"This is all strange. I'll do what I can to help, of course."
"Although I'm better at fighting than using magic."
"Maybe we should try finding that false crypt before someone else does?"

Lazar is about to say something, but Mishtes seems to be faster. He can see, however, the wisdom in his words, and nods. "I agree on that, finding whatever's on the crypt should be our first move. Then we should establish our contacts here - with Father Grimbarrow, the owner of the shop, et cetera. That would give us a certain base from where to start." He touches involuntarily his medallion. "Maybe I can talk the Father to our cause, or help whoever is good at talking."

Same-religion friendly DC discount, pleeeeeeashhh...?

Well... I was going to go speak to Father Grimbarrow now as well about accessing the church's records, and about this hidden cache.

he pauses to look at the others.

So, then is our first course of action to go to the church?

Gadren nods. "Lets discretely drop that other book off, it shouldn't take long and we've got enough to keep track of. It's not a bad idea, I suppose the question is how do we balance researching these events and action. Too little research and we might not be able to effectively counter them. Too much and we may strike far too late."

"I'd like to stop briefly at the Unfurling Scroll, if they have the spell I am seeking it might prove invaluable if things go badly."

Mishtes follows the others. Leaving his donkey, Daisy, at the Lorrimor house.

"Is there anything here anybody does for fun?",
Mishtes asks nobody in particular after Cedric and Maria exchange pleasantries,
"If not, I can make and mend weapons. Nothing too fancy, mind."

Are you sure you want to do that?

You note the many unfriendly glances you receive as you walk through the village. The Unfurling scroll (L on the map) is to the north of the village, through the communities town square.

The unfurling scroll.
When their parents can afford to spare them from the farms, a few “lucky” children are sent to study under Alendru Ghoroven, a retired wizard-turned-teacher. Alendru teaches reading, history, and math, as well as beginning magical theory. He seeks to elevate “the commoners,” though few of his pupils enjoy the strictness of his classes.

In addition to teaching, Alendru supplements his income by buying and selling minor magic items (primarily scrolls) that he’s purchased or created. He offers many 1st- through 3rd-level scrolls for sale, along with a fair number of low-priced magic items. A wand of cat’s grace (13 charges) and a wand of slow (6 charges) are two of his current highest-priced offerings, but he also recently came into the possession
of a flesh golem manual as well.

As you enter Alendru looks up from a tome he is studying and regards you with an indifferent face. "Can I help You?"

By complete coincidence he does have a scroll of Keep Watch for save when you ask. 30gp is the cost.

Male Human Bloodrager (inactive)

"One of us needs a scroll." Mishtes then looks expectantly at the spell-casters to speak up...

Gadren's eye twitches at thirty gold pieces! Highway robbery... but holds his tongue and starts getting the money ready. This might be the only reliable source of new arcane lore and they might need to research here so he swallowed any annoyance and handed it over with a smile. "Thank you, I'm glad you had that one in stock." ...that was true enough at least. "Are there any scrolls you are keeping your eye out for or that sell regularly enough you need a good supply of might I ask?"

-----------------------------------------------------------

Once they were out of the store and well out of earshot. "Thirty gold, the out of towner tax man must have called round just before I got there. I'm not going to alienate him over something so small but that's a bit steep whatever way you try to mount it. At least he had the spell."

Phaedra would make sure to have her symbol of Pharasma visible to show that she is one of her faithful.

Once at the Temple, she would greet the priest in charge. "Good day to you Father. We were wondering if perhaps you would grant any of us access to you records on certain local topics. It's a bit complicated, but we are trying to carry out the last wishes of a dear friend."

Gadren has spent less time than the average wizard before books or in a library but still far more than most people. He's had to learn to use his time efficiently and thoroughly takes advantage of the opportunity.

Are you sure you want to do that?

Sorry, slight change. It's five DC25 knowledge Local or History checks on on the five prisoners. One for each.

