Cira walks slowly past the new set of cells, that feeling of dread still growing. It was one thing to see the cells empty, but these, with their previous occupants still inside? That was much worse in her opinion. As the light front her staff washes over the victims one by one, she can't help but feel a sense of hopelessness for these individuals.

These poor people. I wonder what they did to deserve— The sudden new voice causes her to yelp in surprise, throwing herself to the opposite side of the chamber and away from the figure. Leaning against the wall, she looks frantically between her friends and the pale man in front of her, hand on her chest as her heart races.

”H-how? Who are… How?

As Grargath reaches for his waterskin, Cira takes a few deep breaths, straightens herself as best she can, and moves closer to the cell, peering at its occupant.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

That poor man. How had he survived down here? It didn't seem like it should be possible, yet here he was.

"Are you... okay?"

What a stupid question, she thinks to herself, but after that very unsettling surprise, she finds it's the only thing she can think to ask.

M Human Monk (unchained) 2

A cell block hidden behind a secret door? Why?

Kade had to wonder as his severe eyes scanned the newly unveiled cells, and their long dead occupants. What had these people done to merit such a clandestine confinement? Surely nothing so bad as to deserve their unfortunate ends. He couldn't think of any offense severe enough to warrant the slow death of starvation. He tried to imagine what their desperation must have been like and couldn't. In all his time incarcerated he had never considered this scenario; simply waking up and finding oneself alone behind bars. He suppressed a shudder.

And then jerked in the direction of the voice suddenly crying for them, fists raised. Funny how one's heart rate could go from perfectly level to Shoanti festival drum beat in a second. The fists were quickly lowered, however, when he saw that this was no threat. No, these people needed their help.
With a moment to think, Kade would most likely have realized that these prisoners being here now, alive, made little sense. Their invocation of Aroden, the god now dead for a century, likewise should have rung some alarm bells.

Instead, eager to help these unfortunate souls he rushed in after Grargath, still letting him go first with his waterskin. Bless the dwarf, Kade had left his at the inn. Instead he tried inspecting the cell door and its frame. Perhaps there was some way they could let these captives out.

Francis looks at the cell rooms in disgust. "These people never got a second chance." he growls. as he hears the voice calling out, he turns and looks at the man in alarm. Everyone else seems long dead...there is still a living prisoner down here? Does that mean someone is still using this place? He approaches the cell and gives the man a quick look.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Keep in mind Clerics detect evil automatically. If the "prisoner" is undead, Francis will know he is evil, even if he doesn't realize he's undead.

If Detect Evil picks something up:
Francis jumps back and swears "Downflower's Blade" He grips his morningstar and says "Be careful! This man radiates evil like a torch!"

If Detect Evil doesn't reveal anything:
"Imprisoned down here for poaching." Francis growls. "I wish I could say I was surprised that nobility would treat a man trying to get by and do right by his family in such a way, but sadly I'm not."

Francis turns and looks at Kade. "He mentioned Baron Sarvo. Do you know who that is? I thought the Baron was dead?"

Francis's spell picks up evil.

Marcus:
Looking into the cell, you don't see other people in there, but the cell is larger than any of the others. You can't see everything inside.

Knowledge (religion) DC 10:
The man thanked Aroden for your arrival, but Aroden has been presumed dead for over 150 years.

Knowledge (history) DC 16:
The prisoner mentioned Baron Sarvo. Sarvo was a the lord of Belhaim in 4500 AR and the last Canteclure to rule the town.

The prisoner reaches takes the water and drinks deep. When finished, he looks back to Grargath. "Food! Please! Good Baron Sarvo wills it!" He ignores any questions asked.

"Wha'-" Grargath barely has time to react to the cleric's warning before his waterskin is taken from him and nearly emptied. Grargath quickly snatches back his waterskin and takes a step back from the prisoner. "Wha' d' yah mean, radiatin' evil?"

Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Grargath glares at the mysterious prisoner accusingly. "Jus' who are yah? Answer me!" Things had taken a sharp turn, and he was cursing himself for just handing over his water, no questions asked. He should have stopped for a moment, questioned just why there was still someone down here. Why was he talking about a god who's been dead for over a century? Nothing was adding up. Grargath takes another step back from the cell, just to be safe.

