Carmelia Torvé |
Hey, GM, good to see you and welcome back. I hope you're doing well.
Lapyd |
Hi mates,
Posting it on all my games - unfortunately I will have to take a hiatus due to some complications at work. I'll be extra busy for the next 6 to 8 weeks, and instead of limiting myself to a single post or two per week, I will instead just fully take a break from the forums and some other activities.
My profound apologies to GMs and my fellow players, as well as the players from the games I host. This came today a little out of nowhere (talk about mondays) as a push for the last quarter of the year. Please, feel free to bot my characters, replace if I can be waited, whatever you see fit. I hope we get the chance to play again in the future no matter what!
Always wishing you have the most fun,
Lapyd
Carmelia Torvé |
Sorry to see you go, Lapyd. It's up to the GM whether Prasi steps aside or steps away. Thanks for helping us smack a few elementals!
WhtKnt |
I think that we'll let Prasi fade into the crew for a while and if Lapyd returns, we'll reintegrate her. Sound good to everyone? Lapyd, know that you are welcome to return if things ease up.
WhtKnt |
In the meantime, I should have a new post up by Sunday, tops. Sorry for the delay.
Carmelia Torvé |
That works for me.
Carmelia Torvé |
I think we're just waiting on Faengrim right now.
WhtKnt |
Yes. If he doesn't post by tomorrow, I'll bot him.
Carmelia Torvé |
Congrats on winning the race, y'all! At least, I hope all are still here. Haven't heard from Faengrim in a month and a half, and it's been about 3 weeks for Dantes. With Prasi (and Navasi) gone, it's increasingly looking like just Chumtooth and Carmelia. Has anyone reached out to those two?
In the meantime, maybe Chumtooth and Carmelia can have a downtime sit down to discuss the race.

Taking another level in Shaman!
Deep Shaman 8/Executioner Slayer 2
HP: 69 + 1d8 + 2 ⇒ 69 + (7) + 2 = 78
BAB +1 = 8
Skills +7 (4 (Class) + 0 (Int) + 2 (BG) + 1 (FCB)
- Disable Device +2 = 18
- Heal +2 = 25
- Knowledge (planes) + 1 = 12
- Profession (sailor) +2 = 16
Spells/Day: Level 3 +1; Level 4 +1
Hex: Chant (Su): A shaman can chant as a move action. Any creature that is within 30 feet that is under the effects of the shaman’s charm, evil eye, fortune, fury, or misfortune hex has that effect’s duration extended by 1 round. A shaman cannot select both this hex and the witch’s cackle hex.
Greater Spirit Ability: Fluid Mastery (Su): The shaman gains a swim speed equal to her base land speed, as well as the ability to breathe underwater tremorsense with a range of 30 feet while in the water. In addition, she can unleash a torrent of ice and water from her hands in a 15-foot cone as a standard action. This torrent deals 1d4 points of cold damage per 2 shaman level she possesses, and pushes affected creatures back 5 feet directly away from the shaman. When underwater, the torrent deals 1d6 points of damage per shaman level in a 30-foot cone. A successful Reflex saving throw halves the damage and negates the push. The shaman can use this ability three times per day, but she must wait 1d4 rounds between each use.
Chumtooth |
Chumtooth takes another level in Rogue, making him an even Fighter 5/Rogue 5.
All I get for the level is an extra die of sneak attack damage and 10 skill points, but it's all good.
Hit Point Roll: 1d8 ⇒ 8
I guess we need to confirm the status of the others before dividing the coins.
Carmelia Torvé |
Hey Dantes! Good, so we at least have three.
Chumtooth, I'll probably have Carmelia wake up with a hangover the morning after the race and stumble around to find Chumtooth. Then maybe some fun RP?
Carmelia Torvé |
Good to see you, Dax. If it's because because Chumtooth and Carmelia had a flurry of back-and-forth activity today, then that's just because We haven't had a proper chance to just roleplay for a while. So Cuchulainn and I agreed to do so when we both had a chance. So I hope that wasn't overwhelming to log in to see.
Is there anything we can do to help keep you involved and invested?
Carmelia Torvé |
Okay. So are you saying that you need to step back, or just saying that it's been tough, but you hope to still be able to keep up with us? Real life always takes priority over games, but I want to clarify where you are with no judgment.
Carmelia Torvé |
Great! I'd like that, too. Carmelia hasn't gotten much of a chance to know Dantes or Faengrim yet, and I'd like to.
WhtKnt |
Definitely want you to stay in, if you are able, but don't feel obligated if you need to prioritize, please.
Dantes Goldforge |

That's sort of what I'm waiting on. We did gain a prize purse for winning the race.
Carmelia Torvé |
Earlier this year, we got the Sturdy Hull, Broad Rudder, Silk Sails, and Magically Treated Hull.
That leaves the following upgrades available (in order of cost from lowest to highest):
Concealed Weapon Port, 100 gp
Smuggling Compartments, 500 gp/compartment
Magically Treated Control Device, 1000 gp
Rapid-Deploy Sails, 1000 gp
Ram, 1000 gp
Increased Cargo Capacity, 1500 gp
Wooden Plating, 2000 gp
Additional Crew Quarters, 2000 gp
Armor Plating, 3000 gp
Movable Deck, 4000 gp
Magically Treated Sails, 9000 gp
Then again, rather than these specific upgrades, we might want to get some weapons like cannons or other siege engines. If we go that, we'll need to look for some crew specifically able to fire such weapons, but it might be useful too have options where we're not casting spells from one ship to the other or waiting to be up close. At the very least getting some ballistae seems like a good idea.
