I have Rennyn and Draeven heading up to find Tunuak. Katiyana's furs were illusional, she wore only the armor and the coif. Fenra, Anara and Sharadei what will you do? Is anyone taking Katiyana's head as discussed with them? Or is the group leaving the body where it lies?

Well I guess illusory furs for Fenra too then. Nothing loaded about that question. You always ask about the bodies after a fight. :P

Neither Rennyn nor Draeven plan to take the head. Wound't make much sense if Fenra is trying to disguise herself as Katiyana.

Unfolding and fastening her new cloak in place, Anara nods her agreement with Rennyns course of action and responds to Draeven I am, let's get going, nothing to be gained by stalling down here. Anara falls in behind the swordsmen, heading for the top of the rise but drops further to the back of the party as the other catch up.

Fenra disguises herself to look like Katiyana as best she can, asking the others to check the accuracy in absence of a mirror. She dons the cloak and amulet and with a wink at Draeven responds, I would expect a ring, something very ostentatious.

I will lead the way. If Katiyana was ostensibly going for help she would be in the lead. And even if she wasn't, Her being seen first will alleviate suspicion.

Darkness consumes the trail and beyond as the group progresses. Not even starlight penetrates the layer of cloud looming over the region and the only source of light remains Anara's enchantment. For several more minutes the trail continues to meander upwards. Gradually, it turns in an eastward direction looping back upon itself as it leads up to a plateau. At the point of egress, even Anara could safely guess Iqaliat (300 ft below) isn't more than five or six hundred feet further east.

There is not much to see. High above Iqaliat a white plain of ice and snow stretches out as far as the eye can see. Devoid of trees or any naturally occurring landmarks, it is hard to imagine anything living in such an environment - but this is Golarion, dangerous creatures lurk everywhere.

A steady southerly wind draws whisps of snow twisting and weaving across the plain, filling in gaps and footprints indiscriminately. Following close behind Fenra, and despite the wind's attempts, Draeven has little difficulty noticing the partial filled footsteps of two people leading east, one set leading back to the trail. With no other outward signs Draeven can safely determine these to be the footprints of Katiyana and Tunuak. A nagging thought is the fact the wind has not fluctuated in the slightest. That small primal side, long mastered by the Big Man, screams this is unnatural.

Ahead, a tiny flicker of light shines like a beacon. The tracks continue directly for this point and it isn't long before man sized stone piles can be seen to the north of the tracks. Set roughly 40ft apart, several inuksuk have been lined up to form an arc spanning roughly the same area of Iqaliat's length comes into view. Drawing closer, three different piles of stones, simple stacks, are set before and to the side of a taller column (10ft high) at the centre of the line of inuksuk . Carved like a lantern, somewhere within this stone marker a candle still burns. At its base lies a prone fur clad figure - Tunuak. Judging from the position of his body, it looks as though his legs gave out from under him and he'd collapsed where he stood.

Unlike Anara's efforts, Rennyn's divination does not as yet prove fruitful. Moving forward, the sorceress discovers transmutative auras as well as adjurations and faint conjurations. Of particular interest is the discovery that the stone lantern itself appears to have some magical property, also of a transmutative nature. Nearly all the auras are of moderate strength, several are upon the shaman and another upon the staff he carries.

Fenra's attempt to stabilize the old man doesn't go as she hoped as the fair oracle quickly realizes Tunuak is not injured but asleep!

I should add the Inuksuk are of varying heights, some are as tall as a person, other about three feet in height.

While I work on these, maybe someone wants to take a better look at the Inuksuk? Give me another moment here...

Anara maintains her magical detection spell as she moves through the auras in the following order (unless all can be done at once):
- Transmutation on stone lantern

I don't know, tie the man up, chop off his head, wake him and ask questions instead of just pilfering through all of his stuff...I mean, the last time I rushed though it all I fudged the encounter :/

As Tunuak sleeps, Anara continues to examine the old shaman's items. The staff in her hand she recognizes as a useful tool for travelers, a Staff of Journeys. She'd seen such an item before in Kalsgard but didn't quite have enough coin to even consider it. The next item which catches her attention is an embroidered capote just beneath his fur coat. Based on the pattern of the abjuration, she recognizes this as a kind of cloak of resistance. Heeding the paladin's repeated request, Anara concentrates on the man's gloved hands. No visible aura there. In examining the fur coat, Anara notes fainter auras beneath which had been partially masked by those more visible.

Pilfering his stuff? Anara picked up a staff laying on the ground and can see his cloak. Rennyn asked if he had a ring on. I was waiting for the answer to that question, before I did anything else, but that was not forthcoming with no explanation as to why, until your last post about him wearing gloves. Which I find perplexing, that he would be wearing gloves, but I digress. But ok...

