to him what the term means), or will be called upon to haul rope and other heavy items from one end of the ship to the other.

"I spent several years in the Andoran Navy, they taught me how to use a sextant and compass and read nautical charts. I'm more than happy to help Makori out." replied Talivar quietly. She had suggested a long but hopefully safe route. The only niggling problem being it was rather off the beaten track, if anything happened en route they'd be alone.

Talia crinkles her brow slightly at the prospect of physical labor. It wasn't really her strong suit, and she didn't relish the apparent task in front of her.

As Kilarra looks up to find Talia already heading up to the crow's nest, she shrugs and wanders over to the nearest group of sailors--a pair swabbing the deck.

"Well, doesn't this look like fun," she comments sarcastically. "Need a hand?"

Presuming they let her she grabs scrub a scrub brush, gets on her hands and knees and starts scrubbing (If they've got an extra brush with a long handle she'll use that while standing instead).

To Uruelleth’s question, Captain Fineas says, “The dwarves contributed the ship’s weapons and the Ruby Prince contributed the ship. There are some regular crew members from those nations as well, but not among the officers.”

The Captain smiles when Talia offers to help as lookout. “You certainly can. I was hoping someone would volunteer to help Jimell so I didn’t have to assign someone.” The Captain pauses to look Talia up and down. “Hmm… Aasimar, I take it? Yes, I’ve heard they have good eyesight. One of Grand Prince Stavian’s advisors is an Aasimar, I believe. Hopefully you can provide some wisdom in the midst of all this hullabaloo.”

Both of the sailors are happy to have an extra hand when Kilarra offers it. This is a ship from the Ruby Prince’s personal fleet, so it only has the best scrubbers. Kilarra receives a scrub brush with a long wooden handle that also has hand holds to make scrubbing easier.

So we have Kilarra and Uruelleth helping with swabbing, Talia helping in the crow’s nest, Talivar helping at navigating, and Vorya as tbd.

The ship has smooth sailing for two days. In that time, it makes it out of the main body of islands known as the Shackles and into the open waters of the Arcadian Ocean.

-----

Moonday, the 16th of Lamashan, 4717 AR

It’s mid morning on the third day as the ship passes the last large island. The Eye of Abendego comes into clear view. The storm is massive, larger than anything any of you would likely have seen before. All of Kyonin could fit inside it, two times over.

Even nearly a hundred miles from the outer storm wall, a light breeze can be felt.

“It isn’t natural!” One of the dwarven sailors says loud enough for those on deck to hear. “Dwarves aren’t supposed to be away from dry land. Why did I ever agree to this operation?”

Captain Fineas was among those who heard the dwarf. The Captain walks over to the dwarf and says, “What is your name, sailor?”

“I figured the Captain of the ship would know it,” the dwarf says with a frown. “But it’s Longmantle, Ragnar Longmantle.”

“Sailor Longmantle, you knew what you signed up for when you came aboard this vessel. I expect no complaints going forward. We’re all in the same boat, literally and metaphorically.”

First Mate Driara also heard Ragnar and walked over shortly after the Captain did. “Captain, the sailor is clearly just scared. Perhaps we should give him a break. We have plenty of other hands aboard.”

Captain Fineas scowls at his first mate and says, “And what happens when the other hands decide they’re scared, hm? Are we going to let all of them take a break? Everyone has a role on this ship and the ship only operates efficiently when everyone does their role.”

The Captain looks over at you, the chosen party, and says, “What do you think, can we let this dwarf take a ‘break’ and risk others wanting to have a ‘break’ too?”

“That’s not fair, Fineas. It’s just one dwarf,” Driara says.

“One dwarf becomes two, then two becomes three, and it spirals out of control faster than the Eye of Abendego.”

At this point, Driara also looks over at you and says, “So what do you think? What should we do about this lone dwarf?”

The dwarf in question, Ragnar Longmantle, says, “Do I get a chance to speak for myself? Or are you two just going to talk in front of me like I’m not even here? I’m not the only one who’s feeling this way. I might be the only one willing to say it, but most of the crew is feeling... unwell… about this whole thing.”

