Vermin* |
Go for it. That provokes, and Vermin is feeling confident. >:) And he has a promise to keep...
That tactic is fine for a demon or a very evil NPC and at higher level. not too good in a First Steps 1. LOL There is a PFS mod whose name I will not provide to avoid spoilers, where demons first use Mass Hold Person and then Coup-de-grace the next round. Nasty. I recommend everyone work on their will saves...
Luccinus de Concorezio |
I am okay with Coup de grace moves but it makes no sense when 3 guys are coming at you to be slitting throats when you could be running unless you have a specific target you need dead.
GM Nel |
I will fire at H again reloading as a move action using standard materials. Attack:1d20+5;1d8
H is unconscious already, so you are probably firing at W. You can fire above Xavier and Vermin's heads. You are probably hitting with that roll anyway.
Dunn shoots the rapier-wielding man, hitting him square in the shoulder. "Ughhh" he exclaims, and he is looking staggered now. Looks like he would fall down at the drop of a hat. "Wait, wait. Come on don't kill me. Deandre said this would be easy money, and it is obviously not. I don't want to die here, especially not for that tramp."
H makes a stabilize check: 1d20 ⇒ 2 and bleeds out a bit more.
Xavier is up
Xavier Charlevesque |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Sensing that the man is telling the truth, Xavier holds his staff at the rapier-wielder's neck and lifts his chin so he's looking him in the eye. "Tsk, tsk, tsk," Xavier clicks. "It's bad form to bad mouth your leader when she lays unconscious. Now, if you want to walk away from this alley with what little blood you have remaining in you, tell us why you chose us as prey."
GM Nel |
"PSSSH! Some leader! Deandre was the one who planned everything. She was looking for capital to start a new gang, and figured amateur Pathfinders would be easy prey for a quick crown. I came here as a refugee from Galtan, and I just worked with her for the easy money."
"We had been staking out the Grand Lodge checking out for new recruits, and that's when we saw your group. Deandre hired the Jocund Pranksters while we monitored your progress to divert the crowds into the alley. We thought having you cornered in the alley would be to our advantage, but looks like we were not as sneaky as we thought earlier today."
"I've told you what I know, just let me go, man."
Vermin* |
I am going to take that a a Delay action.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
You should not have attacked me, little man. Believing the fight not to be over yet, and having a promise to keep, Vermin Two Weapon Fighting swings his staff first at the standing man and then at the identified leader on the ground. If he needs to 5 foot step to do this he does. I do not currently have access to the map.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 232d6 + 5 ⇒ (4, 1) + 5 = 10
1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 4 = 182d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 1) + 3 = 9
Explaining his actions to Xavier, he says This fight is not yet over. He betrays his leader now, but if she wakes and begins to fight again he might break his word to us and become a threat again. I will not stay my hand with friends on the ground at risk.
Edit - seeing that I have a threat: rolling to confirm:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 102d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 5) + 3 = 14
I suspect I do not confirm:
Xavier Charlevesque |
Xavier's eyes go wide for only a moment as Vermin beats the man down. Then, a narrow smile appears before he says, "I believe he was telling the truth and would have stood down. But I appreciate your tenacity and focus. I am glad to know you're on my side. What would you do with his friends who lie asleep?"
Vermin* |
Sorry if it was not clear. Second hit was delivered to the woman leader who is currently unconscious. I added in +4 for her being prone.
Vermin looks confused at the question. Its as if you asked what you should do with a sandwich when you are hungry. He glances down at the unconscious female leader whom he just struck with his second attack. They attacked us. We kill them. If you cannot harm sleeping enemies, at least ready an attack for when they wake and try to attack us. Almost as an afterthought he asks How long will they be out?
Vermin* |
Just you, me, and Dunn up atm... No coup-de-grace. That's a full round action, and I do not want to encourage our DM to do likewise. :)
Vermin* |
If we are out of initiative Vermin will try to stabilize the bleeding bandits (Assuming Dunn and Xavier do the rope work).
Heal Checks:
Caster first 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Guy who took that AOO on me IF he is still alive 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Hey, I tried... Anyone else?
I cannot stop the bleeding from these two. Can one of you help?
Dunn, Son of Absalom |
I don't have any particular interest in aiding our attackers but I supposed we should do something. Let's tie them up and call for the authorities With that he begins searching for some sort of lashing to use. Perception:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Knowledge(Local):1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 To recall anything about the local authorities that may change his mind to attempt to contact them.
Luccinus de Concorezio |
After Luccinus recovers from his 'indisposition' he checks their bonds.
I shall fetch the Gray Cloaks - law must be upheld and we cannot murder. Besides, this 'aid' to the local authorities will only help to improve our standing and that of the Society in general.
With that said he rapidly departs seeking Absoloms law enforcement.
Vermin* |
Vermin carefully (taking 20) loots all the prisoners. He will also cast Detect magic to help find and identify magical loot.
GM Nel |
As Luccinus finds the authorities, Vermin checks out the unconscious bodies of the bandits you find:
On Deandre the leader:
potion of cure light wounds
potion of shield of faith
masterwork chain shirt
short sword
dagger
gray mask
unholy symbol of Norgorber
On Halli the mage:
2 potion of cure light wounds

