Kinvara, realizing that she has been seen, strides towards the newcomers.

"Fane, Oana, there you are. Folk have been looking for you. What have you been doing hiding down here? Why just this afternoon, Captain of the Guard, Lucian Groy was telling us how some thought you had succumbed to the Tallowthroat. You should not be here, you should be under the care of a proper healer. You are very ill."

Vandrare stands to his full height as he realises he's been spotted. Lowering his sword, he stares intently at the two sickly figures and moves in front of Kinvara.

Not much of a public speaker, Van will move one square forward in order to cover Kinvara. He doesn't cut off their line of sight to her or act threateningly, but he will ready to attack if he or Kinvara are charged.

Tess keeps to the shadows and hopes to see a bit more as she moves for a better view.

Fane and Oana look at each other, and Oana begins to shed a few silent tears. Sick, I know, close to dying, that's what they say, she replies.

But Ilquis is here. His light...drives the darkness away... Fane adds. Look!

Indeed, as you look past the vats and the pair of humans into the room, the light threatens to overpower your eyes. In such bright illumination, you can't help but feel a sense of foreboding, as if something's watching despite your efforts to hide. The light seems to emanate from a curious sight in the middle of the room.

What used to be a wood rack designed to hold candles hanging to dry has been broken and mangled, and sits in the middle of the chandlery floor. Around it is a circle surrounded by strange symbols, drawn in cooled tallow and what looks suspiciously (and horrifyingly) like blood.

Knowledge (arcana) DC15:

The symbols used in the circle's creation have a clear meaning. The drying rack has been pressed into service as a makeshift altar meant for one thing: ritual sacrifices.

Xander, Milo:

Faint over the noise of the furnace, you hear a soft humming sound, like the sound of hummingbird wings, coming from near the north vats.

Suddenly, the same small voice from before erupts in a loud shout. તેના કાન અવાજ લો!

Sylvan:
Take the sound from her ears!

A nimbus of light erupts around Kinvara; she winces in discomfort as her ears hum almost painfully with a loud, high buzzing, but it subsides, leaving her none the worse off.

Fools! I told you, I’m not to be interrupted! Leave the thralls be! The baron will hear of your insolence, your meddling!

No one said they were closing them, so I assumed they were still open, unless someone would like to close them now.

Milo would like to, yes. :P Given it's a surprise round, he may not be able to do both, but he'll at least move towards them.

"I hear something flying around by the north vats!" he calls to the others, "but I can't see it!"

He leaves his hiding place, bolting back towards the doors they came in by with one thought in mind: shut them. If their unseen assailant really is a servant of the baron's, then Milo's strong sense of self-interest tells him they need to make sure it stays shut in here with them, and can't slip out, unseen, to go find the baron, or other help.

Correct - he'll be able to get next to them, then close them next round.

Xander's clouded eyes see truth - a small human-like figure, wide dragonfly-like wings behind him, is outlined by a spectral mist, pale and blue against the yellow light emanating from the altar. He's made no effort to duck into a hiding place; indeed, he is standing full in the glow of the makeshift altar.

Marker on the map in a bit. Remember, Xander is the only one who can see him.

As Xander's eyes fall on the outline, the spectral figure's head snaps around and locks eyes with him. The small voice lets out another cry in the same strange language, and this time Xander is bathed in the glow of a spell as the figure darts to a new location.

Xander Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Xander is not so fortunate as Kinvara, however - as the nimbus of light washes over him, he claps his hands to his ears in pain as buzzes and chimes overwhelm him, then suddenly give way to utter silence.

Xander is deafened. Vandrare, Kinvara, and Milo are up.

Markers for everyone are up. I've made my best guess as to everyone's position.

Kinvara looks around for the owner of the small voice.

Woops, my apologies, I missed the line stating I was up again. Herpderp.

Milo punctuates his words by closing the doors, to shut everyone in, including their new 'friend'. Then, he turns and dashes towards the mysterious Ilquis... with a bit of derring-do along the way. He reaches up with his free hand to the edge of the furnace, using that to pull himself up and over, in a backflip over the sick Oana.