Captain Fineas and First Mate Driara look at you again, indicating it’s time for you to voice your opinion on the situation.

DC 15 Sense Motive:
You can tell both Captain Fineas and First Mate Driara are uneasy about the situation. They seem to want you to offer a viable solution.

DC 20 Sense Motive:
Captain Fineas believes what he’s saying. He thinks the situation may spiral out of control if it isn’t nipped in the bud. First Mate Driara is harder to read, but you think she believes the sailor should be given a break.
Ragnar, for his part, seems uneasy about the situation. It doesn't seem he had expected his comments to draw so much attention.

DC 25 Perception:
You notice some of the sailors look uneasy about the conversation. When Ragnar speaks his mind, two in particular opposite the dwarf, a female elf and a male dwarf, seem particularly upset by Ragnar’s words.

I think you all probably know this, but to be safe, only roll once each for Sense Motive and Perception (in that order). If you roll a 20 or higher for Sense Motive, you'll want to view both Sense Motive spoilers.

Taking in the fine scrub brush, Kilarra smiles. "Oh, you spoil me!"

She makes small talk with the sailors, being sure to eavesdrop on other conversations and keep and eye out for Makori. She's used to hard labour, having done plenty while in prison, and is an efficient worker.

"I'm Kilarra. And you are?"

"So, you been on this ship long?"

"Which countries are you from?"

Seeing Ruel looking around without purpose, Kilarra smirks at him. "Quit slacking off, lazy!" she jokes. "Do some real work!"

She grabs an extra scrub brush and hands it to Ruel. "Come on. Like this. And put your back into it!"

She winks at him and then goes back to trying to befriend the sailors.

"You ever sailed this way before?"

----

Over the course of the next few days Kilarra follows the same schedule as the lowest ranking sailors. She gets up the same time they do, eats in the mess alongside them, jokes and teases them all in turn, and works as long as they do. She tries to circulate each day, keeping to her duties, but being sure to meet a bunch of different people on the ship during meal and break times. She doesn't move to socialize with the higher-ranking sailors or the officers. She also doesn't try to socialize with any of her comrades that place themselves in similar positions (she won't be hanging out with Talivar or Talia while on the ship). She tries to make herself just 'one of the crew' in the hopes that she will learn more from them and about the ship and its crew if they feel like she's one of them. And as mentioned earlier she always tries to keep a subtle eye out for Makori.

On the second day she asks about the crew dynamics she noticed as soon as they got on board.

"Wow, this crew seems tense. Is it always like this?" followed by "Really? Why?"

"Man, that rigger seems nervous! What's up with him?"

"That Captain Dakon's a stern guy, ain't he?" (to people who don't seem to like him)

"Is it me, or does the first mate seem a bit... frivolous?" (to people who don't seem to like her).

She doesn't volunteer a course of action when the group is asked an opinion since she doesn't want to set herself apart from the crew. If after being asked that second time she steps forwards and comments:

"Everyone's uneasy. Everyone's tired. It ain't a crime to say it, or think it. But we all know our jobs, don't we?" she looks at the crew as she says this. "We all know what's at stake in these waters. A crew in shambles ain't gonna make it through the Shackles, and it certainly ain't gonna pass by the Eye unscathed. A crew needs to be united. So let's all quit bickering and get to our duties. All of us." She clearly includes the First Mate and the Captain in the statement, since they need to lead by example. Then Kilarra immediately returns to her scrubbing as if she's just a normal deck-hand.

