Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Oy, sorry. Got distracted and missed this thread. Apologies!
Riddy's magic missile hits the dream thing, who screams in agony. Defensively it tries to cast! Concentration DC 23: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34 It murmurs and an indistinct shape rushes from the dream toward Ferabras! Will DC 19 vs emotion, fear, mind-affecting effect, then if that fails, Fort save DC 19. Success, you take 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2) = 5 damage! Failure on both saves, you die.
The dream-thing screams and flies toward the window, provoking Attacks of Opportunity from Ferabras, Senzo and Bodta as it goes!
The woman smiles. She takes a five foot step toward the open closet door and swipes at Bodta! Spider leg sickle vs Bodta: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 damage!
Bodta, Ferabras, Zora are up!

Since my last round action was "babble incoherently," I never actually made the move I intended--which means I'm not adjacent to the woman, and babbling precludes anything else so no AoO on the dream thingy. I've moved myself back...
confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 94
awesome.
even is attack Karnhia, odd is attack Riddywhipple: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Bodta, in his state of confusion, delivers a rapid series of punches on Riddywhipple! (at least he's still under the misfortune for one hit)
attack(misfortune, 1): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
attack(misfortune, 2): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 <--this is the effective attack
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Fera is immune to fear, so the phantasmal killer should have no effect.
I'm going to interpret the casting of that spell as an attack on Ferabras, so that even is his confused state he would attack the animate dream in response. Hope that works for you, OMB.
Ferabras shrugs aside the fearsome images that appear in his disoriented mind, but he knows the horse-like dream creature is responsible for their appearance - and it makes him mad! With his blade held high, Fera charges at the open window and begins to climb out after the dream-horse!
I don't think Fera would actually climb out the window in his confusion, but I'm not sure, since the spell can cause one to attack oneself. In any case, that's a decision for next round, and he may not be able to see his target at that point.

It is what it is Bodta. On the plus side, he still has 10 hp left.
That readied action shot: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 1 = 9
MAKE A FORT SAVE, SICKLE LADY! (DC 18): 1d2 ⇒ 2 Dex damage.
All in all, not a bad readied action. Almost makes up for the 5 consecutive 4's I've rolled.

![]() |

Zora's face retains her usual emotionless as she tries to bean Karnhia again....
Club: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Zora is unaware of the memo saying that girl fights should be slappy and clawy. She uses this stick. Pow!

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Fort Save for Sickle Lady: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 Sickle girl doesn't seem to take all the damage from the shot, but she does seem to pale slightly when the shot hits!
Ferabras hits the window, but it feels like the skin of a drum instead of a real aperture and it causes him to bounce back into the room! The dream fades away outside, disappearing into the dreamstuff.
The rest of you devolve into chaos! However you feel the confusion lift as the dream dissipates into the plane that spawned it! Confusion effect fades!
ROUND 3:
Senzo, Karnhia
Sickle Woman
Bodta, Ferabras, Zora
Senzo and Karnhia!

![]() |

Kharnia cocks her cestus, but as the bloodlust subsides cocks her head. "Why am I fighting you?" she asks Zora, before looking through the door frame, aghast. "NO. YOU STAY HERE!"
Can't go after the runaway dream. I'll just curse the woman.
She rushes into the room and gives the woman the stink-eye.
Will save please, DC 19, or she will be taking a -2 to her attack rolls for 7 rounds.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 Hexed for 1 round.
Senzo moves up and kicks the woman with force! She reels back, her nose bleeding. Karnhia's hex hits her, causing her to shudder. "Forget this and forget Nahum. I'm not sticking around to die with him." She makes a five foot step into the shadowy closet and you hear a soft POP as she disappears!
Combat over! The name Nahum sounds familiar, but you can't recall why.
In the room you discover a few tidbits of interest: seer’s tea, a spirit slate, a lesser talisman of danger sense, a collapsed spirit trumpet worth 25 gp, and a bag of a dozen finger bones, each engraved with a tiny name.
Only one room remains...
This lavishly paneled room holds three large bureaus and a few wooden chests. Esoteric symbols—all-seeing eyes, talismanic seals, and even an alphabet written in an arch for spirit communication—has been carved into the floor and walls of this chamber. A large table and two stools take up the entirety of the southern wall, stacked with weapons, gems, and a cashbox bursting with coins and scrolls.
Yeah, I accidentally swapped two rooms and their descriptions. The big room with the circle was supposed to hold the dream and the woman. Sorry. The smaller room is the repository, with the description above. We'll use the actual room for its intended use..

