Layaali Twice-Born |

Layaali moves slightly into the corner, and focuses her mind. "Hear my prayer, Vildeis. Please! Let them not go unprotected!"
Channeling energy. It will hit Uzma, Korum and myself, and narrowly miss the ooze.
Healing: 1d6 ⇒ 4
That leaves Uzma with only three wounds and Korum with two wounds.
Seeing the wounds upon both of her companions within her sight heal much better than before, she smiles and prays softly. "Thank-you for your sacrifice. Praise the Cardinal Martyr!"

Drael Kapernos |

Looking at where the blob moved to on the map, that sets off my readied action.
As the ooze attempts to engulf Korum, Drael does his best to hack it apart.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

![]() |

Yes, sorry, Drael. I had meant to mention that your readied attack was now ready to take.
The ranger and the bloodrager's weapons swings slice through air as the oracle calls upon the mercy of her god once more.
All you, Korum!

Korum Scratcher |

Korum grunts at the bludgeoning blow of the fetid ooze against his body, recoiling and bringing his axe down once more to cleave the creature, before stepping back in tactical retreat.
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Damage: 1d12 ⇒ 10
5' step after the attack

![]() |

The half-orc cleanly chops through a large mound of the ooze, green goo spraying everywhere.
Korum, as you're on steps, you cannot take a 5 foot step - it's difficult terrain. I'll keep you where you are on the map for now.
Round 3!
FYI: Because Layaali moved further away, both Uzma and Razif will be affected by low-light conditions. That means you both have a 20% miss (concealment) chance in combat.
Drael, your readied action last round moved you in the Initiative Order.
The druid, who has been murmuring to Gozreh for aid since last round, opens his eyes again. A small dog materialises adjacent to the monstrous blob, growling its intent.
"Thank you, Gozreh," Uzma murmurs peacefully. He then steps back into the fray, swinging down his quarterstaff with a beatific look on his face.
Uzma transferred remaining 1st level spell to Summon Nature's Ally I
Uzma attack, 20% Concealment: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 61d6 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 01d100 ⇒ 49 MISS!
Dog attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 91d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 HIT!
The druid misses, but the small dog savagely tears a chunk out of the blob. The blob, in turn, directs its attention to the animal.
Melee Attack on Dog: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 181d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 HIT!
Dog Reflex Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 121d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
The green goo shoots out a large pseudopod, engulfing the poor dog completely. The dog struggles underneath the semi-translucent blob for a second, then ceases its actions, suffocated by the goo. It then poofs out of existence the next round.
Drael, you may act!

Drael Kapernos |

Drael swings again at the creature, but is distracted by the sight of the struggling dog and his strike flies wide.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

![]() |

You assume too soon, Drael, that you missed.
The suli indeed swings widely and cleanly into the green blob. With a heaving splat, the mass stops moving. The ranger suffers a further attack from his hideous blob, meanwhile.
Melee Attack on Razif: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 MISS!
Dodging and ducking, the ranger appears unscathed. Showered in fungal and plant ichor, but unscathed.
One down! Razif, Korum, and Layaali may act!

Razif al-Akkuya |

Frustrated by his failed attacks and being drenched in goo, Razif tries another, hopefully more successful, attack with his scimitar.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
"They're coming from these drains, right? Is there some way we can block those?"

Layaali Twice-Born |

Worried over the companions she cannot see with her gilded vision, Layaali moves back towards them, unsure what she'll find.
Upon seeing Razif being assaulted by green goo, Layaali aims her still loaded crossbow at it and fires a bolt at the middle of its quivering form.
I had to go back quite a ways to see if I had put down my loaded crossbow, but I hadn't, so move action towards her friends, an standard to shoot at the goo fighting Razif.
Attack: 1d20 + 0 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 0 - 4 = 2 Includes penalty for firing into melee.
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Now THAT'S a miss, Drael! Haha.

![]() |

Razif, I'm ruling that you would've still been affected by low-light conditions on your attack because Layaali hadn't moved yet. Therefore, you're subject to a 20% concealment roll.
Concealment on Razif's Attack: 1d100 ⇒ 96 SUCCESSFUL ATTACK!
Layaali, the stairs that you're moving across act as difficult terrain, so I've adjusted your maximum movement on the map.
Despite attacking into the shadows, Razif's scimitar finds soft, pulpy plant matter to sink into, doing some damage to the quivering blob. A crossbow bolt flies into the ceiling from Layaali as she draws closer to the ranger.
No one is affected by low-light conditions at this point. Korum, it is your turn!