Draeven removes his manacles from his pack, strides over and slips them, onto the old man's wrists, locking them tightly. He then removes the cloak and roughly rummages the shaman's belongings, removing them, and either handing off interesting things to Anara or Rennyn or tossing uninteresting things unceremoniously into the snow.

Yes because those are the restrictions of initiative. Rennyn and Tunuak were able to speak because they "won" init.

Having known Fenra for as long as he has, and after having spent so much time together these past months, Rennyn reads her body language. The paladin extinguishes Suishen and slides it into its scabbard.

Fenra has no difficulty halting old shaman's journey toward the river of souls.
A more thorough search of his belongings turns up several potions which, between Anara and the fair oracle, identify as useful in healing the sick (1x barkskin, 2x lessor restoration, 3x cure light wounds). Other than his furs, there is a pouch containing some mundane items; basic spell components and dried strips of meat haphazardly mixed together. Around Tunuak's neck tied by a simple leather thong is a jade token carved in the shape of a leaf with a single blue dot painted at the center. The symbol is instantly recognized as that carried by Gozreh's followers. Any other valuables the shaman may be in possession of may be assumed are kept in his dwelling.

So yeah...:
...I'm not sure how we can have a productive conversation when we have such a disparate view of both the rules and the events that just took place.

Combat and damage is abstract by definition. The wound descriptions are Chris' not mine. My view of HP loss, as is indicated by my use of the injury/strain house rule, is that only certain attacks and/or the last attack that sends someone into the negatives is an actual physical wound. Describing every hit as blood spraying, limb removing or disembowelling is a little much for my suspension of disbelief. Do you really think an elderly, prone and grappled man can realistically survive three slashes from a magical flaming katana?

Despite repeated questions, no confirmation has been forthcoming that Tunuak was indeed successfully manacled. He apparently tried to cast a spell which provoked one of Rennyn's attacks, so I would say that the evidence points to him not being bound. Draeven's stated actions even included the point that he still held the manacles. Can you point me to where this was contradicted?

Do you know how to knock out someone in game?

Tactically it makes zero sense. Everything you suggest. Take a -4 to hit to deal non-lethal damage? Ready and action or delay? Or in other words lose my full attack or wait until after he has acted, meaning depending on what he does may mean I get no attack at all. A successful cast defensively and no AoO for Rennyn. The only one capable of even making one at that point.

No one has addressed my assertion with initiative either. Tunuak calling for init means he intended for combat. Rennyn reacted to that. If he didn't intend combat then no init was needed.

And yeah, speaking on someone else's turn is fine, after you have acted in the first round. Its not really that hard of a concept. Immediate actions are another action that you can perform on someone else's turn but they can't be done until you have acted either.

Anyhow...

Rennyn sighs. Is he dead? Then he isn't slaughtered. He isn't bound. Draeven's manacles lay there in the snow. Is he an old man? Is he old? Is he a man? Is he evil? Can you say any of these things beyond the shadow of a doubt? Given we just met a young human girl who did not have an aura of evil about her. And yet she was neither a young girl, nor human, and was most definitely evil.

As Draeven went to restrain him for our protection he resisted with lethal intent. Given the levels of deception at play here, and ever since we left Sandpoint, I honestly find your naivety most alarming.

Instead of complying with Draeven's order, or explaining himself, he attacked us. What would you have me do? Allow him to potentially bring harm upon us?

Clearly he was not so confused as to not be able to conjure magic. If his wits were about him to do that, no simple task, then surely he had the ability to recognize the situation and react my appropriately. He chose his actions and they had consequences. I offered to stay my blade and he responded with spell casting.

I will not apologize for defending my companions against unwarranted aggression.

Of course there is no evidence. What should have been included in earlier posts but wasn't - 'cause I'm awesome! is this: Manacles were attempted to be placed but weren't. Before Draeven could complete his task, the shaman woke, resisted and combat ensued. The result of the shaman's attempt to attack was he sustained enough damage to be put into the unconscious and dying phase.
He has since been stabilized by Fenra. All of his magical items have been removed and identified. He remains in appearance as he did upon your first meeting. No evil aura had manifested about him when he was alive and no magical means have been found to hide such.

The following mysteries remain:
Why was Tunuak fast asleep at the top of the ridge when he was supposed to be conducting ceremonies to protect Iqaliat?
Was he actually asleep or just faking?
What was Tunuak actually doing up here?
Why would an unarmed Shaman suddenly wake up and attempt to attack a well armed and coordinated group without provocation?
Was Tunuak acting confused or actually confused? Why?
Why was there a fiend, disguised as a female apprentice, working with Tunuak?
Who was this fiend if not Katiyana?
What happened to the real Katiyana?
If the old man is not evil, did he know of his apprentice's true nature?
If they were working together, why? To what end?

Quite honestly this series of encounters play like the Disney Star Wars sequel movies. :P

There is evidence to him being manacled. Chiefly by you stating he is "grappled?" and then arguing that being bound does not inhibit spell casting. Then there is the issue of the surprise round. If he is sleeping, how does he react to Draeven's attempt before he made it? If he is faking then it raises other issues (addressed below). Clearly the goal posts are moving from post to post.