Talivar had been consulting his charts keeping track of the ship's progress, so far they had been making good progress. Hearing raised voices on deck, he ventured outside and he found his eyes drawn to the monstrous storm, whistling low he breathes, "They say that monster of a storm appeared shortly after the death of Aroden." Looking at the dwarven sailor Talivar admits, "Frankly the Eye of Abendego terrifies me, it has a tendency to spawn smaller hurricanes. Seeing something like that is more than enough to make one question the sanity of sailing across the oceans. Thank the gods this is the closest we will approach it, before long we will be shielded by Mediogalti island." Talivar was oblivious to the exact cause of tension (beyond the obvious) but he thought back to his time in the navy, where cohesion and acting as a team were literally drilled into them. Turning to the Mate and the Captain, Talivar says, "We shouldn't dismiss the fears of the crew, Ilizmagorti will be dangerous and the harbor and it's currents are unknown to all but Makori... The thing is the Captain is right, we need everyone to pull together. We can't be second guessing each other on this mission. Maybe we should do some drill and war games Captain? It's something we used to do in the navy. Exercises like dealing with a fire, man over board or skirmishes. I could summon the image of a sea monster and the crew takes pot shots at it. That way if something bad does happen, everyone will know what to do without having to think."

Uruelleth nods at the explanation, the mention of weapons piquing his interest.

Once the ship is underway and the tasks are laid out, he accepts the brush and holy stone rather begrudgingly. He doesn't voice his complaints over the drudgery, but it is quite obvious he does not enjoy the work either.

After the first day, he decides to follow up on his curiosity over the weapons of the ship. Being somewhat familiar with seige weapons -- at least more familiar with them than anything else involved in sailing -- he seeks out the master gunner and offers to provide his assistance in exchange for learning the basics of the ballistae and mangonels.

"I have little taste for washing the floors. I wish for warrior's work. Show me what must be done and I will do it," he says.

-------------------

Though he would not voice it, sailing into the open waters was unnerving. When land disappeared from sight, he forced himself to stop from pacing nervously along the decks. He busied himself with the tasks given to him, trying not to think of the inherent vulnerability they all faced upon these endless waters.

The appearance of the mighty storm at the far horizon did not settle his nerves.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Uruelleth eyes the two crew members who seem upset. Truth be told, he didn't much like it himself. As a warband leader, he would have punished such dissention severely. A break in resolve when battle loomed is disastrous.

He nods vigorously at Talivar's suggestion, but doesn't bother to voice his support. Instead, he moves over to the two upset crew.

"That dwarf makes a mistake, and puts the captain and this whole crew into danger," he says just for the two to hear. "Do you know him? "

Kilarra finds that she is quite adept at maneuvering around the ship and also in getting along with the crew. No one gives her a hard time, so she doesn’t need to push back. It doesn’t appear anyone is suspicious of her either.

The crew still seem a bit tense and some still eye Captain Fineas every now and then.

The ship seems to be in good shape as far as Kilarra’s expert eyes can tell. The crew, other than the incident that ensues, seem to be doing a fine job at their various ship duties.

Uruelleth meets with the ship’s master gunner, a large dwarf named Thrim Silverstar. Thrim explains to Uruelleth the ins and outs of how siege engines work. The ship is equipped with eight heavy ballistae. Two at the bow, two at the stern, and two each on the port and starboard sides of the ship. Thrim offers Uruelleth a position in a ballista crew. There are quite a few others already assigned to the role given the nature of siege weapons.

-----

After the argument breaks out and Kilarra and Talivar speak up, the Captain nods at their words.

“Thank you, both. I think doing our duties sounds like a fine idea,” Captain Fineas says.

“Perhaps war exercises would be helpful,” First Mate Driara says. “It would be a way to provide a change of pace for the crew while still keeping them on their toes.”

The Captain replies, “Very well. Talivar, please arrange for these war games to take place. We still have quite a few days to go, so don’t wear yourself out casting your spells or whatever it is you do. We can rotate the crew who participate so they all have a chance.

"Did you or your fellow party members have any specific ideas in mind other than what you've already stated?”

Meanwhile, Uruelleth goes over and speaks with a pair of crew members who seemed particularly troubled by Ragnar’s words.

The female elf says, “I don’t know him, but I saw him last night. He said many of the same things he did just now. The thing is, he was saying them to himself. I only overheard him as I was going to my hammock to sleep. He kept saying the same things over and over. It almost seemed like he was rehearsing what he was going to say today.”

The male dwarf says, “I don’t know him personally and I didn’t see him talking to himself last night, but he was acting a bit strangely yesterday. He seemed a bit… distant. Like he wasn’t completely himself. Not sure what was going on. And then this happens. It’s quite troubling.”

