Visitors flock to Oppara in the days leading up to the Grand Day of Exaltation. The populace of the city doubles during this time, making Oppara larger than any other city in the Inner Sea region, save Absalom. The self-importance of the already prideful Taldan people swells in equal measure. Street vendors sell traditional Taldan foods—anchovy skewers, anglebobs, canal crossings, clamguards, jubilee pie, honeyflake, long wine, yonder tarts, and more—including regional delicacies from separated provinces such as Andoran mince and Chelish raven cake. Family banners and provincial flags drape the sides of most buildings, with merchants hawking heraldry ranging from replica banners of the old Armies of Exploration to wooden swords and handheld Taldan flags for children. Taverns offer themed drink and food, with varying bars adopting well-known nobles from the long history of the empire as their mascot or self-declared patron.

Alongside all the pomp and circumstance filling Oppara is a noteworthy moment in history: the imperial senate is poised to hold a historic vote to end primogeniture. The potential end of the millennia-standing law of succession is the talk of the town. Streets and taverns are abuzz with conversations; some wish to see the law thrown down to pave a way for Princess Eutropia to ascend to the throne, while hardliners (especially elder nobles) believe the vote to be another wound in the great history of the empire, allowing not only the rabble-rousing Eutropia to inherit family power, but every ill-deserving woman. Regardless of the outcome, both sides of the debate agree that life will go on, and despite the serious ramifications of primogeniture’s potential end, the streets of Oppara hold no signs of unrest during the jubilant celebrations of the Grand Day of Exaltation.

You have cause for additional anticipation: you’ve been engaged by Lady Martella Lotheed, the illegitimate daughter of the prestigious Lotheed noble family and a burgeoning spymaster. She's asked you to function as a covert agent to help ensure the vote "goes the right way." In return, she’s promised you each a payment of 150 gp upon successful completion of your (as yet undisclosed) tasks, in addition to the extraordinary access and prestige granted by attending one of Taldor’s most exclusive and high-profile political events. To assist in your preparation, she’s also offered a 30-gp line of credit at her favorite tailor, Thread Rare, and to loan you enough high-quality costume jewelry to complete your outfit.

It is two days before the Grand Day of Exaltation, and you have been instructed to find your way to an old, charming, but relatively quiet tavern near the Oppara Arena in the bustling Grandbridge district. It is there you will meet with Martell and your peers to learn more about what specifically is being asked of you and meet the rest of the crew.

The tavern is easily found, and upon entering, you spot Martella immediately. As the first party member enters, she looks up from the thick book in front of her and smiles widely, gesturing towards the open chairs at her table.

Let the adventure begin!

Genevieve arrives at the tavern exactly on time. While the offer of borrowed clothing is tempting, it would not due for a Noblewoman such as herself to be seen in anything as threadbare as an outfit worth less than 100 gold!

Gen sighs as she looks upon the tavern, she feels naked these days without lugging her spellbook everywhere she goes the smell of components for spells has been washed away leaving her smelling of lavender and lilac instead. The spells in her memory, no she is a wizard not a sorcerer thank you very much, are jumbled as always. No doubt if she were forced to cast the magic released would be the same that is always released. These duties of her House are what have prevented her from improving in her arcane studies she knows it and she suspects her parents are quite happy about that. Just the thought of it makes her pout.

Up her thigh is her favorite dagger, one with no crest to readily identify her or her family in case it must be utilized and left behind, one simply does not walk the streets completely unguarded with this many strangers in town and bringing her own House guards on a "secret" mission would make her attempts at discretion not at all discreet.

She wears her mother's best pearls and her own electrum ring with words of power written in Abyssal, a language she has taken a liking to, perhaps because it scandalizes her religious parents so!

She smooths out her face and puts on a winning smile entering the tavern and looks around to ensure that no one followed her. Though she maybe should of thought of that several blocks ago...

Shrugging and seeing no one, Gen enters. This will either be the start of a new opportunity or simply one wonderful night but at least it will be better than the monotony of the daily bureaucracy, Brigh knows she would prefer anything to that, well, almost.

By late morning Amandine has prepared the flat for her absence. Mostly that means buying a few extra groceries for the larder, and leaving a few coin for Calix. Her younger brother probably won't need the extra, she expects to be back by early the next day at latest. But, this will be a new kind of work, and she doesn't precisely know what to expect of Lady Lotheed.

Early afternoon is a quick visit to the tailor shop to pick up her new dress, then back home to make sure her kit for the evening is gathered and ready. Finally, she spends a few minutes sharing a snack with Calix.

She dresses and leaves for the cafe designated by Lady Lotheed plenty early. She doesn't want to be late of course, but she also hopes to be first. It would soothe her nerves to be able to observe the place for a little while before going in.

Of course Amandine has been enquiring about Lotheed here and there where she knows a person or two for a couple of days beforehand. She doesn't like not knowing who exactly knows enough about her to offer a job so suddenly, and she wants to amend that right away.

Amandine lingers across and slightly up the street from the café. She has no difficulty spotting Martella Lotheed as she arrives. Amandine has a composite description supplied by friends and it’s a good match. Lady Lotheed arrives alone, which Amandine notes. She waits a little longer, using up the rest of her extra time before the meeting, to see who else might be coming and going from the café. There are several people doing one or the other and it suggests nothing to Amandine. It’s a good practice though. A couple of minutes before she goes in, she sees Lady
Genevieve Merosett enter. That probably answers a few questions.

When Amandine enters the café and spots Martella Lotheed’s table and sees Lady Genevieve Merosett there as well. She lifts a hand in greeting when Lady Lotheed notices her, and walks to her table.

The young woman who arrives at the table is obviously half-elven. Her brown hair is cropped to well above her shoulders and it, along with her elven features and a trace of freckles on her face and cheeks, gives her a pixieish air. She is smiling warmly. As she glances from one person at the table to the other her brown eyes seem clever, as if they are memorizing the details of them both.

She wears a deep green dress with black accents. It is a relatively simple affair by Taldan standards, but the clean lines flatter her slender figure. She wears a rapier, which is not held by a belt, but a rope-thick braided and looped silk cord sewn directly to the dress. She also carries a small satchel-like handbag.