![]() |

Ferabras steps into the room - feeling an odd sense of deja vu - and looks around to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises waiting within. When he's not immediately attacked, he calls out to his friends, "Someone who can make sense of all these symbols and scrolls and such ought to come take a look at this place. Karnhia, Zora, you busy?"

![]() |

Shaking his head as the chaos dissipates and law ensues, Bodta looks at Riddywhipples' battered body with shock and horror. He immediately kneels before the little creature, and bows low & formally. The oread struggles for a moment, before muttering very sorry. Not intentional.
He also gives Karnhia a formal bow of apology for assaulting her friend.

![]() |

"It's all gobbledygook to me too. You know what though, some of that stuff is nice!" Definitely someone (Especially someone with Haste or the like) should put on that talisman.
As always, Senzo keeps his eyes sharp while the erudite do their thing: Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27

"Oi! That chest-o-drawers is drooling! Drooling! I don't read much, but I've been around Pathfindin' long enough to know that's trouble."
Senzo's eyes go wide. Decades of board and brick breaking flash before his eyes. "Torag's short hairs.... it's time."
Without explaining to the party what on Golarion he's doing, Senzo gives a mighty kiai and launches himself into the air towards the bureau. He snaps a flying side thrust kick, right into its top drawer!
tameshiwari!: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30 for DMG: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 DC 18 FORT or be stunned for 1 round.
Can't update map ATM

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Senzo crashes into the bureau with a mighty kick! The bureau actually lets out a grunt of pain, which is unusual bureau behavior even for Korvosa.
Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 However it doesn't seem fazed, and Senzo's foot is now stuck to the bureau, which betrays its bureau-ness by splitting down the middle to reveal a mouth and teeth!
Ferabras: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Bodta: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Zora: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Senzot: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Karnhia: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Foe: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
ROUND 1:
Bodta, Senzo, Ferabras
Bureau
Karnhia and Zora
Bodta, Senzo, Ferabras are up!

![]() |

With Senzo's foot stuck fast, he opts for other weapons. His assault continues to hold him fast, but it doesn't slow the stubborn dwarf down... too much:
Forward heel thrust kick: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 14 - 2 = 27 for DMG: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Left dropping elbow: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 14 - 2 = 24 for DMG: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Right dropping elbow: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 14 - 2 = 31 for DMG: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Ki boosted headbutt for good measure!: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 14 - 2 = 25 for DMG: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Ki: 5/8

Bodta is caught between a gasp at the freaking wardrobe declaring war(drobe), and a satisfied chuckle at Senzo going ape-shift in board breaking. Seeing his friend's foot stuck, though, goads him into violent action...he jogs into the room, uses the table to get up a good leap, and crashes a downward elbow next to the top drawer to try to free the dwarf's foot. His kiai begins as he steps onto the table, and ends in a roar as his elbow makes contact...
attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

By the time Senzo is done, there's not much of him NOT stuck to the bureau-with-teeth. But it still drools and snarls!
At least until Bodta brings the pain down on it. It lets out a pathetic squeak and sigh and suddenly both monks are freed!
Ferabras is up!