"This man may well deserve to be in here for his crimes, which I will wager are far worse than poaching. But no one deserves to starve or go thirsty in a prison cell."

Francis reaches into his pack and takes out some rations, carefully pushing them into the cell. "There is always hope of redemption. Even if you are going to spend your life in a cell, you can still decide who you are going to choose to be. Sarenrae is the goddess of second chances, and yours can begin today if you wish it."

Turning to the others he says "We should take this man back to town as soon as we find the jailor with the keys. I don't care what his crimes are, no one deserves to be abandoned like this. He'll get better care in an official prison that some secretive place like this."

Shaking her head in frustration, Cira turns to the group. ”This doesn’t make any sense! Aroden? He’s been dead for at least 150 years, if not more.”

She turns back to the prisoner, narrowing her eyes at him. ”Who are you? Stop ignoring our questions!” Now realizing that growing dread from earlier was most likely caused by this… man in the cell, she shivered. As much as she wanted to help the Baroness and the town, she was beginning to regret coming down here.

"I know yah want t' help him, but like yah said we don' know what he's really done t' get locked up down 'ere." Grargath speaks to Francis without taking his eyes off the imprisoned man, Cira's panicked speech making him more and more nervous about the prisoner. "Besides, if this is some sort o' secret jail, I don' think any jailers we come across will be very frien'ly."

But then, why would the Baroness have sent them inside the tower if there was a secret prison for them to just stumble across? Surely she wouldn't want word of that getting out? Nothing was adding up. It's like they were missing something.

"I suppose we could try breakin' the door down?" Grargath muses, thinking aloud. " But if he's evil, tha's a risk I'm not sure I'm willin' t' take. We've given 'im water an' food, we should leave 'im fer now an' confront the Baroness about 'im when we get out o' here."

"I agree that we should just... leave him, for the time being. He's got some food and water now, and he's managed to survive down here without it for... some time." She felt very helpless. Something was off, but no one, including herself, could really place what it was.

"Normally I would insist that we help someone like this out, but... this is just too strange. We need more information."

She walks towards the end of the room, looking around for... well, anything at this point. What she had originally thought was going to be an educational exploration had taken a turn into much more. She wasn't sure what to keep an eye out for at this point.

"It looks like the room doesn't stop here, so maybe we just keep going forward for now?"

The prisoner grabs the food from Francis and moves out of sight. You hear an audible click as the cell door unlocks.

Marcus' paranoia ramps up as the man disappears with the food, the skyrockets as he hears the lock miraculously unlocks by itself.

He warily backs up muttering.

"Sure, feed the creepy pale guy locked in the long abandoned, probably haunted prison. This is going to be great."

Gripping his longsword he mentally prepares what little combat magic he know in case his sense of foreboding turns out accurate, while feverishly praying he is wrong.

You've got to be kidding me.

Cira blinks incredulously at the now unlocked door. "By Yuelral,” she whispers to herself, invoking a name she hadn’t spoken in quite some time. "What is going on here?"

She suddenly finds herself missing her mother. Her mother was all she had as a child, and that had been very hard on her. Her mother tried her best to convince the young half-elf that nothing was wrong with her, it was all those around them that were mistaken, but Cira had had a hard time believing that. How could a whole city of people shun her without question if she wasn't the problem?

She distinctly remembered her mother coming home late from work one day, when Cira was just 17 years old, with a small package, handing it to Cira with a smile. When Cira opened it, a small blue crystal attached to a leather cord fell into her lap. As she gazed at it in awe, her mother explained that she’d had it blessed for her by a priestess of Yuelral, who was not only a goddess of magic, but also the only elven god that readily embraced half-elves. Cira recalled her mother wrapping her in a hug and saying, “Just remember, you’re never alone. You’ll always have me and, if you’ll allow her, Yuelral looking out for you.”

She instinctively puts her hand to her chest, where the crystal used to lie. It had been ripped from her neck and lost during the altercation that had forced her to flee from home. She’d never been especially religious, but there was something about the crystal that had given her some sense of peace and acceptance. She wished she had it now. And her mother.

The mutterings of her companions pulls her back to the present and with a drawn out sigh, she walks slowly to the entrance of the large cell. ”Well… I suppose we might as well start here, yes?” Using her lit staff, she opens the door and peers inside.