With a hint of a curtsy she says ”It is my great honor to meet you Lady Lotheed. Amandine Santon at your service." Turning her gaze the other young woman, she greets her as well. "I'm pleasantly surprised to see you here Lady Genevieve."

Amandine settles herself at the table and requests coffee with cream.

The young lady Clement set about preparing herself for the meeting. She awoke early at her parent’s home, had a warm bath drawn for her and rifled through her closet for something suitable. I have my own tailors, thank you very much, she thought as she picked out a dark green dress, quite the accent to her stunning emerald bracelet she was gifted for completing her noble studies. She tucked her holy symbol of the Eternal Rose into her pocket. It didn’t exactly match, but she would have felt naked without it.

Trudeau stared at her ceremonial armor polished to a bright gleam, but figured that would be overkill for a meeting such as this. If she didn’t trust the woman, she didn’t plan on staying long. She did pick up her glaive, admiring the beauty of the weapon as she picked it up. As she expected this to be a short mission, she didn’t pack anything else, figuring she’d have time to return and prepare before anything of substance happened.

She strolled to the meeting site, singing a jaunty tune about the golden pillars of Oppara under her breath as she walked. At the site of the three woman looking around conspiratorially, she knew she’d found her place.

”Greeting, ladies. The pleasure is all mine. I am Trudeau from House Clement. I assume I have the right place?”. The dark haired and skinned woman cut a swath of green from her dress to her shiny emerald bubble on her arm. She waited briefly for a response before taking an open chair, left hand on her glaive.

’A hat, perchance I will order a hat. But what sort, I don’t want to cover to much of my beautiful hair.’ Running a comb though his gleaming black locks, Kunala stands half dressed in front of the small mirror. Looking closer. ’OH my, I hope Martella, I wonder if she would mind me calling her Martella, well, I hope she doesn’t notice the bags under my eyes. I shouldn’t have stayed at the party so late last night, but we only celebrate ‘the Grand Day of Exaltation.’ Once a year.’ Smiling in the mirror, ’Not that I need an excuse to stay late at a party.’ Finished with his hair, Kunala brushes off his kidskin, double-breasted, jacket hoping to remove the wrinkles. ’I hope this doesn’t look like I slept in it.’ donning the rest of his outfit he lifts his sword belt off of the bed post and straps it on. Exiting the small attic room he passes through the dance studio now empty of students due to the holiday; he exits out into the Senate's Hill District of Oppara. Forgive the introduction, I ‘m still playing with the personality a little.

Now
Entering the Tavern almost on time, Kunala moves through the doorway, quickly stepping to the side of the door, staying near the wall. As his eyes adjust to the dim lit room, he looks around taking the room in at a glance. When he sees Lady Martella his countenance changes, he smiles and waves, popping the last morsel from the anchovy skewer he was eating in his mouth. Instead of going straight to the table, he glides to the bar, placing a coin on the counter he acquires a glass of liquid from the barmaid. Moving gracefully across the room he nears the table with the four ladies seated at it.

A goblet of wine in one hand, the wooden skewer from the anchovy street vender in the other. He flourishes the skewer, extending his right leg out and giving a sweeping bow. ”Lady Martella, it ith tho good to thee you again.”

He looks at the other women; first making eye contact with the long limbed half elf, raising an eyebrow. He quickly turns and looking from the blond well dressed girl in pearls to the tall dark haired, dark skinned priestess. He points the skewer first at one then the other, opening his mouth as if to say more, he decides against it. Tossing the skewer over his shoulder, he shifts his six foot frame slightly, straightening his frumpy jacket. Then moving to the empty chair facing towards the door, he sets the goblet on the table and takes a seat explaining himself. ”I apologithe for being late, But being a holiday it ith tho tempting to thtop and try all the different morthals that the venders are thelling.”

As the others gather at the table, Gen in her sky blue silk dress approaches, she has her hair down for the event, normally she would have it up but well, she just didn't feel like it tonight. For a night of intrigue she should not look like her normal self, at least, that's what she thinks.

"Kunala, Amandine, a pleasure to see you both". She smiles at Trudeau, "I am afraid I ave never had the pleasure of your company before", she states before eyeing Lady Martella Lotheed. She approaches her with a soft touch hug and a light kiss on both cheeks, "My Lady, thank you so very much for your invitation. It has been too long".

Gen takes a seat at the table next to Amandine.

"Oh Genevieve, I'm delighted you've arrived," Martella says warmly. "Please, have a seat. Would you like anything to drink? I'd normally offer something to eat, but there's nothing here that I'm sure would be up to your normal standards. They do have a lovely honey ale that...oh, excellent!" Martella interrupts herself mid-sentence to welcome the next arrival.

"Ah, yes. I thought you two might be acquainted," she says. "Despite how big this city is, it's remarkable how many people know one another. It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person, Amadine. And Genevieve, thank you for accepting the invitation. It has been too long. I'll take the blame for that - as you'll soon hear, there's been quite a bit occupying my time."

Upon Trudeau's arrival Martella rises in greeting. "You do indeed have the correct place, Trudeau. I'm glad you've arrived - it's little surprise that the ladies are on time, but we are all too familiar with waiting on our masculine peers, are we not?" She adds with a wink.

Almost as if on cue, Kunala sweeps into the room. "Aha - he's earlier than I anticipated after last night's dalliances" she says to the three of you. As Kunala approaches the table and bows, she returns the gesture and smiles warmly. "Kunala, it is always a pleasure. I am glad you patronized our local vendors - their offerings are far better than what's available in this establishment. I trust you successfully celebrated last evening?" she says playfully.

Grand Day of Exaltation
The Grand Day of Exaltation is the one day every year when the emperor can elevate a commoner of unusual skill or service to the ranks of nobility.

Because people travel from all over the empire to witness the exaltation, many balls and political events take place in the preceding week, and the senate usually votes on matters of national importance immediately beforehand.

This year’s noble-to-be is a wide-eyed weaver from the village of Breezy Creek, whose beautiful tapestries have adorned the royal palace and many other royal homes for a decade.

Prince Stavian III
Grand Prince Stavian III is the emperor of Taldor.

Grand Prince Stavian III has no male heir, and he has refused to have any further children since the tragic death of his only son, Carrius, in a riding accident 20 years ago. With the emperor getting on in years, some people worry how this will affect succession.

