After several long weeks of renovating and redecorating, you have all managed to make The Spirit Gallery functional again. Even though most of you have only come together recently, the hard work has bonded you closely together. Maybe even enough for you to be friends.

Regardless--Today is the big day. The grand re-opening. New employees rush about in excitement; Those who worked for Cedany's father and have been rehired go about with a smile, taking in the newly painted walls and carefully cleaned carpets.

The customers stream in, several heading to the game room, others watching in fascination as Drad Belel--your four-armed half-orc bartender--mixes their drinks. Old friends sit together and remember other days. A young halfling couple stare giddily at each other while sharing a sweetroll. Dwarves bravely test out your strongest alcohol. The entire atmosphere is charged with happiness and excitement, and you are at the center of it all.

Going to give you guys a chance to interact and roleplay a bit.

Tirkala stretched and yawned as she walked into the main room of the inn. She smiled as she saw the customers, giving a nod to Drad to say hello.

Today would be a good day to stretch out in a nice pile of gold. But, business time! Who do we have to chat with first?

"Drad, how's business been today?"

I'll give a chance for the others to get in here first. See how they are...

Maeltheron wakes early on the grand re-opening. The first thing he checks on are the ladies. He knocks on each of the bedroom doors housing the prostitutes. when they wearily poke their heads into the corridor, he addresses them as a group with a broad smile.

Up an at 'em ladies. I know it's early, but I need all of you put together in your finest and looking the part for this special day. After you have prepared yourself, please report to the office off of the Gameroom for instructions and assignments for the day.

I am assuming 5 ladies of the night. Please correct me if I am wrong.I will come up with names for each soon. Also, Can I assume that one of the offices is off of the Gameroom, with a one way mirror, or peephole of sorts for viewing the floor?

He turns on his heel and heads to the mainroom for a meal.

Well, good morning Tirkala. Drad, good to see ya.

He walks behind the bar, and pours a cup of water for himself.

Well, Tirkala, what are your plans for this fantastic day? I will be attending the ladies and the gameroom from the backoffice most of the day. I must tell you that the ladies are excited and are preparing themselves as we speak.

Osk enters from the back of the inn having just completed a walkthrough. He had not yet seen Cedany, which did not concern the oread but he also had not seen the halfling....which Osk still wasnt sure was an issue or not.

Drinks flowing, patrons enjoying themselves Osk figured he had a few minutes before needing to move on. Seeing Maeltheron he gestured to the elf to come talk to him when he was done. Settling on a barstool Osk asks for a dark heavy stout to start the morning.

Maeltheron awaits a response from Tirkala. After a moment, he saunters down the bar to the other end where Osk sits.

He big fella, top of the morning to ya. Ready to keep watch over things today? By the early flow of newcomers, it looks like you may have a busy one. Where's Lucky? I was hoping to have him help me out back in the Gameroom today.

Osk barely moves from his perch, We still havent formalized the security arrangements outside of hiring, I think we need more structure...I want minimal trouble fromthe games. More money tends to spike the rate.of stupid.moves by desperate people. Osk sips his stout then turns to the elf, Lucky hasnt shown up yet... The oread simply cocks his eyebrow, a strange look on his stony features.

Things are finally squared away on my end. Sorry for the delay.

Tirkala stretched and mmmed, having actually fallen asleep for a moment. Then, she waved to Maeltheron.

Heya! I didn't hear you approach. Sorry about that! Planning to keep an eye on customers. Talk a tiny bit."

She then waved hello to Osk.

"How're you today?"

She chose that moment to wander over, blinking as she heard that bit about security.

"I hope none of them get rowdy out here. I would hate to flash them. One gesture and the sheer power of what they saw leaves them barely able to see."

Bluff check to act innocent: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

Tirkala does her absolute best to look innocent of any nonmagical implications of her statement.

"Hopefully that would be enough to get their attention. I'm not certain..."

Osk offers a grunt that sounds like gravel mixing. Just make sure I have a chance to look away so I can grab them when you do your thing. The brawler continues to drink straight faced.

