Ravenscraeg

The day is still young when the group begins the arduous task of moving their rewards to a central location within the Ravenscraeg fortress. Consolidation occurs in the main hall and the resulting pile of items is more than everyone can safely carry on their own. Throughout, the imprisoned monk gives no impediment to the process, choosing to watch or listen quietly to the goings on. (I will need to know what his fate will be.)
Up top, there is no sign of the missing Wodes. Much to Spivey's relief, even the number of ravens loitering around the tower has dwindled. Making numerous trips, (fluff, Draeven can probably do it two :P) the group manages to get everything down the cliffside stairs and onto the horses well before midday. (I trudged back through the thread, the group arrived on horse back which are at the bottom of the cliff. Am also going to rule the journey back to Kalsgard can be managed in one trip, encumbrance be damn!)
The trip back to Kalsgard is long, taking the remainder of the day and well into the evening. Fortunately, the group manages the trek without encountering anything more than a few wagon loads of travelers and carts returning from Kalsgard's markets. There are some looks of interest, especially once the group reaches the gates. At first the guards look like they might delay the group for inspection, however dropping Flynn's name gets the group through unmolested.
221 Johnas Street is as you'd left it, the three story villas illuminated by frequent lamps line the street in quiet luxury. As the lights of Flynn's villa come into view, there is relief. Had something malignant occurred, the home would most certainly be dark and perhaps city guards posted. Inside, Flynn's staff look a little worse for wear. A couple unfamiliar faces assist the group with their horses, a couple familiar ones sport bandages. It is obvious there was an attack last night and not everyone survived. Rushing inside to find Ameiko, the group finds their Tian friend seated next to the fireplace amidst Flynn's chaotic study, the man himself, seated in his favorite high backed armchair, is visibly bruised.
Oh thank Desna! You're all back! Ameiko rushes to greet the party's return in obvious relief. You all look tired, what happened? Are you hun... Ameiko's welcoming words are cut short when her dark eyes fail to find Kenan in the party. Putting a hand to her mouth she shudders, No! No! Tell me he's downstairs! As tears well up Shalelu stands, concern on her face and the elf's large eyes seeking answers.

hey guys, I'm camping in crown land, no reception. Came into town for ice and doing a little reading....

Anara notices Jeryn struggle to identify a ring, besides a couple of other items in the pile of loot in front of him. Indicating the silver ring Jeryn is holding, she offers Let me take a look at anything you're unsure of, I know I've seen a ring like that one before.

No worries, you've pretty much caught up!

Glancing over the wizard's shoulder, Anara peeks at the magical ring, Huh, yeah, I've seen something similar in a boutique back in Magnimar. Hey Shar! What was the name of that place that had that thing? You know the one with the sign out front?
Gilded Feather
Yeah! The Gilded Feather! If I remember correctly, under certain conditions the ring sends a dagger of arcane energy at an enemy in parallel with an attack. Kind of like having your own little backstabber piggybacking your sword. You see, its these images that give it away: the fur symbolizes either a hunting animal or prey, the feather is the flight or path of the strike, bone represents danger and the ivory piece there is the virtuous protection keeping the wearer from the path of danger. Cool, but waaay out of our price range! (This is a ring of Swarming Stabs)

Seeing the Ioun Stone, Anara once again chimes in, Wouldn't you know, the same boutique had a guy selling a stone like that. Not the same color but an Ioun Stone. The thing with that stone was it didn't orbit, the user had to implant it. Kind of gross. Is that aura abjuration? After a little bit of back and forth, the underlying property of the stone is revealed.

This is a Nacreous Gray Sphere:

Aura: moderate abjuration; CL 12th Slot none; Price 10,000 gp; Weight —
Description
This stone protects you from ability score penalties from aging and you cannot be magically aged. Any penalties you have already incurred remain in place. Bonuses still accrue, and you still die of old age when your time is up. If you lose the stone or its abilities are negated in some way, all age and penalties apply immediately.
Construction: Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, bear’s endurance, creator must be 12th level; Cost 5,000 gp

As for the Spadone, Anara recognizes the runes as a variant for Giver of Frost. With the mystery of the runes cleared, the great sword's value is seen. (This is a +1 Golden Frost Great Sword, +1d6 cold damage)

Rennyn is both relieved to see Ameiko and concerned at the obvious signs indicating a recent attack upon the household. Before he can ask his own questions, he takes Ameiko in an embrace and confirms the passing of their friend and comrade. He fought valiantly and honorably until the very end. We shall hold a celebration of his life and cremate his remains according to his wishes.

Still hugging Ameiko, Rennyn looks to Shalelu and asks softly, What of the others? How is everyone here? It looks as though you had your own troubles?

Pulling back a bit to look into Ameiko's eyes he adds, I am sorry for not being here to defend you. I tried to warn you in your dreams but you did not yet sleep. Regardless, it is I who was wrong. It is my sworn duty to protect you. It will not happen again, this I swear!

If Flynn is present...

I am in your debt for helping protect Ameiko and the others. I am very sorry for your losses. Please tell us what we can do to try to make amends to the families of those you may have lost.

At a more appropriate time, Rennyn informs everyone, including and especially Flynn, as to everything we have uncovered with regards to the Rimerunners Guild, Thorberg/Kitmandatsu, Snorri and the ninjas and their network. We will pass over all relevent evidence we possess as well as the captured monk.

May I also present Lute and Ulf, rescued from the clutches of Kitmandatsu. They can both verify all that I have said.

Also rescued are sisters Anara and Sharedei. They had attempted their own rescue of Lute, but now pledge to assist us in our cause.