The emperor has made no secret of his disdain for Princess Eutropia’s social crusades, especially her efforts to overturn primogeniture so she can inherit the throne, but he has been uncharacteristically quiet about it this past year. Rumors abound that his health is slipping and he has accepted her efforts.

Martella Lotheed
The wealthy Lotheed family has been a strong supporter of the Stavians for almost 100 years. They have a long family tradition of arcane magic, adding to their wealth and prestige.

Martella is the black sheep of her family, being a result of an extramarital dalliance with a Qadiran diplomat. She lacks her family’s gift for magic as well, adding to their resentment.

Despite her family’s disdain, Martella still commands some wealth and has extensive contacts, having attended the Sinora Academia, Taldor’s most exclusive girls’ school.

Princess Eutropia
Princess Eutropia is the adult daughter of Grand Prince Stavian III and has a scandalous reputation for making trouble and fighting in the streets.

Eutropia is a social reformer, eager to establish schools and other public resources for the poor, and remove political or family restrictions for women and various minorities. Rumors have circulated for a decade that her ultimate goal is to overturn primogeniture—Taldor’s ancient law stating that only male heirs may inherit the Lion Throne—and become the first empress of Taldor.

The princess’s reputation for “fighting in the streets” largely hails from her skill as a fencer, a sport she excelled at during her schooling at the Sinora Academia. Many times in her twenties she matched blades with chauvinistic politicians who would otherwise refuse to let her speak or act within political circles, and those early public duels helped her win unexpected support for her later social reforms—as well as a reputation as an impolite, unladylike brute.

I'm not sure what you were aiming for with the Diplomacy roll. What'd you have in mind there?

Almost as if waiting on cue for Genevieve's question about the number of compatriots, an absolutely beautiful young man of obvious Katapeshi descent enters the room.

He has eschewed a noble's outfit from among his own people for a tailored courtier's outfit cut in the current style of the Taldan court, with just the right amount of jewelry to be appropriate, including a signet ring.

While none of you have ever had the pleasure of his company, he is rather well known among the nobility of Taldir: Indir Ar'Dayne, rumored to be the illegitimate child of one of the Pactmasters of Katapesh. Much of what is known about him is hearsay at best, which only adds to his mystique.

Seeing Lady Martella, he waves exuberantly and makes his way over to the table, saying "Lady Martella, I daresay it has been far too long! and I see you have surrounded yourself with the very jewels of the empire itself!"

Bowing to the group, Indir says "Greetings all. My name is Indir Ar'Dayne, and I am humbled to make your acquaintance." before taking a seat next to Lady Martella.

Lucius did not hurry as he gazed into the mirror. It had become a ritual for him before he ever left the darkened manor house.

The ears area dead giveaway. Hide them.
He turned his head several times, making sure his beret and hair hid his elven features. The servants had all left when the deeds and wealth had been seized so he was forced to make sure there were no mistakes now.

Stand straight, eyes down, neutral but acknowledging expression. You are of a noble house now. Act like it.
His gaze went to the two piles of clothes that lay in the room. One was for times of war. The other much more formal and befitting his new station. He gazed at the letter of correspondence he'd received from Lady Martella.

"I shouldn't waste her hospitality. I'll need to look every bit the part just as much as act like it."
He grabbed the latter of the two piles. He needed to head to the Grandbridge district soon. But first, he would stop at Thread Rare to complete his attire.

Lucius finally arrived at the appointed tavern. Now fully dressed in fine Taldan style clothing, he'd chosen the coloration of light green and dark blue to match the patriots of Andor itself.

He glanced around looking at the gathered group before him with an apologetic smile.
"It seems I've arrived late. Hopefully I haven't missed too much. Lucius of House Praetor." he finished with a slight nod of his head.

"Oh Indir," Martella says, standing. "Welcome! These 'jewels' are ladies Trudeau Clement, Amandine Santon and Genevieve Ree Merosett and Mr. Kunala Var...Kunala. Mr. Kunala." She returns to her seat, turning to Indir when he takes his place next to her. "I trust you had no trouble finding the place? I have to confess - I'm a bit surprised you came. I have heard rumors, but even my sources have failed to uncover anything concrete of your past OR present."

Before you have a chance to respond, the final member of the group arrives. "Oh no, Lucius. You're not late at all. Not a bit. We've all only just recently arrived."

Once everyone is settled and hydrated, Martella returns her book to her satchel and withdraws a hand-sized, brass cricket, placing it on the table. She seems to squeeze it and a soft buzzing sound can be heard. "I'd like for us to speak candidly. This little gadget will ensure we maintain our privacy. I am beyond thrilled that all of you have shown up tonight - and so promptly. As you're aware, in two days' time, the future of our nation will finally take a step forward or remain stuck and stagnant. I am a part of a large contingent eager to see the former realized. We are quite confident that we have the votes necessary, but one can never be too careful. That is why you are here."

She leans in conspiratorially. "As I stated in my letter to each of you, there are several tasks I need your assistance with. Each one shall be handled by each of you - and you will be able to choose the one that best suits your talents. I'll take care of the one you don't choose."

"Firstly, I need someone to serve as an aide, running messages between our allied senators. This isn't a difficult task, but it is time-consuming and will require someone with stamina and grit."

This task requires successful Escape Artist or combat maneuver checks.

"Second, I need someone to help uncover the loyalty of two specific senators. I despise loose ends, and we don't know how these two will vote. I'll need someone able to set the senators at ease and discern their honest opinions."

This task requires successful Sense Motive or Perception and influence checks.

"Next, I'd like to discredit a few of the senators backing primogeniture. We know we won't be able to win them over, but they have considerable influence and this will undermine their authority after the vote."

This task requires successful Sense Motive checks or coordinating with another PC and Bluff or Lingusitics checks.

"There is a certain senator who has wavered in his loyalty to our cause. While I believe he'll still vote with us, I'd like to ensure he stays reliable in the foreseeable future."

This task requires successful influence or intimidation checks.

"I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't above petty revenge. There are some outspoken senators who simply need to be put in their place. In this case, it is my half-brothers. I'd like to spoil a party they're hosting."

This task requires successful Appraise, Knowledge (nobility) and/or Disable Device checks.

