GM, does it seem like the shop is open? Can one readily see how many people are in the shop?

"Wait, so I'm trying to bluff us into the Skinsaw cult, right?"

Male Bear Burglar 1

Were it run by someone more businesslike, it would probably be a 8-9 establishment. (Un?)fortunately, it is owned by a collection of artists known as the Black Mask Brigade. Members of the Brigade keep strange hours, particularly if one of the masks finds a commission on which they want to toil through the night (and desire to use the shop's tools.) But this is because they are artistes, as a Galtan would say.

I am assuming that you have not left the safehouse your broke into yet (thus just making it a house I guess?) until a plan is decided on (and I'm on a home computer or feeling particularly forward with my phone.)

This is a test of the Perception Check System. Ensure your modifier is right, lest you be shorted upon perception.

Lui pcp: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (18) + 19 = 37
Pan pcp: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

The party decided to leave the "house", satisfied with their search. Before they exit, the incredibly perceptive Cleric of the Trickery detects something. Unfortunately, due to the distance and the walls, nobody else happens to notice the fun waiting outside. Luisila has a choice on how to handle the situation and any assumptions on the part of this GM will likely be incorrect and poorly imitated.

Luisila:
You hear signs of similarly-minded individuals, in that of the act of sneaking around. One has snuck around the outside of the building you're in, while the others are making very quiet sounds on the roofs (and they're definitely bigger than cats.)

The man just around the western corner (3 squares left of Varg) is whispering to himself, "What're these guys called again? Norgobites? Norgotbans? Norgobos? Gotta think up a good tagline for the Chronicle..."

This is one of those special cases where Diplomacy may be made as a Standard Action, especially if you phrase it right.

GM Burglar:

Betcha Signboy didn’t :)

Luisila takes the blanket and the map of the Ascendant Court off the wall as she makes a snap decision.

“There are a number of individuals outside who think we’re Agents of Father Skinsaw. I suspect they’re fellow Pathfinders and good guys. I think we should avoid this fight. Cleaver, there’ll be fighting later – I promise."

"I’m going to cast Mistress’ Illusion Level 8 Trickery domain ability that acts like veil, GM Burglar to make us all appear like ants for a minute and a half. I can't see how they'll detect us at night in that form. Everyone, go out the door and RUN due east for a minute. Then we’ll regroup where we met the carriage, OK?”

Free action speech, followed by standard.

Male Bear Burglar 1

The amusing thing is that they're in the same boat as you guys; Lots of perception, very little stealth. Keeping within the 30-ft beacon that is your cleric for Ant Time does solve this problem largely enough.

dmdice:
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 311d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 211d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

The man around the corner of the building darts around upon hearing the whispering. Luisila is still able to pick out the whispering, but everyone can hear the yelling. "Gozrah's windy bits, cowards're making an run for it! Filthy Norgobros! You're not getting away!" The man is a dark-haired man of a mixture of heritage (primarily Chelish with some Shoanti mixed in) carries only a net in one hand. As for armor, he has both a breastplate and light-steel shield equipped. He smells of fish guts and Luisila can easily identify as the man from the other outbuilding whistling earlier. He stops in the doorway for about 10 seconds, his shield to bash and net ready to be chucked. "Stop right there!" As he attempts to blockade the doorway with his lithe frame, he finds only that a poster has been stolen and the assumed thieves are missing. He makes his way into the room to investigate, abandoning the stalwart position that would actually work here. "They're gone!"

From atop the further outhouse, as the net-wielder enters, another male voice responds. He inquires further from his heightened post, "Like, invisible gone, or teleport gone? Utok, wai-" he climbs down from the roof of the outhouse in a hurry, and attempts to plug the breach of security in the doorway, giving only time for maybe one or two folks to escape. "Close that door! They might just be invisible or something! ... Gah! I'm not gonna hear the end of this one, am I..." He carries a bow, a dagger, and is wearing a chain shirt.

"Don't worry, I know whose voice that is," a female voice responds from the first outhouse's roof. What climbs down is a fairer-skinned Kelish human of whom your cleric can recognize by voice as well. She wears a robe, the top altered to look more like a front-cut dress more commonly found in a ballroom than a battlefield. She bears a holy symbol tattoo just below her neck of a wasp with which many of you are familiar and carries a whip in her hand.  When in the doorway, she *casts* Invisibility Purge, which does nothing but confirm that there's no invisiburglars. "It's one of my Sisters. She's been acting strange recently; refusing summons and getting strange messages from some "super-important admirer" in Katapesh. Headmistress isn't going to be surprised she's turned allegiance to the the Mask, but we should probably report this immediately. There's no one here."

It is during this time (about 6 rounds of Ant Time) that everyone can filter out of the building with no checks needed while keeping the 30-ft to keep the per-round effect going (in a "Luisila lines up with the door, avoiding touching anyone to prevent Interaction checks. With bads (goods?) shuffling around doing a T10 search (which takes a minute), the ones outside can full run for the rest of their Ant round." This does require Luisila to be the last one to leave.)

