"Which way shall we go, west or east?"

When Jaxom is puzzled by the magical dagger and ring, Silas has a look to provide a second opinion.

He waits to see if anyone else can read them, and later suggests, "Since we're here in creepy ville, perhaps we should explore? There was a door to the west we past."

Detect Evil on the items

The dagger is a +1 Dagger that grants its wielder the usage of the Witch Knife feat.

The Ring is a ring of chameleon power

As the party comes to the door, Jaxom casts Detect Magic (because I figured you would). He senses two magical auras both from inside the room. Moderate Abjuration and Moderate Necromancy.

Lucanor detects a moderately evil aura behind the door.

Going to wait until the results of the various checks are reveled before opening the door. But that's probably what Silas will do next unless there's a problem.

Encounter Map

Both Auras are from items....so Silas cannot identify them.

Lucanor doesn't find a trap on the door.

Silas opens the door to show.

Within this room stands the disfigured corpse of a cleric of Nethys,
its eyes and mouth stitched shut with coarse cord. In one of its
desiccated hands, it clutches a weird metal cage with a rotting
dwarf’s head bolted within. The room is otherwise empty, as if the
creature were imprisoned here or locked up for safekeeping.

The desiccated creature turns its sightless eyes to you but doesn't move....and the head in the cage mouths words that come out as hideous croaks.

The Weird Object, Kn:Arcana DC 17:

Cresset of Grisly Interrogation
Aura moderate necromancy; CL 5th
Slot none; Price 10,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This small iron cage is engraved with dozens of ancient
funerary runes. On opposing sides of the cage frame, two
large bolts can be adjusted to hold a humanoid head in a
stationary position within. When a head is placed inside and
the command word is spoken, you can sequester information
from it as if it were under the effect of a speak with dead
spell. The cage can coerce three answers per day, which do
not need to be from the same head or asked in a limited
period of time (for example, you could ask a kobold’s head
a question in the morning, an orc’s head a question in the
afternoon, and an ogre’s head a question in the evening).
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, speak with dead;
Cost 5,000 gp, 400 XP