![]() |

Have a moment of signal again, so...
Ferabras advances into the room, calling out ”Anyone know what the heck this thing is, aside from a chest with teeth? I once slew a ladder with teeth, I expect this is a relation, who’s not happy to see us. “ Without waiting for an answer, he brings his sword down hard, trying not to cut any important parts of the dwarf currently stuck to the strange thing.
+2 Greatsword, PA: 1d20 + 16 - 3 ⇒ (16) + 16 - 3 = 29
Greatsword damage, PA: 2d6 + 11 + 9 ⇒ (3, 1) + 11 + 9 = 24

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Ferabras steps in to cut a dwarf free, but as he steps in, the far bureau on the north side suddenly comes alive and tries to eat him!
Mimic AoO: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17 for 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 plus adhesive! If hit, Ferabras is auto-grappled! But it misses!
Ferabras, changing his target, does not miss. He carves into it! Strength check. DC 19: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 AND managed to pull his sword free of the stickiness!
The bureau tries again!
Mimic AoO: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25 for 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 plus adhesive! If hit, Ferabras is auto-grappled! And misses again! It lets out a groan of mimic frustration!
Karnhia and Zora are up! Took some liberties with the pathing for Ferabras, but this moves the plot along a little faster. I didn't think he'd mind too much!

Jeez, I'm sorry. I even read your post of Monday and went 'oh there's things I can do once it's m y turn!' and failed to note it was, in fact, my turn. *facepalm*
...Okay, after a re-read, it looks like nobody is currently grappled, based on the text of 'both monks are freed' and the missing vs Ferabras. If someone gets grappled from this point forward in the combat, I will cast Liberating Command as an immediate, granting that person an immediate Escape Artist check with a +16 bonus. If I'm misunderstanding and anyone is currently grappled, that cast will happen now.
Surveying the bizarre scene of the sticky bureaus, Zora shakes her head. "I'm unfamiliar with these creatures, but I have always been told to avoid the entanglements of bureaucracy."
She considers briefly enchanting Ferabras's great blade, but it seems the warriors have everything well in hand. Zora steps into the room, drawing her spear, and tries to help distract the beast.
Aid Ferabras's AC: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 Success, Ferabras's AC is up 2 for the round

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Botting Karnhia moves up and fires at the drooling furniture! Pistol: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 for 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 while Riddy uses his wand! MM: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 damage!
ROUND 3:
Bodta, Senzo, Ferabras
Bureau
Karnhia and Zora
Bodta, Senzo, Ferabras are up!

![]() |

OMB - Should there be two deadly pieces of furniture on the map? Or did we destroy one and I somehow missed it?
Ferabras decides against biting this strangely sticky and seriously aggressive bit of furniture, instead slashing at it twice with his blade!
+2 Greatsword, PA: 1d20 + 16 - 3 ⇒ (7) + 16 - 3 = 20
Greatsword damage, PA: 2d6 + 11 + 9 ⇒ (2, 1) + 11 + 9 = 23
Str check, DC 19: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
+2 Greatsword, PA, iterative: 1d20 + 11 - 3 ⇒ (17) + 11 - 3 = 25
Greatsword damage, PA: 2d6 + 11 + 9 ⇒ (2, 5) + 11 + 9 = 27
Str check, DC 19: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
I'm not sure if I'm stuck or not - if the first attack hits, then I'd be stuck after the second attack. If the first attack misses, then my first Str check should apply to the second attack, and I won't be stuck. Sound right?

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

There are three bureaus. The southermost one was MONK'd to death. The northernmost one wants to eat you. The middle one has remained bureau-still so far.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

Ferabras' vorpal sword goes snikety snack and the gooey man-wanting-to-eat bureau dies in a gooey spray!
The room goes silent and the middle bureau doesn't seem inclined to be a mimic.
End of combat!

"I s'pose it's only fair. I just job that when I'm judged, Pharasma ain't made of wood and brick."
Still utterly distrustful of the remaining bit of furniture, Senzo gives the room a look: Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17
...and apparently keeps his eyes too focused on the bureau.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

The central bureau, which seems to be a real actual piece of furniture, contains some items of interest. Along with the table-top, you find the following: The tabletop contains an assortment of valuables: a +1 returning dagger mixed in with a half-dozen masterwork spider-leg sickles, 3 black pearls worth 500 gp each, 3 scrolls of cure moderate wounds, and 200 gp in coins. The bureau contains two deep drawers. The top drawer contains an assortment of blades: 3 rapiers, 10 daggers and 4 shortswords—all of masterwork quality— and a gloom blade. The middle drawer contains cult robes and a cassock of the clergy. Nestled among the robes is a small sack containing 4 garnets worth 25 gp each, 9 black onyx worth 50 gp each, and 48 pp.

