"I don't truly believe anyone beyond penance, but it takes a strong will to commit to the path and we know not if they have it in them. We shall see what they say at the end of a blade, and put them down if they will not." She turns to Stalwart and nods, drawing her sword in anticipation of what's to come. "Yes. We've an important mission, and it's best we get moving."


Clear directions from Chief Sull help you on your way as you set out for the tunnels, and the mentioned landmarks are just as described. After about 26 minutes of walking - held back, as usual, by Anevia's limp - the passageway narrows to a five-foot walkway with clear markings of picks and chisels along the walls. There don't seem to be any artificial lights up ahead, so illumination spells and the like will stick out quite badly.

Peeking around a corner, you can see into the first area. Barricades made of heaped loose rocks and wooden boards bisect this cavern. Beyond the barricades, a wooden screen covers the lower half of a tunnel mouth. Two guards are standing there, and haven't noticed you yet, but probably will once you round the corner.

A map is now available at the top of the page. We won't be moving avatars around on it, but it will help you get a sense of where you are and what the environment is like, and it will be updated as you explore new areas.

Tarov grips his weapon in both hands, before looking back towards Julian. "You want t' use those bombs o' yers? No betta way t' get their attention, I'd think," the dwarven knight suggests.

What I'm thinking is that Julian can toss a bomb at them, and Tarov will set up his Defensive Focus in the chokepoint, so they'll need to get their stuffing beat in when they try to investigate/come fight us.

Paige sheaths her blade and instead draws her bow. "I'd suggest an illusion to lure them in, but there is no chance for cover here, so luring them with an attack into an ambush may be best." Paige readies an attack action with her bow so that she will fire on one as they approach, but right before they engage into melee, saving her the headache of a -4 to-hit.

Along the way to the Traitors hideout Julian pulls out some extracts. He gives the first to Tarov and explains its effects. "This will make you larger, the size of an ogre if I recall correctly. So be careful in tight places."

The next one he hands to Paige. "For the shieldless Paladine. This will give you a shield for up to two minutes. You only get one so use it wisely."

Lastly he hands an extract to Yukio. "In case you get injured, this is a potion of healing. It's easier for me to make these right now, however you and I will probably see little action. Hehe." He chuckles as he pulls out a larger vial for himself.

"As you wish, first things first though..."

Julian strides forward, the new armor jangling slightly as he downs the larger vial compared to the others. His body cracks and shifts as muscles become more defined, not larger by any means just his overall appearance is more healthy. However he takes on a more bestial look than before. His digitigrade legs were no longer hideable and the joints popped in relief as stood normally. His voice was more bestial now as well as his roughened skin. "Thats new..."

He rounded the bend with his bomb in hand. Sighting in the closest mongelmen and lobbing the fiery concoction at them...

Tarov tucks the extract into his pouch, before following after Julian. He sinks into a defensive fighting stance right behind the bend and clutches his weapon. Once Julian tosses the bomb at the mongrelman, the dwarf calls, "Now get behin' me, lad!"

"Thank you for the potion Julian," she said as she put the potion away in her sack.

Yukio fell in behind Tarov and began chanting in Tian before reaching forward and lightly touching his shoulder. "There, this should help protect you from the worst of their blows Stalwart."

She then shifted slightly to the side, preparing to use her spear's reach to attack whatever might close with Tarov.

The two mongrelmen began howling and screeching as soon as you rounded the corner into the cavern - the mounds of material were enough to provide cover, but not completely block you from view, and they were quite quick to react. Unfortunately, their defensive postures as they howled weren't enough to save one of them from damage, and that one took a five-foot step back before reaching to the door and clicking something there. The healthy mongrelman, on the other hand, moved completely behind the cover to hide from sight as his screeching continued. Neither of them seemed inclined to rush towards you, and there was no way of telling what the one hiding in cover might have been doing...

I believe Yukio's up again, followed by the Mongrelmen.

"We'll need to move quickly then!" she responded to Tarov's observation. Yukio lunged forward and stabbed at the mongrelman who had gone for the door, hoping to finish him off quickly.

As Yukio moved, the mongrelman hiding in cover swung out with his club in an attack of opportunity.

