Agreed. Or at the very least, a "fire and fall back" type encounter.
Sugua Bran't |
Oh yeah this is a fire and fall back but it isnt a run encounter.. the reason being they won't get tired before other members do.. meaning we cant outpace them. However if we focus them down it should be fine. Luckily I made the check to know they Regenerate.. I don't know about the bad times with the claws though.
Alphonse Calderon |
gunna say, fighting trolls seems like a bad idea :p
Seeing the large green lumbering creatures Alphonse is weary. These creatues look like they are going to be quite tough. Preparing his own defence he casts his shield spell raising an arcane defence he would surly need. this fight will be painful he could sence that. In preperation for their inevitable charge Alphonse preps his magics for an attack
"these creatures look fearsom, Sugua, please take this moment to shine as im sure we need it! Gonzo, Durielle, lets hang back, we should let our better armored compatiots tangle face to face with these creatures
casting shield as i stated, and prep an ear-piercing scream to hit a troll as they charge in, though if i remember trolls have high fort saves so it wont do much more than just damage probably
ear-piercing scream:dc 15 fort save: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Sugua Bran't |
Sugua sighs as he remembers these creatures from experiences long ago, armies who tangled with them seemed to have trouble with only a few. They were tough bastards always getting back up unless you had fire.. or was it Acid? One of them. " Damn. Trolls. This is something to see, normally they dont travel in packs like that. Let's see we have about Two hundred feet between us and they dont move that fast. If you have a bow or something We have to focus on one and use fire.. or acid.. I think. If we start running though, they will get spooked and run too.. and they dont get tired. Not long enough to matter that is. Best we can do is limit their movement and take them down one by one. Its a fight to be sure! I hope you have those pointy sticks from before.. Little Lizard you got anything that can slow them down? "
Khargol Uzgurn |
Are we sure a fighting retreat is the best option? We're at 20' movement speed because of armor/small characters. Even if we're taking a full-move and an attack each turn, they'll have covered the distance in two rounds. Even if we all gang up and take down one of them in the first round of combat, a single successful rend is going to put somebody down, if not kill them outright.
Durielle Omenstar |
"Oh dear," Durielle says raising a hand to her mouth. The memories of four of their adventuring group fallen and nearly frozen coming to her mind. The fact that one of them gave up on his charter then and there was enough to bring fear of what a meeting like this could bring.
"Do we dare to retreat to the Sootscales' domain, Clousuk? Would your people's warriors being willing to assist us as we will not be able to approach the mites domain to retrieve the statue without getting past this," she asks the black-scaled kobold.
She pauses as a flicker of a future moment appears before her.
"There m-may be a chance that if we leave them undisturbed, they might be satisfied with those bodies that lay on the field of battle. I admit it is very, very faint...but perhaps...?"
Trying to have this conversation in the first of the "free rounds" before they really close the distance.
Sugua Bran't |
Well Sugua knows the best option but is sure some of you want to run and you tend not to like his words so he made a compromise. The main issue here isnt even the 20ft movement, its the fact that Even IF we could run, the Lower Con and movement people would get left behind and most likely die, while a firm stand together would have maybe one death less likely because healing is a thing. Its more we dont want to have them have the ability to strike us without some recourse. Just enough so they have to do more than a double move or charge. Just a note so you are aware Sugua is not included in the left behind BECAUSE he has a Higher Con and Endurance.. so this is more for people like.. Durielle who likely cant run. We also don't know about the rend.
Sugua Bran't |
Open field, the GM moved the map a bit to give us some breathing room there arent really trees, things like Grease and Whatnot would help and If you have a longspear Bracing would be good to use against Charging.
Sugua Bran't |
Sugua shakes his head to Durielle signalling a no on the possibility. " They ain't nice creatures, like to eat alot and have to to live. They dont care about how they get it but they tend to be dumb and reckless, we can use that. Sorry to tell ya Durielle-Elf "
Khargol Uzgurn |
Question for Tuyena: How are they coming at us? Are they just double-moving or are they actually full-tilt running? Are they spread out, straight line, or more 2x2?
Finally..how difficult would it be for Khargol to cut his scale mail off mid-run? /only half joking
Clousuk Sootscale |
Firmly in the "this is probably suicide" camp. Especially if that knowledge check was sufficient to tell us what these guys are capable of.
Clousuk maintains his triumphant pose at first, but the doubts of his faithful followers soon erodes on his willpower. As the reality of the incoming giants dawns on him, the tip of his rapier droops.
"Clousuk says Clousuk, spare lives of ugly trolls for now, yes?"
Durielle Omenstar |
My number one question is still whether the Sootscales would assist us if we retreated. I'm pretty confident given the description of relative distance to the kobolds' caves and this location we should all be able to make it to their enclosure before anyone would say, drop prone from exhaustion, as being suggested by Sugua's Constitution comments. Right now, acquiring reinforcements may be the best choice if possible. Otherwise whatever running last stand idea you have may be the next best. Let's try to figure out the best chance of survival's possibilities before defaulting to anything else if we can.
I assume that the Sootscales helping us decision is really for DM Tuyena to tell us via Clousuk, so any chance for a word on that, O DM?
DM Tuyena |
Question for Tuyena: How are they coming at us? Are they just double-moving or are they actually full-tilt running? Are they spread out, straight line, or more 2x2? Finally..how difficult would it be for Khargol to cut his scale mail off mid-run? /only half joking
They're double moving, but if you run, they can easily also run. Forever. The kobold caverns are about 2 or 3 minutes away, so those of you in light armor could run back to there I suppose. At the price of nearly everyone in medium getting caught and killed.

