The vrock releases a bunch of spores into the air!

Everyone adjacent (except Trevor) to it takes 1d8 ⇒ 6 Damage from the spores. These spores will grow into small green vines on who is affected.

Knowledge (planes) DC 24:
Other than doing damage as they grow over the next minute they are harmless. Although ugly, the vines wither away in a few days if not shaved off before then. The spores can be destroyed by casting bless on the affected creatures or by sprinkling them with holy water. This attack can also be halted by effects that remove or provide immunity to disease.

It also emits a loud screech that pounds your senses.

Kelkzar, yes you get monster lore included and know that bless can counteract the vines as well as immunity to disease but otherwise they are harmful beyond the damage they do

Yes with Rauno's failed save enlarge is lost.

Rowena lands a number of blows trying to trip it, but cannot sweep it off its feet. DMPC'ing Jirin Jirin hexes the creature and slows its reactions down slightly (Evil Eye for -2 to AC). Kelkzar follows with a pair of well landed slices, ripping apart the demon and sending back to the Abyss.

"Good thing I asked the Lady for that spell today. Sarenrae, let your blessing bring an end to the disease that harms these people."

Ok, then it appears Kelkzar is down 11, and Jirin 9. Do you want to heal that before heading on? Trevor is down 3 from a previous battle. Rowena is down Con but otherwise to full.

At the end of the long ramped hall, a grand chamber opens to a height of eighty feet. Opposite the entry is a tall octagonal column of jet-black stone, glowing with green symbols running up one of its faces. A deep pool of placid green liquid stands before the column, bathing the entire chamber in an otherworldly light.

Floating above the pool is a humanoid form with strange rubbery purple flesh, dressed in black robes, wielding a staff of red metal. Its head is hairless and bulbous, with four long tentacles where its mouth should be. Inside your heads you hear an alien voice speaking to you.

"You dare to enter my sanctum! Fools. I knew of your presence, and I see your thoughts already clouding with fear. I shall finish what Telakin could not. Your weak minds will be a sumptuous feast, your terror a pleasing garnish!"

This tentacle-faced creature is a mind flayer, also known as an illithid and is an aberration.

Mind flayers are so named for their ability to produce a powerful mind blast that stuns creatures. They commonly enslave sentient creatures to use as slave labor, chattel, or both.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC 26:
Mind flayers subsist on the brains of sentient beings. Their facial tentacles can grapple with an opponent and extract the brain in mere moments.

Round 1.

Rauno steps back to what he hopes is a little bit of cover (B18) as he draws his arcane rod and uses it to cast a spell to aid his allies.

Extended Haste on all PCs.


Rauno's supernatural instincts give him enough time to cast haste before the creature unleashes a mental assault like the first time you met as you were leaving the lower area of Sodden Hold.

Mind Blast hits everyone except Quintus. You need to make a Fort Save DC 20 or be stunned for 3d4 ⇒ (3, 1, 1) = 5 rounds

After the mind blast rolls over you, a pair of the smaller octopins come running down the walls and runs past the ones in the front and one lands in the middle of you while the other one plops down behind the group. Both of these octopins provoke. However remember that if you haven't gone already or have combat reflexes and made your fort save, you won't get one


Zyrxog is currently floating 20' above the pool. Moved Rauno to end of round to make future rounds flow better.

Quintus' trained reflexes take over as the octopins move in. Before he's consciously aware of their presence, his scimitar flashes twice, leaving broad slashes on the interlopers. Thanks for suggesting I take Combat Reflexes, Rowena! And I still have an AoO left over.

Kelkzar fights off the mind blast, steeling his mind against the intensity of the attack. The half-orc looks to the creature floating above the pool and knowing what it is instantly calls out, "Mind flayer! That attack it just hit us with was a mind blast. Don't let the tentacles grab you. It can rip your brain out of your head!" He scowls, looking for a way to get up in the air, "If any of you have a way to get me airborne, I'll go after him! But I'm starting with these things."

Ok, I think I do get an AoO against each octopin. The reason is that I currently have Paired Opportunists active and I am adjacent to Quintus. Paired opportunists allows me to take an AoO when my ally gets an AoO even if the situation would normally deny one to me.
