Sorry for the uncharacteristically slow posting this week. Very busy with school work but posting should be back to normal now.

Yes, Yanos was able to escape last round.

Yanos stabs at the cube and it explodes, covering the party in slime!

Out of combat!

Pause for healing? We'll move on down the sewers this afternoon/tonight.

As the gelatinous cube explodes in a burst of...whatever substance gelatinous cubes are made of, Maaarv slides his smoked goggles onto his forehead, gives a quick flick of his wrist and a small wooden stick appears in his hand. He taps himself lightly over his wounds.

His wounds seem to close right up without any problem. The alchemist then turns to Ackuda.

"Sorry about getting you with that bomb. Let me heal you - it's the least I can do."

Cure Light Wounds for Ackuda: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Maaarv offers the use of his wand to the rest of the party, except for the dhampir.

If anyone needs a hit or two from the wand, feel free to roll it yourself and let me know so's I can deduct it.

Once finished helping get folks back to tip-top shape, the alchemist looks around. "An interesting creature, this cube...I wonder if anything useful could be gained from further study." He looks around the remains for anything interesting.

GELATINOUS. . . ALMOST-CUBE!

The party finds nothing of interest in the sewers except the trail of their beast quarry.

The mouth-filling stench of the sewers finally breaks in the relatively fresh air of Ardis’s docks. The moonlight shining down upon the weathered stones beneath the sewer gate catches a glint of gold: a small, worn locket smashed upon the rocks holds a pair of tiny portraits. One shows a Vonran Vilk that may have walked the streets fifty years ago. The other, torn and gnawed, shows Markov Rutowski—Vilk’s lost lover.

A howl pierces the night sky. Several blocks away, a hunched figure pauses to watch its pursuers emerge from the sewer, then takes off running in the direction of Rutowski’s townhouse.

It's a CHASE!

chase rules, in case you are unfamiliar:

It takes a move action to move through a single card. When a Character exits from a card, he must choose one of that card’s two obstacles to face as a standard action before moving to the next card. Instead of exiting a card, a character can choose to take another action not directly related to navigating the chase’s course, such as casting a spell or drawing a weapon.

A character may attempt to move three cards during his turn by taking a full-round action. That character must overcome both obstacles on the card he is leaving. In this case, if a character fails either obstacle check by 5 or less, he only moves one card forward and his turn ends. If a character fails either obstacle check by more than 5, he cannot move at all that turn. A character unfortunate enough to fail two obstacle checks in a turn becomes mired in his current square. A mired character must spend another full-round action becoming unmired, effectively losing his next turn.

A character can also choose to make a ranged attack or cast a spell during his turn in a chase. If the action is a full-round action, he can’t move at all. Use the number of cards and their established distances (in this case, 30 feet) to determine ranges as necessary. The terrain where the chase takes place might provide the target partial or even full cover or concealment. A character can only choose to make melee attacks against targets that are on the same card.

Summary: Unless you are making a ranged attack or casting a spell, you can basically make two checks per round. If you make the check, you move to the next card and can try one of those checks now. If you fail, you stay there but can try again. Alternatively you can try to do both of the skill checks for the card you are currently on and then jump ahead three cards in one round.

Oh wait, I get two checks? I got things mixed up from the last chase I was in. For some reason I thought that making a check was a standard action, and then the progress from the current card to the next card was a move action. The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

@Maaarv: actually, I think I typed it wrong above (and maybe wasn't understanding it completely correctly either). I've run several chases but after rereading the rules I think your original assumption was correct and that I picked up the 'doing two checks' thing from someone else. Making a check is a standard action and moving across the 30' of ground that the card represents is a move action. Alternatively you can try both checks as a full round to jump ahead three squares-with the caveats above that you might get stuck somewhere.

Also, yes, even though Maaarv opened the door everyone still has to make the check. It's not realistic but that's just the way chase mechanics work.

Maaarv bursts through the door, but just barely. Yanos becomes large and bursts through. . . another door? Danyn is unable to kick through his door. Ackuda easily pushes through his door.

The Mauler easily jumps across the crumbling bridge. Can't fail the check.

So, I had a weird idea, and not sure how or if it will work, but I thought it would be interesting. I planned on trying to Grapple the Midnight Mauler, and if successful, to drag him backwards on the Chase chart (half speed via Moving a Grapple) to the rest of the party. I obviously expect to get a bit hurt, but I it might be a rally cool thing if it works.

The Mauler is able to find his way through the sinkhole but finds Yanos and Maaarv waiting for him.

The old wolf hunches down on the cobblestones, panting from the chase and glaring with fiery red eyes. “So, you’re the lap dogs the Decemvirate sent to cull me? Pathetic. All of your cut throats will barely slake my thirst from our little run.” Low, feral growling can be heard coming from the shadows of a nearby alley.

The Mauler grins, bearing ragged, yellow fangs. “How shall we do this, little ones?”

Maaarv holds his hands up in an effort to calm the lycanthrope. "Listen Vilk, we are here to help you. Markov is worried about you. Come with us - let us get you the help you need."

Sorry Danyn. You still wouldn't have caught up to him but I'll move you up a bit on the map. Although now that you're talking to him you'll all probably have time to move a bit.

Anyone else saying anything before I update?

Ackuda tries to catch up, and when he sees the Mauler, and then hears the Wolfhound behind him, he clutches his quarterstaff and draws a scroll from a scrollcase on his belt.

"Don't throw your life away." he says. "You aren't completely to blame for this, and the Pathfinders may be able to cure you!"

No more chase rolls needed now that he's stopped; just talky time for now unless combat breaks out.

Vilk has a hungry look in his eyes. "Oh, and how do you expect to cure me?"

If Vasilios did catch up he will cast hideous laughter on the mutant.

Why do dogs bury bones in the ground? Because you can't bury them in trees...
Voices a rim shot... (Ba-dum-dum-ta!)
Will DC 14

Hideous Laughter:

Hideous Laughter
School enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting]; Level bard 1, sorcerer/wizard 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (tiny fruit tarts and a feather)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one creature; see text
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
This spell afflicts the subject with uncontrollable laughter. It collapses into gales of manic laughter, falling prone. The subject can take no actions while laughing, but is not considered helpless. After the spell ends, it can act normally. On the creature's next turn, it may attempt a new saving throw to end the effect. This is a full round action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. If this save is successful, the effect ends. If not, the creature continues laughing for the entire duration.

A creature with an Intelligence score of 2 or lower is not affected. A creature whose type is different from the caster's receives a +4 bonus on its saving throw, because humor doesn't “translate” well.