The Exchange

Male Kelshite Millrite of Sarenrae

An hour before dawn Martin wakes up. He spends the first hour polishing his already spotless breastplate and tower shield until they almost seem to gleam on their own in the dawn light. As the sun crests over the Precipice district, or what was, Martin is seen with glassteel scimitar in salute before The Dawnbringer, the sunlight flairs brightly off the towershield leant against the colored glass statue. He continues his dance for the remainder of the hour. As he is dancing filly armed and armored for battle, the guards and laborers show up for the day shift. A series of small rowboats shows up at the lone sturdy pier which the laborers unload crude crates packed full of small bundles.

Martin finishes the dance just as everything is loaded into the wagons and carts, looking around he notes that everything is working, so far, like clockworks.

Martin sheaths his blade, bowing to the Statue he picks up his tower shield and jumps up into the wagon, taking the reins into his own hands.

Addressing the crew are remaining on the docks."There is one grain boat coming in on the mid-morning tide, once that is offloaded and been milled into flour the remainder of the day is yours."

To the team of guards and two teams of laborers who are following to the Inn. with the other carts."You laborers, half of you will be staying at the inn, working out of the room that they have set aside for me to maintain the place. Guards - we are going to try and focus most of our sales in the Ivy District so that we are close to them, and you have less of an area to walk on patrol. both teams of laborers, once you get all these carts and wagon back here as well as Beuda our trusty camel back and the grounds clean, your both off for the day."

----------------
Martin arrives about ten am with a handful of carts and a wagon full of this crates. Straight away he brings them inside and stacks them in one of the storages that are empty, near the kitchen. One large cask they move with trouble into the workshop. Martin brings two bags with him and dismisses the crew to return everything to the mill pier.

Martin warms the small sacks near the oven for about ten minutes, turning them every so often. When he thinks they are done he sets them on one of the counters and unwraps them.

The first is some flat bread, the kind he hasn't had in almost a year. The second is a type of spicy white cheese mixed with chocolate shavings and raspberry preserves all inside of a thick bread bowl.

"Dig in, I got a great deal on the flat breads, this concoction in the bowl is something I found at a little kitchen in the puddle that goes really good with it. Maybe you cooks can come up with something using these supplies. If you need more just let me know.

Have to leave for a bit, cant join in with the others yet. will when return home, I'll be hanging out in the kitchen until then chatting it up with the cooks, maybe flirting a tad bit as well, but harmlessly they are staff and you don't &&&& with crew. :)

You could have a balcony type thing looking over the game room at no cost. If you wanted the viewing to be secret, you would need to pay for a confessional, which is 100 gp.

Scarab Sages

Drad nods to Tirkala and Maeltheron in turn, giving each a toothy smile.

One of the cooks sniffs suspiciously at the strange cheese, not sure whether it will taste any good. Another is braver than the first and quickly pops a large chunk in his mouth, grunting appreciatively at the mix of flavors. The others come over to give the food a try as they have time, although they are mostly kept busy filling customer orders.

The morning passes quickly, followed by an even larger influx of hungry folk during the lunch rush. But soon after that things settle down to a non-frantic pace. The only patrons currently in the bar are an elf and a gnome arguing animatedly in the far corner, and the well muscled dwarf who has been here since opening and seems to be now getting a bit tipsy.

[Ooc]Feel free to keep roleplaying through the morning as much as you wish. I will post again later when I have access to all my notes.

Tirkala nodded and grinned. "No worries! I'll wave at you and point to my eyes before I unleash it."

Here's hoping I don't have to unleash it...

Harrison would start to rise slowly that day, knowing full well that good things tended to come to those that wait. However, that simple thought changed quickly for him when it occurred to him what day it was. That's right, it was the grand opening of the inn and no other thought could have made such a small Halfling jump so quickly out of bed to send a solid thud resounding up through the floor boards to those sitting at the bar.

While rubbing his head, Harrison smiles to himself as he quickly goes about getting ready for the day. The sound of many footsteps would not quicken his pace. It was important to look presentable on this day of all days. So like a cat preening its fur, he would take his time choosing his outfit as he slips his magical sleeves on and off again.

Had unexpected guests around last night and didn't get onto the computer, feel like I'm late to my own party... ;-)

Cedany dashes around through the morning and lunchtime rush, trying to ensure everything runs well on their opening, flitting between checking on the cooks, serving drinks and checking on the staff. She feels comfortable being back inside the confines of a familiar building, running smoothly - in close enough confines that her eyesight doesn't bother her.