At the quick introduction from Renyn, Anara nods and introduces the sisters more formally As Renyn said, I am Anara Sattar and this is my sister Sharadei. We found ourselves in a bad position while looking for Lute, and were fortunate enough that this group of travelers she opens her arms to include the whole group she had arrived with, were on the same track as us but faring better. They bested our captors and then freed us. Naturally, we accompanied them through the remainder of the Ravenscraeg fortress and, finding our skills complimented theirs nicely, agreed that we would remain traveling companions to the conclusion of their journey.

Turning her body away from her traveling company and squaring it to the new faces in the room the sorceress continues, Although we know little of the rest of you, and you even less of us, we are pleased to meet you.
It seems, however, that you may be able to use our aid here as well, please feel free to put us to task where it would help the most while we are in town.

221 Johnas Street

The group's arrival and exchange of news draws the rest of Fenra's family to Fynn's study. Koya takes a seat on the side of Fynn's large chair, her warm smile for the affluent man suggestive of a growing friendship while a tousled Sandru and Alison arrive together.
Ameiko, somewhat consoled by Rennyn's words, wipes at stemming tears, Do not lay so much blame on yourself. There is nowhere in Kalsgard safer than Fynn's and you know it! Ameiko pokes the paladin's chest half-heartedly, We all knew the risks of this venture before leaving Sandpoint. Its just. Well, after Brinewall our group felt invincible. We let our guard down is all.

The story of what befell 221 Johnas Street is shared, with everyone contributing here and there as the need be. After the party had left for Ravenscraeg, those remaining unconsciously separated. Sandru and Alison spent most of their time talking shop - caravan's, merchandise, inventories and the like. Bored, Shalelu took to the library to see what she could find on the Crown of the World. Ameiko and Koya spoke with Fynn at length about Ameiko's father. Anything Fynn could offer about her family's time before Sandpoint was of interest. When evening rolled around Shalelu and Ameiko retired to Ameiko's room, but didn't sleep, choosing to while the time away in 'conversation'. Koya and Fynn shared nightcaps in the study leaving Sandru and Alison to continue their business. Is that a blush on Alison's cheeks?

Omoyani's attack occurred late in the night. Two of Fynn's sentries fell to poisoned darts then had their throats slit in the courtyard. A guard was garroted inside. Another found half burnt on the stairs with a single shuriken protruding from his forehead. When Omoyani appeared out of thin air, she surprised Fynn and Koya in the study. Koya suspects the woman's magic ran out, Because what fool cancels an invisibility spell before using it to completion? And, if I read that wench's eyes right, Omoyani, is that the floozies' name? looked equally surprised.

Bravely, Fynn confronted the intruder brandishing a sword from his cane while Koya called upon Desna's for assistance. Omoyani was too fast though, launching several shuriken at the two before closing the distance. Outmatched and singed, it was all the two could do but retreat to the adjoining library. The noise was enough to wake the entire house and it didn't take long for Omoyani to topple Fynn with several blows. Omoyani was about to run him through with her dagger when Ameiko and Shalelu burst in, swords drawn.

Dressed only in their nightshirts, the two women quickly flanked Omoyani but neither could touch the intruder. Ameiko sang as Shalelu busied the intruder with blows.

When more of Fynn's guards arrived on Sandru's heels, Omoyani fought like a caged animal from the top of the table and leapt off bookcases. She took her frustrations out on the guards, poisoning some as though by magic, effortlessly beating the stuffing out of others. She knocked Sandru out trying to get to Ameiko suffering Shalelu's blade in exchange. In the end, Omoyani's wounds caught up with her and what could have been a deadly surprise attack, fell apart thanks in part to Fynn's larger than normal apartment, loyal security and talented house guests. Had Omoyani chanced upon the right room at the right time, things would have been a lot more serious for the group. But as it turned out, Omoyani's planning failed her.

Only Ameiko escaped untouched. Koya used what healing magic Desna could offer, bandaging the others. Treating poison is taxing and my reserves aren't what they used to be. Clerics have been sent for and should arrive in the morning.

Fynn politely waves off Rennyn's offer of restitution. You have done this town a great service Master Rennyn. Uncovering an institution's corruption and infiltration by no less than an Oni straight out of Minkai, is heroic work! If anyone owes a debt of gratitude it is all of Kalsgard! Fynn's eyebrows raise, I'd wouldn't be surprised if King Sveinn Blood-Eagle himself has something to say. Fynn rubs his chin in thought muttering something about securing assets before news reaches the king. The sight however of a ragged Lute Haggersly sends Fynn into a good hearted chuckle. My, my Lute you look more worse for wear than I.
The foul smelling merchant smiles, raising his arms in a kind of what- can-you-do shrug. I've definitely felt better.
Right you are! I will send one of my boys with news to your wife and daughters immediately. In the meantime, I insist you spend the night, and bathe. Fynn waves a hand in front of his nose, A good meal, some rest and a clean set of clothes will set you right. You and I will talk business in two days time. After the dust settles, I foresee you playing an instrumental role in the Guild's reorganization! Fynn finishes with a knowing wink in Alison's direction. The secretary will also have much to do in the future.

Longish post, I will pause, let comments fly and add more tomorrow!

I'm a little confused about the timeline. This should be later in the day after the nighttime attack by Omoyani the previous night. Clerics should have had time to arrive this morning already no?

Draeven raises a single eyebrow at Anara's comment. There is a long pause before the big half-orc replies in his deep gravely voice, Indeed. It seems that everyone here was busy... getting busy... while we were gone.

Draeven does the mental list, Koya and Fynn. Shandru and Alison. Ameiko and Shalelu?!? The last pairing causes him to glance at Rennyn for his reaction. None forthcoming, busy indeed, he confirms to himself.

Realizing he has not heard from his little friend, Draeven calls out, Spivey? You ok?

