Hrm I dunno about that.. that penalty seems to apply regardless. COVER is generally the thing you can avoid if they are big enough though. Thus why most ranged gets PBS and Precise Shot.

Bobafett Aloysius |

From the PRD--the rule no one seems to know.
Shooting or Throwing into a Melee
If you shoot or throw a ranged weapon at a target engaged in melee with a friendly character, you take a –4 penalty on your attack roll. Two characters are engaged in melee if they are enemies of each other and either threatens the other. (An unconscious or otherwise immobilized character is not considered engaged unless he is actually being attacked.)
If your target (or the part of your target you're aiming at, if it's a big target) is at least 10 feet away from the nearest friendly character, you can avoid the –4 penalty, even if the creature you're aiming at is engaged in melee with a friendly character

Suna Razorfang |

I suppose if you count the beginning from where they are instead of the distance in between.. The same is true of a Medium with a reach weapon in that case.. that is useful. For large I guess you can aim for the backmost square. Size isnt a requirement per say I mean that MOST of the time with a large creature there will be an ally (If one is right on them) within 10 ft of the creature because it is that big.

Yes, the boards have been awful thi s week.

Narrator Prime |

yeah, when I tried to get on the boards were down. Then I had to go to a wedding and didn't have any way of letting you know.
As for the net, you technically fired before Bitha could close so it doesn't matter any way. I'll make a ruling in future based on the situation and the shot I reckon. Normally I believe large targets can be hit is certain squares, and reach makes a big difference too. My group have generally worked on the idea if you're not in base to base, you can target it without the -4.
Back soon with an in game update.
Cheers

A break for a few days is fine with me.
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

Bitha Sark |

I didn't think I would like Warm Bodies but I did. I'd recommend it, too.

Bitha Sark |

Zombieland was awesome, no doubt!

Narrator Prime |

Wooooo, huge Christmas period for me. Thank you all for your patience, I very much appreciate it, especially given my early hardline on posting in the thread.
As for Zombie movies.
- Comedies are Shaun of the Dead, Zombie Land, Army of Darkness in that order of preference. However, Army of darkness was in the top spot for sooooo very long. We still use Klaatu Verata Nikto as our go to spell words from that movie hehe.
- Traditional zombie flicks. Gotta love me some Dawn of the dead by John Romero (both modern and original versions.) These movies rocked in terms of just traditional omg everyones a zombie.
- How I think zombies will actually happen - 28 days later. Maybe world war Z. Both of those are close to scientifically possible. Both make zombies that are fast. That makes it really scary for me.
If we were playing some Carrion Crown I'd throw some zombie love your way. Who knows, maybe even some chance of it in here.
Game update in about an hour. Gotta get some chores done then I'll write it.
cheers

Hey Suna,
Re reading your concerns from last night I get your point. I'll work on some better outcomes for high rolls in future. It does seem pointless in hindsight to have you succeed at those rolls, only to still have you targeted since you were in front and in range.
I think in hindsight I should have given the groups initiative a bonus for the successes to see if they could react first instead. Maybe +2 for every success?
Alternatively, depending on how high your perception was, I could take that into consideration for distance you are when you see it.
The 24 perception was to beat its hide roll (+14 to hide in deserts for these things). You rolled a 29 which means if I take that into consideration you would have spotted it about ten feet out of range. I'll work on those options later on, but I certainly understand your point.
I also need to remember this is PbP so we have time for you to make decisions yourselves rather than me posting those options in to keep things moving. We were doing well before the break, think I was probably rushing things when I got back.
Let me know your thoughts folks.

Agreed Suna. This module is turning out to be quite deadly for low level. Not that I mind so much, but it is something for the players to keep in mind. Seems like Paizo pulled off the kid gloves this time around.
The damage from that trap is 2d6+2 and it resets. That's deadly for second level characters.
Fun to DM though.

Narrator Prime |

Good question. It functions like a magic trap but cannot be removed as a threat except through disable device. You could try smashing the walls around it in the hopes of breaking circuits, but the walls are glaucite and without Adamantine weapons that's not likely to happen.
Your best bet is to disable it, or get through the room before the next electrical discharge.
Looking at your character, I'm guessing you're going to throw resist energy on yourself.

Suna Razorfang |

Yup pretty much was gunna do that and either break the mechanism completely to stop it from sparking or use my hammer and cause the arch to forcefully go through it while Boba tries again. That way it only hits him. But then he would be safe.

Narrator Prime |

The last one might work. I'll let you do that and increase the time it takes to fully charge. You can't stop it completely as the whole room is charging, but you can earth enough out that it doubles the time taken.
That would give Boba time to make two more checks. If he fails by five or more though, he's still going to be hit. You'd be protecting everyone else though.
Nice plan. If this were fifth edition I'd award you inspiration for that.
Edit - actually, if you also held Bitha's two handed weapon so you were touching both sides of the room, I reckon you could act me a perfect insulator for boba. He could then take twenty, but I'd roll two sets of damage against you. Remembering if either one scores more than 10 you'll get some damage. You wouldn't get a reflex save, but I'd allow fortitude instead. Kinda like touching out the pain.

Suna Razorfang |

Cool beans, Alright here comes a post Demonstrating just that I assume you shall roll the damage for Suna forcefully doing this but regardless it most likely wont be much.
Also Thank you, I did it in the mindset of the character. If he were more Support He imply would place the buff on Boba.. but because his mindset is on self-sufficiency he thinks of ways to break, mangle and power through Tech.

Bitha Sark |

No joke! That is a doozy of a trap.

Narrator Prime |

I have to say, that was a really great plan, and I like to award planning like that by giving it a shot at working if its feasible. Good job all.
A note on technology and applying real life physics to the game. I encourage players to solve problems themselves rather than just let the dice do it for them. However, also note that this tech is going to be beyond the understanding of most of you. Boba and Alyna are likely the two most able to come up with cunning plans to outdo the tech, as they both have feats or class features that give them that knowledge.
As such, if you come up with a great plan that is feasible, I reckon we can say either of those two suggest the idea and let others complete it. That way any player can have a say, but in game we get the verisimilitude of having the most likely characters propose it.
Also, until you get to higher levels, trying to pull off uni level physics or expert electrical plans won't fly heheh.
The plan that Suna came up with was Gold. It ticked all my boxes for clever play and epicness for story telling.

Hey, sorry for the inactivity last few days. I'm in a mandatory Leadership/Management course that lasts until mid-february and have reading/homework/essays/briefings to do. I try to log on at least once each day, but sometimes I get distracted.
That being said, Great Work on the trap! And yes, Alyna has a few healing left, but all from channel energy.
Note: I'll update the number of Channel Energies she has left after everyone decides whether they want 1 or 2.

Suna Razorfang |

Makes sense, a form of assimilation. Though they are not nicknames but rather titles that represent what you are. He is a Hunter, he tracks and takes down prey from stealth, power or whatever is needed. Bitha is a Warrior, one who is known for great martial prowess and abnormal durability. Zlota is a Beastmaster, she fights with a companion creature that seems to become augmented by her power And so on an so forth.