It didn't manage to even strike her, much less do any damage, and the injured mongrelman slumped to the ground... just before the door opened and three more warriors stepped out (and over the body of their companion), each holding a club. Two of the mongrelmen - including the one in cover - managed to flank Yukio, while the other two took up positions in front as they carefully maneuvered... and began pounding away.

Tarov growls again, rushing ahead to fight the attacking mongrelmen, but he stumbles on the way, his weapon swinging wide.

The Bestial Julian moves in quickly, coming in behind his companions and lobbing another bomb at the now opened door and the warriors that were about to enter the room. He through the vial with precision, using the bodies of his opponents to shield his companions from harm...

Paige moves swiftly forward, dropping her bow and drawing her sap as she marches up toward the mongrels. "Take one alive so that we can interrogate them about the threats ahead," she calls out as she comes up onto one of them, orienting herself opposite Yukio as she swings the small leather club at a mongrel who seems to still be standing, but looks to be considerably worn down.

Tarov's swing missed, but Julian's bomb struck one of the mongrelmen, badly scorching him. As for his friends...

...Well, neither managed to avoid the splash damage of the weapon. Paige's followup strike took down the most injured of the mongrelmen, knocking him unconscious, but that left three of them still alive and able to fight. The two injured ones stepped five feet each to flank Paige - the third, still healthy, swung at Yukio again.

As the club struck her side, Paige winced, dropping her sap and swiftly drawing her blade. "Traitor of your own kin, you will know no mercy from me on this day!" She swung hard at the mongrelman who'd struck her in turn.

Tarov roars, his call boosting his companion's spirits, before turning to Paige and shouting, "Keep yer guard up, lass!" He emphasizes the command by bringing his weapon around to strike at one of the mongrelmen once more.

Tarov uses Encouraging Roar* (swift action), uses Aid Another to boost Paige's AC (move action), then uses his Enduring Crane Strike to attack one of the mongrelmen (standard action).

Julian, seeing that most of their opponents were wounded now, decides to take a risky gambit and tries to move through their threatened areas and assist Paige by flanking her opponents. As he rolled to his feet his Scimitar streaked past, hammering through his opponents defenses with frightening ease...

Fully on his feet he continued to fight defensively, while simultaneously trying to hold back the beastial fury that was welling inside him.

Didn't know how many AoO's I needed to roll so I rolled at least four in case they have Combat reflexes. ;)


The mongrel dueling with Paige managed to push her weapon back, only to be taken down by Julian a moment later. Tarov's weapon crashed into the other one by her side, leaving one last Mongrelman alive and combat ready. He growled loudly, but turned and withdraw through the door in the wall, fleeing deeper into the complex of tunnels instead of continuing the fight. The remaining mongrelmen were unconscious or dead - though it wouldn't be long before the unconscious one was awake again - and for now this place seemed safe.

Of course, that might not remain the case if the fleeing mongrel managed to acquire reinforcements...

"Af'er him, before he calls more o' his pals!" the dwarven knight calls, slinging his weapon over his shoulder.

Julian's eyes lacked the normal intelligence he had, in fact he was moving in a more instinctual way. Striking where it was easier, hammering the enemy where it hurt and maximising his"Run Coward... Your still going to burn..." Julian mumbles in a deep bestial way as he rounds the corner and pursues the fleeing mongrelfolk.

Move 30ft if no line of sight he will move another 30 unless that puts him out in the open. which then he will stop short.

If I am able to get line of sight with a single move then he tries hitting the mongrelmen with a RoF. Rng 30ft.

Paige runs forward after the fleeing mongrel, knowing their ambush won't work a second time against a potentially larger force. She throws her hand out toward the man and chants, calling on her magic to impede him. Casting Grease such that it begins on the square he's standing on and extends to the one in front of him. DC 15 Reflex to not fall flat on his ass immediately, plus other goodies.

The lingering smells of cooked meat and rank bodies hang in the air. Ten bedrolls, each piled with coarse blankets and animal furs, surround a fire pit filled with glowing coals. Tanned hides hang stretched on the walls, each crudely painted with scenes of deformed humanoids hunting giant vermin in caves.