She tries to catch the eye of each of her partners as she notes them, Maeltheron's occupied with the entertainment, is Tirkala flirting with Osk? hmm... Seen Martin in the kitchen, with some interesting food. Where's Harrison?

Scarab Sages

Was waiting for Harrison to post before moving on. Somehow missed that he was already here.

Later in the afternoon, but before the common man has finished his work, Atona--The young girl who runs your front desk and signs in those who wish to spend the night--runs up to Cedany, breathing heavily and rather flustered.
Miss Cedany... There is a man here who demands to see you. He is very angry... He told me--
The rest of what she had to say is cut off as she bursts into tears, thoroughly upset.

I love the notion that Harrison might miss some portion of the day being too caught up in taking on and off his clothes in the quest to look "just right"

Looking around Osk notes the arrival of Cedany and then the sudden hysteria of Atona. Osk puts back his drink and stands his eyes narrowing as he turns towards where Atona came from moving to see if he can tell who this mysterious "angry" patron is...

I was trying to give others a chance to continue on with their conversations before I had him come out and make his appearance, but since we're moving on, he'll have slipped out of his hidden room at some point throughout the day bedecked in fine apparel and jewels. Later into the night, he'll disappear to reappear at some point in what appears to be worn adventuring clothing. All the better to make his tales of daring seem more realistic.

As the scene starts to unfold, Harrison can be found at the bar recounting heroic tales of his and Osk's past to amuse some of their current patrons.

Sitting on a bar stool, he takes hold of one of his legs and starts leaning backwards to an angle that makes him appear ready to fall out of his seat. "And there I was being held upside down with my poor little leg in the grasp of a giant among giants, when out of no where Osk's appears out of no where to give the big brute the good ol' one two," he accentuates this by rolling forward in his seat and giving two quick jabs towards the nearest patron, before offering a wink and continuing on to say, "Right in the family jewels if you get my drift."

Then, noticing Osk's from the corner of his eyes, he moves to stand atop his bar stool before offering his audience a bow. "Ladies and gentlemen, you have been a wonderful crowd, but please forgive me as I must take my leave for the time being or the ol' dragon will have my neck for not working."

With that said, he would back flip off the chair and give a quick "tada" like stance before making his way through the crowd after Osk. He had no intention of stepping in less necessary. He trusted the big guy's judgement, but he knew that it did not hurt to have a little back up close by.

Tirkala muttered a quick curse beneath her breath in Draconic at the hearing of the angry patron, then turned to Cedany.

She silently followed Osk out, but kept her distance, just watching the scene for the moment and not interfering with Osk and Cedany handling it, unless Cedany asked her to step in.

It seems the day is already starting to get interesting...

This is certainly a situation where I imagine Osk's "big brother" mentality with Cedany would have him go check before going to her. It may very well get him in trouble depending on how things play but I guess we will see :p

Scarab Sages

Going to give Cedany a chance to react before moving on. Diplomacy is somewhat dependent on timing, else I would move on and let her fill in if she had anything important to do.

Maeltheron, lounges in the back-office off the Gameroom, with his feet up on the desk, looking at ledgers of the days gaming takes.

I will need a report from Miriam soon to determine what the days receipts have been for the whoring. She needs to settle up with me before the nights festivities begin.

Maeltheron stands and walks out of the office, glancing down upon the gaming floor, which was getting busier by the moment. he turns, locks the office door and makes his way down the stairs, through the hallway and out towards the main room of the Spirit Gallery.

Where the hell is that damn halfling at? He is supposed to be lending a hand with the Gameroom.

As Maeltheron steps into the main area, he notices Cedany in deep conversation with an agitated customer. A quick glance shows him that Miriam is at her usual table talking to Sally and a potential client.

He approaches the ever-watchful Osk.

What gives with the customer, big fella?

Sensing that he is gathering a following as Mael walks up to him the oread continues his measured approached to Atona's desk. Osk merely grunts but pops his left index finger with his thumb, the sound of which sounds like a rock careening off stone which the elf would know roughly translates to "trouble".

Sensitive that an outburst might cause trouble Osk motions to the halfling following behind him with a talking hand motion and then a side to side hand motion hoping that the talkative Harrison understands that he might need some aural interference in the taproom if this angry customer doesn't play nice.

