Goz mask size increase?

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

I was looking through my Inner Sea World Guide when I came across the Goz Mask. I was very intriqued by the ability to see through fog and smoke effects, but then I noticed that the wearer of the mask counts as size large while it is worn. Does that mean if my human character wears the mask, he then takes up a 10ft square, gains +1 to CMB and CMD, gains reach, and gains a -1 to hit and AC? I'm most concerned about taking up extra space and just wanted to make sure that wearing the mask actually does this before I purchase one for one of my PFS characters.

On a fluff note, if the mask does make you take up a 10ft square, how exactly is this accomplished from a facial adornment?

4 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

It's not size large, it's one size category larger. For humans, elves and so on, that is indeed large, but a halfling would only get to be considered medium.

And it's not for everything. It's just for wind effects, which affect creatures depending on sight. For these effects, you count as one category larger.

Severe enough wind will give immense problems while flying, might make it impossible for you to walk against the wind, and might even blow you away. The mask basically grounds you firmly, so the wind will have less power over you.

Ahhhh, I see your point it could be read that way, and may be as it is intended to be.

It all depends on how you read the 'and'. It could be broken into two clauses.

"you are treated as one size category larger than you are"
and
"gain a +4 bonus on all saving throws made to resist the effects of wind while wearing a goz mask"

If you take out the "gain a +4 bonus on all saving throws made" does it make sense?
"you are treated as one size category larger than you are to resist the effects of wind while wearing a goz mask"
Yes it does.

Though it can be read as the first break down and that you get to be treated as one size category larger and get +4 saves vs wind effects with the larger part not being modified by the wind effects.

I can see people arguing that it makes you count as larger for more then wind effects. It needs some rewording or an official errata on it to ensure people do nto try to use the Goz mask to wield a greatsword in one hand.

Oh English, you are such an awkward language!

OgeXam is correct. The mask allows you to function as though you were one size category larger for the purposes of wind effects, such as the gust of wind spell or a hurricane. Such spells often outline the effect that they have on creatures of various size categories, with larger creatures suffering a lesser effect. The mask does not actually increase your size, nor does it bestow any of the typical benefits/penalties associated with being larger except for the specific benefit given about wind effects.

Thanks for that. I was initially reading it as two separate clauses with a simple omission of the normal "Granting you X bonus" wording that came afterward. I guess I've just become too used to poor wording from 3.5.

Thanks for the help.