(Move action to close door; free action to activate his boots; move action to attempt to move 4 squares due west. This would mean he is moving through the square of Oana; I'm not sure whether Oana is actively counting as an enemy right now, but if so, he will attempt an Acrobatics check to move through the square of an enemy (Oana's CMD +5).

Vandrare, despite searching frantically, is not able to gain any clues as to the mystery assailant's location.

Milo's daring acrobatics pay off, as he is able to catapult himself over Oana's head to land safely behind her.

Leave? Fane responds with a confused look in his eye? We can't leave...Master Ilquis's light protects us...

He has to stay safe... Oana adds.

Both reach for their belts, where solid wood clubs hang. They pull them free and swing at Vandrare, but the weapons lurch ineffectually past him.

Xander and Tess are up.

Xander begins the familiar words and gestures of a spell to hold Fane in place. But with the silence reigning in his ears, he can't hear his own words. One change of intonation goes wrong, and the spell's energy fizzles out harmlessly.

20% chance of spell failure for your spells right now, Xander. I can keep rolling it or you can roll it, whichever you prefer.

Tess conceals herself in the shadow of the northmost vat, waiting for a chance to strike at their hidden enemy.

Another high-pitched shout rises, this time from near the altar. તેની આંખો માંથી પ્રકાશ લો! This time, the nimbus of light settles over Milo. A strange white light builds in his view, but after a few moments it fades away, leaving him no worse off.

With a screech of frustration at the failure of his final spell, Xander sees the spectral figure fly forward and take a place behind the furnace, though everyone else misses the sound of beating wings. Its place also puts it next to Milo - with Fane opposite, distracting Milo from any attacks.

Vandrare, Milo, and Kinvara are up.

Sorry, haven't been able to make it to the computer to move Kinvara that five foot step back. Been working from phone and tablet.

Kinvara watches as first Xander, then Milovic are attacked by the hidden voice. "If only I could spot that thing. It called them thralls. Perhaps they are not acting under their own thoughts."

With a quiet voice she murmurs, "I'm sorry." as she attempts to keep Fane busy.

Kinvara, I got you moved five feet backwards.

Vandrare takes a swing with his sword, purposely turning it to the flat, but it can't quite make a solid impact through the leather armor Fane wears. I even tried to check for flanking to see if you could get it. :)

Kinvara, too, has some trouble with her attack, as her long spear catches the vat behind her and gets momentarily hung up, hampering her stab.

Milo, however, has better luck. His sap swings hard at Oana and connects solidly with her chest, and she drops in a heap to the floor.

Upon seeing his wife fall, Fane's face blanches. Oana...no...please, don't hurt us any more...or Master Ilquis. He's one with the light...keeps us safe... Tears begin to run down his cheeks and over his swollen throat, and he drops his club to the floor and raises his empty hands.

No attacks from Fane. Oana is unconscious. Tess and Xander are up.

Gonna get this up now. Unless Ilquis can kill both Fane and Oana, Kinvara's actions should work.

Kinvara watches the ill woman fall with a wince. When she recovers, she ignores Xander's cry and steps forward once more and kneels at Oana's side. As she moves, she pulls off her glove, revealing the putrid flesh beneath. She places her hand upon the injured woman and speaks. "Blessed Mother, this one is not yet ready to return." Casting stabilize.

Kinvara turns to look up at Fane, letting her hood fall back and points at him with her ungloved hand. "You, take her over there." As she points to the northeast corner behind the vats. "Whatever happens, stay out of our way and do not leave this place."

Xander watches helplessly as the winged specter dodges easily out of the way of most of the goo, although the splatters catch him, tangling his arms, legs, and wings. With a screech, he struggles against the goo and barely manages to land on his feet as he falls to the floor. The goo also has an unintentional effect - it provides a wisp of visual references for those not blessed with Xander's gift, giving a glimmer of a chance at locating him in the overwhelming light coming from the altar.

I'll give a -5 to his Stealth for the tanglefoot bag as well, because, let's be honest, strands of goo hanging in the air helps a bit. :) I've rolled Perception checks for noticing him before his attack.

Xander watches as the figure gathers his wits, and even Vandrare is able to make out his position from the movement of the goo. The figure swings his dagger at Milo, hoping to surprise him with an invisible strike, but Milo's uncanny ability to avoid danger serves him well, and he dodges out of the way of the blade.

