Into the Blue: Spellgard II

Game Master Rev Rosey

This was Sleeper in the Tomb of Dreams toned down for a lower level group.
The characters were the ongoing players from Scepter Tower.

"So tunnel is only way? Then we need to go. If monster attack, then monster die. There are eight of us. We kill it if we have to. Just be prepared."

Without the compulsion on it, the tunnel is still an eerie place, reflecting and re-reflecting your images as you troop back up it. Returning at last to the room with the wrecking eye, only Snaggletooth's trip-wired door stands between you and the zombie beholder.

MAP

Just a reminder of what the room looks like. It's also adorned with the corpses of the foulspawn you took out earlier. Snaggletooth knows how to operate the wrecking ball. What's the plan?

I know Caksusa and Jervace are walking free, but what about Rishi - is he still tied up?

Female Genasi Firesoul Wizard 7

It seems like the smart thing to do unless either Caksusa or Jervace will vouch his parole.

They won't vouch for anything at the moment. Their one hope of getting out alive is to keep with Snaggletooth. They're staying schtum.

I take it that means you're going first, right? :)

Indeed. Place yourselves wherever you want to be when the door opens and you will get a surprise round. And roll init, adding a +2 for Caine.

MAP

Init so far
Caine - 27
Leo - 21
Caksusa - 14
Zombie beholder - 12
Jervace - 9

Commander Caine - with Erik's bonus, you need to use two surges to regain max hp. You will then have 4 surges left. You have used all your dailies except Encouraging Stance.

H17 please

Cue the music!

But of course

"Let's take out this floating sack of rot first so we can leave" Brujo raises his free hand and draws a mask of blue flames over his face.

Commander, with the best will in the world, you cannot charge through a closed door.

I'm here. Just got caught up with my Xbox this week. Bioware's Dragon Age is one incredible game. I have been playing it non-stop most of the week. Very addictive. Init=1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

place me at M17 please

and FYI, it was the door on the other side that was tripwired. so they would trip on it, slip on the platform and fall down the pit in the scythe room. This door was just closed and Snaggletooth sat on the other side to listen for people.

Got it on the doors. Thanks.
I'm trying to do you a map which combines both rooms, but it may be too small to be really useful. Plan your surprise round actions and post them if you'd be so kind. Any order really, I can sort that out as needed.

MAP

Caine - 27
Brujo - 22

Teeny map. Sorry about that, but it is at least giving you a clearer idea of where you can and can't go and isn't utterly useless if you zoom in.

Surprise round actions please. Any order. I'll sort it out. Leo's will be to open the door as a minor. Caine and Brujo may wish to delay until after him.

Caine delays until after Leo acts.

Male Human Bard/Warlord/Warlock/Circus Monkey/Soda Jerk/Etc

Erik, having grown used to fighting together with Leo, will enter with the paladin, staying adjacent.

Spoiler:

Where on the map is the beholder

Zombie added in. I've delayed Brujo until after Leo.

Move to S22

Brujo slices a flaming arc in the sir

Changing Ray 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 vs Will; Damage 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 cold/force, Z is dazed until the end of next turn.

Surprise round, Brujo. You can only take one action. Move, standard or minor.

NOTE: The dark areas on the scythe bit of the map are a pit. You can't see how deep it is.

Still need surprise round actions from the following:
Brujo - to confirm his single action
Caine - to confirm his single action
Snaggletooth
Perigia

Jervace will do nothing much, as he only has 1hp, but Caksusa will ready a warp orb for when the zombie gets in range.

Female Genasi Firesoul Wizard 7

Perigia is holding her action until Leo opens the door.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

And the zombie beholder is just sitting there? That appears to be long range with a dagger. And my other plan requires several high skill rolls and at least three turns without getting hit with an eyebeam that stuns or dazes or immobilizes. (I was going to lead him into the room with the hanged ones) So that's a no go. Crossbow? ok.

Snaggletooth moves up to the edge of the platform to get a good shot in. move to S22. I think we should draw him back into the eye ball room, so we can engage him in melee.

Sorry had a busy day of helping the parents get ready for turkey day.

Move to R22

Leo opens the doors and reveals the familiar scythe room. Floating over the pit is the malevolent, but strangely pitiful sight of the beholder zombie. At the sound of the doors, it rotates to survey the party and you see that the creature has been blinded. Whatever else it may be capable of, it poses no danger with the legendary eye beams that would normally make it such a terror.

Perigia and Caine - are you doing anything before we head into the first full combat round?

MAP

*Leo - acted
Brujo - acted
Caine - readied action
Snaggletooth - acted

Zombie beholder - no action (surprise round)

Only unsheathing the sword and activating encouraging stance.