I'm keen on the notion of Osk not talking much but the others having a good sense these days of what all his sounds/motions mean. Let me know if I take that too far.

Seeing Osk's signals, Harrison would quickly make his way into the tap room where he would pull a waitress off to the side. Motioning for her to lean over, he would quietly explain to her what he wanted her to do.

Atona nods numbly in response to Cedany, and moves over to the bar where Drad is already mixing something for her.

In the front reception area there is a well-dressed halfling, impatiently tapping his foot. He is flanked by two burly members of the Starwatch--An elf and a human.

Osk:
You can tell that the guardsmen are here only as a formality. They don't expect to do anything, and are seem rather bored.

Seeing the group enter, the halfling stops muttering to himself and glares at you. Are you the proprietors of this place? He sneers off the question, his tone a mixture of arrogance and frustration due to his wasted time.

Cedany:
You recall something from your childhood. Vague memories of this halfling and your father shouting at each other, although you can't remember why.

Sensing that Cedany is close at hand Osk will casually shake his head and then prop on the wall next to the door while he jerks a thumb at the oracle making her way to the room. Osk intentionally doesn't mention the elf's position. Mael can play it his own way I figure depending on his mood he can be good cop or bad cop, heh.

Turning towards Cedany, the halfling's eyes gleam in recognition. He spits in your direction. Ah, the little runt's all grown up now. Still running around and getting in the way of the adults.
He spits again, then pulls a rolled up paper out of his sleeve and looks over it, giving the document the same angry glare he gave you. Your father was always late paying his taxes; always trying to weasel his way out of them, and it looks like you're following in the old man's grimy footsteps. When I heard that The Spirit Gallery was reopening, I just had to check the records--Not only have you not filled out the proper registration for a business establishment, but you also owe five hundred gold crowns to the city from your father's unpaid dues
He smiles maliciously up at you again, as though he has just won some great personal victory by bringing you this news.

Do I know whether the unpleasant little halfling is correct in his 'records'?
"I fear I don't know what you're talking about, no-one has made me aware of any debts I've inherited, if you can leave the paperwork with me and I'll have someone look them over." Cedany's smile doesn't falter.

Scarab Sages

At Maeltheron's words (With Harrison's help; spell is used up) the halfling takes an involuntary step back, stumbling slightly. Regaining his balance, he also tries to regain his dignity, but fear still shows in his eyes.
At the same time the two guardsmen step forward. One with hands on his weapons, the other reaching towards his horn in preparation to summon help if fighting breaks out.

Seeing the guards act brings back some of the halfling's confidence, and he sniffs disdainfully as he pulls out a second paper and hands it to Cedany. All of the information is there. I will be back tomorrow to collect your fees. His eyes shift to Maeltheron, And keep your guard dog away; it would be a shame to have to charge your employees--And therefore you--with assault. He then turns and walks hurriedly out the door.

Cedany:
Most of that was supposed to be taken care of by your team of bureaucrats. It is possible, but unlikely, that they missed anything.

The guards watch you all for a moment longer, then relax and prepare to leave as well. The half-orc shoves Maeltheron back a step before following the elf out. Cool it, Bub. I don't like Kealdwar any more than you do--but threats of violence are not tolerated. Play nicer next time.

Harrison would let out a snicker as he sees the group disperse. If nothing else, at least it had provided him with a bit of amusement in the end.

Finally, he would turn his attention back to the waitress he had pulled aside to help assist him in his performance had things turned ugly. "Thank you my dear for your time, however it seems that our little performance is unnecessary. None the less, I cherish our time together and hope that you will forgive me from pulling you away from your work." While he spoke, Harrison would slide a gold coin from his purse and slide it into her hand as he raises it up to plant a gentle kiss upon it. Then, with a quick slap to her rump, he sends her on her way before quietly sauntering back into the crowd in an attempt to elude Maeltheron just a bit longer.

Tirkala frowned as she watched the short man.

Had to bring guards with him... it seems he is only brave when he has muscle to back him.

She then frowned at what he said and tried to get an idea of if he was lying.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 10

Then, at last, she sighed. Either way, this was not good. She waited until he and the guards were gone.