I would also very much like to speak with you tomorrow if you have time.

He gives a nod to everyone else present before retreating from the room.

The wizard goes and sits with Kenan's remains for the rest of the evening, washing the body, tidying up his clothes and braiding his beard perfectly.

You should feel no guilt about recent events. We left them as safe as we could in our continuation of duty, finding the guide. We also removed a fairly large threat to our future success in the process.

On a more "Fenra" note she adds with a wink, Besides I am sure you are more than "worthy" and leaves to let Rennyn blush in peace.

Fynn stands to return Rennyn's bow with a cordial bow of his own, hand over heart. Your devotion to your duty to your friends is unwaivering Master Rennyn. I would be grateful for your continued presence as protector over us. Turning to the rest, I'm afraid the hour is late and I should retire, if you would excuse me. Fynn slowly makes his way out of the study, offering each member of the party an honest smile or touch of gratitude and relief, Come Master Jeryn, let me escort you to your task. Quietly Fynn, checks with the wizard, If there is anything my house can provide to aid you, we are at your disposal.
As the patron retires for the evening, Alison turns to the newcomers, You must be tired, if you would permit me, I can show you to your rooms. Then, having seen to Anara and Sharadei, she too discreetly excuses herself, returning to her room alone and leaving the group to their own routines. (The implication here is that you should all feel like this is just as much your home as Fynn's. Feel free to do what you want; raid the fridge, order take out, stay up all night...)
Draeven's call to the tiny blonde does not have far to travel as she is discreetly hovering by his side. Hmm? Who me? Oh, yes! Spivey's eyes are wide with the look of a runner's high, I mean, can you believe that? She waves her arm around the study, There. Is. So. Much treasure! Apparently, the lyrakien has not the insight shared by the others in the group but has had her thoughts distracted by other things. Shiny things. Spivey shakes her head in wonder. We need to celebrate, you know?! Like just a little bit cause its late and I don't but I would love a drink! I mean it's not that I've never had one! A drink! Cause I have! A drink or two is no big deal. I've had one before so its not like I've never had a drink in my life but there are times when you just have to have one and this is definitely one of those times! Don't you agree? You know what I mean?! Say, if Fenra's going out and you're going to follow, perhaps I could tag along!? I mean if that's alright. You wouldn't even know I was there. Well, no. That's not right. You would know I was there because I'd be going with you. But no one else would know I was there. The tiny blonde's excitement is palatable. It might also be shock.

The evening goes as expected. With the arrival of morning, Fynn's staff ensures no one is left wanting for anything and even Fenra feels rested after her night of exercising her demons. Around the large table in the library papers and maps have been laid out. Talk of the upcoming trip is optimistic, there is a large budget after all. But the general feeling is, this isn't a journey that can be started anytime soon. As the group has only been in Kalsgard for less than a week (three days I think) there is still a lot of preparation ahead. Ulf wastes no time and busies himself reviewing lists of needed supplies started by Alison. None of the supplies have been procured at this point. According to Ulf, a minimum of four wagons equipped with large wheels and winterized will be needed. Unfortunately, the wagons in Sandru's caravan are far from suitable for the trek. Sandru is not pleased by the news. Despite the caravaner's gloom, new ones have been ordered (Heavy Wagons) from the Oak Quarter and can be ready in two months at four times the price. The work will be rushed though and quality may suffer. Done right, a single wagon takes almost two months to be constructed properly; making four will take up to six months. Similar wagons might be had in as little as two weeks if the group wants to purchase used from another caravan master. Used transport does not mean it is good however. Each wagon will be loaded with enough to sustain, 10 as well as sixteen pack animals, for a minimum of 3 months. Throwing all of this together in a rush isn't ideal. (Feel free to check my math: Ameiko, Rennyn, Draeven, Fenra, Anara, Sharadei, Shalelu, Spivey, Ulf and Uksahkka plus 4x4 animals pulling wagons with over 16,000lbs of goods). Ulf also warns that leaving this late in the season is dangerous, wise caravan masters depart in Desnus (It is nearing Rova.)
As for the journey, not everyone is committed to going. By now, Jeryn has made his intentions known to the party. He will be staying in Kalsgard overseeing the renovation of Ravenscraeg into an Academy of learning. The wizard's announcement over dinner comes as a surprise to those who did not take part in the fortress's liberation. Mixed responses of support and sadness from Ameiko are expressed. But the news opens the door for some wavering feelings. Koya is not sure she will be able to endure such a trip. Old age and the question of her own mortality has crept into her thoughts of late, even before their arrival in Kalsgard. It has already been noted the old cleric has made a fast friend of Fynn. Sandru's melancholy of the day lifts at his mother's revalation. While not thrilled about giving up the caravan he's known is entire life, he sees a chance to grow, With the upcoming reorganization of the Rimerunners Guild, there is an excellent opportunity here! If we play our cards right, we can secure this end of the route to Minkai for years to come. Sandru has already begun working with Alison and is looking forward to their meeting with Lute in the morrow. Ameiko is understandably taken aback by all the changes. While it is true she has gone for long periods without having Sandru or Koya as they traveled the roads of Varisia, Ameiko has been a life long friend of the two. Jeryn's decision has also pained her - she will need time to digest this. Shalelu remains quiet throughout.

There is no rush to leave Kalsgard. The group can spend the winter at 221 Johnas Street in safety, sell what needs to be sold, make purchases of custom items, (Given enough time, just about anything (magical) can be found or brought into Kalsgard), research spells etc.