Flattening Charge (Fort) vs. R (if hit, R is prone) 1d20+12=26, Damage 1d8+6=12

if the attack hits 8 temp hp to Leo

With a tune playing inside his head, Caine barrels onto his foe.

Caine, are you sure? Rishi is tied up, defenseless and has surrendered. That will kill him and also reduce the goodwill that Caksusa and Jervace have towards the party. Substantially.

Target is J then

Male Kobold Rogue 6

Are you doing an end-around, Caine, my boy? the zombie Beholder is the only enemy here. You really want to stir up that pot? And after Rosey came up with such good names for them, too? It's your character, so do what you want, but I don't understand this.

Dark Archive

Attack the zombie; gawd! i hate having only an hour of sleep lol

I'll interpret that as a readied action if the zombie gets in range, Caine.

Female Genasi Firesoul Wizard 7

Perigia will cast Sleep on the zombie. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21 vs. Will to hit.

Not wishing to nitpick, and it's a great idea, but Sleep doesn't appear to be in your profile for one thing and I'm pretty sure you're out of range for another. Do correct me if I'm wrong though.

Sure enough. I shouldn't post when half asleep myself. I must have switched Sleep out for something else. I will hold my action until the zombie moves into range.

Leo moves to the edge of the platform and goes pale. Draped over one of the scythes and motionless, lies Gratitude the tiefling.

Male Kobold Rogue 6

As he stands next to Leo, Snaggletooth growls. "Nice Tiefling is dead. Did monster get him? Or did he try to cross and fail?" He snarls in spite of himself. "I blame monster. Monster bad, monster die."

and not to be a pill or anything, but Snaggletooth moved the edge of the platform during the surprise round. he should be standing next to leo. Or leo moved next to him. (Leo did open the door during the surprise round, yes?)

Rev

Spoiler:
OMG! You are the best DM ever and one of the evilest people I know!!! Gratitude tripped over Snaggletooth's tripwire and fell onto the scythes, didn't he?? Holy crap! That is so awesome! And tragic. I liked him. Snaggletooth did, too. Let me know if I am right, please. I still can't get over it. THIS is why I love playing with you. Man!

Map sorted. Apologies. Yes, Leo opened the door and has moved next to Snaggletooth on his turn this round. Snaggletooth should have seen Gratitude first.

Snaggletooth

Spoiler:
Yes. You're absolutely right. Gratitude triggered the trap and landed on the scythes. I rolled for it and he failed his athletics check by a lot.

Rev

Spoiler:

Ok have an idea or two, and I need to run a question or two by you before I even think about doing them.

From my spot in R22 can I tell how far dow the pit drops? Could one jump onto the scythes and stand on them with athletics check? And finally how high up in the beholder floating?

Also should I reroll for my changing ray or can I use the roll I posted?

Leo and Snaggletooth can see how far the pits drops as they have a light source (Leo cracks a sunrod).

60 feet of darkness stretch below you. In the depths, they think they can just make out bones and worse of earlier victims.

Falling will cause 6d10 damage.

The zombie spins slowly sensing, rather than seeing the intruders, five feet above the scythes.

Brujo

Spoiler:
You can certainly jump onto the scythes. They're stable and won't move unless the mechanism on the platform turns them.

Jumping horizontally works as follows:
Make an athletics check and divide it by 10 (not rounded). The result is the number of squares you can jump over. You land on the square determined by your result and if that is over a pit or chasm, you fall and lose the rest of your move action.
If you move at least two squares before making the jump, divide the check by 5 rather than 10.

Brujo quickly jumps back and tenses his legs.

Shift to S21

As he does he slices the sir sending a wave of energy at the beholder

Changing Ray 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 vs. will; Damage 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14, and the beholder is dazed until the end of turn. Geez my first roll was alot better

Brujo - apologies. Meant to say in the midst of answering your other questions that you can keep the earlier roll for changing ray.

Finally starting to come to terms with his nature, Brujo sends blue fire slamming into the zombie. Spinning wildly, the creature seems disoriented by the attack.

Caine moves to the mechanism.

"What did you do to this Snaggletooth? Can I undo it without tearing the whole thing apart?"

Snaggletooth

Spoiler:
He can, but he'll need to make a DC17 Thievery check with your guidance to do so. It would be a standard action for him and a standard for you to either help him (aid another) or do it yourself.

"I thought I wrecked it so no one could use, but let me look...." Snaggletooth looks at the device. "I can fix, so you can move blades."

Caine, I'll do the Thievery check to fix it and you can use your standard to move blades to cross. Thievery check= 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

Between them, man and kobold fiddle with the mechanism and force the blades back into a bridge formation.

Forgive me if I don't try and redraw the map tonight. You can now cross the scythes, but of course you're still over a 60 foot deep pit while doing so.

Caksusa moves closer, still not quite able to get into range as the mutilated globe turns malevolently and moves slowly towards the heroes.