![]() |

I didn't take any damage, so I'm good. Not sure about our monk friends.
"Well, that's some valuable stuff these strange creatures were storing - or eating..." Ferabras remarks. "But where do we go from here?"
OMB - do the spiral stairs near the middle of this floor go up? If so, I guess that's where we go, into the attic of the nightmare house. What could go wrong?

Ever see The Exorcist? maybe we'll meet Captain Howdy!!

![]() |

Looking back through the thread, I don't think any of us were really injured - if I'm wrong, retcon some healing!
Moving back to the bend in the hall, Ferabras studies the narrow, curving stairs going up, then turns to his friends and asks, "Everybody ready?" He then begins to ascend, his blade angled before him to lead the way up the stairs.

![]() |

Ready. Bodta stands at the base of the stairs, ready to take the drogue position after the spellcasters ascend.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

You glance outside to the porch, but all you see are great winged creatures circling the building in the gloom and decide not to mess with them as they don't seem to hold any particular threat or reward you want. You ascend up the stairs, feeling a sense of forboding as you go.
A fine bed and several pieces of antique furniture are shoved along this room’s outer perimeter in order to make room for the carefully inscribed summoning circle that takes up most of the chamber’s center.
Standing on the far side of the large room, just beyond a door into a smaller room, is a man. He's clad in ceremonial robes and his face looks familiar - this is the same man who taunted you from the portrait downstairs! Behind him floats a strange stone, from which visions of a hellish cataclysm flow and float. You can see Korvosa in flames, its people lying dead and burnt.
"I don't suppose you care to speak like reasonable people instead of murder and bloodshed? I am Nahum Caligaro. It is my betrayal that began this story, my betray by Stainton Drune. I see you know the name. What high position has he gained for himself with the power that I once allowed him to share? Magistrate? I bet he himself set you on my path, not content to simply cast me into the dreamworld, but needing the power I have to complete his terrible goals. Does he still worship Mog-Lathar, Spider God? Oh I see you did not know! Yes! That fool betrayed me and now I will have my revenge! Grant me the Paginarum Lethargica and the Clavum Somnus and I will break free of my prison and rain destruction upon that usurper! You need not be pawns, my guests. Give me the book and key and I will make you as gods in my new order! You could rule as my lieutenants, masters of the world we will burn! The Dreamstone will allow us to shape the material world as easily as the dreamworld and we will crush Drune under our boots in our vengeance! Come and let us unite!"

![]() |

Blade still in his hand, Ferabras opts to converse rather than attack the figure before him. "Forgive me, but why should we trust you?" he asks. "Can you prove that Drune is what you claim?" Considering a moment, and studying Caligaro carefully, he continues, "And why would anyone wish to burn the world? The master of a place should care for it, not destroy it."
I think I know the answer, but while Fera studies Caligaro, he will use Detect Evil on him.
Fellow Pathfinders - I looked through the thread for a bit of refresher, and we met Drune in this post, right at the beginning of the module. Tough to track these names over a long PbP sometimes.

![]() |

Since he wasn't there (and because Senzo is bad at paying attention to details not related to training) he simply keeps his eyes gimlet and his knees bent as Ferabras talks.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |

It's been a while! Sense motive checks, please!
"Proof? I am trapped here with the Dreamstone. How else do you think I came to be here? Drune was my student, my friend." He hisses that last word. "But he became disillusioned with my plan to spread our influence and make Mog-Lathar a major power. Instead he conspired to sabotage our ritual and cast us into the dreamlands so that he could usurp my position as High Priest and gain my power! But I persevered and I lived, and now I will bring the realm of nightmares to Drune and remake the world in my own image, starting with Korvosa!"