As the budgets and timelines for the expedition are laid out to everyone assembled, Rennyn's face begins to harden. No longer able to hold back he interrupts the discussion in a firm voice, Six months to build wagons? Wait eight months to depart? And then a three month, minimum, journey? You are saying we are to delay our departure and arrive in Minkai in a year's time? He leans over the table, both fists pressed into the hard surface and stares at the assembled documents and shakes his head in disbelief. Our enemies know exactly where we are and we are to sit here waiting for attack after attack?

Removing Koya and Sandru? I'm not sure I'm in favor of that. There are in game reasons for them to always stay with the caravan. Same for most of the NPCs really.

Addressing none in particular, Anara asks Is there nothing we can do to further our cause, right now, other than depart for Minkai? I'm sorry if I'm missing something but I'm still putting the pieces together of the events leading you to this point.

Doing things like refurbishing used wagons, and leaving someone to look after selling items we cant wait for, should knock weeks and months off of that timeline, shouldn't it?

The guide leans back and searches the eyes of those gathered as he gathers his thoughts, Ravenscraeg was well stocked, we could begin with those stores. I'm not so sure about the feed. Nodding to himself Ulf speculates further, Perhaps. What we have to remember about crossing the Crown is that risk is always there. The crossing isn't always about getting there fast, its surviving the trek. The main advantage with brand new equipment is it minimizes breakdowns. Now, I can lead you down the shortest path, but even the quickest route can take months if we are constantly stopping. Ulf scratches his chin, If we go with used, I'd want to be traveling with experienced men capable of making repairs quickly. That would mean more men and a larger caravan. Course, even experienced men will find the work perilous when the Morozkos is upon them. Seeing Ameiko's frown turn to a confused sneer Ulf translates, Morozkos is the Hungry Storm. They are blizzards, but not like anything you'll ever see here in Kalsgard. The Morozkos blows tens times as fierce, it will bury the way forward in snow faster than your eyes can find it. The Morozkos consumes all in its path, freezing man and beast where they stand. Some Morozkos can bury a wagon in a few hours out in the open.
Think category 3 hurricane but with blinding snow, sub-artic temperatures and lasting days. It is very dangerous, always deadly and is why caravans delay their departures until Desnus. The Crown is plagued by Morozkos during the winter months. There are men who have survived, naturally. But they lost everything walking out; wagons don't roll when their animals are frozen. Raising a skeptical eyebrow Ulf asks, How deep are your pockets? Can we equip the animals and everyone else with enchantments?
Fynn is about to answer when...

How do you know? A somewhat spooked Koya asks Rennyn out of left field. How do you know there will be attack after attack if you stay here? I thought you took care of them when you went to Ravenscraeg, did this Kimandatsu tell you more would come? Are there others like her here on this side of the world? I thought these Oni creatures were from Minkai?

We'd spoken about leaving Koya and Sandru behind around the same time as discussing what to do with Jeryn and Kenan, this has changed then?

Fenra is somewhat tied to Koya, although we could work around that I suppose if she stayed. But I also thought she was eager for one last grand adventure and this was likely going to be a one way trip for her. Also as a caravan master I assume Sandru has some knowledge about fixing wagons etc. I am also surprised that Koya, who decided on an epic, dangerous journey and lived much of her life in a caravan is now also now spooked by the prospect of being attacked.

Fenra is surprised at Koya's decision to stay. An old woman now, Koya had expressed much excitement at the thought of the epic, final adventure that awaited her.

I have magic that can assist with repairs when needed. I can also use that magic to ensure that any wagons we do purchase start out in excellent condition. Are there no caravan masters that have decided they have left it too late but have what we need already prepared? Or can be persuaded that they have left it too late?

We have been attacked every step of the way on this journey. We have been followed unerringly everywhere we go. No amount of trickery or precaution has worked. Magical or mundane. We have been ambushed in the wilds and in the city. They attacked this very house the night before last.

That raven is still unaccounted for. Who knows how many more agents there are in Kalsgard or on their way.

As stated by Fenra, she is tied to Koya. Sandru is the caravan leader. Ulf is a guide. They are not the same thing.

Ulf is initially stunned at Fenra's admission to freely using magic. That old Ulfen prejudice works itself out however and over the span of a few breathes the guide slowly nods. Ok. Not a common skill for around here but we can work with that. Fynn, if you could work any angles that would get us our transport faster, I think it will put a few minds at ease. Fynn glances in Alison's direction and his secretary makes a few notations. Now all that remains is ensuring the well being of the animals. Ordinary blankets won't save them from a Morozkos. Beyond the Rimethirst Mountains is a village called Iqaliat. Getting that far is a challenge, yet if we can trade our horses for Musk Ox there, we'll be in much better shape for the crossing. Ulf doesn't look like he's joking.
Between Fenra and Koya, even the rattiest piece of wagon can be made whole, check. Supplies will take a week to put together. Some of the group has magical wards to protect them from the weather but not everyone, right? What will they do?

Koya regards Rennyn with a level eye, What's in the past, is. Down the road, we'll see. The generic caravan proverb is a sign she's not willing to argue with the paladin.
I had thought of casting augury or commune to help Koya but she's quite limited and Spivey's access is a few days away.

I'll bet you a dollar that Ulf himself uses magic. :P

Draeven, Rennyn and Sharadei are covered. Ulf and Shalelu can cast endure elements on themselves. Between Koya, Fenra and Anara I'm sure someone will have access to endure elements communal to help cover the rest. Supplemented with wands or what not.

Why would we have to get to Iqaliat to trade for musk ox? Surely a prosperous city of 70,000 plus souls built around trade, including trade conducted over the crown of the world, would have their own supply if they be the superior draft animal for the journey?

Those that don't learn from the past, are doomed to repeat it, Rennyn replies to Koya. It is either hopelessly optimistic, or dangerously naive, to think that we have prevailed against the forces that oppose us.