"I'd like to keep my eye on some specific rivals and stay in the know if their tactics shift. This requires a keen eye, and the ability to remain unobtrusive."

This task requires successful Perception or Sense Motive and Stealth or Disguise checks.

"Lastly, I'd like to undermine an additional rival by stealing some of the artifacts he has donated to the senate. You may keep the artifacts - I merely wish to see them disappear."

This task requires successful Sleight of Hand checks.

She takes a deep breath. "Whew. That's it. Feel free to ask any questions you may have before selecting, and once you choose, I'll hand over more specific details."

Amandine answers Genevieve with a quick, furtive smile. It's as I figured then. She has pulled me into this, whatever it is.

She adds a small glass of dessert wine to the coffee she already has. She's not at all opposed to drinking, but she doesn't want to blunt her concentration at the moment. On the other hand, everyone else is having something fortified and she doesn't want to stand out.

As the other's chat while waiting for everyone to arrive, Amandine mostly remains quiet unless spoken to or to introduce herself. Partially this is because she has no similar background or experiences to share, so there's relatively little for her to contribute. Partially it is because she doesn't plan for these things to remain impediments for long.

She's never seen casual chat among people of this type before. She watches them carefully and listens, making note of what they discuss, and how they discuss those subjects.

She is also exercising patience of course. She is very curious about why exactly they have been gathered by Lady Lotheed. But she knows certain social forms need to be seen to first, so she waits for them to play through without rushing to ask questions.

The woman who is obviously a Shelynite priestess encourages Amandine. She knows Lady Lotheed is on the outs with her family, and Lady Genevieve can fairly be described as....erratic. The priestess, Lady Trudeau may be a steadying influence and keep things from going anywhere too terribly foolish or dangerous.

As for the man Kunala, he is very good looking, tempered by his lisp, which makes him cute. Something about him reminds Amandine of her father though, not a good thing at all.

Indir Ar'Dayne consumes most of Amandine's attention. As soon as he arrives she feels... something, which is hard to describe. It's not exactly a tremor or a buzzing, more like a memory of those things, there but not really there. This has happened before on a few occasions with people, some kind of "extra" they signaled in her head. Two of them she has actually met, both customers at the bookstore. One was nothing more than the ping, like Indir gives her. The other one was an older man, almost elderly, who would almost overwhelm her with this feeling. She was afraid of him in the way one is afraid the first time one sees the ocean up close. The vastness of it makes its power obvious, but also too great to completely comprehend. She never knew if any of those people felt something similar from her. She avoids eye contact with Indir, not wanting to give herself away if she hasn't already. Interesting...

The last man to arrive seems a little uncomfortable, but otherwise unremarkable.

No harm in it, not like it’s hard to find out who I am.’ As Martella introduces Indir to those seated at the table Kuanla stands, extending his hand first to Indir and then Lucius, making eye contact with each in turn. ”Oh Pleathe Martella, Jutht Kunala, my grandfather was Mr. Varima, my father captain Varima, My ethtranged great uncle ith Count Varima. I am jutht Kunala, dancer, dueler and black sheep.” if either shakes Kunala’s hand they will notice that the ‘dancer’ has a firm grip.

now
’Interesting device…I knew Martella had a lot of irons in the fire, but this is impressive. it looks like a good group, all young and wanting change… hhhmmmm, Clements won’t tolerate fools, need to watch how much I pile it on with her then. But I would like to go to that party with her…Mistress Merosett can certainly handle the senator, unless I miss my guess. Hhhmmm Santon, was it? That was a good observation. She’s right we should double up on some stuff.’ Watching and listening, occasionally making a show of sipping from his wine glass, but only taking in a small amount. After dabbing his mouth with a silk hanky that he has produced from the sleeve of his frumpy jacket. He nods in agreement with Amandine Santon, making eye contact with the intelligent woman. ”Our lovely half elf ith correct, if we double up we can watch each others backth, tho to thpeak.” He smiles, resisting the urge to wink at anyone in particular, ”Or bottomth if you prefer." Waiving the silk hanky before he places it back in the sleeve. "Anyway, Mathter Dethtrie hath cleared my thchedule tho I am completely at your dithpothal. Tho I can certainly run methages for you Mithtreth Martella." His eye's light up, and he unconsciously twists the tip of his mustachio "But with your permission, I would love to accompany Mithtreth Clement and Mithtreth Thanton to your brother’th party.”

Kulala should be able to handle combat maneuver checks for the first task, as for the party, he just wants to go to a party....

"I believe that dear Lady Martella wishes each of us to pick one of these tasks, likely to see how well we'll perform. I will be happy to deal with the issue of the uncertain senators' loyalties."

If anyone has Sleight of Hand, we might wanna grab the artifacts, since it sounds like they might be stuff we can use/sell.

At first, Lucius, was tense about meeting the group of people who sat around the table, despite the assurances of their host. When Kunala introduced himself as an outcast, the tension lessened. He met the man's handshake and was surprised by the strength.

As the others listened to Martella outline the plan, he kept note of the tasks he thought he could achieve but he was distracted by the presence of the brown haired Half-Elf woman.

I wonder if she's here because she wants to change things like me?

"I agree, it would be a better use of our time if we focused on dealing with as many of these tasks as we can unless it can't be avoided.

I'll see about uncovering the true loyalties and thoughts of the two loose ends.

What are their names and what parts of the city would I likely be able to find them? Also, Martella, I can't imagine a stranger approaching them out of the blue and asking them what their preference would be is going to be easy. Any other details you might happen to know would be helpful?"

"I'm glad to see such eagerness for cooperation!" Martella says, beaming. "It's perfectly fine for you to assist one another, but I'd like each of you to take responsibility for one task. Most of them shouldn't take more than a few minutes, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the party, make connections, and learn more about our dear senators."

In response to Amadine: "Well, the best insurance is not getting caught," she says with a wink. "But of course, we do have friends responsible for guarding the party. Should you get caught, you won't face serious legal consequences. It will be quite embarrassing for you - and me - so let's just avoid that if we can, yes?"