scroll of obscuring mist
scroll of shield
scroll of unseen servant
wand of disguise self (5 charges)
dagger
light xbow and 20 bolts
fan of pidgeon feathers
small pouch of trimmed fingernails
On Larkin the rogue:
elixir of hiding
chain shirt
rapier
dagger
notebook of jokes
inq
quill
small hand puppet of Lord Gyr
8gp
On Ledford the halfling:
potion of cure light wounds

block of wax
fine comb with long handle
bottle of whiskey
4 fine cups
25gp
GM Nel |
At the end of the day, Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin thanks you for carrying out his tasks, and assures them that not every mission for the Pathfinder Society involves running errands about Absalom.
"Pathfinders, I am more than pleased with your performance today. You have done a great service for the Grand Lodge and the Society in general. You have proved to me your skills and responsibility. I promise your next assignment in the near future will take you outside Absalom's unassailable walls."
"Actually, I know of at least ONE Venture-Captain who seems to be already interested in your specific group. When you are ready, please come back and we will talk about arranging a meeting."
GM Nel |
I have uploaded a copy of the chronicle you will be each receiving. You all managed to find all the items, so you get access to all of them. Additionally, you each earn 2 PP and 2 Fame with your chosen faction (or no faction, if you don't want to pick one yet, that's ok). You also get 417 gold.
The next thing I need from everyone is:
1. Are you selling or buying any gear? Remember, a good rule of thumb is 25% of cash go to offense, 25% of cash goes to defense, and 10% to consumables.
2. Are you spending your 2 PA on anything? Most common use for 2 PA is obtaining any item worth up to 750gp for free. Most common use for this is a level 1 wand, such as cure light wounds, infernal healing, restore eidolon, or mage armor. Archers might also get a Darkwood MWK Composite Longbow with the +x STR you want. My personal suggestion is at least some of you get a healing wand. Anyone who doesn't its probably ok until we finish part 2 then you can get one with your next 2 PA. It's just good idea to have. Even if you dont have CLW on your spell list or UMD trained, you can always hand it to the cleric at the start of every adventure :)
3. Are you planning on staying for part 2
After I get everyone's data I can fill out and email filled sheets so you can print them out and have them if you want to use your characters at a PFS event.
GM Nel |
Welcome all, to First Steps Part 2
The next morning, each of you are called into the Grand Lodge, where you are given a invitation to a local party:
"Greetings fellow Pathfinder,
You are cordially invited by our dearest Venture-Captain Amara Li, to a party being held this evening at the Lantern Lodge, her beautiful and exotic estate in Absalom’s Petal District. Tonight, is the Snapdragon Festival, a traditional Gokan holiday featuring fireworks and rich plum wine. Please keep in mind your attire when attending the event, as only the most influential and important members of society are invited to this most formal celebration. Upon your arrival, please seek out your hostess, as she has a most urgent matter to discuss with you and your companions."
Cordial regards, The Lantern Lodge
You have heard about these parties at the petal district before. The expected attire is at least a Courtier's Outfit or equivalent quality clothing.
Furthermore, excessive weaponry is usually scorned at at these parties, although weapons are usually not confiscated at the door.
The Lantern Lodge is a faction of Pathfinders and other adventurers hailing from the Tien Xia continent of Golarion.
You can let me know what yo want to do before heading out
Vermin* |
Who hands Vermin this invite? He has none of the knowledge skills listed so he wants to ask whoever gave him the invitation about what to wear.
As his team gathers he will ask them So, I guess hide armor is out. I am going to have to buy some new "attire". What is everyone gonna wear?
Luccinus de Concorezio |
I shall show in my new Tian Xia themed armour but will add a colourful banner and some ribbons... camouflage it if you will. That way I am festive AND practically dressed for any challenge at arms.
Spend 1 gp on fripperies to make my armour more Tien themed
Xavier Charlevesque |
Xavier curses quietly when seeing their latest "mission." He had countless sets of expensive clothing back in Westcrown. But he didn't expect to need them here as a member of The Society. Turning to Vermin he says, "Sadly, our armor is not as a stylish as our esteemed colleague's. We should likely go purchase something more appropriate."
Turning to Dunn, he says, "Dunn, I don't suppose you would happen to know a tailor near here, would you? It seems that I will need to procure a nice set of clothing for this evening's festivities."
I see that a Courtier's outfit is 30GP - is that the amount we should expect to spend? Or do we need nicer clothing than that?
Vermin* |
Vemin will spring for a Courtier's outfit. Is it possible to get one specifically flavored for Tian Xia?