We may have defeated a strong adversary, and key player in Kalsgard, but surely you don't believe Kitmandatsu to be final puppetmaster?

Childish Quasit...Rabble-Rousing +28| Fluff +25 ....| RAW -29 | Poor form +33 Watch order: Draeven, Rennyn, Anara, Fenra, Sharadei

Koya smiles and nods in agreement with Rennyn's wisdom but adds, In Kalsgard, yes. Kimandatsu and her ilk have been defeated. As for beyond Kalsgard, you don't have to argue with me! Without a doubt there will be more of these Oni and still more minions set against us on the road ahead. I firmly believe the further we go, the closer we get to Minkai, the more danger will most assuredly be set against us. But here? How do we know there is another puppetmaster in Kalsgard? Kimandatsu's clan is dismantled. Her minions, if there are any left, will be disorganized and ineffective. Possibly some remain, but Omoyani didn't bring these others with her? She came alone. Why? What threat remains in Kalsgard? If it is the threat of an attack from Wodes, I'm sure we will persevere, Koya gives a quick look around to acknowledge the capabilities of everyone, There was no evidence to suggest Wodes reported to anyone other than those at that damned Fortress. Koya traces the sign of Desna over her heart in memory of Kenan. Consider this. If we can pause here, in relative safety, then why push forward to a place we know is set against us?

Ulf's nods almost equal each of Rennyn's words, Absolutely. Yes. You are right and we could Master Rennyn, however horses are faster over the Rimethirst range. Muskox are slower yet are remarkably better adept to the cold. As an aside Ulf adds, I'm not 100% confident even a Muskox can withstand a Morozkos, but we will try. Returning to the more familiar Ulf continues, Beyond Iqaliat is difficult terrain, horses will be no faster than the Muskox. I thought we were in a rush Master Rennyn, my recommendation was with the intent of getting to Iqaliat quickly.

~Elf Champion (Paladin) 8~ Perc +11 (+2 to init) AC 28 HP 110 Fort +14 Ref +12 Will +13 PATHBUILDER Link

Koya talks like she has the DM feeding her information directly from the AP.

How do you know there is not another puppet master? Or that her clan is dismantled? Ineffective? Just one of her remaining agents attacked this house and killed numerous defenders, and was only defeated by the combined efforts of most of you. Why did she come alone? Perhaps it was her preference. Perhaps it was over-confidence. There is no evidence with regards to Wodes at all. How does she even know who Wodes is? How do you know who, or even how, it reports to? Distance is hardly a barrier to those with access to the right magic.

What do we gain by "pausing" here? We would be better off heading back to Sandpoint if we are to just sit around and wait for our enemies to assemble.

To Ulf

What bothers me most Master Ulf, is that prior to right now, no one has bothered to mention that an expedition over the Crown could not be undertaken for at least 8 months. Rennyn pointedly looks at Fynn before continuing to address Ulf. In fact, we were explicitly told that you were the one guide, with the skills, who could make the trip immediately.

Oxen, horses, wagons. I cannot speak to such matters directly. That is your area of expertise. We are not in a rush, but we are not at leisure to just sit around for 8 months either. I am not saying that the expedition will be without dangers, far from it, but if this Iqaliat is a permanently inhabited enclave, then surely the means to survive in the environment you describe exists no?

221 Johnas Street

Danger befalls the party a fortnight after liberating Ravenscraeg. The morning frost which hit Kalsgard turned the cobblestone roads treacherous enough to make walking anywhere difficult until midmorning. Amid this, Ulf, Sandru and Alison work vigorously to arrange deliveries of supplies as well as accumulating the small fleet of specialized heavy wagons suitable for the journey. Having fulfilled her campaign role, in the two weeks following Kenan's tragic passing, Koya takes up her knitting - the mittens she's started for the group are coming along nicely.

The aftermath of the fortress's liberation sees a major overhaul of the Rimerunners Guild. Linnorm King Sveinn Blood-Eagle suspends the Rimerunners Guild’s operations (a move which does not affect the group's planned excursion) and seizes all of its assets while investigations are conducted. The King immediately and publicly then distanced himself from his formerly cordial relations with Thorborg Silverskorr. As the scandal of his 'alleged' association roils, the King issues the group with a formal letter of commendation praising them for their role in setting the Guild on a better path for the future of Kalsgard. Short of becoming public heroes in Kalsgard, the group finds it easy to get any seat in the various dining and drinking halls. Waves and smiles of appreciation from citizenry precede smooth negotiations with merchants from any quarter. The King also confirms Jeryn's right to claim the fortress as his own and the wizard's plans to use Ravenscraeg as a place of learning. However, Sveinn Blood-Eagle warns not to advertise it as school of witchcraft and wizardry as much of the general population still view magic as evil despite its use throughout.

Thanks to Alison's quick actions, supplies from Ravenscraeg are quickly removed for storage in Fynn's warehouse ensuring all of the fortress' stores of items are available for the journey. Not surprisingly, some of Fynn's more sizable assets also avoid being seized by the Linnorm King. Fynn quietly rewards Alison for her efforts, naming her heir designate of his operations and small mercantile empire. Should Ameiko's quest to restore her family name be successful, strong trading alliances between Minkai and Kalsgard are guaranteed to prevail well into the future.

For Lute Haggersly's role as a key witness to the liberation of Ravenscraeg, and for collaborating evidence of the Guild's involvement with this Frozen Shadow organization, the merchant is elected as the new head of the Rimerunners Guild. Lute generously rewards the party with 1500gp for his rescue as well as gifting each member with a gold arm-ring set with five freshwater pearls worth 250 gp. By simply wearing the arm-rings, a member of the group can receive a lifetime discount of 10% in many of Kalsgard's shops. (Not really. The small print is there is only a 25% chance the merchant you are dealing with is affiliated with Lute's influence and the discount does not apply to bulk purchases. To receive the personal item at a discount, please roll the percentage for each purchase made.)