The Whispering way:

DC 10: The Whispering Way is a sinister organization of necromancers that has been active in the Inner Sea region for thousands of years.
DC 15: Agents of the Whispering Way often seek alliances with undead creatures, or are themselves undead. The Whispering Way’s most notorious member was Tar-Baphon, the Whispering Tyrant, although the
society itself has existed much longer than even that mighty necromancer.
DC 20: The Whispering Way itself is a series of philosophies that can only be transferred via whispers—the philosophies are never written or spoken of loudly, making the exact goals and nature of the secretive philosophy difficult for outsiders to learn much about.
DC 25: Exact details on the society are difficult to discern, but chief among the Whispering Way’s goals are discovering formulae for creating liches and engineering the release of the Whispering Tyrant. Agents often travel to remote sites or areas plagued by notorious haunts
or undead menaces to perform field research or even to capture unique monsters. Their symbol is a gagged skull, and those who learn too many of the Way’s secrets are often murdered, and their mouths mutilated to prevent their bodies from divulging secrets via speak with dead.

Harrowstone:

DC 10: Harrowstone is a ruined prison—partially destroyed by a fire in 4661, the building has stood vacant ever since. The locals suspect that it’s haunted, and don’t enjoy speaking of the place.
DC 15: Harrowstone was built in 4594. Ravengro was founded at the same time as a place where guards and their families could live and that would produce food and other supplies used by the prison. The fire that killed all of the prisoners and most of the guards destroyed a large portion of the prison’s underground eastern wing, but left most of the stone structure above relatively intact. The prison’s warden perished in the fire, along with his wife, although no one knows why she was in the prison when the fire occurred. A statue commemorating the
warden and the guards who lost their lives was built in the months after the tragedy—that statue still stands on the riverbank just outside of town.
DC 20: Most of the hardened criminals sent to Harrowstone spent only a few months imprisoned, for it was here that most of Ustalav’s executions during that era were carried out. The fire that caused the tragedy was, in fact, a blessing in disguise, for the prisoners had rioted and gained control of the prison’s dungeons immediately
prior to the conflagration. It was only through the selfsacrifice
of Warden Hawkran and 23 of his guards that the prisoners were prevented from escaping—the guards gave their lives to save the town of Ravengro.

Prisoner 2-Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 8 + 4 = 25
Prisoner 3-Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 4 = 29
Prisoners 4-Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 4 = 17
Prisoners 5-Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 8 + 4 = 26

The Whispering Way
"Now this is worrying. I was right about the connection but had it wrong. I was assuming it was a remnant of the Whispering Tyrants rule, perhaps apprentices." He holds up a finger.

"But it seems that the organization predated him though he was the most notorious member. It has existed for thousands of years. They're made up of necromancers and unsurprisingly ally with various forms of undead with some members actually becoming undead."

"It's a series of philosophies that-" His brow furrows double check his research and shaking his head. "Apparently the philosophies can only be communicated by a whisper, never spoken aloud or written making their exact goals and nature obfuscated to outsiders. I'd postulate this could be a taboo put in place for secrecy but could be mystically enforced."

"Their activities often revolve around discovering formulae for creating liches but more lately they've been noted to be trying to find ways to release the Whispering Tyrant. They often travel to remote places or those cursed with notorious haunts or undead to facilitate field research or in the case of unique monsters capture them."

"Their symbol is a gagged skull. Those who learn too many of the Whispering Way's secrets are often murdered with their mouths mutilated to prevent their bodies from divulging secrets using spells like speak with dead." Gadren shakes his head. "Cheap but unless they have a ritual I'd say that last part might be overcome if you're cunning."

Harrowstone
"On the subject of Harrowstone, there was a nasty fire their as we know and the locals are rather reluctant to speak about it or document much but someone always takes notes. Local knowledge suggests it is haunted. The fire was in 4661AR, it killed all the prisoners and most of the guards, destroying the underground section of the eastern wing but most of the building remained intact. The warden and his wife also died in the fire, but no one has given a good reason for why she was even there." He shakes his head "There is a statue living on the riverbank just outside town commemorating the dead staff built shortly after the fire."