Brandishing his shield defensively, Thomas says "This smells like a trap. Maybe a supernatural one. That would certainly explain why the man had an evil aura about him. He may not be a man at all."

Then Thomas shakes his head in confusion as he says "I cannot for the life of me figure out why in the Abyss he would want to take some of our food and water though. That doesn't make any sense. It certainly wasn't enough to cripple our expedition. And we are a stone's throw away from climbing back out of this town and resupplying if we did need more food and water."

Grargath looks at Kade and motions for him to follow, and quietly walks up to the the cell door next to Cira to try to get a look inside as well. But more importantly, he wanted to be ready whenever things went south, and he felt in his bones that they were about to. He didn't want to be caught far away from the action this time. Marcus' jaw dropped as the sorceress blithely wandered into what was obviously a trap. Regardless, Marcus was determined to back her play. That's what teammates and, perhaps, friends did. Seeing the remainder of the group ready to do the same Marcus nods at Grargath. "I've got your back, might even have a trick or two if things go badly. Might want to keep that new fancy dagger handy, just in case."

The room is empty, except for the rations that Francis handed the man.

Cira:
In the north wall is a secret door.

Studying the large area, she notices the new entryway, but little else. "There's another door in here, but otherwise... nothing. Not even the prisoner. No body, no old clothes. Just… nothing." Crouching down, she pokes at the remnants of Francis' rations. "Just kidding," she says dryly as she stands back up. "The food you gave away is still here Francis, if you want it back." She gives him a weak smile. Perhaps this wasn't really the time for jokes, but she needed to keep her nerves in check.

Making for the door, she inspects it for traps as she waits for her companions.

Francis smiles sadly. "We were lucky. If he had been a vengeful spirit he would have attacked us, and no bars would have stopped him. No armor would have either." His eyes glint with a sudden revelation. "That doesn't mean there might not be other ghosts down here though, and they might not all be so benign. Best be ready. "Aye?" The priest's words calm Grargath. He lowers his axe, but does not put it away. "I'm hopin' yer right. 'S good to know we were able t' help a soul in need." He also felt a small twang of guilt about yelling at what seemed now to be a harmless spirit who died painfully, but he wasn't about to voice that.

As he relaxes, Grargath notices Cira inspecting what had seemed to him to be an ordinary wall. Now that she had drawn attention to it, however, he saw the faint outline of a door. "Good catch, lass!" He moves into position near the door, ready to move on.

The secret door opens to reveal a narrow corridor. The room at the end of this hall contains a strange mechanical contraption of gears and chains. A large lever extends out the front of it.

Hovering above the machine is a small, roiling cloud of energy that periodically shoots of sparks of electricity into the air or along the chains.

Knowledge (the planes) DC 11:
The phenomena in front of you is actually a minor lightning elemental, likely brought here as a guardian of some sort. They are especially dangerous for opponents wearing metal armor.

M Human Monk (unchained) 2

Kade followed Grargath's lead and entered the cell with the others. He stalked the perimeters of the clearly empty room, alert and ready for trouble, much like the dwarf. There was an undeniable tepidness in his step, however; he was fairly sure there was little he could do against this foe.

Ghosts. Huh.

It wasn't easy to elicit shock from Kade Killough, but even so he was himself surprised at how quickly he adapted to the thought. They had all just witnessed a ghost. He had heard the stories as a boy; stories about the Witch Tower being haunted and worse. Perhaps that was why he was able to suppress his own beating heart and keep calm now. Perhaps some part of him never doubted that there was something deeply wrong about the tower.

Really though, it had more to do with Kade's practical mind set. He might not be able to top a ghost, but should an apparition attack them he was determined to not let it catch them off-guard. At worst, he hoped to distract it long enough for the others to flee. Seeing ghosts from this perspective, obstacles to be overcome, made them a whole lot more tangible.
Kade wondered if Grargath thought similarly, seeing him on high alert too, and couldn't help but think fondly of the dwarf.

He was very happy to hear Francis insist that the spirit had been set free through the offering of food and water though. It was, after all, likely a victim itself. Looking through the door into the next room, however, he stopped cold. A gaseous ball of lightning?

"Firestar? That's... not a ghost, is it?"

