Darom's axe makes quick work of another beetle, but the battle is beginning to wear him down. His arm and leg are stained with his blood. Sensing weakness the last beetle strikes at the wounded warrior.

Darom glances over his shoulder, nodding in thanks to Isu before turning back to the final beetle.

The last of the beetles goes splat under the massive blow from Darom.

Looking around, you find a well crafted sap near the base of a tree. The only light in the orchard is coming from Isu's spell.

so you have some weird dead beetles, a masterwork sap, and some weird gooey stuff on a dead/dying tree

Any chance of identifying what that gooey stuff is? I know I probably don't have the approriate skill but others might.

Isu looks around for any tracks he can find other than his own, his comrades, and the beetles.

Isu:

As you move deeper into the trees, you notice signs of a struggle. It appears that two humanoids fought. The victor half carried the loser, most likely a large person, away to the south. You cannot make out much more, it looks like a few days have passed based on the marks.

DC 12 Nature or Religion Knowledge:

The purplish gooey stuff is demon's bile.

Demon’s bile is biological in nature, and if left in an open area unchecked, even a small amount of it can begin growing until, in 1d4 months, the substance takes up a 10-foot-by-10-foot area of filth. Demon’s bile that covers an area of that size or larger then begins growing in earnest, expanding at a rate of about 5 feet per day. Demon’s bile attracts vermin, and those that wallow in it (as well as some other creatures exposed to it) often grow in size, gain the fiendish template, or both. Additionally, demon’s bile that covers a 10-foot-by-10-foot area or greater has a 50% chance to spew forth fiendish vermin every 1d4 days. Any good-aligned damage, damage from cold iron weapons, or positive energy damage applied to any 5-foot square of bile destroys it.

To get things moving along, lets assume someone in the group puts some of the goo into a flask and you all travel back to the tavern for the night

As you walk up to The Witch's End Tavern, the door suddenly busts open as a drunken man flies out. A rather large woman yells at the lump, "I am in no mood for your antics, now get HOME!"

Cheers and roaring laughter spill out before the door swings shut.

He eyes up the man, wondering what he did. "Fellow, did you made anyone inside angry at you?"