"I vote that, the next time he comes here, we distract the guards, grab him, stuff him in a crate, and put him on a ship. I think taxes won't be the last thing we hear from him."

She then hmmed a bit. "Mael, while you're at it, find out if it's legit for him to collect taxes?"

Then, she looked to Cedany. "Need any help going over the records? Two sets of eyes might work better!"

Still, though, I am going to do a little digging on the underside of things. No worries, I will not ruffle any feathers.

Maeltheron slips out for a couple of hours before things get busy to stop by a few well-favored taverns in the Ivy District and the Coins, asking about the the character of Kealdwar and his official duties. he will limit his questions to those he knows in these districts that are both within Spheres of Influence. He will not bring up the specifics of Kealdwar's accusations about the Spirit Gallery.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Osk shifts as everyone scatters but can't quite contain shaking his head at the elf as he leaves. As Cedany moves to check in with the office Osk gently taps her, I believe have someone I can as at the Ivy council if your papers seem right.

With Maeltheron leaving the inn Osk decides it is time to check in with the other staff to see if anything else of note is going on.

Tirkala turns to follow Cedany up to the office, intending to help her search., waving to the others as she heads up.

"Do you think your father left any other records related to that hateful little man? Those may also give us an idea of why he had an immovable rod sovereign glued in his rear."

Scarab Sages

Opening the office door, Cedany finds three of the bureaucrats working, the other two having the day off.
One stands up. Her voice is pleasant as she greets you. Good afternoon Miss Cedany, Miss Tirkala. Is there something we can do for you?

Maeltheron:
Sertan Kealdwar is universally known and universally disliked by everyone who owns any kind business. He is Absalom's chief tax collector for profitable organizations, and seems to find sadistic joy in making the lives of their owners miserable by finding every individual thing that might be wrong with their establishment and fining them for it (many suspect that he takes a large portion of this into his own pocket, as he is uncommonly wealthy and no other explanation has been found for his nitpicking--but there is no evidence to support this).
Most of his accusations arise from technicalities in the law, and his fines can often be bypassed if you have a good lawyer. Sertan takes losing as a personal insult, however, and will work all the harder to rid you of your money and bog you down with red tape until the time when he gets it.

"I've just had a run in with a halfling named Kealdwar, who appears to be operating with some authority. He says we've not filled out proper registration and that my father owed five hundred crowns. I've got the documents here."

Maeltheron waorks his way back to the Spirit gallery with the news that he has discoveredon his short information gathering mission. He heads directly upstairs to the main office to talk to the office staff, Cedany and Tirkala. On the way he motions for any of the other proprieters to join him upstairs.

Osk, I have some dirt on the halfling, please join me with any of the others you can gather in the main office.

Maeltheorn takes the steps two at a time, and he enters the door. he gives a head nod to Cedany and Tirkala.

I have some news about our tax collecting halfling. I have asked the others to attend. When they have arrived I will share what I have discovered.

After checking outside of the open door, and waiting a few minutes for others to join that may, Maeltheron, paces the room with his hands behind his back as he relays what he found out at the bars.

Most of his accusations arise from technicalities in the law, and his fines can often be bypassed if you have a good lawyer. Sertan takes losing as a personal insult, however, and will work all the harder to rid you of your money and bog you down with red tape until the time when he gets it. So, we need a contact, loophole, or a good attorney to by-pass these claims, if they are indeed false. of course, if you would like, there are other means to deal with this little pest, that my associates would be glad to address outside of the public eye.

Harrison could be found leaning in the doorway, having slipped in shortly after Osk, with that seemed to border between contemplation and boredom as he takes in the information Maeltheron had found. However, he quickly changes back to his seemingly care free demeanor as Maeltheron explains that they simply needed some way to counteract the other Halflings attempts at taxing them unfairly. Hardly waiting for Maeltheron to finish, Harrison walks up to Cedany and asks in a jovial tone, "Could I perchance see the documents young miss? I would like to examine them a bit closer."

Does our little office here by chance have a magnifying glass?

"Help yourself."
assuming she's had chance to read it through, she'll hand over the document.

Harrison would take the documents from Cedany with a grateful, "Thank you~" before moving to one of the currently unoccupied desks and setting up shop so to speak. First of all, he would take his time in reading over the document and recalling any legal information that might be helpful in dealing with the current issue at hand.