Smiling to herself at Grargath's praise, Cira opens the door and sticks her lit staff into the hallway. Creeping slowly forward, her free hand out and ready for surprise spell casting, she walks for a moment before freezing in place.

What is that?

Turning back, she points down the hallway towards the strange contraption. "Does anyone here know what that might be? It looks... unsafe."

She stares at it for a moment, then sighs. ”I’m… at a loss. I'm really not sure what we should do. It seems like there’s only three options.” She begins ticking them off on her fingers. ”One, we leave the lever alone and try the other passageway, maybe follow the rest of the ridge you guys saw to see where it goes. "That, or we just go pull the lever and see what happens."

Marcus ponders the room.

"I say we determine what this thing is first, as Francis probably has the right of it being in our way of further exploration. Although it does seem unlikely a hidden lever behind a ghost haunted cell is responsible for the tower collapsing; then again maybe it is."

That's probably going to be fairly unavoidable down here, honestly, based on their experiences so far.

”Well…” she replies slowly, trying to think everything through. ”I personally don’t know any magic that will help determine what that thing is. If someone here does, then by all means they should use it.” She stopped again, considering the last option, which was, of course, the more dangerous of the two.

She looks up at Marcus somewhat apologetically. ”I think I like your idea where we all just… attack it at once. If it’s a… thing, a ‘living’ entity, as it were, we can try to do as much damage to it as possible before it has a chance to come at us. If it’s not just a cloud of electricity, of course.”

Grargath nods, listening to his companions. "I'm all fer attackin' first an' gettin' th' upper han'," he agrees. "I got a few throwin' axes on me, I could toss one over there an' see wha' happens."

He retrieves one of his smaller axes and measures out how close he'd need to get to the cloud. A lot closer than he was comfortable with for something so unkown, that was for sure. "Or one o' us could try t' sneak past it and pull th' lever," he adds as an afterthought. "Course, if that don' work whoever's doin' th' sneakin's gonna get hurt." Grargath turns his attention back to the mysterious storm. "Person'ly, I'm leanin' towards doin' as much damage as possible, like yah said."

Marcus notices a pronounced shake in his hand, likely from the poison still affecting him.

"I am doubting I can hit much with my bow with this shake. Once we decide what we are doing, give me a moment first and I think I can help us all aim better.

whatever we decide, Marcus will try to inspire courage immediately prior to attacking the storm cloud or pulling the lever.

Turning to Kade, "I have a spare dagger should you need something to throw."

"I know a spell that can boost our skill at arms as well. If I may be so bold, I'd recommend we enhance ourselves, open with a salvo, and those who lack the ability to attack from a distance set themselves up to take advantage of the opportunity to attack while that...thing...flies by on it's way to those of us attacking." Francis says as he puts up his weapon and grips his holy symbol. "I would ask for guidance, and then bless us before striking with Sarenrae's holy fire."

If this seems like a good idea I would cast guidance on myself, bless on all of us, then use my domain ability to launch a firebolt at the thing when we attack in tandem. Switch to Morningstar and smash whatever is left.

Kade murmured his assent to the proposed plan: strike first and strike hard. The 'cloud' was an unknown variable; it might be significantly more dangerous than it appeared, and it didn't seem entirely harmless what with the lashes of electricity. Best to be careful and treat it as a threat.

However, his own role on the on-coming ranged onslaught was dubious. Kade shook his head at the knife offered from Marcus.

"No thanks. If it survives, I charge it."

The bard was thoughtful, but Kade didn't trust himself with ranged weaponry here. Instead he moved back, giving Francis, Cira and Grargath the necessary space to aim their respective ammunition. The narrow hallway ahead had informed his choice. It was too confined to let them all aim at the lightning ball effectively. But it also limited their foe's options. If it survived the initial attack (and that was a big if, Kade thought, looking at his companions), it would have to come down the hallway. That was when he would rush it, preventing it from reaching his comrades.

Don't know if the logistics of this are gonna get messy, but yeah. Delaying a surprise round attack until everyone's done firing, and then charging it when it comes for us. If I'm reading the rules right, charges can be done as a standard action if one only moves up to their normal speed, and moving through allies is permissible.
This is assuming it doesn't just stay put and shoot right back at us with some ranged attack of its own. If that's the case I'll hang back and help through aid another.