"Aye aye Captain." replies Talvar and he gets to work. Over the next few hours he liaises with the Mate Driara to device a suitable series of drills. Once everything was decided Talivar in his best Sgt Major's voice explains things to the crew, "All right then! Here's how this is going to work. Over the next few days we're going to have a friendly competition. You're going to be split into three teams, and we're going to put you through your paces. You will be timed as you put out fires, replace the sails, come to battle stations and engage a simulated sea monster. The winning team will get a nice big barrel of rum and light duty the next morning, so you want to win! This needs to be done safely mind, the mate will watching! We will repeat the drill as needed. You may think this is a waste of time, but trust me if something goes wrong you'll be glad of this."

Drills:
Fire Drill: They safely make a lot of smoke with some smoldering rags in a metal brazier, placed in a random part of the ship. Those on fire suppression duty are timed as they race to put it out, with time penalties for pratfalls or dangerous mistakes as judged by Driara.

Torn sail: The crew are timed as they replace a "damaged" top sail. Again they've got to do this as fast as possible without endangering themselves.

Man overboard: A volunteer jumps overboard and the crew are times as they race to rescue them.

Sea monster attack: Talivar summons the image of a Sea Monster (Sea turtle perhaps) and the crew practice using the ship's weapons.

Repelling a boarding action: The crew need to learn where their battle stations are, and they're timed as they rush to arms and to their stations.

Ruel nods his head in agreement. "Troubling indeed. Maybe he is a dwarf who is not cut out for being on the ocean. Or maybe there is something else at work. Pay attention and tell me if this dwarf or -- especially so -- anyone else starts acting the same way. Understood?"

After stepping away from the elf and dwarf, Uruelleth takes a strong interest in the idea of doing drills, but before he allows himself to get distracted he calls Vorya, Talia, and Kilarra to him. Once Talivar finishes explaining his drills to the crew, he motions him over as well.

Once the Mantisbane Pact members are gathered together, Uruelleth begins, "I spoke with a pair of crew members who don't agree with Ragnar's statement that most of the crew feels the same way as him. They say they heard him saying the same thing over and over again, the same thing he told the captain. He was alone in his bed. And another said he wasn't acting like himself."

He folds his arms, frowning. "I hope this is one lone dwarf who is letting the ocean scare him. But it might be something else. But I don't know what that could be, but maybe you lot would know. I'd rather just bash the dwarf's head and tell him he could either swim back home or do his job. But if there's something else going on, we should be on guard."

"Looks like its break time for me, boys," Kilarra jokes with her fellow swabbers as Uruelleth pulls her aside.

"What's up, Ruel? Miss me already?" she jokes. "Not that I'm complaining. Swabbing f***ing sucks." As they collect the others, she asks: "How are the ballistas? They look fun."

"Let me and Vorya watch him for bit before you," she clearly indicates Talivar and Talia here, "Start flashing your spells around. He'll be too on edge if you guys go at him first."

First Mate Driara seems impressed with Talivar's knowledge of the soldiering profession. She's also happy to spend time with him as they devise drills for the crew.

While she goes along with most of his suggestions, she does say, "We should forgo using the ballistae for the sea monster attack drill. The master gunner, Thrim, will not be happy if we waste any of his ammunition. Can't say I blame him. We can't exactly restock easily while we're out at sea."

Most of the crew seem quite energetic about Talivar's drills. The challenges seem a bit daunting for some, but the sorcerer's speech is enough to spur the crew to action.

-----

The female elf and male dwarf nod at Uruelleth's words. They both agree to keep an eye out for Ragnar or anyone else acting the same way.

-----

While Kilarra doesn't catch the dwarf rehearsing a speech or something similarly unusual, she does note that he seems to be uncomfortable wherever he goes. Part of it seems to be the dirty looks he gets from other crew members, but part of it is also that he seems immensely unhappy for some reason.

When Kilarra confronts Ragnar, he looks aghast at her words. "Sh** myself? I beg your pardon, miss. That sort of talk isn't very becoming of someone in the position you're in.