Other than that, the magically treated control device might be nice insurance, as would magically treated sails (though the latter is very expensive). Rapid-deploy sails could be handy, though we haven't needed to do much sail adjustments in the game yet. I don't know how much we're tracking cargo capacity (or crew number). A ram is a great idea now, and so is some kind of armor.
Carmelia is a greedy wench, but I think her stats are generally solid right now and I'm happy with how she's been able to support the party. If we decide to split the purse four ways, I'd find something to do with 2,000 gp. But I think we're liable to find some great stuff on the island, whether to use or to sell for things on our individual wish lists.
Carmelia Torvé |
Any ideas? Preferences?
WhtKnt |
I am going to Disney World from tomorrow through the 12th of November. Please stand by and on my return we will continue.
WhtKnt |
Okay, good questions asked by Carmelia in the thread, but I'm answering them here so as not to clutter things up.
This is an awesome scene.
Thank you.
1) Was it really able to do a full-round attack in the surprise round?
Yes, per the AP, it did make a full-round attack in the surprise round.
2) Did anyone of us have an opportunity to attempt a perception check to notice it?
Again, per the adventure, no attempt was possible. I internally struggled with this one, however. In the end, I decided to go with complete surprise mostly for effect.
3) Did it automatically grapple us? My understanding of the Grab special ability is that it still has to make a CMB check against each of us. Similarly, I believe that it still needs to make grapple checks to use a Constrict special ability. I assume that its grapple CMB is insane, but any 1s should still fail.
That may be my error. I thought that a successful attack indicated a grab, but that may not be the case, looking at the link you provided. I will reroll the grapple checks for the officers (I'll let the crew stand, since the likelihood that they will not be grappled is really very low).
4) Can Chumtooth use his bite attack twice in one round? I thought that natural attacks could not be used iteratively.
Again, this may be on me but I can't find anywhere it expressly forbids such, so until someone can find such a reference, we'll let it ride.
Carmelia Torvé |
Thank you for the clear point-by-point explanation! I just wanted to make sure so that we didn't insta-die.
WhtKnt |
No problem. I never mind a player pointing out something I've done wrong. The game should be fair and fun for all involved. If you aren't having fun or feel cheated, then I'm doing something wrong!
Chumtooth |
Carmelia wrote:4) Can Chumtooth use his bite attack twice in one round? I thought that natural attacks could not be used iteratively.Again, this may be on me but I can't find anywhere it expressly forbids such, so until someone can find such a reference, we'll let it ride.
After a bit of digging, it looks like I should have only been able to make one bite attack. Natural weapons can't be used iteratively.
This was my bad. I wrongly assumed that I could bite as many times as I had attacks based on my level. I'll try to remember that this is not the case for future combats, when the situation next arises.
Carmelia Torvé |
It's an obscure rule. Natural attack builds are relatively uncommon, so it's easy to assume that it should be that iteratives are permitted.
With permission, I'd like to nominate the two sailors that Carmelia tapped with water breathing to be the ones to rescue their fellow seabound crewmates while the rest of us get ready to deal with the octopus. Carmelia might want another round or two to buff before we wake it up.
Also, Hap will be staying on the ship and manning (octopussing?) the wheel.
WhtKnt |
I must say that having run this AP twice already, yours is the first crew that has actually decided to try to tame the octopus. It's an interesting thought and a novel idea. If it works, kudos all around! Basically, it will come down to a reaction roll, modified by whatever deals/threats you offer.
Carmelia Torvé |
Go for it, Cap'n. Faengrim has a +13 (and would therefore auto-aid so long as he helps in some way, like translating). Carmelia will attempt to aid as well, probably by demonstrating that she was the one that put the octopus to sleep in the first place and isn't afraid to do it again--or worse. She'll also slap you with a Guidance spell for another +1.
Dantes Goldforge |
I am still here. I am just struggling to find a way to contribute to this particular story element. I think it is amazing to try and bring the octopus onto our side; I just don't have the skills/items/spells to really help out the effort.
Carmelia Torvé |
Feel free to just respond as Dantes, whether you're doing anything mechanical or not.
WhtKnt |
Just gonna say this. I've run this path three times for three different groups and you are the first ones to try taming the octopus!
Chumtooth |
Question: Clearly Faengrim can speak to the octopus, but is it also possible for Carmelia to speak to it through Hap? Is it reasonable to assume that the octopus familiar and the giant octopus both speak Octopus (whatever that might be, linguistically)?
Carmelia Torvé |
No--in taking on the Pilferer archetype, Hap sacrifices the ability to speak to other animals of its kind.
WhtKnt |
Sorry for the unplanned break. I spent the post-Christmas week with my family and just got back today. I will post tomorrow.
Carmelia Torvé |
Hi all. I want to apologize for my extended absence. First things first, I fully intend to keep up with the campaign if you’ll still have me. Second, I’ll offer an explanation. (Posting this to all of my currently active campaigns).
I wish I could say that there was one big thing, but instead it was a lot of small to medium things. Physical and mental health problems, almost 20% of my waking hours spent traveling in the last month and a half, some work-related woes, the stress of the holidays, internet outages, writer’s block, etc. In the few times that I had sufficient time and energy to even look at the Paizo boards, I found myself overwhelmed by the high number of new posts and was experiencing terrific guilt and anxiety about having missed so much. I have been composing this message for a couple of days now, trying to provide a semblance of apology.
And now I am trying to catch up in earnest.
Thank you for your patience with me, especially those who reached out here or on Discord. I tried my best to respond as I was able, but I know I missed some of you.
