I ran the Shards of Sin Adventure Path a while back and was able to recieve the Shard of Greed and Shard of Pride through the chonicle sheet. When looking at the text, it states that when using the shard, you will have a penalty that is related to the shard used.
However, when looking inside the Adventure Path Book, I saw that if you have the correct ioun stone placed inside of the shard, the penalty would be negated. For example, to negate the penalty of the Shard of Greed, you would need to place a Pale Blue Rhomboid Ioun Stone into its socket, negating the bonus gained from the stone, but also negating the penalty of the Shard.
My question is this: It is not stated that you can use an ioun stone to negate the penalty in the chronicle sheet, but can you still use the ioun stone to negate the penalty, as it is part of the text inside the booklet?

Cao Phen, the shards in the adventure are different from the versions on the Chronicle shets. In the adventure, their ill effects are almost overpowering. Also, no-one can hold more than one. If you go through the adventure and gather the Chronicle sheets, you'll find yourself holding several shards, all of which give some irritating personality quirk.
My advice: so long as you are still playing through the AP, use the versions of the shards native to the adventure, suppressible with ioun stones. When you take your Chronicle sheets and play outside adventures, use the versions described on the Chronicles.