Going to need GM help here but with the narrow hall I'm wondering if we can have Cira and Francis fire over a crouching Grargath and Kade while Marcus sings. Then charge the melee fighters.

Grargath furrows his brow, looks down the hallway, and gives a grunt. "I'm thinkin' I'll need t' be a wee bit closer t' reach it. If it attacks, that'll put me first in it's path." He looks back at his companions. "Which I c'n handle jus' fine," he adds pridefully, if a little more for his own sake than theirs. "Once we're blessed, I'll move int' position," he says, nodding to Francis.

I sure hope this isn't where we all die.

Francis:
I'm having a difficult time finding where cleric's can automatically detect evil. Where are you seeing it?

Allies do not block line of sight for attacks.

So the plan is to bless up and then make ranged attacks?

seems to be the plan. Bless and Inspire Courage, ranged attacks and charge as necessary. Everyone else agree?

Looking back at the rules I think I have mistaken a cleric's aura for having the ability to detect evil.

Alright, I'll go ahead and open the attack. I'll assume Marcus activates Inspire Courage by the time I cast Firebolt. I'll cast Guidance, Bless, and then attack.

"Alright, here goes!" Francis says as he intones his first prayer. "Dawnflower, grant me your guidance." As he feels his pulse quicken with inspiration he lifts his hand above his head and prays again "Oh Everlight, bless us with your strength and courage!"

A warm glow spreads out from his hand to cover both himself and his companions with powerful radiance. As the spell settles, he can feel the Bardic Song from Marcus quicken his blood even more. I feel like my heart could beat right out of my chest! he thinks to himself.

He touches the Ankh hanging around his neck one more time and closes his eyes for a second, then opens them. Nodding at his fellow companions who will also be throwing spells and missiles at the enemy he moves his hand through a mystical pass and says "Tân gyda'r llid yr haul!"

Pulling her crossbow from her back, Cira takes a bolt from the quiver on her hip and loads it into the weapon. As she pulls back the lever, nestling the stock against her shoulder, she takes a deep breath and releases it slowly. ”Alright. Ready.”

Smiling confidently as Marcus’ words fill her with an odd sense of fearlessness, she aims her sight down the shaft of the crossbow. Her eyes close as Francis speaks, promptly feeling the warmth of his deity's power spread over her.

Huh. That’s interesting.

There wasn't time to ponder the implications, however. Her eyes snap open and she locks her gaze onto the hovering cloud of electricity, steadying her hands as she squeezes the trigger, sending a bolt flying through the air towards her target.

Following only applies if this thing actually survives Cira and Francis's volley and comes within Kade's charge range. He'll hang back and wait for it.

Marcus's voice reverberated throughout the cramped underground space and, eventually, within his companions. It was a feeling unlike anything Kade had experienced before. It wasn't like the music he'd heard the bard play at the inn; these tones were laced with power. Their effect was curious. He didn't feel altogether different; it wasn't like Francis's miracles. The cleric's spell had bestowed unto Kade a power that clearly wasn't his own. The spell added to and augmented Kade. Marcus's music on the other hand - as the tones seeped into him the former outlaw didn't so much feel different as just better. His breath followed the rise and fall of a tone. His heartbeat followed a rhythm. He felt enhanced, like some piece of machinery that had met lubricant for the first time.

Damn. Those are some mighty pipes, Marcus.

Action that potentially never happened. Hello, Mr Schrödinger.:
Indeed, they were such that the cloud creature could impossibly ignore the party. Surviving the missiles of Francis and Cira, it came down the hallway presumably in a foul mood. That was what Kade had been waiting for. Propelled by both bardic and clerical magic, he rushed down the hallway to meet the creature. His upper body kept low to the ground through momentum, almost making him look like some sort of horizontal diver. Having reached the gaseous ball he launched his fist forward, trying to get all the force from his darting legs into his arm.

Punching a cloud. Not what I expected to do when I woke up this morning.

Attack roll: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 19

Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6

Think I included all the relevant bonuses in there. Keep in mind that I have a -2 in AC for the next round.

Grargath feels Marcus' music echoing deep within his bones. He feels a confidence he hadn't felt before. Combined with his music and Firestar's blessing, how could they lose? Grargath quietly gets into position and hurls a throwing axe at the cloud. Hopefully, combined with everyone else, the storm wouldn't even have a chance to react.