A period of quiet settles over Kalsgard and the party allowing the old cleric the enjoyment of periodically reviving her conversation with Rennyn. Other than her cards, it is the old cleric's only enjoyment apart from Fynn. The progression of Koya's small knitting project also marks the progress of the caravan's formation. Eventually all twelve pairs of mittens are ready and like a child showing off his newest birthday toy Sandru exhibits a side not often seen. Excitedly Sandru introduces the group to one of their new wagons just delivered to Fynn's warehouse. Equipped with large wide wheels, a sturdy set of axles and an almost completely enclosed driver's bench, the wagons for this next leg of the trip are compact yet surprisingly roomy inside. The interiors come with plenty of storage bins and folding planks doubling as benches or beds allowing enough space to sleep three (as comfortably as a three man tent - or one Draeven and Spivey). Thick paneling provides both insulation and protection from the elements.

The feature which Sandru finds especially useful is the unique awnings attached to each wagon. When the wagons are properly positioned in a circle, the awnings can be unfurled to attach to a central pole. Each awning overlaps to form a temporary canopy shelter large enough to house the animals. Only minor adjustments need to be made to isolate the interior of the canvass shelter from the elements. A total of six wagons will make up the caravan and although this first wagon is practically new, the others to arrive in the following few days need a little more TLC. As Fenra, Koya and Sandru see to these 'repairs', the rest of the group familiarize themselves with the new rigs. Many of the supplies from Ravenscraeg are transferred from Fynn's warehouse to the wagons as other supplies, arranged through his many contacts, arrive.

At last, the caravan is finally ready to roll - three days ahead of schedule. Ulf is anxious to put as much distance as he can before Rova rolls in leaving little time to track down any special items the group may want.
(Magical purchases may need to be rolled to check that Kalsgard actually has them. Please list the items you would like in the discussion thread and we'll move from there.)

The Road to Iqaliat

After a tearful farewell between Koya and Fynn, Sandru and Alison, the group hits the road. The first leg sees the caravan trekking north towards the Rimethirst Mountains. Three hundred miles from Kalsgard, the range is severe and forms a kind of natural barrier separating Linnorm and the Crown of the World. As the caravan nears the Rimethirst the land begins to transform and daylight hours shrink. Ulf warns matter-of-factly that soon there will be no daylight, as the coming of Kothuna will see a perpetual darkness descend upon the Crown. On the brightside, the sky will be illuminated by the mysterious Auroras which can be bright enough to light the way. Meanwhile, large rocks litter the trail popped loose by the freeze thaw of the climate making the ride a bumpy one. In places, the trail is more like packed shale and loose gravel spotted by flattened boulders between a foot to ten feet in diameter. Steep hills challenge the caravan drivers as teams struggle to crest one hill only to fight for control over loose shale on the decent on the other side.

In the second week, the caravan is harassed by a bulette. The attack is short lived, quickly dispatched by the group. Yet it inflicts enough damage to delay the caravan's progress by a day while the unfortunate pack animal in the creature's path can be healed.

The following week sees the trail illuminated by Auroras of green, yellow and red waving overhead like guiding lights. Ulf is not fooled by the phenomenon pointing out it is too early in the season to see the Auroras, these are merely will'o whisps. There are stories of these floating orbs attempts to trick groups off the trail however Ulf easily avoids the deception.

As the caravan winds its way through the Rimethirst, the trail climbs and descends, crosses log bridges over fast moving glacial waters and around castle sized boulders. Coniferous trees frame the trail filling the air with the smell of fresh pine and moss. Within the tree line the ground softens to a spongy loam littered with pine needles, harebells and windflowers amid Sitka alder, big huckleberry, and Cascade mountain ash. The caravan makes camp in meadows where it can, dried riverbeds (which Ulf guarantees won't flood for another six months) where it can't. All the while, the Auroras continue to linger in the distance.

(I will pause here to let the group post purchases and lodge complaints against the facilities lack of working amenities/common sense)

Reflections

Spivey stretches from her nap in the back of the wagon before fluttering up to take a seat at the front with Draeven. Her frame is small enough to not bother with the bench but perches on the side of the compartment's wooden shelter to get a view of the passing land. With six wagons in the caravan, each member has stepped up to do their part. Keeping the caravan rolling has its challenges and to that Uksahkka has proven to be indispensable. The Varki woman knows her way around the wagons better than Sandru ever did and her advice has yet to let the party down.
(As we have not been playing the caravan rules I am waving the need to hire drivers or assign caravan roles. Everyone takes a turn driving, cooking, mending and emptying the buckets.)
The tiny blonde eyes Draeven's huge weapon, I still think you should have gotten it engraved. Everyone knows a good weapon needs a name and that dwarf said it wouldn't have costed much more. Content to talk to herself, as long as someone is listening, Spivey doesn't wait for Draeven to comment. Rennyn's sword has a name. Oscar would have been nice, or Edge. Oh! Jennette! I like that! It has a bit of a ring to it and don't let anyone tell you there's anything wrong with giving a sword a feminine name. Desna's a woman and you'd never think of her as being weak. Or Iomedae! Spivey crosses her arms and nods, Seriously, Jennette! She'll be the best and will cut through anything! Spivey makes a slashing motion with her hand then smiles to herself as she unscrews the cap of a tiny hipflask and takes a sip. Have I told you that armor looks great! In fact, the tiny blonde might have mentioned this a dozen times since Draeven collected it from the Stone Quarter. It's tailored, right? Much better than that other stuff you were wearing. You know I can't even remember what the other set looked like? No matter. Did you go to the same armorer as Rennyn? His looks likes new too, except I'm pretty sure its the same set he was wearing since, like, forever. Spivey leans closer to whisper, a faint smell of brandy mingling with the exotic scent of her native plane of Elysium, Don't tell him I said so, but that huge buckle on his new belt seems, she makes a face like she's not sure what to say, You know. Big. Spivey giggles as her cheeks blush before smiling whimsically in Draeven's direction. Looking ahead, Draeven realizes its almost time to circle the wagons again and set up camp. Had he really been driving this team for eight hours? Feels like only one. Traveler's Friend

The half-orc seems to be genuinely enjoying the trip.