The fleeing mongrelman had darted towards the northeastern side of the room, where one of the doors hung open, after his rapid withdraw action - and vaulted onto the back of a large, lizard of some kind, nearly the size of a pony. Its skin seemed unusually earthen and tough, and as you passed through the door behind the mongrel, the lizard opened its mouth and sent a hail of stones shooting through the air and towards all of you.

Nature 13:
The creature is a Monitor Lizard, a relatively common (if sizable) inhabitant of caves and caverns. However, this one's coloring patterns are unnatural - it appears to have been infused with the power of stone, and if the burst of rocks is anything to go by, it may have capabilities that others of its kind lack. A rare creature for sure, probably kept as a combination pet and guard.

Paige's spell spread across the ground a moment later, coating it in a slippery layer of grease, even as Julian fired a bolt of ice (that, sadly, missed).

The lizard just barely managed to stay on its feet despite the slippery substance, and its tongue flicked out a bit.

The creature still seemed to be reeling from the effort of launching all of those stones, and wasn't able to react nearly fast enough.

The lizard - and its rider - are just in front of the northeast door in the room. Tarov is within melee range - five or ten feet, at his discretion - while Paige and Julian are just inside the door.

I'm okay with being @10ft from the lizard.

Julian's tail becomes more scaled and rougher looking as he rolls his shoulders with loud cracks as his body continues its mutation. He gives the Mongrelman Traitor a savage grin as the bomb flies towards its mount before he spun his scimitar expertly. "Your a dead man."

Paige groaned as she realized that her bow had been left a short distance back, preventing her from having a means of attacking the lizard from a distance. So instead, she begins to sing, enhancing her allies' abilities and preparing her voice for an attack.

The lizard seemed to be surprisingly agile despite the grease on the ground - which may have been because its feet were slightly in the ground, anchoring it well and helping it avoid the worst of the bomb's blast. The rider nudged the beast forward a moment later, and it moved five feet to get closer to Tarov before snapping out in a vicious bite.

Bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

The bite failed to connect, but was promptly followed up by a double-handed overhead swing of the mongrelman's club...

Melee: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 for Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

...and this one looked to be slightly more accurate than the first blow, not to mention a very powerful swing in its own right that had been delivered straight to the top of the dwarf's skull. Thank goodness for helmets - without that, there might have been an unpleasant splat sound to worry about.

Julian lunged forward, now alongside Tarov, Scimitar in hand and his tail whipping as he tried to end this annoying lizard once and for all. His physique was more pronunced now, more refined and more bestial as well. His scales were thickening and become more durable by the second, his tail was thicker and his wings were more pronunced. He growled with the powerful swing he unleashed on the lizard the mongrelfolk was riding, intent on throwing the fool to the floor with its beasts death.

His breath was more labored as the mutatgen continued to take affect, his cautious nature was being replaced by a more vicious and reckless nature. One that wanted to tear its opponents to shreds...

Tarov groans at the heavy blow, but recovers quickly. He roars encouragingly to his companions, before swinging his weapon at the mongrelman's mount.

Paige moves in, eager to fell the lizard before any worse creatures spill through, needing to retrieve a few of her weapons rather urgently. She swings her sword, praying for better luck than she's had this day so far.

The creature groaned as it simply sunk to the ground, not able to withstand the combination of blows, and its body soon went still. Its rider shrieked in rage, and from its position atop the dead lizard's sturdy body (the creature being rock-like even now), he swung down as hard as he could in vengeful rage.

Of course, for most people, rage wasn't a good substitute for skill or accuracy...

The defensive stance certainly wasn't threatening - but Julian and Paige's attacks were, and both struck the Mongrelman, slaying it. With his defeat, the area seems to be safe for the moment - there's a door to the north, as well as two more on the eastern wall. The northern one on that side seems to be where the lizard creature came from, and looks like it leads into a pantry of some kind. The other doors are shut.

Julian use his scimitar to manipulated the unmoving limbs of the corpses and his savage look wavers momentarily before he shakes it off. His blade drips blood across the floor as he look around the room, his skin splitting and revealing more bony protrusions as his natural armor continues to harden...

"Five down... Is that all?" He snorts as he kicks the unmoving legs of the dead mongrelmen in his passing. "Pathetic."

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

He remains on guard but confidently strides towards the open Pantry-door and decides to take a look inside. Just as he does so the shimmer surrounding his scimitar blade vanishes like it had never been there, releasing motes of light that danced briefly as they left the blades edge...

