"A very straightforward proposal, Amaranti. Unfortunately, I believe part of our implied objectives is to make the ambassador feel as though he is not being watched over by a half-dozen Pathfinders. Besides, letting him out from time to time will potentially give your new magic lance some work."

just to let you know, you have only seen the ambassador once since leaving Absalom. He has been very secretive, and any previous attempts to talk to him have been blocked by Thanzeril, the bodyguard..

also, the setup for this will seem a little railroady, but that is just to get things started. I hope you don't mind just playing along a little.

Starting post has been delayed, but will happen today, still. We had a little setback at home... Furnace wasn't working, and we are also getting our street redone. Very annoying, all.

Had my furnace issues over Thanksgiving last year, house was a chilly 45ºF in the morning (that's about 7ºC, Amaranti). Yeah, I know what you're about to say, but 45 is chilly for Texas, okay?

Happy to wait for plot to happen and roll with it. After all, I ate the stew and mopped the floor didn't I? ;-)

The next morning you all dutifully report to The Throaty Mermaid. Captain Veane meets with you briefly, at tells you all to keep out of the way of his crew. He gives you the forward cabin (off the main deck, room number 5) to bunk in. It is apparent that they usually use this for storage, as there are still a few barrels and crates stored in here, mostly foodstuffs.

The crew looks at you all as an inconvenience, much like they do Thanzeril and Sephriel, who was already in his cabin when you arrive. Any attempts to talk to the Ambassador are blocked by his bodyguard.

Please let me know what you are all doing, where you spend:
Days:
Evenings:
Night:
If you want more granularity, just let me know.

A week passes without incident, and inquiries about how much longer it will be are answered by "We'll get there when we get there." The crew is not hostile, but for the most part not friendly. The lone exception to this is the half-elf "morale officer" Azuretta, who is quite friendly.

Miro spends his days walking about the deck, learning a bit of what the sailor's do, and talking to them nonchalantly about their trade. He will make it a point to walk past the Ambassador's cabin a few times.

Evenings he will perform for whoever wishes, and will engage in games of chance and skill with the crew in an attempt to buddy up. Again, he will try to drop by the Ambassador's cabin a couple of times just to be sure the bodyguard is there and things are quiet.

Nights will be spent asleep, besides for his turn on any watch rotation should his companions choose to keep watch.

With the time already spent at sea, Cyrus is getting a little stir crazy. He spends most days out on the three decks, Fore, Main, and Aft, much like Miro. It didn't take long for him to realize that a sailor's life is not the life for him, as the confines of the ship at sea are nearly too much to handle. The ropes and rigging however have made for a wonderful place to practice some fancy new acrobatic maneuvers.

He makes an effort to chat up the sailors when he can, and takes part in all of the gambling and chance games he can as well. In fact, he has come up with another game that the sailors, even if they don't really admit it, have become rather fond of for multiple reasons. In the evenings, Cyrus spends a good chunk of time in the Cargo Hold (change that to the Main Hold if we are still not allowed down there) of the ship, practicing throwing his daggers at the rats that scurry about in the dark. When the game started to catch on, the ante started at a gold. Whoever brought in the most rats in the allotted time frame would take the whole pot. He tried his best not to dwell on the fact that the supply of targets never seemed to dwindle...

At night, Cyrus is often found scribbling in his journal in the forward cabin provided for the pathfinders, when he isn't sleeping. Occasionally he will pop out in the middle of the night to take in the view from the crow's nest, when the air isn't too chilly and the stars are out.

Lort spends most evenings fully armored, but gambling like everyone else. He does most of this in the main hold within sight of the elven diplomat's room (or, if not, on the main deck keeping an eye on Sephriel's cabin through the grating). He loses most nights, distracted as he is by keeping watch on the reclusive passenger and his bodyguard.

In the night time, Lort hones his blade quietly in complete darkness and catches up on some prayers to Kurgess. Properly honed with a whetstone in the event of trouble. The big half-orc remains within 60 feet of Sephriel's cabin if at all possible, using his keen orcish eyes to survey their precious passenger's quarters, seeing it clearly in black and white.