A name is a fine idea. I think the best names have real meaning behind them. Edge is not bad, he says as he glances over at the newly re-forged sword. The familiar black blade now had a Damascus pattern along its length with two folds being of bright copper. The edge had been honed to an absolute razor's edge. The guard and pommel were now also copper and the handle was made of polished wood in a riot of red, orange and black. Maybe I will accomplish something memorable with it and it will name itself.

Think this but in a great sword LINK

Draeven let out a smile as Spivey kept chatting. His new breastplate had been forged to match his sword. Black Damascus with copper inlays and scrolling.

Yes, the same armorer and Koya made us both belts, but yes his buckle is larger, he replies as he lets out a bigger grin.

Pulling back on the reigns, Draeven begins to turn his wagon into position...

Koya's efforts in Kalsgard...

Koya hums an old sczarni tune in praise of the Moon Mother as her needle weaves golden thread across a section of fabric. She'd been toiling over this piece for close to a week and the headband was nearly done. For hours a day, the old cleric's fingers nimbly worked the fabric, loosening portions of the original weave to make room for another layer of enchantment. Each thread added had been individually blessed then colored by hand using Kalsgard's finest dyes. Throughout, Koya had only jabbed her finger once, very nearly breaking the skin. But the old bird's fingers are calloused; toughened by years of mending clothes. Even had the needle broken skin, given her poor circulation there'd probably be no blood.

As the tune ends, Koya's needle emerges for the last time, the final thread embedded just where she'd needed it to be. Closing tired eyes, Koya presses her thumbs together and curls her fingers into wings for the final prayer. Soon divine energies flow from the cleric's hands to spill over the fabric sealing the spell into the weave.
Koya takes a deep breath then exhales through pursed lips. Her eyes glaze momentarily to examine the work through the goddess' sight and to her relief, she sees it is as it should be.
Fenra dear, its ready now. Come! try it on, let us see how you look.
The fair oracle glides into the private study at Fynn's apartments. Scantly clad, the suggestive clothes draw a cluck of disapproval from the old woman, Honestly girl, why do I spend my days toiling over enchantments if you're just going to go out dressed like that? There's nothing left to the imagination! Koya watches as Fenra fastens the newly crafted headband upon her head, Kind of defeats the purpose of the enchantment, don't you think?

The cat's hide, she was told, was tanned using carefully sifted chromium salts and the boiled bark of imported acacia. Of course this was no domestic feline's skin, but that of a true king of the beasts. This particular lion was slaughtered ritualistically in Taldor no less. Koya thought this was all BS, except for maybe the tanning. The resulting sheet of leather was almost too good to cut. The old woman knew what really matter was she had enough of the fine leather for two belts.

The work was laborious. Even the finest leather was far more difficult to work than the soft fabric of Fenra's headband and Koya swore she could feel the arthritis in her hands rising up in protest before she had even finished laying out the patterns on the sheet. Although Rennyn's measurements were easier to work with, his belt promised to be the more complex.

In theory, most of the enchantment's strength would be imbued into the parts of the buckle then distributed around the wearer's body via the belt. The trick was to not skive the leather too deeply otherwise the resulting stamped patterns would be ruined. An incorrect bevel posed a similar danger via improper balance. Course she could also punch in the wrong place making a belt which was too tight. The vegetarian would probably not notice, but Draeven is more of the meat and potatoes kind - dropping a pound or two would be a hard sell.

Koya examined the large Zirconium buckle of Rennyn's belt. Images of a bull and cat at play dominated the buckle's interior while the carefully cut and set Hawk's Eye gems framed the action. It took some time. The buckle was rather cumbersome, like a miniature oval shield, especially compared to the etched giant face of Draeven's silver and turquoise hasp. Once she'd gotten the placement right, she hoped, the old cleric mauled the leather in one swift blow setting the impression for the final attachment. All that remained was to instill the pieces with the powers the Song of Spheres conducted through Koya. To aid in the transfer, Koya sang the final hymn to the best of her ability - so what if it was a little off key.

Koya has no more time to craft items in Kalsgard before the caravan leaves. Moving forward she is forced to work in the back of a wagon. I await the twins.

The Challenge...

Koya rubs her arms as a cold shiver crosses her shoulders. The cool sensation plaguing her bones is not due to the crisp temperatures of the Rimethirst. The old cleric clucks her tongue, Dreadful!, and tries to distract herself from the still fresh memory of only a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, seeing Anara in those sable robes is the problem.

Koya had thought completing the amulet for Sharadei had been challenging. She'd spent a lot of time just trying to work out the correct pattern necessary to hold the planned enchantment. Of course, pattern was the wrong line of thinking; bark is far too chaotic a material to create any kind of pattern. Eventually, Koya came upon the correct texture for the amulet's complex ligature. The best part was she could feel it was right and that is usually a good sign! When it came time to cast the enchantment, Ulf's introduction to the ranger was key. The amulet would have remained nothing more than an artfully wrought trinket had Idobin not agreed to come to cast the spell with her. And wasn't Sharadei lucky Fenra had been there to help negotiate the man's fees! Koya frowns, I'm all for a little fun now and then, but that girl takes too many risks! No matter. The amulet had turned out as it should and Sharadei seems pleased with it. Difficult girl to understand though. I wish she'd talk more!