"If you must know, I've been better, but I'm doing just fine, thank you very much. Now be off, I'm sure you can find more interesting crew members to pester."

Kilarra, you know that Ragnar is lying. He isn't 'just fine.' He's actually quite unhappy and it's obvious to you. His desire for you to leave also seems to be due to him trying to hide something from you. What, exactly, will require more investigation.

"Just fine?" Kilarra asks Ragnar with an amused smirk. "Oh, Ragnar, if only you were a better liar. I'm pretty good at it myself, but you know what I've learned? There's always someone better at it than you. You can't bullsh** a bullshi**er. So we're going to play a little game. You tell me what you're trying to hide from me, and I won't force you to. It'll be much more pleasant this way. Trust me."

Despite that Kilarra looks at him and 'smiles' she's clearly not being kind.

If he still doesn't tell her what's going on, then she'll shrug and smirk. "Force it is then. Have you ever had an enchanter dig through your mind for answers? All kinds of things can come to light..."

If he still doesn't spill the beans she'll hand him off to Talivar or Talia, whoever wants to use detect magic and stuff on him.

I'll reply to Kilarra's actions during the war games when this Ragnar business is dealt with. I assume it takes priority over war games.

A little late, but Vorya strikes me as a man who could climb the rigging. Dexterous and all that. I bet the sight of the old man climbing the ropes is worth a laugh? Where do you want me to re-join back in?

Hope you get to feeling better soon! Rigger, got it. I'm assuming you would have been present for the confrontation with the dwarf, Captain, and First Mate, so feel free to contribute to that conversation. I'm assuming you would have been there for the group conversation about Ragnar and what the other dwarf and elf saw, so feel free to also contribute there. If you want to be there when Kilarra interrogates Ragnar, feel free to chime in there as well.

Vorya listens to what Uruelleth reveals about this strange dwarf. There was obviously something going on....

The older man tags along with Kilarra, wondering how she plans to interrogate the oddity. He winces at her (to him) overly direct approach. Actually suggesting magical mind manipulation was not the best way to win friends and influence people.

The older man drops, rather nimbly, out of the rigging next to Ragnar.

"Oh, leave him alone." he says dismissively to Kilarra, "He is obviously solid as stone. As for suggesting magical means....the nerve."

He turns to Ragnar, shaking his head, "Women." he says, in a world weary tone not entirely faked. "She sounds unhinged, making demands like that. Of someone like you, hand picked for this critical mission."

Also, I'd like to Detect Magic on the dwarf

Kilarra's SO into that.

She waits for Ragnar to reply before commenting:

"Pfft! Hand-picked, my a**. Slipped through the cracks, more like. Or maybe they just plain ran out of sailors crazy enough to make the trip... If he had the skills to make this trip he wouldn't be whining like a newborn babe."

Further rude comments coming pending his responses... Lol

I write in grief as it seems my refusals to use the assassins’ service have resulted in them making an example of one of my advisors. Lidellia did not deserve to die by an assassin’s blade. If I look at the situation objectively, I have to wonder why they killed Lidellia instead of me. She didn’t refuse their services. I did. For her sake, I will find out about the ones known as the Red Mantis. They will wish they had never approached me in the first place.

From the journal of Queen Telandia Edasseril of Kyonin
Dated the 14th of Abadius, 4710 AR

-----

Ragnar tries to look aghast at Kilarra’s accusations, but she sees through his lies. He isn’t very impressed with her efforts to negotiate, but is a bit more off-put by her intimidating smirk.

Before Ragnar can respond, he looks over at Vorya as the inquisitor speaks. The dwarf’s shoulders relax a bit at the man’s words. But then he tenses up again and backs up a few paces as Vorya casts Detect Magic.

“None of that! It’s bad enough being out at sea. I don’t want any of your witchery.”

Vorya doesn’t detect any magic on the dwarf.

When Kilarra speaks again, Ragnar’s face goes red and he says, “I’m not complaining for nothing, miss. I’ve just about had it with you and everyone else onboard. If another ship passes by, I might just book voyage back to Port Peril. Some of the pirates there are probably better company than you two.