Korum Scratcher |

Korum brings the axe back up, trying to catch the ooze with the backswing as he grunts.
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Damage: 1d12 ⇒ 6

![]() |

You'll need to move to the ooze that's still living first, but I went ahead and did that for you on the map.
The wizard brings down his axe on the last remaining ooze, splattering both himself and Razif in green slime as the hideous vegetal mass quivers its last.
COMBAT ENDED!
It's at this point that Uzma's eyes roll back into his head and he passes out.

Razif al-Akkuya |

Sorry, forgot about the low light!
Razif takes a deep breath as the last goo spatters into little bits in front of him, courtesy of Korum.
"Thank you, Korum. That could've gone ugly without you. I do not like these green things, at all. Who knows if there's more hiding in the dr-"
Then, he notices Uzma fallen over.
"...Uzma? Guys, Uzma's down."
He then runs over to him, intent to move the unconscious druid towards the stairs, out of harm's way.

Layaali Twice-Born |

Layaali breathes a sigh of relief as the goo is destroyed. But, as Uzma falls to the ground she hurries over to his side in worry. She examines him, curious why he's unconscious. It's not from wounds, right?
Heal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

The oracle races to Uzma's side, cradling the druid's head in her lap as she calls to him. Uzma's face is caked with rapidly-drying vegetal goo and his eyes are wide open but stare straight ahead without moving. His body lies in a vegetative state.
Sorry - couldn't resist the pun!
Suddenly, Uzma gasps and his locked gaze moves to focus on Layaali's smile.
Uzma is back.

Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
Uzma looks up at Layaali with Gozreh's light in his eyes.
"I saw her," he whispers. "Our path is righteous and she guides our hand. I know now what we must do."
"Come!" he urges, rushing up the steps, and making his way into the open courtyard where he kneels and prays with fervour and zeal.

![]() |

Uzma races up the stairs from the underground plant laboratory.
Uzma, you can get to the open courtyard, but the overgrown brambles prevent you from entering much further than where you are on the map.

Layaali Twice-Born |

Layaali begins to probe Uzma's wounds, only to have him suddenly leap out of her lap and race off, up the stairs. Soon he's out of her sight.
Layaali stands and moves to follow him. "Where did he go?" she asks Razif.
Eventually she finds him at the tangled courtyard kneeling in the dirt.
"Uzma?" she asks, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Who did you see? How are you feeling?"

Razif al-Akkuya |

Razif sheathes his scimitar and hurries after Layaali.
"Are we sure he's alright? Maybe the goo got into his brain, made him hallucinate things or something?"

Layaali Twice-Born |

Layaali nods at Razif. "A wise observation. He's wounded, of course, and still recovering from recent poisonings and blood loss--as I am. There's also something growing in his skin near the wound he suffered from the ooze. I think he's affected by some kind of disease... Still, I'm not sure if it would cause hallucinations."

![]() |

Uzma kneels in fervent prayer in front of the tangled mess of vegetation sprouting from the central courtyard of the monastery. The sun's passage across the sky marks the day as two-thirds complete.

Razif al-Akkuya |

Razif's imagination goes wild, causing him to doubt his next course of action. Could it be he was spoken to by Sarenrae? Did she hint toward some sort of buried treasure?
He decides to play it safe though.
"You're gonna have to enlighten us first, Uzma. What are you digging for, who did you see?"

![]() |

Uzma tears into the tangled underbrush, pulling apart brambles and wild grasses with fervour as he makes his way towards the centre of the courtyard.
That's the first task before actually starting to dig.

Layaali Twice-Born |

Watching Uzma tear at the underbrush with his bare hands, Layaali looks uncertain. Eventually she draws her dagger.
"I'll help you, Uzma, but you must tell me what we are looking for. How else will I know when we've found it? Yes?" she coaxes soothingly.
As she begins to cut down the vines with her dagger she asks the following questions, giving time for him to answer in between each.
"Who told you to dig? What did they look like? Can you see them now? What are you searching for?"

Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
"This is the earth," he explains with his hands digging handfuls of earth. "That is the glorious sun," he continues, looking up at the sky. "But there is more between Heaven and Earth than what we can see and feel. I was born from the desert and into the desert I shall go at the end of my days. In the meantime, my fate is in the hands of Gozreh. She spoke to me in a vision, and showed me the path. This is the will of the Gods."