His changes were finished for now and he was far different then before, standing on digigrade legs, his wings were slightly more pronounced and he appeared far more heakthier then before. Despite the battering he took from a rogue rock he was still spoiling for a fight.

"I should have done this years ago." He gives a deep chuckle as he regards his changes fondly.

Tarov gives Julian a sideways glance, but the tiefling still appears to be sane and in control of his actions, so he chooses to let the matter be. He also assists in searching the room.

A rack of hooks hangs from the ceiling, cured slabs of meat dangling from them and filling the room with a smoky aroma. A group of barrels appears to hold other preserved foodstuffs. Aside from the food - which is arguably precious in its own right - there doesn't seem to be much of value here.

Anevia, Aravashnial, and Horgus are still by the entrance towards the common room, clearly trying to stay back and out of trouble as you proceed through the complex.

Paige wipes her blade and sighs, ceasing her performance and running back through the way she came, grabbing her bow and sap. As she comes back, she grabs the mongrelman she knocked unconscious, but finally gets a good look at Julian, does a doubletake as she drops the unconscious traitor. "We should get some directions out of him before we move on." She draws rope from her pack and ties his hands up before dragging him to his knees, hand shimmering as she places it onto his forehead and chants, soothing his wounds, both deadly and otherwise.

Burned a use of Lay on Hands to heal him back to consciousness. It heals its worth of both lethal and nonlethal.

The mongrelman's eyes fluttered open - and one of his hands stabbed outwards in an attempt to claw out Paige's throat, though he wasn't quite able to reach her with his injuries as bad as they were. "You're too late, surface scum." the creature growled in rough - but intelligible - Common. "Your city is dead and nothing you do matters."

Still standing over by the pantry alone Julian staggers, gripping his head as his intellect warred with this state of fury he was now in. A silent scream escapes his open mouth as his tail whips around erratically. Must.. remain... in control! However the Mongrelman's words sanpped him out of his struggle as his fury once again took hold once more. To avoid impaling the vile weakling he decided to hunt more prey on his own. A low growl escaped his throat as he looked to the closed door to the east.

He approaches it and opens the closed eastern door, standing to the side with scimitar in hand.

Paige presses her blade against the mongrelman's throat, keeping perfectly still despite his discouraging words. "Tell us what lies ahead. How many are you? Who is your commander? Information is the only currency that can buy you your life a the moment."

"Then you have nothing of value to offer." the mongrel spat out, a twisted gleam in his eye. "You could try asking nicely, though, since I have nothing to hide. The only thing that waits ahead is destruction and despair - nothing but the last gasps of a dying city. Have fun meeting Hosilla - she'll show you your doom as she rips out your tongues."

Meanwhile, the other eastern door had been opened, revealing the chamber beyond. In the southwestern part of this room, stout stone chairs surround a block of larger stone that serves as a table. The table's top is strewn with bone dice and cracked clay jugs. Stained canvas pillows rest on the chairs. A copper bowl filled with coals hangs from the ceiling, filling the room with warmth and an orange glow.

All of that's of slightly lesser importance, however, as an arrow shoots through the air and right towards Julian's chest!

The impact of the arrow knocked the wind out of him and so his speech came as a soft whisper. "Finally..." Blood spilled from the deep wound, but he paid it no mind as he looked at the beautiful opponentbefore him. He smiled broadly as his fury welled up inside him. He spoke the words loudly enough so his opponent could hear him. "... someone worth Killing!"

While she was nocking another arrow he was already finishing a bomb mixture. "My Turn!" The bomb went off releasing flame and smoke near the blue skinned archer. Before it had cleared Fey came bursting through the smoke with Scimitar in hand trying to pin the archer down in a way that she wasn't going to weasel her way out easily. The smile he gave her never reached his eyes as he planned on killing her...

Not sure the placement on the map. But he tries to pin her down in a way she can't step back and shoot him if possible. Fey enjoys making his prey squirm. >:3

Tarov hears Julian bellowing in the other room and grabs his weapon, rushing to assist. "Fey, what happened, lad?" he calls, his armored boots clomping heavily on the floor.

Tarov double moves towards Julian and the other room.