Clousuk Sootscale |
Well, leaving half the party to be mashed into pasta sauce isn't exactly an option. And Clousuk would sooner die than tick off his Chief...
"Clousuk says Clousuk, leading trolls to kobold den make Chief Sootscale... less than pleased," he says to Durielle, scratching his nose with his free claw. His sword has not quite been lowered all the way.
Khargol Uzgurn |
Honestly, right now I'm thinking the best chance for the most people to live through this is for one person to try and draw the trolls away. If one person hangs back a bit while the others run it's possible that everyone else will be too far gone to bother continuing pursuit...or at the very least, can provide a momentary distraction to one or two of the trolls and ease the load on everyone else.
Another important question here: Does Vlad have his horse? If he does it seems possible that a character like Clousuk, at the very least, could get yanked onto its back and then you've got one less slow character to worry about. Really, if everyone who had a horse had brought it, this would be a complete non-issue. Hindsight and all that, I guess.
Vladimir Ducheski |
No, I left Shadow at Oleg's because when we left Oleg's thistime we were intending on exploring the temple.
Donovan of Restov |
If there appears to be no other way out, Donovan can martyr complex it up.
Durielle Omenstar |
"I-I think we're really in trouble. We may not make it back to the kobolds' camp."
Looking at Clousuk, Durielle says sadly, "Whatever anger your leader may feel...I don't know if we will live through this without your brethern's assistance."
Drawing her bow, she prepares to act based on what the more martial members indicate.
1st free round: Move action to draw her bow, if signal is given to retreat done while moving. Sacrifice Standard for Move to make this a Double move as Durielle goes after trolls and needs to "catch up" each round to the main party by being ahead of them if they stop to take attack actions.
2nd free round: Not yet determined, but I'm assuming some type of Move will be included.
Khargol Uzgurn |
Don't think later is a good idea. Later means the entire party is in charge range at the same time. And truth be told I wouldn't mind retiring Khargol and giving something else a shot.

Gonzo the Magnificent |
Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
I'm assuming a roll that high would at least reveal their weakness to fire as it is pretty common knowledge (I assume) and knowing they are trolls does not bode well for us.
"No, not trolls, of all the-" He stops mid-sentence and begins digging through his cloak once more, pulling out yet another scroll and reads it through, very similar effect occurs, but this time the aura appears more opaque before fading.
2nd round: Scroll of Shield; 3rd round:
As his last minute preparation, Gonzo says a few arcanic words and performs a short series of ritualistic gestures as a transparent coat of armor conjures around his torso and evaporates into the rays of the sun. after finishing he moves closer to Alphonse and Durielle and prepares for the worst.
After casting Mage Armor, during the current round Gonzo readies a standard action to use fire jet whenever the Troll that Sugua was aiming at charges and gets within reach.
"If you wish not to be singed I would advise you not stand in front of me!" He warns the others.
Sugua Bran't |
Sugua nods " They would outpace us, the Warren is at least a several hundred yards back and they don't get tired. Use your magic, use your bows anything you can to stop their charge or weaken them and if you have a long stick use that too! If you don't hope your armor is good enough, try and aim for the same target and get some torches ready! My sword can burn them too but it need to cook for a bit "
Sugua Focuses on one and unloads arrows into it with the shortbow he had.. it wasnt the best but it was what he had. He didnt want to waste the opportunity the blessings they had gave. Once the got in close He would adjust back enough drawing his Naginata a Stabbing with his extended reach into a Troll (Preferably the one he is studying -1 to hit and damage otherwise).
The Shortbow doesnt have the range penalties included so please Adjust GM