In response to Lucius: "We're interested in Duke Centimus and Countess Abrielle Pace. All of the senators will be gathered at the Exaltation gala in two days time. All of the tasks will be completed then. And due to the nature of the gathering - and the number in attendance - a stranger approaching and discussing the most-pressing issue of the day won't be out of place at all. I'd just make sure you are as charming as possible, so as not to give away your stance on the issue."

So if I understand it correctly, here's what's you've all taken responsibility for (these are in the order presented originally):
Delivering Messages - Kunala (Note - this is the most time-consuming task. You should still have time to enjoy the festivities, but you'll have less than others.)
Uncovering Loyalties - Indir or Lucius
Undermining Senators - Unclaimed
Politicking the Senator - Genevieve
Sabotaging the Party - Trudeau
Spying on Senators - Unclaimed
Stealing Artifacts - Amandine

Lucius nodded thoughtfully. "I see. Being as charming as we can huh? What about the opposing senators then? It may actually be best if I were keeping an eye on your rivals to see if they do anything unexpected."

I had misinterpreted what Indir meant earlier. I would like to change what I'm doing to spy on the rival senators.

Trudeau listened while the others considered their selections and their strong suits. ”Tell me more about this party your kin is throwing. I’d like to have a picture in my mind of the scene. Where is it held? Is the building pretty? Or is it old, bare and glum? Are they good at entertaining? Do you think they’ll have any pretty decorations?”. Tru was already picturing a pretty piece of the decor in her hair...maybe a flower or something similar.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Trudeau, the party will be a snobbish affair - so elite that even I wasn't able to secure us an invite. As such, you won't be attending the party. Instead, you'll be heading to the servant area to locate and sabotage an expensive, rare bottle of wine they've secured as their 'prize offering' for the evening. If there's another task you'd prefer to tackle, I'd understand."

She turns to the group at large, looking you each in the eye as she speaks. "I have no doubts about your ability to complete these tasks. You've each been chosen for both your abilities, as well as your spoken or unspoken devotion to our esteemed nation. I'll hand over a bit more information about each mission, but then I must be off. Feel free to stay and chat and get to know one another - I am certain, that despite our impending victory, there will be quite a bit more work ahead of us."

She slides small scraps of parchment across the table to each of you.

Kunala:

You see the following scrawled in neat handwriting: I have legitimate needs for a senatorial aide to serve as both a cover for my other false aides and to run communications between allied politicians. This is shouldn't be a difficult task, but it will be the most time-consuming, requiring you to run messages between various politicians.

Navigating the crowded senate floor to deliver messages quickly requires you to be nimble or forceful. As you deliver the messages, you'll have to wait for the reply and then deliver a follow-up message. Despite all this running back and forth, you should still have plenty of time to enjoy the festivities.

Indir:

You see the following scrawled in neat handwriting: I am confident we have gathered the votes necessary, but I despise loose ends. Please uncover the true dedication of two senators: Duke Centimus and Countess Abrielle Pace. It is unknown if either supports the bid to end primogeniture, and while their votes will be apparent after the senate convenes, I'd prefer to discover their positions in advance, as well as the reasons each noble holds their position.

Divining each noble’s motivations will require you to successfully read the motives of the individual or perceive any giveaways. This can only be done once you or one of your peers has put the noble at ease.

Gen:

You see the following scrawled in neat handwriting: My orchestrations have swayed a great number of reluctant senators, and I require a vast web of influence to maintain that. To that end, I would like you to make a strong impression on Baron Nicolaus Okerra and remind him of certain debts he owes me. While Baron Nicolaus Okerra isn’t a senator, his war record and general popularity make him an influential figure—one whose reputation helped sway a number of otherwise neutral votes.

You can accomplish this task by successfully charming the baron, or through intimidation. I will say the latter will prove quite a bit more difficult, but shouldn't be impossible.

I didn't realize the person you were attempting to Politick wasn't a senator - my apologies for not reading better!

Trudeau (assuming you keep the mission):

You see the following scrawled in neat handwriting: Some people are too powerful - or in this case, stubborn - for us to influence their votes, but that doesn’t mean we can't enjoy some petty revenge. I would like to exact some retribution against my admittedly - and temporarily - more powerful half-brothers, who have contributed a large bottle of rare, 150-year-old red wine from my family's holdings in the Opparos province. I will provide a single syringe filled with a putrefying agent to render the wine embarrassingly undrinkable. You musn't steal the bottle and you must conceal any signs of tampering; it needs to be drunk at dinner and appear to be of terrible quality or - perhaps even more scandalously - a forgery.

You'll have to to recognize the correct bottle in the crowded kitchen, and then inject the putrefying agent without leaving any trace of tampering.

Lucius:

You see the following scrawled in neat handwriting: I need someone to keep tabs on my political rivals and update me if they alter their tactics. There is one who I most notably want to keep an eye on: High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus. You must stay close to the military commander, watching for unusual behavior or listening for snippets of conversation, and warn me if he takes any unusual actions, all while remaining unobtrusive.

You'll have to be perceptive and pay attention to any verbal and non-verbal cues, and you must be relatively close while remaining unnoticed.

Amandine:

You see the following scrawled in neat handwriting: To further undermine the influence of the recently disgraced Earl Calhadion Vernisant, I would like to see some of the historical artifacts that the earl donated to the senate vanish from the Arcade of Triumphs before it is unveiled prior to the evening’s vote. You're free to keep the items; I wishes only for their disappearance to further embarrass Earl Vernisant and his allies. The artifacts won't be secured, as the senate assumes anyone sophisticated enough to attended this crowded gala would never dream of stealing anything on public display. Their folly is our gain.

There are five items that will be on display: a buckler, a dagger, a fan, a journal, and a spyglass. Only three will need to go missing to cause embarrassment. There will be plenty of distractions around you, but you will want to ensure you're unseen as you stow these items - it would be quite embarrassing to get caught. You shouldn't have any real trouble - we have guards in our pocket - but please don't get caught.

Seeing that you each have your task, she nods and stands. "Let's reconvene in two days time - after you've had a chance to secure any additional equipment or clothing you'd like for the Gala. Meet me at the Flaming Magnolia Cafe, two blocks from the Senate Building an hour before the Exaltation Gala begins. I wish you well and I'll see you soon." She stows the cricket in her satchel and says with a wry smile, "Keep the conversation light now."

With that, she pats Indir on the shoulder and heads out of the tavern.