“It’s not like this mess is my fault. I was just doing what sh… I mean, what I thought was best under the circumstances. It was the situation’s fault, not mine. Things are bad enough on this ship without you two pestering me all day.”

-----

Meanwhile, as the rest of the group await Kilarra and Vorya’s return, Jimell calls down from the crow’s nest.
“Hey-o! Talia! Come up here. As my fellow lookout buddy, we’ve got things to discuss!”

After Talia climbs up to the crow’s nest (or after she refuses and Jimell climbs down to her), the man says, “Now see here, my friend. There are lots of ins and outs of being the person designated to the crow’s nest. It’s a big responsibility, you see. As lookout, your job mostly involves, well, looking out. As one of them Aasimar folk, I’m sure you’ll be better at it than me in no time, but don’t get cocky. Looking out takes practice and it takes time to develop skills like mine. Speaking of which, where’d you get all your skills, if you don’t mind me asking? Curious minds, er, a curious mind wants to know.”

-----

Meanwhile, Makori walks out from the Captain’s quarters where she was reviewing the ship’s course and motions toward Talivar, indicating she wants him to join her.

Once he does (or he refuses and she brings the chart out to him), she brings him over to one of the ship’s charts and says, “We’re making pretty good time, but I want to make sure you know our course in the event something happens.”

Makori waits for Talivar’s response before saying, “Mind you, I don’t expect anything to happen, but on a mission like this and with a crew as diverse as ours, I’d rather not take any chances. You aren’t paying me to almost get you to Ilizmagorti. So here’s the deal…”

The navigator proceeds to go over the ship’s course and its approach to Ilizmagorti’s harbor.

-----

Before Uruelleth can stand alone for long, Thrim whistles the elf over and says, “I’ve been thinking. Jimell has a second now and so does Makori. It only makes sense for me to have one as well. So what do you say? Care to be my lieutenant?”

Talivar didn't really know what to make of Makori, he couldn't begin to fathom the things that motivated her. Still the charts were important so of course he went.

Talivar sighed, "I'm sure the monarchs thought it a grand idea but it feels like this crew has just been thrown together without second thought. They lack discipline, out here that could be fatal."

He listens carefully to Makori and with the aid of the charts, Talivar studies the proposed course and comes to his own opinion.

Talia decides its worth getting on with the crew, so heads up to Jimell, climbing up in the crows nest and looking out across the sea.

"Relax Jimell, I'm sure your eyesight is better than mine, I'll leave all the cocky remarks to you so long, as we are up here" Talia remarks casually, initially making light of his question, before turning, giving him an innocent smile. "I'm not sure what you mean by skills, I'm just here on this ship for my sharp eyes and pretty face if those curious minds wanted to know."

Vorya, pretty much any spell not modified by a feat or another spell will have some sort of visual and/or verbal component, so it's something to consider.

"You're not kidding," Makori says to Talivar. "I could have put together a better crew from the grimiest part of Port Peril. Still, I have to give you people some credit for your willingness to go on such a suicidal mission. Not something you see everyday.

"What convinced you to join this mission anyway?"

Makori almost seems surprised with herself at asking the question. Or at least as surprised as her face ever looks. It's normally occupied by a blank expression.

Talivar examines the charts and sees that the ship is still on the same course as before. It's still not the most direct course, but is still the safest.

-----

Jimell smiles at Talia and says, "Oh I'm pretty sure there's more to you than sharp eyes and a pretty face. You forget I fought the demons of the Worldwound. You tend to notice people with skill. And you, my dear, are a person of skill.

"But I don't take it personally if you don't wish to divulge your particular skill set. I've worked with plenty of secretive individuals over the years. Of course, any information you want to divulge, I wouldn't mind."

Jimell continues to smile and his facial expression implies that he would very much like more information about Talia and her 'skills.'

-----

Ragnar looks offended by Kilarra's question. "She? What did I ever say about a she? I started to say something about what should happen, but decided to rephrase it. There's no 'she' involved."

He's still clearly lying.

The dwarf relaxes a bit again at Vorya's words. "Curiosity doesn't mean I want to actually see it, especially when it's directed at me."