"It was built in 4594AR at the same time as Ravenego, the town serving as a place for the guards and their families to live as well as produce food stuffs, that kind of thing."

"Now the curious thing about Harrowstone is that it was where most of the prisoners awaiting execution were sent. They were rioting and had gained control when the conflagration took hold. According to reports at the time it was only due to the efforts of the Warden and the twenty three guards who died that the prisoners were prevented from escaping." The white haired mage sits back in his chair bushy eyebrows furrowing. "This does not bode well."

Are you sure you want to do that?

Knowledge The Five Prisoners:

DC 15: Originally, Harrowstone housed only local criminals, but as the prison’s fame spread, other counties and distant lands began paying to have more dangerous criminals housed within this prison’s walls.
At the time of the great Harrowstone Fire, the number of particularly violent or dangerous criminals imprisoned within the dungeons below was at an all-time high.
DC 20: The five most notorious prisoners in Harrowstone at the time of the great fire were Father Charlatan, the Lopper, the Mosswater Marauder, the Piper of Illlmarsh, and the Splatter Man.
DC 25: There are actually five separate DC 25 checks to be made—each of the five prisoners represents a different Knowledge check. The information gained depends on the prisoner being researched.

Father Charlatan (Sefick Corvin): Of the five notorious prisoners, only Father Charlatan was not technically a murderer, yet his crimes were so blasphemous that several churches demanded he be
punished to the full extent of Ustalavic law.
Although he claimed to be an ordained priest of any number of faiths, Father Corvin was in fact a traveling con artist who used faith as a mask and a means to bilk the faithful out of money in payment for false miracles or cures.
He became known as Father Charlatan after his scheme was exposed and his Sczarni accomplices murdered a half-dozen city guards in an attempt to make good the group’s escape.

The Lopper (Vance Saetressle): When the Lopper stalked prey, he would hide in the most unlikely of places, sometimes for days upon end with only a few supplies to keep him going while he waited for the exact right moment to strike.
Once his target was alone, the Lopper would emerge to savagely behead his victim with a handaxe.

The Mosswater Marauder (Ispin Onyxcudgel): Only 5 years before his hometown of Mosswater was destined to be overrun and ruined by monsters from the nearby river, Ispin Onyxcudgel was a well-liked artisan and a doting husband.
When he discovered his wife’s infidelity, he flew into a jealous rage and struck her dead with his hammer, shattering her skull and his sanity with one murderous blow.
Wracked with shame and guilt, Ispin became convinced that if he could rebuild his wife’s skull she would come back to life—but unfortunately, he could not find the last blade-shaped fragment from the murder site. So instead, Ispin became the Mosswater Marauder.
Over the course of several weeks, the cunning dwarf stalked and murdered nearly 20 people while searching for just the right skull fragment.
He was captured just before murdering the daughter of a visiting nobleman from Varno, and was carted off to Harrowstone that same night.

The Piper of Illmarsh (real name unknown): Before he snatched his victims, the Piper taunted his targets with a mournful dirge on his flute.
He preferred to paralyze lone victims by dosing their meals with lich dust and then allowed his pet stirges to drink the victims dry of blood.

The Splatter Man (Hean Feramin): Professor Feramin was a celebrated scholar of Anthroponomastics (the study of personal names and their origins) at the Quartrefaux Archives in Caliphas. Yet an accidental association with a succubus twisted and warped his study, turning it into an obsession.
Feramin became obsessed with the power of a name and how he could use
it to terrify and control. Soon enough, his reputation was ruined, he’d lost his tenure, and he’d developed an uncontrollable obsession with an imaginary link between a person’s name and what happens to that name when the person dies.
Every few days, he would secretly arrange for his victim to find a letter from her name written in blood, perhaps smeared on a wall or spelled out with carefully arranged entrails. Once he had spelled his victim’s name, he would at last come for her, killing her in a gory mess
using a complex trap or series of rigged events meant to look like an accident.