Utok grumbles that he could track them, but the idea is dismissed until after "reporting" this new information.

Phew! Praise Calistria, it worked!”

Luisila makes a deep curtsey to Panfalcon. “My genuine thanks, Master. Oh, and Thank Threv we avoided that particular member of the Sisterhood.”

“Candélabre OursCâlin-Cambrioleur is her name. But everyone calls her Candy, ‘cos she’d do anyone for a bar of the stuff! Ugh … what a trollop! Luisila shakes her head and turns to Linnea. “Now, Your Grace. Shall we make an bee ant-line for the Black Mask? Are we going to bluff our way through the front door, or try to sneak in through the back?”

The party makes their way to the Black Mask, the front entryway more visible than the backdoor.

Elaborate store windows display masquerade costumes hanging from gilded wire mannequins. A wooden signpost swings in the wind offering a steady rustling of chains; its placard contains no words, but rather illustrates an elegant black mask draped over a dark gray glove. The slightly opened door butts gently against its jam. Beyond the door, a slim shaft of light slants into the otherwise dark shop.

Map is updated. Barrel Cat never joins the party and instead joins the cult of Norgorber.

Assuming you case the joint like good thieves Pathfinders, the little walkways lead to pane windows. They are unilluminated unlit by the pale moonlight, displaying mannequins. The general layout of the store is known from the earlier Local check.

As seen on the map, there is a backdoor, but it's VERY hefty. It is a large, reinforced door bound in thick chains and many locks. It sits fixed in the center of a large brick wall. Destroying this would be quite nosy (like banging on a metal door.)

Linnea, noting the lights being out, sighs softly, "Nobody seems to be home. But, maybe I'll try the door anyway..."

Linnea gives a final look back and gently tries the door knob...

An open door is no match seasoned Pathfinders! Linnea opens the door and nothing explodes, though opening both doors does let the moonlight in.

Popping up like the central figure in the hit board (and sometimes real-life) game Don't Wake Daddy, a Dreng dresses in his usual sleeping clothes complete with sleeping cap pops up from behind the register area. "Whats, huh? Burglars!" He looks to see a somewhat illuminated party. "What? Oh! Pathfinders? How'd you find me? Is it my turn to seek?"

Luisila (again):
He seems legitimately shocked to see you, though quickly recovers.

He lights a candle and deftly hops over the counter (though it sounds like that much popping should hurt. He waves the group in for what looks might be another secret meeting.

Please move yourselves inside. Dreng is providing candlelight and the moon covers pretty much the rest of the map in Dim Light.

After the casing is complete, the priestess smooths a stray lock of hair behind her right ear and puffs out her cheeks. “Looks like we’re going through the front door then.”

Before they enter, Luisila activates the light function on her wayfinder and asks Varg to accept her jingasa of the fortunate soldier.

+1 luck bonus to AC and CMD, once per day when struck by a critical hit or sneak attack, the wearer can spend an immediate action to negate the critical hit or sneak attack.

Dreng's wrinkled face calms down as he pops his head over the counter and waddles around the counter, a method of movement more akin to a man in his golden years. "Then get inside and close the door! You'll let in the breeze and maybe some assassin Shadows or something." He begins to pace around between the mannequins, keeping eyes on the doorway. "Last meeting? You answer with something notable in the room, object or dialogue-wise at the same time, so I know we're all who we say we are. On the count of three..."

Assuming nobody does anything impeccably silly or incriminating, he does answer with a wickedly accurate estimate, down to the minute, in his serious face. He then returns to his goofier expression, "Good, then since either one of you are Sidri and I'd need to compliment you on a successful infiltration or nobody's here to kill anybody else, let's get down to brass tacks."

Lu wrote:

"This place never truly closes; art never resting and whatnot. Sleeping attentively is an art I've perfected and this is an art house. You'd be surprised how many times we used to get ambushed in our sleep back in the olde days of delving Dungeons for Dragons; didn't have no 'Everything happens in about 3 fights in a single day and that's it' business Pathfinding nowadays has. It was all losing hands, finding new hands, nighttime assassins..." He reminisces a little before continuing. "Besides, I sometimes moonlight (daylight?) as a greeter here, because I like the pretty dresses and paintings. Plus, I keep a pillow to sleep under the counter on slow days and it lets me get away from the hustle an' bustle of Venture Captain-ing when I need to rest my bones. The Senior discount stacks with the Employee discount, too."

"Guards are in back, waiting for a fight to break out. Too many people is too suspicious, plus I don't even know if I can trust all of them anymore... But nobody, and I mean nobody, gets the jump on ol' Drendle Dreng." he makes punching motions towards a nearby mannequin, as if it were some assailant.