I won't always railroad or provide such little time for interaction with NPCs - this first bit was just to get the adventure rolling. Feel free to interact as you'd like, and then describe any preparations you'd make before the meet up in two days' time!

As the group began to disperse Lucius walked away from the quiet, charming, tavern. An easy smile on his face as he casually passed others by and reached into his pouch again. His mind abuzz with various thoughts.

So those are the people I'll be working with. Trudeau was certainly pleasant enough. Then there was Genevieve, she was cordial enough. Amandine though... she was intense. Did she notice I wonder? He looked down at himself.

Perhaps I shouldn't have dressed up like this. It'll all be backwards for them later. I'll have to correct that.

"I am indeed from the great nation of Katapesh." says Indir with a sitting bow and flourish of his hands.

"As to my trip here, it's a rather sad affair. I was coming both as to secure certain trade agreements and to see a bit of the world, as my father instructed. Near the city, my caravan was ambushed by a veritable horde of Orcs, wielding a variety of lethal looking weapons. Though they suffered many losses, in the end the Orcs were triumphant. My personal guard captain managed to spirit me away, though we were chased for what seemed to be days on end. Near this very city, several of these savage beasts caught up to us. My guard captain, Mustaffa, gave his life to hold them off and buy me time to escape. Surely he is with the gods even now! I was offered charity by one of the noble families in your fine nation, and I have done what I can to repay those who share their home with me with stories and my astute political mind.
Someday, my hope is to be able to return home, but for now I am forced to rely on the kindess of others. I am here to try and pay back such kindness, in even a small way."
Indir beams a smile at Lady Martella.

Taking 10 on bluff for a 20.

"But come, let us focus on happier times. I believe we have intrigue to be about, and not a moment to waste! Perhaps we should meet in the evening to see how our individual efforts faired, and plan for tomorrow's outing? Assuming that is acceptable, let us plan to meet here at 3 bells after dark to plan."

Later:

Let's start with Knowledge: Nobility to see if I know where either of these two Senators spend their off time:

Indir:

You notice Martella's head tip almost imperceptibly to the side after your story is complete - it seems she knows you've mislead the group, but is also unconcerned with correcting you.

Gen:

Nah - no need. I'll give a summary of how it works. They streamlined things a little for this AP, for the better, I think.

The Day of The Gala
The day is finally here. You spent the preceding days working or preparing for tonight's festivities. But all of your anticipation and groundwork has lead you to this moment. As you were instructed, you've all made your way to the appointed spot one hour before the Gala beings.

Long, golden beams of the setting sun dance through the cafe’s smoky interior, highlighting breads, cheeses, and wine bottles behind the only counter. Martella sips casually from a steaming mug, dressed in an elegant but reserved gown—at least by Taldan standards. The familiar hand-sized brass cricket buzzes quietly on the tabletop beside her.

“I’m so pleased you could join me this evening,” she begins. “Please order whatever you like; the fig jam is particularly lovely here. And feel free to speak candidly.” she adds, nodding to the brass insect on the table.

After the food is ordered and pleasantries exchanged, she withdraws a small pouch from her belt and withdraws seven brooches. She hands one to each of you. "Please pin this badge to your chest," she says, pinning one - which is slightly larger and more ornate - to her jerkin. " The badges once belonged to the staff of the long-dead Senator Voritas, whose family line was involved in the senate for nearly a thousand years before dying out about a century ago. Senators and other politicians of note traditionally hand out badges like these to guests they invite to events, identifying them at a glance as guests rather than sitting senators or staff. This means no one will question your presence at tonight's affair."

"But in addition to their historic and symbolic value, they shall prove quite useful. You see, your badges are attuned to mine, allowing us to communicate freely throughout the evening. I'll be able to send telepathic messages to you, and in return, you'll have one minute to respond in kind."

"I will spend the evening in the senate gallery should you need me - but now is the best time to ask any questions that require clarification regarding your tasks. Do you need any additional information?"

Once Martella feels confident you know what to do, she says the following (just trying to keep things moving):

"Overall, tonight promises to be a historic evening, but an evening of work nonetheless. And in the sort of work you’re embarking upon, the line that divides success and failure is drawn by the people you know. You have your own tasks to accomplish, but I’m counting on you to support one another to ensure success and discretion. If you need assistance, kindly ask for it. If your assistance is required, give it. And if I’m to be blunt, I would like just once in my adult life to simply enjoy a gala I attend, rather than scamper about with clandestine busywork. If you all complete your work without need of me to clean anything up, I will happily double my promised fee," she says with a smile. It's clear she's not too intense about this last request, but quite serious about her promise of pay.

"To further aid in tonight's tasks, I've procured several items," she says, withdrawing another pouch from her belt. She looks around the cafe briefly before spilling the contents onto the table. "Please divide these as needed."

The items are two vials of Liquid Blade, eight smoke pellets, a single dose of Soul Stimulant, and two vials of Dust of Illusion

“I trust your activities won’t occupy your entire evening, so by all means, enjoy the party and make friends. This is an excellent opportunity for you to begin your own political ambitions, but do be discreet. Well then, shall we be off?”

Wow, the board didn't show me any updates in gameplay since my last post. Several days worth of posts sitting here unknown to me!

Amandine also agrees with a smile when Kunala asks to accompany Genevieve and herself.

Not only does Indir give Amandine the particular and unusual feeling she's felt only very rarely before, but she doesn't find his short autobiography very believable. Something is off with him. His story about his past is an unforced error. Whatever he's concealing or lying about, he did not need to say so much about himself that he had to do it. He bears watching for sure.

Purchasing her wig with Genevieve and Kunala turns out to be excellent fun. Genevieve's spontaneity and brashness makes for a mirthful show. Kunala is easy to be around and very likable. Amandine decides the thing about him though is yes, he is a scoundrel in the mold of her father.

Amandine decides on a wig with the hair done up in a less ornate style than most. She doesn't want her wig to unduly outstrip her fairly simple dress design. She opts to go honey blonde.

Gen is loud and fun, cracking jokes of a sexual and non-sexual nature. It seems the places they go all of the girls working the boutiques know her as she has a story to relate to each one and a story to share about each one.