The well ordered library of the temple greatly aids your search for information and you soon have a more in-depth knowledge of the history of the The Whispering way, Harrowstone and the five notorious prisoners it held at the time of it's fall.

He became known as Father Charlatan after his scheme was exposed and his Sczarni accomplices murdered a half-dozen city guards in an attempt to make good the group’s escape." He shakes his head before continuing to the next star prisoner.

"Vance Saetressle, also called the Lopper would stalk his target with a habbit of hiding in the most unusual of places sometimes waiting for days with meager supplies to keep him going while he waited for the right moment to spring. Once his prey was alone he would behead them with his handaxe. How dreadful."

"Ispin Onyxcudgel, also known as the Mosswater Marauder was initially a well liked dwarven artisan and dotting husband. This is five years before the town was over run by monsters, I think it was in the River Kingdoms if memory serves. But he discovered his wife was having an affair and killed her with his hammer, killing her and driving himself mad. He started believing that if he could rebuild his wife's skull she would come back to life but could not find the last blade shaped fragment from the murder site.
ly, he could not find the last blade-shaped fragment from the murder site. So instead, Ispin became the Mosswater Marauder. He set about searching for the right skull fragment over the next several weeks, stalking and murdering nearly twenty people. He was caught trying to kill the daughter of a nobleman from Varno and was shipped off to Harrowstone that very night."

"Nobody knew the real name of the piper of Illmarsh. He used to taunt his victims with the mournful dirge of his flute before snatching them. His choice means of attack was to paralyze lone victims by dosing their meals with lich dust and then allowed his pet stirges to drink the victims dry of blood."

"Professor Hean Feramin, also known as 'The Splatter Man' was a renowned scholar of Anthroponomastics, the study of personal names and their origins, at the Quatrefaux Archives in Caliphas. There was some kind of 'accidental association' with a succubus that twisted and warped his studies turning it into an obsession. He became obsessed with the power of a name and how he could use it to terrify and control people. Soon he lost his tenure, his reputation in tatters and he developed an uncontrollable obsession with an imaginary link between a person’s name and what happens to that name when the person dies. He would arrange for his victim to find a letter from their name in blood, perhaps smeared on a wall or spelled carefully with entrails every few days. Once he spelled the persons name he would come for them killing tem in some complex trap or rigged events made to look like an accident in a gorey mess."

Cedric nods. Yes, There is a strong possibility the souls of many rest in that forsaken please. We must proceed with caution when we are near. And, then let us be off to the crypts.

"I wouldn't like to run into any lingering undead or haunts created by these fellows but it seems far too likely."

Are you sure you want to do that?

You return to the restlands as the afternoon slips away and the shadows lengthen on the ground.

Secret stuff:

Observed?: 1d100 ⇒ 22

You are alone as you make your way through the silent gravestones to the crypt Lorrimor marked as the site of the hidden cache.

The False Crypt:
The false crypt mentioned in the professor’s journal is located in the northeast corner of the Restlands, near the junction of the paths known as the Eversleep and the Black Path.
The crypt itself is a freestanding granite mausoleum, the roof of which is decorated with a pair of leering gargoyle statues.
A single stone door with a rustylooking lock sits in the mausoleum’s south facade, but an examination of the lock reveals that the lock is broken, its clasp melted by acid and then put back into place so that to casual observation the lock appears intact.

What are you doing now?

New map up top. False Crypt.

Maria grunts at the lock

Did the professor do this or has someone else been here? Seems like Lorrimor's work to use science instead of strength.

Maria looks around for anything suspicious then will enter the crypt, glad to be getting something done, unless someone stops her.

I believe this was the professor, based on his notes.

Cedric Lights a torch and follows behind Maria.

"I don't know. I would sooner believe that Professor Lorrimor gained access to the key than use acid...."
