[spoiler=Hidden backstory]
Indir's real name is Rafange, and he was born to Kitsune parents who were often targeted for discrimination by nobles, who called them "Kitten". During his childhood, there was an incident that changed Rafange's life: a travelling noble from Katapesh intervened when he was being beaten by a group of Taldan children, several of whom were nobles. After saving him, the Katapeshi man took him to a healer and paid to treat his injuries.

Rafange died that night, and Indir Ar'Dayne took his place. As he grew up, his mental powers began to manifest, and he learned to harness them to help build his persona. He did everything he could to learn about Katapesh and soon was adept enough to carry off his scam. He targeted the house of one of the children who used to bully him and approached them, laying it on thick about how he had been attacked by bandits on the road and had his entire retinue slain. The family took him in and helped him "get back on his feet". From there, he basically moved from noble family to noble family, staying no more than a few days at a time so as not to overstay his welcome.

Now he is at least on speaking terms with most members of the Taldan court, where he plays the game well.