She is certainly fun but a bit manic as well, she never throws any sort of wild tantrum but she is brash and you could see her being exhausting to be with day in and day out. How she gets along as a bureaucrat is perhaps the biggest mystery about her!

The Gala

Gen wears a dress similar in style to the one worn at the group's last meeting but this time the colors match those of the Taldoran flag. It is conservative isn that it does not reveal bosom but quite tight in that it shows she has curve sin all the right places. Upon her finger is the same exquisite electrum ring, the pearls are around her neck and this time a diamond bracelet around the wrist opposite from the ring finger.

Upon her head is a wig in an updo of a color lighter than her normal hair, stark platinum blonde. Her make-up is dark in colors around her eyes giving her a mysterious smoky eyed look.

"Of course Lady Martella, we will only bother you with the most important of news such as the best cheese at the table or the most handsome serving lad", she giggles and pins the badge on her chest.

---

As the team breaks off into groups to handle their appointed tasks, Gen seeks out an area of the Gala where Baron Nicolaus Okerra is located. She begins by working the crowd in praising the record of the Taldoran military, especially the accomplishments of one Baron Nicolaus Okerra, she tries to make sure her back is to him and close enough that she cannot see him and that he overhears her singing his praises. She wants him to notice her and approach, not the other way around. She also wants to make it seem incidental that she mentioned him by name not that she called him out because he was nearby.

She lifts her glass and makes a toast, "To the heroes of Taldor, the men and women, but especially men, who shed their blood for our great nation to stand for a millennia. May it stand for another millennia and a thousand after that.

Indeed, it is men, great men like Baron Okerra whose bravery and honor do us in the present day honor and so too do his works honor our ancestors. Both those remembered in songs and forgotten in the mists of the past".

Tru chooses a crimson gown this time. She again carries her holy symbol and wears the emerald bracelet, that she clearly loved so much. She regretted leaving her armor and glaive behind, but rules were rules.

As she listened to Marcella, she smiled at hearing the purpose behind her ever present brass cricket. Nice to be able to say what we need without worrying, she thinks to herself.

When presented with the badge, she takes one and pins it to her gown. Since she was without her weapon, she took a liquid blade and a smoke pellet, for emergencies. ”Mich appreciated. Hopefully neither of these will be needed,” she smiled.

During the time after the first meeting with Lady Martella, Amandine spends considerable time thinking about the logistics of removing the artifacts from their resting places during the Gala. The next morning she takes her dress back to Thread Rare and has two deep pockets sewn into the skirt in such a way that the openings are concealed by the skirt's folds.

She also has two large leather straps sewn at the ends vertically and parallel to each other on one interior side of her purse.

As Lady Martella goes through her final instructions at the cafe, Amandine tries to eat a little something, but finds it difficult. She's beginning to feel a little on edge, something akin to stage fright. She is wearing the same dark green dress as before, and sort of hoping nobody at the table really notices. It's the only fine one she has, and she had assumed she was supposed to wear it to the previous meeting, not expecting there would be two before their assignment began.

To keep herself distracted from the butterflies in her stomach, she concentrates on the strange weight of the wig on her head. Until a couple of years ago she had always had long hair. But then she sold it to a wig maker. Very soon she came to prefer her hair short. Certainly it was less trouble, and it made her ears more prominent.

At the club she's the only half-elf working, and there are no elves at all. Amandine is the one called on to be either if needed. Accentuating her ears keeps attention away from her eyes, which are an immediate giveaway if she's supposed to be an elf. Not that anyone really cares all that much about those smaller details she figures. Her income from the club had bumped up some after the haircut, and she couldn't argue with that. And besides, from what she has heard short hair is very much the current thing in Absalom.

Regardless, of nerves. Amandine finds Lady Martella's offer to double their fee if all goes well very welcome. In fact, she speaks up to Lady Martella when the chance presents itself.

"If I remember correctly, there is one task at the Gala still unassigned. I will take it on as well, and try to complete it after my first is done."

As the meeting ends, Amandine can't resist asking about the cricket any longer. "Your mechanical insect, how does it work? Is it mechanical only, relying on noise interference to obscure the particulars of our conversation? Or is there a magical aspect to it as well?"

I’m going to assume, that if the sword isn’t allowed at the gala, that there will be something like a ‘coat check, for blade, belt and buckler.

frivolities:
Gliding, more than walking, into the room Kunala looks very much the same as he did on the first meeting. As he nears there are noted subtle differences: His kidskin jacket is brushed and wrinkle free. The Falcata neatly peace bonded to both belt and buckler with a fanciful white silk -ribbon while setting on his left hip in such a way to be juxtaposed to the family crest pined on his right shoulder holding his scarlet velvet cloak. His goatee and mustache neatly trimmed and slightly waxed. His black wavy hair oiled and every strand in place. The Subtle makeup covering any redness remaining from the events of the evening before and giving him the color of one who is in the sunlight, much more than he actually is.

He stops, his stance only slightly more relaxed than a pose, one would wonder if he practices it in front of a mirror. He smiles, giving a bow. ”Ladieth!” Looking first to Martella as the steam from her mug encircles her face, ”Lady Martella, lovely ath alwayth.” Looking to Trudeau his smile wains, then holding the corner of his scarlet cloak he looks back to the lovely young ladies dress and shrugs, ”Imitation mutht be the finetht form of flattery.” and then winks. Turning toward Amandine, seeing her wig, he claps daintily. ”The wig! Thuch a change, you are Ravishing! You could be mithtaken for Calithtria, herthelf.” He then turns to Genevieve giving an exaggerated sigh, placing one hand over his heart and gesturing toward her dress with the other. ”Ah Patriatithm, how very rairly to I wish there wath leth of it.” He moves toward her, taking her hand in his, he kisses the back of her hand. ”It wath a pleasure thpending the afternoon with you ladieth. No matter what happenth thith evening, thith Grand Day of Ethaltation will be fondly remembered.” The theatrics over, he selects an empty chair that faces the door. Then, taking Martella at her word orders several appetizers recommending each dish to whomever will listen.

serious stuff
When Martella passes out the broaches, he admires it nodding in agreement to the purpose, then pins it on his left shoulder, on the jacket, opposite his family brooch. He then asks, ”Will I be able to communicate with the otherth I’m running methages to and from? Or jutht with yourthelf?”