GM KoKyu wrote:

So you are admitting Tunuak's response was to attack? Again, this raises more questions (addressed below) and somewhat vindicates Rennyn.

So you are claiming here that Tunuak isn't evil. Meaning that he attacked out of confusion (whether by being old and grumpy, having just awoke or some as of yet magical compulsion that was not detected by detect magic even though active spells are detectable) or was faking and attacked for some other inexplicable reason. You could claim that he is just neutral (holy symbol of Gozreh) but then Rennyn's detect evil should have determined his evil intent.

Let's see, tired from chanting all night? So not faking, but manages to wake up ahead of Draeven attempting to put the manacles on and decides the best course of action is to attack a heavily armed group while completely disadvantaged. Seems highly improbable at best. Faking it? Why would he do that and then attack the group? Given he is supposed to be not evil then this makes no sense. Knocked out by magic? Not detected by detect magic. Shouldn't be. Knocked out by poison? Katiyana was carrying away what could be his supper dishes. But why poison him and then come to find us? So that we would go up and kill him and she could blame us for his death? What would lead her to believe that is something that we would do? Given she hasn't met us and Rennyn has a "Hi! I am a Paladin" name tag. Very convenient for her that he awakes exactly when he does and in the manner he does if that is the case. Even if she somehow thinks this is a possibility, why send the demons to attack us? She could just have come down and told us the same story she tried on the path. If we kill Tunuak as is her desire, she wins. If we don't then use the demons to attack us. Her and the demons at the same time, with her not standing within blade reach or a bona fide demon slayer, seems a better plan.

Each scenario has issues (see above).

GM KoKyu wrote:

If he is not evil, then he was warding off/appeasing the spirits I guess. How exactly? Dunno. Does it matter? Not that I can tell.

GM KoKyu wrote:

Good question. Either the fiend replaced Katiyana tonight and Tunuak just happened to fail all his saves to realize it, meaning the fiend has incredible coincidental timing and incredible luck if she wasn't present when we arrived, OR she has been here for longer and then Tunuak's failures are even more pronounced. Even more so since the entire village would presumably interact with not Katiyana over a longer time and they all failed to notice? Or he knows she is evil, but works with her to do evil things, but doesn't have evil intent that can be detected even when actively doing evil things.

GM KoKyu wrote:

How could anyone possibly know? Evil Tunuak would probably. Not evil Tunuak, who does evil stuff, would likely too. Not evil Tunuak who is fooled by illusion, clearly wouldn't.

GM KoKyu wrote:
What happened to the real Katiyana?

Never existed? Tunuak mentioned he had an apprentice earlier so no. Dead or incapacitated maybe? Again, who would know. (see above)

GM KoKyu wrote:

All scenarios have major issues.

----------------------------------

I could go on but the bottom line is it my gut feeling that the criss-crossing inconsistencies are the result of "winging it" as opposed to following the AP, or, as I suspect this is not the AP at all and is your own creation, not having a cohesive plot/plan.

The demons being summoned (disappearing after death) raises many questions about the how (no easy feat to get that many high level demons), and when (summons usually last rounds/level, clearly not enough time to summon them all and have them travel to our location), and where (we can hear Tunuak chanting hundreds of feet up on top of the cliff but the summoning happens much closer and yet we hear nothing), and who (see previous) that I cannot begin to come up with a rational explanation. Seems more like I mentioned summoned demons would disappear, and bingo. Done.

It also seems like Tunuak and Katiyana's relationship/story might be retroactively applied straight from Stacy's theory about Tunuak finding and secretly raising a demon from the goodness of his heart. Only to be betrayed by her or himself turning on his village? Clearly we should have worked this all out from his behavior during our brief interactions with him and having never met Katiyana before.

I could be wrong about all of it. Guess we will see.

Not disapproving of actions taken so far, Anara gives the paladin time to warm Fenra to the current situation and retrieves, from one of the folds of her cloak, a small vial of liquid (Potion of CMW). Kneeling beside the Shaman, the sorceress cradles the old mans head in her left arm and, biting the cork free, raises the potion to his lips with her right. She trickles the potion down his throat slowly so as not to make him cough it out and she administers it all without incident. Continuing to support his head, Anara replaces the stopper, returns the vial to its pocket and turns Draeven's way, nodding toward his sword. Best keep that blade in hand for another few minutes.

High Ice

It takes but a moment for the potion to do its it work and then Tunuak inhales deeply. Blinking, he looks around taking in the group once more. A hint of confusion remains in his eyes, more so when seeing Katiyana standing nearby and the old shaman is about to speak, but quickly shuts his mouth.
Tunuak remains manacled, pinned, prone and is taking the group quite seriously.