Milo, 4 damage. Uncanny dodge saved you a crit and 3d6 sneak attack. :)

Frustrated, he lets out a yell and moves away from Milo, but if anything, his new position is even less concealed - Milo, Tess, and Vandrare can all make out a blurry outline in the light, hung with strands of brittle goo like party streamers.

I've pre-rolled Perception checks for this round to make things simpler. As I said above, Milo, Tess, and Vandrare are all aware of his new position. Milo, Vandrare, and Kinvara are up - Kinvara, I'll include your actions in the next post.

So, who's up? Are we just waiting for Van at this point?

Yes, it's just Van we're waiting on. If he hasn't posted by midday tomorrow I'll bot him.

Kinvara, in a moment of mercy, kneels by Oana and touches her. She does not wake, but she smiles for a moment, and Fane's eyes well a bit. Y-yes. Of course, he replies to Kinvara's request, picking his wife up under the shoulders and pulling her behind the vats. But please, don't hurt Ilquis...

Xander speaks his words of power, and his divine blessing washes over everyone, joining the power of Pharasma already empowering his allies.

Milo jockeys for position around a frustrated Ilquis, waiting for a distraction to make his strikes more effective.

Vandrare rushes forward to give Milo a hand. Stepping opposite Milo, he takes a swing with his sword - seeing that Milo is opting for non-lethal methods, he does the same, swinging with the flat of his sword.

Vandrare attack (-4 for nonlethal, +2 for flanking): 1d1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 131d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Both Milo's sap and Vandrare's sword swing wild, however.

Tess is up. With one combatant left, after Tess's and Ilquis's turns we'll do combat rounds from here all together for simplicity's sake. Also, now that more people are engaging more directly with him...

Knowledge (nature) DC16:
This creature is a lurker in light, a mischievous and usually malignant species of fey. Fey are often quite resilient to most attacks, although the touch of cold-forged iron burns them.

Knowledge (nature) DC21:
Despite their usually dark and cruel natures, lurkers in light have an affinity for bright light and can blend into it, becoming invisible while in the light. Shadowy illumination, however, negates this ability and bring them back into visibility.

Knowledge (nature) DC26:
Lurkers in light have another unusual ability as well - the ability to transport themselves between areas of bright light, as a dimension door spell.

Tess moves in on Ilquis flanking him.

5 of 15 damage to tanglefoot goo.

Tess swings her halberd with mighty force, and it looks for a moment as if she'll strike true - but her weapon passes through empty air, missing the fey.

Still struggling against the strands of alchemical glue, Ilquis decides discretion is the better part of valor and dodges away from his assailants, handily ducking beneath their weapons and withdrawing. His blurry outline fades into the light, but Milo manages to make out a shimmer near the altar, a flash of his dagger as he scrapes at the goo entangling him.

Everyone is up!

"It's over by that vile altar!" Mahdi shouts, gesturing.

(Hopefully I can do that as a free action, but, out of curiosity: is any of the wax in the vats currently in liquid form? Or is it all hardened? Orrr would Milo not be able to tell from ground level (also a valid answer....)?

The vat that was set as a trap on the door is liquid; it has a lit brazier underneath it and you can see steam. The others are solid, as evidenced by the people trapped inside.

And yes, calling out is fine; it'll give +5 to Perception checks, which puts everyone but Kinvara able to find his square.

Already rolled it in the GM screen above; you do know his square. :)

Kinvara considers the magic and tactics that this creature has exhibited.

"It is a fey. If you have cold-iron, use that. It is our best chance to injure it."

That's perfectly fair. :)

Still, I had a fantastic time, and I'll keep an eye out for future games.

Thank you, GM Rennai for running this, and for us getting to getting it complete.

If anyone's interested in another campaign, I've just posted a recruitment thread for Flight of the Red Raven. If you like, check it out!

I am _so_ sorry for disappearing. I had a series of life implosion and am just now getting everything stable again.

I am not going to go into detail, suffice to say that I dropped a bunch of balls and these boards were one of them.

I hope you all can forgive me. I hope to return to PbP games in the future and would love to do so here. I don't think my life is together enough yet, but I look forward to the time when it is.