I guess the letter doesn't specifically say anything about the Tien, but it is fairly common knowledge that's where the Lantern Lodge is from. There is also more info if you can open the spoiler tags above :P
Looks like Vermin is grabbing a Courtier's outfit and Luccinus some tien-ified trimmings for his armor. Any other purchases? Dunn or Sohali (Aware they might still be awol)
Xavier Charlevesque |
Ah...I completely missed the Lantern Lodge. My bad. And I'm good at not reading spoilers I'm not supposed to. Normally. This was one of those times. :)
Xavier will accompany Vermin to acquire a courtier's suit as well, though he will try to find one that is distinctly Chelish in its design.

Harper Montajay III |
I would like to buy a courtier's outfit as well. I GMed the first scenario in this series last night and would like to add the cert to this guy to catch up. I will spend the 2 PA on a wand of CLW.
Vermin* |
Well met little Harper.I am called Vermin. The large half orc offers. Let us shop together. Perhaps you can advise me Xavier here on what cloths to buy.
Harper Montajay III |
Harper Looks timidly at the large half orc and bows deeply.
Well met Vermin. Why that is just my specialty. I once served as a steward in a Tien court!
Bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
*Wonders how he is going to make the big guy presentable.
Vermin* |
Sense Motive 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Ah, then I am most fortunate that you are joining us now. Please lead on.
Fung Xi |
Oop, I can't make either of those Knowledge checks.
I don't have any finery, perhaps I should dress to the occasion as well...
I'll spend the 30 gp on the courtier's outfit. Will note it on my profile.
Harper Montajay III |
A charismatic looking red-headed, well dressed halfling smiles at Fung and bows.

"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Fung. I assume your are new to the group as well?
Griff H. |
To describe my character, he is an average height human, low 20ish for his age (looks just out of his teens). He has pale skin, and in contrast has a plain, jet black robe that looks like it has some armor under it. His hair is also jet black, partly covering his face. He has a light crossbow with very few bolts at his side, and no other weapons.
He acts, for the most part, detached from the world and keeps quiet. However, when he does speak, he has surprising spurts of poetry and charm.
This introduction would have happened before we were invited to the party:
Life is like a rope;
At first, it seems to durable;
It bends, but can snap back;
You can pull it, and it stays taut;
But bring yet a simple blade, and it breaks apart with ease;
The darkness has granted me the power to mend these breaks;
To make life a little more durable.
Perform (Oratory): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
My name is Griff;
A name of pronunciation in stark contrast to my true character.
Griff looks towards the ground.
You can blame my parents for that one.
I am excited to begin a journey anew with those who see the world in a similar manner as myself.
Griff will actually refuse to buy a courtier's outfit, as it is a symbol of conformity, which is something he strongly does not believe in.
Fung Xi |
Nihao, little Harper. It is nice to meet you. Turning to the dark featured young man, And you too, Griff.
The young monk, standing 5'6" tall, dressed in a simple vest and loose fitting pants, smiles at all of them. This is one of the finest festivals of my homelands... It's going to be fun!