I'm not fully sure which Knowledge check you might want for this, I'm assuming Local, but please apply this to whichever one you find most appropriate since his bonus is the same across the board. Since this is an important subject, he'll use his one of his daily uses of Adaptible Luck to apply a +3 to his normal +9. On top of this, he'll use his daily use of Lore Master to take a 20 on the roll for a total of 32 on the check.

Knowledge Check: 32 = 32

Once done, he would start tapping a gentle rythem with his feet upon one of the support beams that ran between two of the stool legs as he examines the document closer to see if it might be a forgery.

If there is a magnifying glass around, he will use it to take a closer look at the document as he does so. If this would apply a circumstancial bonus, please add it to the following roll. He will use another use of his Adaptable Luck for a +3 to the roll as well.

Linguistics Check to detect a Forgery: 1d20 + 7 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 3 = 30

Wow...just wow...

Tirkala spoke up after Cedany did.

"After that, do we have any other records related to that man? He has a history with this place and I want to know how much of it is personal and how much is just him needing a stick removed."

And then she blinks as Mael returns and relays what he heard. Then she frowned deeply.

"The more I hear about him, the more I think we should go with the shipping crate idea. Maybe pick a ship headed for Osirion."

She then looked to Cedany, waiting on her decision.

To establish, I'm basing the comment that Kealdwar has a history with the Spirit Gallery based on Kealdwar's comment that Cedany's father was late on taxes.

Scarab Sages

Going to skip the early conversation with the bureaucrats, as it has become irrelevant. They would have started looking over the paperwork for things, but Harrison was much quicker.

Looking at the documents, Cedany is reminded that she doesn't know anything about laws.

Harrison has much better luck (pun intended). And after a single time reading through the few pages he is certain of several things.

Harrison:
There is no forgery, although there are not the proper seals that order payment--but you know those are not particularly difficult to gain. Kealdwar probably just didn't want to waste time getting them and hoped you would fork over the money without looking too closely. It would take the halfling another day or so to retrieve those signatures and stamps, so you could buy more time than the day he gave you. That won't be necessary however, as you also notice that one particular section of law has been ignored. Bringing it up will void the fine for supposedly not having proper registration.
You are also fairly sure that the 500 gold debt can be worked around as well, although it will take your bureaucrats an hour or so to double check records before you can be certain.

Harrison, Maeltheron, Osk, Tirkala:
If Sertan Kealdwar were to go missing (because Maeltheron offed him, or for any other reason) there would be an investigation into Maeltheron because of his previous threat. Such doesn't mean that he will be convicted--Evidence is still required for that. But it might uncover some of his secrets, and it would definitely be bad for business.

Maeltheron smiles at the words of Tirkala.

I like this one...we are often of a like mind.

Indeed, Tirkala, that would be an option worth considering, but I would need an ironclad alibi based upon my previous threat. What if we made things uncomfortable for Sertan? I am not beyond bribery. We just need to find him in a compromising situation, which we could certainly arrange. Lucky, you find anything to help us in those documents, yet?

Harrison would give an over exaggerated, "AHA!" before calming himself and turning to the others with a wide smile on his face.

"No worries my friends. I think I have a solution to our troubles, but I need to borrow our friends here," as he speaks of friends, he motions towards their bureaucrats, "to check over what I have found. Once I know I have my facts straight, I'll gladly fill you in on everything. Until then, let me assure you that these particular documents are missing some seals and even if our good friend Kealdwar comes to collect tomorrow, I can send him away for a day at least to collect the appropriate markings to make these parchments legal. Until then, he has no right to enforce them."

Then, nodding his head to Osk, he continues on to say, "So Osk if you would do me a favor and make sure we are not disturbed for a bit I would greatly appreciate it. This in turn will free up the rest of you to make sure everything continues to run smoothly on our grand opening."

Finally, he turns to the bureaucrats and starts informing them of his findings so that they can help him double check everything, but not before turning to the group once more and chiming in with a joking tone, "Oh and some matters, even when spoken about in jest, should be discussed in private." As he spoke these words, he would throw a serious look towards Osk that said the conversation needed to end.

Bluff Check to throw off any suspicion that there had been any honest truth in talking about knocking off Kealdar. Will use a round of Archaeologist's Luck to up the check.