But those dreadful robes! From her seat on the wagon, Koya could see the hem of Anara's new garment fluttering beneath the furred cloak in the mountain air. Another shiver crept up and Koya shook her head and shoulder to speed it along. Helping that sorceress craft that costume was a dark business Koya would sooner try to forget.

The tailored gown was beautiful before they started to work on it. The aubergine material was so dark, it was practically black and it fit Anara perfectly. Koya couldn't understand the need to enchant it all! Especially with such, bewitchment! It wasn't until Anara explained the steps that the nature of the project became clear. The girl's dream had been explicit, outlining the steps they'd need to take. But it didn't make Koya feel any better about it. Fenra's encounters with the memories of the dead or that Harrowing session when Koya had been touched with a message from the beyond, had done little to prepare her for what she had seen working with Anara.

The moment Anara drew the blade across her own vein and let her life's blood spill into the urn, Koya's heart stopped. The chanting did little to soothe the old cleric's nerves and when Anara's ancestral shade answered the subsequent spell, Koya thought she was going to scream. Fortunately, she kept it in. Focusing the goddess's gift, rather than attempt to communicate with the essence, Koya drew it up from the urn and guided it to the golden stitching the two had painstakingly woven into the garment. The two women watched as the vapor trailed its way along each strand, splitting here, crossing or reconnecting there like a snake winding its way through a tree. The caporal mist carried on for several minutes, then stopped without warning. Just as Koya wondered if the enchantment was complete, Anara cut her veins again! Sweet Desna help me! How many times had they needed to repeat that part of the ceremony?! Once too many in Koya's opinion.

Eventually, Anara put the knife away and Koya slumped in her chair, exhausted. With bandaged arms, Anara peeled off her clothes and stepped into the newly crafted vestment. Then Koya watched in stunned horror as the golden threads she's spent nearly ten days weaving into the fabric, unwove itself revealing slits and openings in places Koya knew there weren't - and probably shouldn't have been. All that work! The golden thread snaked itself back around Anara's frame creating a new pattern of thorns and.... pincers!? Those were not thorns. Those were stingers!

Shuddering inside Koya pulls the furred cloak tighter about her shoulders and shakes her head. The lengths girls these days go to just to make an impression!

That should take care of the key items! Koya continued her work while on the road and by this point everything is complete. I will try to get another post up tomorrow which should start to move the AP along once more!

The caravan lumbers along the pass. Crisp mountain air gusts from the north and when the wagons follow the trail east, the group finds relief from the biting winds within a small gorge. Stone cliffs topped by coniferous trees rise between 20 to 40 feet on either side while a cluster of boulders about 30 feet high marks the center of the gorge like a decorative centerpiece. Spivey flutters excitedly ahead sporting her fur lined armor for the first time. The skimpy outfit, tactfully placed sheets of leafy lamellar, hugs her delicate torso like a second skin before flaring out in a cute tiered skirt. The lyrakien disappears around the cluster of boulders, glitter marking her trail for the group. Seconds later, a shrill cry can be heard. The source of the tiny blonde's shriek comes into view some 120 feet away as Spivey returns to the safety of the group. Two trolls, each standing nearly a dozen feet tall, are plodding along the trail westward. Each wears hide armor beneath cloaks which look better than they should. The glinting of metal issuing from long claws...

As Rennyn and Draeven draw their weapons, but before they advance, Anara steps forward, (MA to -A,-62)balls up her fists at her sides and tenses for just a moment. As she relaxes and opens her hands a dull sheen is noticed on the newly drawn blades as they no longer reflect the surrounding light as sharply as a moment ago.

Under a closer inspection, the blades would show slight red and green tinges to the dulling effect. (Red representing STR damage and green referring to CON damage) Both the arrowhead of the next arrow Shar fires and the flanges of Fenras mace would show these same indications.

Looking at the two battle ready veterans in the lead, Anara calls First blood you draw delivers a little surprise!

Next attack adds poison. DC20 FORT save. If successful, deals 1d3 damage to both CON and STR, 1/round for 6 rounds. Cure 1 save.

Anara joins Rennyn and Draeven to await the trolls (Am assuming they positions are exactly where they need to be). After the twin casts her spell, Rennyn's katana bursts into flame! Seeing drawn steel and not wanting to get in the way, Spivey flutters past the group to take up a position near the lead wagon. As the tiny blonde zips past, she touches the holy symbol of a Butterfly around her neck. Intoning the words from the Song of Spheres' litany of encouragement, a flash of sunlight passes over the group filling their hearts with courage (Casts Bless), You guys got this! I'll just be hovering over here. You know, where its safe, alright? Great! Ok, call me when you're done!
On the other side of the gorge, the two trolls roll shoulders and smirk like a couple toughs about to ask for 'donations'. Drawing nearer, it is possible to see a hand painted symbol upon their armor resembling three pointed towers, the center painted taller than the two flanking. Although crude, the bulges of the towers suggest three segments each. To Fenra, the painted symbols look more like three fingers, the longer one suggestive of a crude gesture. At the sight of Rennyn's burning katana, the two trolls mutter harsh words to one another.

Rennyn:

As Anara finishes her incantation Suishen vibrates once violently, Eeww, yuck! then bursts into flame. The sudden spurt of independence from the sword surprises you. The Tian thought it sent to you is clear in your mind, the sword does not like or approve of poison upon itself. Apart from the message no noticeable change occurs to the sword and it feels completely normal, other than the flames licking its blade.