Been at sea for so long, not going to let this chump get hurt now. His bodyguard is indeed vigilant, but he has to sleep some time and these scallywags could probably overpower him if they has a mind to. Who knows, maybe Thanzeril will appreciate the help and we can complete our mission for the Ruby Prince.

Lort's day times are largely spent sleeping in their makeshift cabin. The food supplies left in there dwindle somewhat faster than expected. If they didn't want me to eat it, they shouldn't have left it here.

During the day Finarin splits his time. Being an elf among other races, he tries to befriend the esteemed ambassador via his body guard. Happy to try different tactics except those that would cause irreparable harm - like intimidate. Let me know and I can role play some different scenarios.

At nights Finarin remains aloof from the general crew (Pathfinders notwithstanding). He tries to observe crew interactions, crew hierarchies, and cliques much as one would observe wild animals in their natural habitat.

Not sure when a good time is to try and complete my faction missions but here is a start:

Faction scenario 1:
Finarin approaches Anera when there are few to not many people around. "Well met Anera. It seems that on a ship such as this there seems to be few places if any where one can be ... private. Do you know of any place or any ... time time when one could conduct ... buisness without the constant gaze of interlopers?" While talking to her he places the letter in her pocket.

While the group is sailing the high seas:

"All, let me see if I can get Anera away from the figurehead so we can retrieve a certain item."

Miro will spend a chunk of his time trying to befriend the woman and her bird, encouraging her to join in the games of chance or to have a drink, hell, he'll even see if she wants to visit Azuretta, if she swings that way. Anything to get her away from the fore deck.

Amaranti spends most his days on deck, enjoying the fresh air and smell of sea. Lazily he gazes into horizon, enjoying the quiet days. Once bored of watching the skyline, he studies the crew at work, happy to help should anyone ask. Evenings he spends with the pathfinders and trying to befriend the crew; gambling, telling stories or whatever might pass as the social activity on the ship. When not his turn in guard rotation, nights he spends in his hammock.

Since mission was escort duty, it is best to expect trouble. Therefore, Amaranti summons Kaisharga, and keeps it available. In good manner, he introduces the eidolon to the crew, just so to avoid any unnecessary conflict. "This my friend Kaisharga, serpent of dune sea. It very good guard, see in dark, fight good. Kaisharga, say hello to crew!"

Slowly, the eidolon uncoils, staring at the crew with those glowing eyes. Then it turns its head towards its master.
To waste my words on mortals? The sacks of meat, just waiting to be devoured by time. Point me enemy, o' master, I devour it. Point me friend, I ignore it. Ask me not for words.

No sound is uttered, but Amaranti, and only Amaranti, hears the voice of his servant.

After a long, uncomfortable silence, Amaranti scratches the back of his head. "Uh, it say it very nice to meet you!" Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Most of the time, Amaranti keeps the eidolon out of sight, coiled in their cabin. During nightly guard duty, the creature follows Amaranti, acting as his eyes in the dark.

Sent a PM to Ibid... hopefully he'll show up soon.

So, based on posts, I am going to assume that Lort is always on watch, but on the main hold, sleeping during the day. Of the other 5, I will assume that one other is on watch on deck, at least of the people that have posted. We'll assume that Old Man Ibid needs his sleep.

Miro:
Because it would mess with the flow at this time, I am going to say you haven't found a good opportunity to try, without Anera (or Keeneye) around to watch.

Finarin:
I would be hard pressed to say you don't get the chance to talk with Anera, so.
Finarin Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Anera perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21Anera Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
As you try placing the letter in her pocket, she catches your hand. She looks down, and sees the letter with Baron Jacquo Dalsine's seal, takes it, and says, "Meet me here, tomorrow, at dusk. I assume there will be a response required to this. I will give it to you then."

That was this afternoon, so conveniently her response will be after the festivities.

A week goes by, with the routine of sailing settling in. The crew does there thing, and the Pathfinders do theirs. Sephriel does not leave his cabin, and rarely does Thanzeril leave his post (and when he does, one of the faithful Pathfinders takes his place).

