@Faraz : With Greater Grapple, you don't let free your opponent with a fail check.
"You only need to succeed at one of these checks to maintain the grapple."
Taiko has UMD too, so feel safe to have Mage Armor on you.

![]() |

I'll just consider having taken a potion for now; that's what they're for. Also, thanks Taiko! I forgot about that part of Greater Grapple, it doesn't come up much. So he is grappled but not pinned.

"This man is not himself," Faraz agrees with Weiman. "Someone or -thing else is controlling him. We should just leave him tied up and put him somewhere safe until we can fix him and break him free of his shackles. Although an Iroran's answer to most questions is to exercise or study, I do not think exercise will free him from possession, Master Weiman."

Fendahl nods.
"Hrrmm. If master Weiman is correct, I have no means to break the ensorcelment. Bound may be our best recourse. Although this one seems crafty like an old fox. "

I have a wand of protection from evil if it could help
Said Taiko after looking in his backpack.

Faraz nods at Taiko. "It's worth a try." That should give him a second save I believe, assuming the person/thing who charmed him was evil.

Desmond sheathes his falchion and immediately removes his coil of rope from his backpack. "Well, lemme tie him up - just in case you can't exorcise whatever is possessing the old man."
The ranger takes his time to ensure that the bonds are secure, but not out-right harmful to the possessed.

"If he is not in a state to help us and we can not remove his condition, we should simply show ourselves around and see if we can find the manuscript. Perhaps we will find the person or thing controlling him."

Anyone searching the monks finds a necklace of fireballs (type I), a belt of physical perfection +2, and a key on the master while finding a [i]potion of fly, and some masterwork shurikens on each of the other two monks
Faraz moves toward the double door, finds it not trapped, but locked. Using the master's key the dorrs are unlocked and opened to reveal a temple.
This huge temple encloses a peaceful, echoing space. A faint aroma of old incense lingers here. Polished blue flagstones decorate the floor. Where the walls meet, the corners curve gently so that nothing jars the eyes. At the temple’s center, a round wooden pillar rises out of the floor, stretching up to support the roof ninety feet above.
Bizarrely, the pillar bristles with a motley collection of lumber, as if someone were building some horrific mockery of a tree. Joists, beams, a door, and a ship’s figurehead—an angel holding twin scythes—all hang off the pillar like branches. Thousands of scrolls and books hang from every surface as if they were leaves.
Between the door and the pillar sit four priests, two men, and two women, facing one another as if in meditation. In front of each is a teacup.

There is too many people proficient with nearly all of that for me to take any of it as a joke...

“I am Jathyl, immortal defender of the forest.” The voice of the monk says. "“If you try to steal my tree from me again, meat, I shall destroy every building on this island and control all flesh. Destroy my vessels and I shall find another and another, perhaps yours. Destroy my essence and I shall arise three days hence, ready to tear apart your boats, your homes, and your flesh.”
Taiko stays to the shadows, but doesn't notice anything supicious within the room. He does notice that one of the monks is wearing a phylactery and on the "tree" there are a couple scrolls and a shortbow in it's branchs as well as what appears to be a section of the manuscript nailed to the "trunk" about five foot from the ceiling.

![]() |

"We had better leave that alone for now until we can appease this. . . spirit." Faraz whispers to his companions while motioning to the tree.
He asks the monks, "We do not wish to steal your tree from you. You are the defender of the forest: what forest? Who are you besides a formless name that steals others' minds and voices? Perhaps we can come to an agreement."

![]() |

Taiko whispered to Faraz.
Do you have seen that five foot from the ceiling, a section of the manuscript is nailed on the trunk of this unatural tree ?
May be something was triggered by the manuscript ?
