That would be nice to know.. Surely a 21 and 23 are within 5 of its AC.. I also forgot to add in Dora's +2 hit/dam from inspire so i hit AC 26 and would be 43 damage if Faldoc destroyed 2 images and my 3 actually hit it..

Given his inability to do what he had in mind, Giovanni goes into Total Defense as he tries to walk past the T-Rex in order to close with the Vrock . . ..
Puts his AC up to 35, not that such a number should be a challenge to the T-Rex, I know . . ..

I know it has animal int, but your not technically an enemy yet.. It might decide to focus on its already known enemy..

![]() |

I forgot the +2 to hit actually. I thought I had it in there but I realized I only adjusted for taking off Deadly Aim. If its not to late can we adjust those to-hit rolls, EF? If so, I might actually have popped 4 images since its 4 arrows in the attack. As you likely know I do have silver blanched cold iron arrows (seeing that you were the one that tipped me off to them) though it may not matter here.

![]() |

I believe he retconned you destroying 2 images.. Your manyshot does fire 2 arrows, but they both hit the same target so it would only destroy 1 image.. Although that 16 becomes an 18 and that might be with 5 of the targets AC and pop a third image..

And Giovanni's done. <g> Down to 2 HP in one round. When I said "with my luck" you were NOT supposed to make it happen! There was "only" a 30% of him hitting me. Oh, uh . . .. Chjara's Liberating Movement would give Giovanni a check at +21. That means my die roll has to be 11 points higher than EF's. Not impossible, but not likely. Still a better chance than he has otherwise!
For Escape Artist: 1d20 ⇒ 2
And that means my total is 10 less than the T-Rex's Grapple bonus, so . . ..
And for the record, I completely agree with how EF played this. It is what I would have done, though I don't know if the dice would have rolled as well for me. <g>
And, yeah, the T-Rex has reach. Giovanni was never adjacent to the beast. Well, not until it grabbed him.

![]() |

Dora could have tried timely inspiration as well, but sadly cannot help that 2 enough. Do you have a reroll?
Also, I thought Giovanni would have about 17hp left (94-43-34) still not great, but better than 2, and possibly
able to survive 1 extra round to heal or cut himself out with a light slashing weapon.

![]() |

Im confused why he takes the damage as soon as he is grabbed? The ability states if it begins its turn with a grappled opponent in its mouth it can attempt a pin.. If it succeeds it swallows and does bite damage.. Imo the second bite damage wouldn't be till next round.. There's also the chance that it rolls a 1 on the pin.. That would let Gio out for no extra damage..
Swallow Whole (Ex) If a creature with this special attack begins its turn with an opponent grappled in its mouth (see Grab), it can attempt a new combat maneuver check (as though attempting to pin the opponent). If it succeeds, it swallows its prey, and the opponent takes bite damage. Unless otherwise noted, the opponent can be up to one size category smaller than the swallowing creature. Being swallowed causes a creature to take damage each round. The amount and type of damage varies and is given in the creature's statistics. A swallowed creature keeps the grappled condition, while the creature that did the swallowing does not. A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon (the amount of cutting damage required to get free is equal to 1/10 the creature's total hit points), or it can just try to escape the grapple. The Armor Class of the interior of a creature that swallows whole is normally 10 + 1/2 its natural armor bonus, with no modifiers for size or Dexterity. If a swallowed creature cuts its way out, the swallowing creature cannot use swallow whole again until the damage is healed. If the swallowed creature escapes the grapple, success puts it back in the attacker's mouth, where it may be bitten or swallowed again.
Bolded a few key lines.. Also Gio dont you have an ability to gain 20 temp hps?

![]() |

@Grim, I thought the same, but EF has it right. The grab happened as part of the AoO and the t-rex *did* begin its turn with Giovanni in its mouth. The pin/roll was a 17 and not a 1, unfortunately. The temp 20hp might buy enough time to drop the beast (as Chjara is suggesting).
[edit: Ninja'd]

Yep. That's exactly what happened. That's the nasty thing about creatures with swallow whole and significant reach; they can grab you on the AoO and then finish swallowing on their turn. I *accidentally* killed my fiance's wolf companion with a remorhaz using the same unfortunate tactic.

Ragnar - Dora's haste spell has not yet been cast. Do you have base 20' move (40' double move?) I would not think you could even reach the dinosaur in one turn from starting next to Grimnir. If that is true, you are slightly ahead of Boomer but not yet far enough to provoke AoO from the T-rex.

"Lady Chjara, I just do not know what we will do with these men!"
Once into position, Dora casts Haste on the party members she can reach (Dora, Rusty, Faldoc, Grimnir, Chjara).
extra +1 to hit, saves, AC, and extra attack for those affected
"Chjara, not sure if your plan will be as effective now, but if you move anyone, put them into flank with the lizard and I will add tactical precision to the mix."

I think Ragnar actually said he moved closer during the first round but his token was not moved so I moved it for him. With that he was able to double-move next to the dino on his last turn.

Dora continues to inspire while hasting (most of) the party.
Chjara grabs ahold of Grimnir and transports him next to the dinosaur.
Now next to the dinosaur, Grimnir hacks into it three times in quick succession, taking it down!
From inside the dino Giovanni activates his tattoo, wishing he had brought along a dagger.
Now the question is whether you still take swallow whole damage even though the dino is dead. The ability doesn't specify. Since you're still inside, I would rule yes since the damage is representing you being digested (at least that's how I think of it-suffocation may play into it too). You will have to cut your way out next round (or someone else can do it from the outside I suppose). If someone else can find a rule that says otherwise, please correct me.