From the aft deck, four aquatic elf warriors attach Aramanti and Karshaiga, who are caught unawares by their climbing aboard the ship.
Elf 2 Attack vs Karshaiga: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 for for damage w/ crit: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 2) + 2 = 10
Karshaiga poison save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19 (Saves!)
Elf 1 Attack vs Karshaiga: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Karshaiga poison save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 (Fails)

The first two elves catch Karshaiga by surprise with their javelins, the first catching the serpent in the head, causing grievous damage, the second finishing the job. Note: Karshaiga is currently staggered due to the Hunter Urchin poison that is on the javelin - will continue to make saves
The other two turn to the Garundi with their javelins.
Elf 3 Attack vs Amaranti: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 for: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Amaranti poison save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Amaranti is hit by the javelin, but throws off the effects of the poison.

Elf 4 Attack vs Amaranti: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Amaranti poison save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
He is hit once more, but this time cannot shake off the poison. He bellows in pain (giving each of the sleepers a chance to wake up!)

perception w/ instructions:

Target is -10 for battle. +5 for closed door, +10 for sleeping.
For Lort, he is getting only a +1 for distance
Cyrus: Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Finarin: Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Ibid: Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Miro: Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
So, everyone wakes up. Note, unless you are wearing light armor, you'll not have your armor on. Your gear will be right next to where you are sleeping. You are prone, so move action to get up... and a move action to grab equipment. I assume separate actions for belt (w/ pouches), weapon, shield, pack, etc). You tell me what you grab as you head out. Move action to open the door.

Lort: Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
Lort has whatever gear he'd have... I'd assume pretty much everything except for his backpack.

Because it will eventually come up when I post, how much movement will it cost to get from Lort's current location to the top of the stairs? By my count, it's 30ft assuming the stairs are continuous (the map seems to suggest that they are) and don't cost more than 5ft per square of stair climbing.

Dark Archive

Fury's Toll | MotD

@Lort - 30' movement will put you to the door at the top of the stairs. The door is currently closed (move action to open). Exiting the door, when you can, will put you on the deck, below where elf #2 was.

Finarin leaps out of bed, and starts grabbing his gear. What he grabs we'll leave up to Finarin. One of the elves (#2) runs down the stairs, drawing his trident, to engage in combat with Amaranti. (attack with trident: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6). Blood pooling around the fallen eidolon causes the elf to slip, throwing his stab off target from the staggered Garundi.

Things are starting to look a bit grim for our friend the Garundi Summoner, as a second elf draws his trident, and moves to attack. Attacks with trident: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9. Hearing the sounds of battle overhead, Lort springs into action. At last, after so many months, I finally get to use my new greatsword! I was beginning to worry that I would wear it down into a rapier before it tasted blood.

"Fighting above!" screams Lort rapidly (and more than a little joyously) at Thanzeril, "Find Sephriel and don't let him out of your sight! I've got this. Ha!" leaping up the stairs two or three at a time, the enormous warrior reaches the top in mere seconds.

A door! Between me and battle. There's always one more obstacle. Lort half-opens, half-bashes the door noisily outwards. Surveying the scene of battle, he feels a twinge of concern for his big Garundi friend. He can handle it, and now Kurgess has blessed me with the power to heal him if he can't.

"At last! Some action!" is the elated half-orc's battle cry as he impatiently brandishes his razor-sharp greatsword, looking for a worthy opponent.

I am going to assume that you are waiting until Amaranti moves... though he'll still be potentially engaged in combat. Someone will need to open the door, though. I am assuming, 5' to the door, open door, ready shot when you have a shot. Currently, either elf will have cover, #2 from the door, #1 from Amaranti and the mast.

It all happened so fast, javelins flying from the dark. Kaisharga falling down. A javelin hitting Amaranti; pain followed by odd numbness. Then, elves charging down.

For moment Amaranti panics, not knowing what to do. Then he hears the shouts of his comrades, and sees Lort appearing on the deck. Encouraged by this, he takes a fighting stance, staggers backwards, and gives his newly enchanted lance its first true test.

With a roar of unbridled glee, Lort rushes up the stairs to face off against one of the two remaining elves. The half-orc's maniacal eyes reflect in equal parts his hearty Ulfen lust for war and his bloodthirsty orcish savagery. In the dim light, the elf is perhaps unaware of exactly how badly this metal-encased madman wants to maim him.