![]() |

Uzma raves on about his vision as the gang slowly make headway into the underbrush.
GM rolls: 1d20 ⇒ 11d100 ⇒ 22
You guys have the best luck.
Suddenly, Uzma stops at a rhythmic clacking sound in the brush.

Razif al-Akkuya |

Razif moves up next to Uzma, drawing his scimitar. He hopes Uzma knows what he's doing, but in case things go south, he's ready.

![]() |

The snake's rattle continues. Like a dart, it lunges for the druid.
Only Razif and Uzma may act this round. You all may join in next round.
Korum Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Layaali Initiative: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Razif Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Uzma Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Snake Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Map updated. Razif and Uzma may act before the snake!

Razif al-Akkuya |

Razif wastes no time: he jumps in front of Uzma to hopefully shield him, and attempts to attack the lunging snake.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Crit Confirmation: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Crit Bonus Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

![]() |

Razif slashes the snake prior to its lunge with its scimitar, nearly cleaving the beast in twain. The red-and-black serpent coils up as the druid lunges for it.
Grab (Grapple) as a combat maneovre provokes attacks of opportunity unless you have the feat 'Improved Grapple'.
AoO on Uzma: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 81d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0 MISS!
The injured snake proves slower than Uzma, who grapples the snake in both hands. The snake writhes and twitches, its rattle sounding ominously. It bites at the druid from between his hands.
Bite Attack on Uzma: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 151d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2 HIT! - 2 hp dmg, Uzma
Uzma Fortitude Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 SUCCESS!
Uzma takes a bite to his forearm for his pains, but feels no venom flowing into him.
Round 1!
Razif, Layaali, and then Uzma may act!

Layaali Twice-Born |

"Are you alright over there?" Layaali calls out from her place in the underbrush. She has her near the plants and is currently trying to cut a thick fern out of her way.
Approaching Uzma she notices the snake in his hands, and stops, careful to keep her distance.
"Do you need... help?" she asks.
She would have been hacking into the underbrush, but Layaali backs up at the sight of the snake, so she's going to be where she's placed at the end of the turn.

Razif al-Akkuya |

Completely confused with Uzma's actions, Razif decides to try to knock the snake out instead of killing it.
Nonlethal Attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 2 - 4 = 2
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
"Uzma! You're sick already, do you really need to add poison to your list of problems?"

Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11
Assuming that it was simply threatened by their intrusion into its territory, Uzma attempts to throw the snake far away enough to allow it to escape...
"It's simply afraid!" he explains to his companions.

![]() |

Uzma moves to throw the snake, then realises its size and shifts his plan.
Awaiting Uzma’s revised move.

Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
When you wrote rattler, I assumed a smaller than medium snake!!!
"Give me a sac or a rope!" Uzma urges as he pins the snake down.
Knowledge, Nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 Should have rolled that right from the start!

![]() |

Apologies, Uzma. You are correct. You can pin the snake now as you’ve made a successful CMB to maintain your grapple.
Uzma kneels down onto the wriggling snake, pinning it to the earth.
The snake begins to severely wriggle in an attempt to break free.
CMB to break free: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 SUCCESS!
The snake breaks out of the druid’s hands and flees for the brush.
Razif, you may take an AoO!

Razif al-Akkuya |

Razif tries another nonlethal attack.
Nonlethal Attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 2 - 4 = 11
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
"I don't have anything on me! Best I can do is knock it out!"

![]() |

Razif swings with the flat of his blade at the fleeing snake but misses. The snake scurries into the underbrush, disappearing from sight.
GM roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Drael and Korum may act! Remember that the terrain is dense - three squares per 5 feet movement of uncleared area.

Drael Kapernos |

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Drael, having been staring in shock at the snake, breaks out of his stupor as it slithers away, moving protectively to Uzma's side. Did any of you see where it went? he asks, axe raised in case it re-appears. Not really sure what else to do, so moved and will ready an attack if he sees it.

Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
"Over there," Uzma answers Drawl, pointing to the underbrush northwest.
Given Uzma's knowledge of the desert viper, is it possible to ascertain how likely it is that it will attack again? Can we assume that it has been scared off, or should we worry?

![]() |

The afternoon desert sun beats down on the gang within the open-air courtyard.