Ragnar looks back and forth between Kilarra and Vorya as the two make a show of arguing.

Ragnar Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

"Now see here, there's no need for violence. She... she came to me the night before we left Port Peril. I didn't see her face. I only heard her voice. It was clearly feminine, but she seemed to be augmenting it in some way so I couldn't identify her later."

The dwarf glances nervously between Kilarra and Vorya again, trying gauge their responses.

"She somehow knew my family's been hurting for money. She offered me a substantial sum to stir up conflict on the ship. She didn't say why and I didn't ask since she offered half the funds up front. Even if she never paid me again half was already more than I earn in a year's service to the High King."

The dwarf clasps and unclasps his hands before saying, "Besides monetary motivation, she also threatened... repercussions... should I refuse or fail to stir up trouble. That's why I waited a couple days. I wanted to make sure it worked. But then you lot showed up and calmed things, so I don't know what I'm going to do now."

Kilarra looks very serious the entire time Ragnar speaks, like she's picking apart and assessing his every word. Which she is.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 1 = 17

"You took money for a death sentence, Ragnar, you fool. Conflict on this ship, in these waters, means death for all of us. These repercussions... They had better be good. What did she threaten you with?"

"And this woman? We're not just voices and faces, you know. How tall was she? Was she wearing a mask? Armed or unarmed? Where did she approach you? Where had you been earlier that day?"

"What you're going to do?" Kilarra smiles cruelly. "You're going to stop trying to cause trouble or I'm going to have you keelhauled. After that..." Kilarra lets her words trail off ominously, and makes a show of looking at Vorya for his opinion, with one eyebrow raised.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 1 = 13

Talia smiles apologetically at the man.I'm not actually trying to be secretive here, I just don't consider myself to be extremely skilful. I'm a decent enough researcher but I don't really consider that a skill. I guess, if pressed, I have a knack for staying alive but I put that down to being perceptive at the right time, and using whatever obscure knowledge I might have picked up, the correct way. That's really all there is to it."

Vorya takes this in with increasing dread. Someone had already got members of the crew. This plot with Ragnar was rather clumsy and easily diffused but it raised the question....who else?

Still playing along, Vorya takes half a step between Kilarra and Ragnar, "Easy there, he is telling you what you want to hear. No need to start getting violent against a man in such a tight place."

The older man turns to the dwarf, 'Sounds like that lady tried to pinch you between the tunnel and the stone, my friend. Offered money, late night threats from behind masks...nasty stuff. Makes my skin crawl."

Shaking his head sadly he adds, "Still, at least you know know she can't be trusted." Obviously the dwarf hadn't said any such thing, but Vorya knew how to lead someone in conversation.

"People who show up with no names or faces and spending money like water can't even be trusted to uphold a deal. The fact you are telling this to us shows you are wiser then she took you for. This is good."

Silently he ponders if they should involve the rest of the crew. Who knows how deep this rot went....Maybe they should keep it between themselves, and merely keep eyes open.

'We can protect you and your family. At least, we have connections with those who can. This isn't just any mission. We have powerful friends and allies."

Looking up from the charts, Talivar stares into the middle distance, it had been almost three years since he lost Maria and it still hurt just as bad as the first day. And as for loosing Alayna that was almost more then he could bear. Realizing the silence was growing uncomfortable Talivar bit his tongue hard enough to draw blood before shaking himself out of the funk. With a reigned expression he replied, "All of us are damaged one way or another. Voyra and Killara have dark pasts and did things they either won't talk about or talk too much about. Something terrible happened to Uruelleth and Talia, but I haven't had the heart to find out what. As for myself until a few years ago I lived in blissful ignorance. I. We where happy but then in front of my eyes one who smirks like Killara cut down my wife Maria and stole my daughter." He glanced sadly into her eyes, "My heart froze that day, and death when it comes will be a blessed relief. Yet I can't rest knowing my little Alayna, the light of our lives, languishes a plaything in the Silvamilk."

Subconsciously Talivar's hands had become fists, encrusted deeply with frost.