Watching carefully as the items are pulled from the pouch and explained, Kunala considers the item and his task, in comparison to the others. He waives his hand gently. ”I believe all of you may need those itemth more than mythelf.” He then smiles and adds, ”Bethideth I don’t want anything that will cover the thent of thith lovely cologne that lady Martella hath provided.”

As they leave, Kunala offers his arm to Lady Martella and smiling quips, ”Remember you have promithed me a danth, after we have thuctheeded.”

I just want to make sure I have the events correctly: Did we already do the tasks she set out for us, or are we going to do those during the party?

The previous day
Lucius had spent the previous day wandering the city of Oppara where the gala was to be held. He'd spent time wandering the streets and alleyways, visiting a few places of establishment and then meeting with a few friends to begin making preparations of his own.

Entrance
Walking into the Flaming Magnolia Cafe, Lucius is dressed in much more fanciful but militaristic manner than before. The most notable difference now was that he wore a Taldan shoulder cloak split down the middle between the sapphire blue and emerald green colors. His rapier was tucked away to his left and piece bonded at his side, and on his right was a belt pouch that gave a jingle of coins as he moved. He smiled to lady Martella and those who had already gathered, sitting at the table.

"Tonight shall be a momentous occasion for all of Taldor indeed! I suppose my first question would be; where am I to find the High Strategos this evening? I'm certain he must be in charge of handling tonight's security."

As he waited for a response, he took special note of how everyone was dressed this evening. He had to almost double take looking at both Genevieve and Amandine as their looks had changed dramatically with the addition of their wigs. Genevieve's Taldoran colored dress and eye catching jewelry, and she wore the dark green dress she had worn before. He noted Trudeau's crimson gown and Kunala's matching crimson cape and immaculately groomed hair and mustache.

He took up Martella's offer to order some fig jam along with soft rind cheese and a cup of wine. He had never had trouble eating before performing even seemingly daunting tasks. He vaguely recalled his father's words from long ago.

Memory:
Remember, Lucius. The worst thing a person can do is to work on an empty stomach. Hunger saps your energy and makes it harder to do what you need to. If you're hurt, your body needs energy to heal, so remember to eat meat. If you need to think, hunger can be distracting, I find sweets to help a lot. If you need to run, drink water. Also, you should never turn down anyone's offer of food. So eat up, I'm going to need your help today.

After the briefing
Lucius chuckled lightly to himself as he swirled the nearly empty cup of wine. His father hadn't said anything about wine or spirits as he'd been too young. He looked up as Martella offered the golden pin and he attached it to his vest.

My own ambitions huh? I suppose that is part of what I'm here to do as well. he thought to himself.

As Martella began handing out several other items to help with the evenings events, Lucius casually glanced them over, looking largely uninterested. When she mentioned the possibility of doubling her reward if all went well however, he began examining them closely.

"Hmm, I can't imagine that having any of these would hurt our chances of success. Well if you're not taking yours, Kunala, then I'll have it. Then this, I don't know for sure but it might come in handy."

Kunala presented a pertinent question.

"I always find magic to be fascinating. Actually, I'm curious about that too. What are those limitations? Do we have to speak out loud, or can we talk in a whisper?"

Sorry for the confusion - you're about to head to the Gala. There you'll be engaging in a series of events AND have time to tackle your missions.

Answering Lucius, Martella says, "High Strategos Pythareus should be in the Arcade of Triumphs most of the evening, I imagine. He'll want to be standing next to the displays of his greatness and prowess, I'm sure.

"I will be able to message all of you at once or individually, but you will only be able to communicate back to me," Martella says. "You don't need to speak aloud - merely think your response and I'll receive it."

Turning to Amandine with a wide smile, she says, "I admire and appreciate your ambition, but I've already engaged another to help handle that task. You should be plenty occupied with yours and, more importantly, you must make time to enjoy yourself!"

In response to the cricket inquiry...
"Oh, do you like it? I'm quite proud of it. It's purely mechanical - I, sadly, wasn't 'blessed' with the magical aptitudes the rest of my family possess." You are able to hear a slight edge in her voice as she shares this. "But when magic fails, ingenuity steps in!" She stows her cricket and stands.

Looking at the remaining items on the table, she says, "Will someone please stow the rest of these on their person? I'd rather not be clinking around the Senate Hall tonight - or to be burdened during any possible dances," she adds with a small smile and tip of the head to Kunala.

Draining her goblet, she appears ready to head out the door and to the Gala. "You should all head to the Senate Hall. I imagine there will be quite a line for you to get in. Unfortunately, I was unable to secure you exclusive entrance, so you'll have to wait in line with the other aides and guests. Hopefully this is the least pleasant portion of your evening. I'm off as well, though to my fortune, I get to avoid the tedious line. May you have good fortune and great success tonight!" She turns and leaves the cafe.

It is a short walk to the Senate Hall, but Martella was correct - the line to enter the Hall is exceedingly long. Taking your place at the back of the queue, you immediately notice that it moves ponderously slow as well. Adding to the annoyance (or perhaps removing it, depending on your perspective), there are countless vendors hocking their wares to those waiting in line. They appear to mostly worthless pieces of junk - cheap Taldan flags or phony "artifacts of significant historic value".

Around you, many of the people bemoan the wait. "Don't they know who I am?!" a rotund man with too much makeup, wearing an expensive, but mostly unflattering outfit, says loudly to no one in particular. "Just wait until Senator Karthis hears of this. He'll be outraged!" He is far from alone in the complaining.

The entire affair is quite tiresome.

But, seeing as how there is no other way into the party, you get to wait with everyone else.

NOW you get to interact a bit - albeit waiting in a tedious line.

Tru nodded at the lady’s words. She picked up one of the applications of the Dust of Illusion, to go with her smoke pellet and her Liquid Blade. Although armorless and weaponless, she felt prepared for whatever complications could arise.

The first bump in the road was the long line to be admitted to the Senate. Although she felt like grumbling, once she heard the ugliness coming from the mouth of the man loudly complaining, she chose a diffent course.

”Quite a beautiful building, isn’t it? I’ve never been present in the Senate Hall before? I wonder what the architecture is like in there,” she mentions to the others.