He continues to pace"The past aside, what did you learn? How many might be coming? Any names or evidence? If what you say is true, then maybe he did know of my meeting with you all and plans to pin my murder on you." He scratches his balding head in the hair-line area, "...and it sounds like this goes higher than expected. I fear these other Pathfinders might be in danger if they're who they are, but we'll have to investigate that in the morning. Let's hole up and wait for the inevitable."

He circles, thinking through his superiors as to who might be the culprit, "Zey? No, he'd just blast me out of the sky. Pharast? She might be in this for the long con. Hestrum? No, too irrelevant. Osprey? He's not even technically a Venture Captain..."

My favourite thing about this encounter thus far is how neither side has the skills they really need; Spellcraft for Dreng and Sense Motive for the party general. He has no idea what buffs you put up and that he'd have to talk for over an hour to waste them.

Everyone is generally aware of everyone else, but let's get the last final Sense Motive to see if anyone either of the ladies can crack his +21 again. Nobody got the initial check at the start of the scene, but I figure a courtesy skill check is in line for his new course of action.

However, Lin's experience in the company of bad prop comedians lets her piece the strange dialogue together before he can even finish! You beat him in init for his surprise transformation, so technically everyone is still flat-footed and unarmed (per se) while you've got an action.

@Lui: I have no strong preference one way or the other. If the player already rolls them/has some strong preference for it, I can go with that. If not, I can just roll it with the save. It's mostly reactionary saves from things I cast that I like to roll out to save time so dedicated healers know whether they need to cast Heal or Breath of Life, so to speak. Out of combat saves (especially with posters that are more frequent than I) I just let roll their own stuff, since "XX, XX, XX, Roll Fort DC Blank" and spoiler the potential result if it's something cool and/or wordy.

  • Linnea tries to trip the man, but he proves his un-jumpable-ness statement true as he Uncannily Dodges the maneuver!
  • Luisila casts "Detect Evil: The Easier Way!"... Old Man Reflex: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 He goes only affected by the dazzling effect, taking no damage! Strange, indeed. Even stranger, the wire frames do not have eyes but can still be affected by the burst of light! Blue Ref: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 It is... Blinded... I guess? Whatever it sees from, it's not going to for a few rounds!
  • Panfalcon fires off a duo of rays, which both connect with the only-somewhat-moving dress-wearers! It still stands, though some of the thick metal is heavily warped and goopy now!

Initiative Order:
Luisila, Panfalcon, Varg, Lin  still has a regular round turn!

Sorry, missed that I still get a regular turn.

Linnea, seeing that she failed to trip the Dreng-ster, takes a step back towards the comforting closeness of Cleaver and wriggles some buttery fingers towards the aggressive Venture Captain and one of his wire-rack minions. A puddle of grease appears underfoot.

Greenish square underneath Dreng and the wire rack behind him. DC 15 Reflex save or fall prone.

She then draws out her whip.

Mobile post!

ref (Dreng, ManneB): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 251d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 Dreng is fine as he has no major chance of falling! Blue continues to have a bad day and falls! Cleanup at the front register!

Dreng furrows his brow, peering through cataracts. "He's fooled you! Don't you see?!?" His strange claws make his statement suspect as he swings at the still-flat Ander! He opts not to move, because Acrobatics Checks are bad.

Dazzle is -2 to hit iirc, but I might be wrong. On mobile, so I'm gonna fix it later if I'm wrong. ~ Dazzled

Ouch. 44 damage.

Concentration DC 17: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

Severely wounded, Ander casts a spell, and vanishes, then moves toward Luisila. "Miss Luisila, can you aid me? I am bleeding profusely." Ander rasps as he puts a hand on her shoulder.

Can't edit map atm. Moving to the square south of Lu.

“OK then. I won’t!”

Luisila *rolls* her eyes at the fake Dreng.

Totally will.

I don’t think Varg has had his Round 1 action yet.

Correct; That's what I get for near-midnight posting. I also misinterpreted the grease; Blue isn't prone. That non moving stand fell over. Apologies for confusion; posting from mobile is butts.

You are aware his claws don't imply him to be some kind of undead.

  • I skipped Varg by accident!

  • Varg steps in and goes for the not-actually cleave! Dreng takes it to the side of the head, but keeps trucking! He responds, pained, to Varg's attack "Assassins! All of you!"

Round #2 bless 7/80 ; freedom of movement (Varg)

“Not bad, Ander but Calistria gives the best shoulder massages.”

Mini update! Varg thoroughly knocks out Dreng, while Luisila heals! It only takes the first hit (so movement is possible), but wire frames aren't likely to be affected by NL.

  • Luisila heals the injured magus!
  • Panfalcon fires a beam of necromancy, but fails to take full effect!
  • It matters little, however, since Varg knocks the Venture Captain right-out with his first swing. You can move if you want to abandon the full-attack after the first swing, if desired. Nonlethal probably won't work on something without organs.
  • Linnea barely tries, but successfully takes down the only standing, moving stand!