Targeting the same troll as Sugua, Vladimir fires his bow repeatedly. As the trolls arrive, he steps back into a line with Sugua, dropping his bow and readying his longspear and stabs.

Donovan of Restov |
Maybe not, lemme get my actions in there.
Seeing their doom coming down upon them, Donovan expends his powers to improve Vlad's attempts at weapons fire.
Round 1
Use Touch of Good power on Vlad
Round 2
Use Touch of Good power on Vlad
Round 3
Use Touch of Good power on Vlad
Touch of Good (Sp): You can touch a creature as a standard action, granting a sacred bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws equal to half your cleric level (minimum 1) for 1 round. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.
Current Round
Cast shield of faith on Vlad
The reason I'm using Touch of Good instead of the Nobility domain power Inspiring Word is that Vlad's already getting a morale bonus from the bard song, so the sacred bonus will stack on top of that. Inspiring Word is +2 but it's a morale bonus so it all washes out in the end, and better to use that once the bard song ends.
Clousuk Sootscale |
The morale bonus is actually from bless - inspire courage gives a competence bonus.
As his minions seem to regain their will to fight, Clousuk's rapier is raised high once more. Afraid? Certainly the kobold had been no such thing. After all, the poor scaleless needed their fearless leader to guide them!
"Clousuk says Clousuk, for honor! For glory! For Chief Sootscale!"
First Round: Inspire Courage (+1)
Second Round: Cast grease (DC 12) in the path of a troll everybody's not shooting at.
Third Round: Ditto for another troll.
Edit: Fourth Round: And another, so all but the one.
Three rounds of inspire courage left.
Vladimir Ducheski |
The Spear however will hit, does a long Spear have brace?

yes
Khargol Uzgurn |
"This place is going to be the death of me yet..." the warrior mutters to himself, silently calling Abadar's judgement down upon these enemies.
Swift action for Judgement, then commence with the pin-cushioning.

Bonus Damage vs Charge: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 = 9
And there's the luck that I'm more accustomed to.

EVERY troll face plants in their grease puddles. This gives the whole party two more free turns of actions. Three more if you keep retreating.

2nd free round: Not yet determined, but I'm assuming some type of Move will be included.
2nd round updated: Move Action, (I'm assuming they are within 120 ft) Cast doom (DC 14) at troll Clousuk attempts to grease its path. It causes shaken: A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked.

Sugua quickly outlines a plan to make a fighting retreat. the oracle hurriedly attempts to memorize her part...but the monsters were so big and scary!
The trolls approach hungry and immense, Durielle realizes she's been rooted to the spot trying to think of her part, but the others are already firing arrows and moving away. Fear grips her, and she realizes her frailty is going to be her worst enemy in this time. She sees a path to the future which leads her to a choice which keeps her ahead of her comrades actions. As they reach her tries to find moments in the future of the trolls which can be exploited and make them true so her companions will be successful.
She tried to push the visions she saw that only led to death. Now was not the time for such demoralizing things. She makes a quick glance toward the entrance to the kobolds' warren. Will they help us? she finds herself wondering. Maybe they wouldn't need it...but if so, would they?
The future is truly unwritten.
Sugua Bran't |
Sugua smiles but he seems alot more serious this time. The fire from before helped immensely Sugua would nod to Vlad and Khargol. " Alriight! Thats one down go for the one here that fell and skewer it while it tries to get up the rest are dealing with the mess themselves. Like a Hot poker through BUTTER! "
Suguaspins the Naginata in his hands and comes down wit the gravity upon the one prone enemy near them.
Should be that one is close and the others are varying levels of close and still need two rounds to get near. MMM and they charged

You mean Longbow? from the prone enemies or Sugua's attack? Hey remember they can still be hit you just have to ready when they stand up for the first round. Sugua is taking advantage of the AoO on standing and the lower AC
