Disclaimer: Do not accept Burglar's claims as "claims." As soon as he sees the play test, he will likely want to make something entirely different. In fact, he might be thinking about making a Slayer, only to spout Slayer song titles and lyrics while making it Rain Blood.

One of our local players has an Oracle of metal named Raan Deio.

This Slayer concept is now an absolute must.

If I do make a music-themed character, I really should pick a band I know more than 2 titles for, do ho ho. But Face the Slayer would be fun to yell at EVERYONE! Maybe Maiden, but I want to save those ideas for if I have to make any more SpelljammerDistant Worlds encounters for the S&S game I'm helping run.

Fun fact: The Skull and Shackles game I played in became Dio-themed when one player made "Ronnie James Dio in the Holy Diver video verbatim, just more tattoos" as a cleric of Gorum. I helped the GM build encounters around both Rainbow in the Dark, Holy Diver, and Man on the Silver Mountain (though the 3rd one was scrapped before the actual DM learned of it since I want to hold out on using that song title in case I have to run Iron Gods.) A new third idea was later imagined as a late-game encounter built around Black Sabbath's "Iron Man," but is slated for use if we return to the AP (so to speak; we finished all the AP books, but are willing to continue if the DM wants to run more.)

LOL, yeah, I'd be in the same boat with Slayer; death metal is admittedly not My Thing.

OTOH, I know a guy (and he's not Szcarni, LOL) who might just do that concept justice. With your permission, I'll bounce it off of him. :-)

Love the Dio encounters idea.

Sovereign Court

You can have the idea; it's nothing original. But yeah, the Dio encounters fell together perfectly. I'd post here what they were, but I think people are playing in that right now, kind of? (Not an AP I'd reccomend as a Module Mode for PFS play. It's tastier as an actual AP.) My only unhappy moment was when the RitD encounter did NOT include Shadow Demons with Tetori levels.

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

Yeah, not sure on a name yet, but when I do create a swashbuckler character (which I'm sure will happen soon), I want to base the persona off of Adam Ant, the early 80's New Wave/Brit Pop singer.

Male Mostly Harmless Incorrigible Punster 5/ Militant Grammarist 3/ Contrarian 2

YES! Ranks in Perform (strip)! :-)

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

I just think it would be funny for him to shout, "Stand and DELIVER!" at the start of every combat.

Linnea was originally supposed to be like that, but she changed a bit as I played her.

Male Mostly Harmless Incorrigible Punster 5/ Militant Grammarist 3/ Contrarian 2

Hmm, that could make for an interesting Battle Herald.

Sovereign Court

Guys, let's not make horrible concepts that are blatantly and shamelessly based on music pop media entities for this! First level rebuilds, hooooooooooooo!

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

Hey Baron, I lack imagination. Without pop culture, my life is a drudgery of work, wife and kids.

Just kidding honey! On the off-chance you would log in to a site for a game that you have no interest in playing.

Sovereign Court

I came in with a Blo-od-ra-ger.
All I wanted was to crit your boss.
But all you did was
Cri-hih-hit me.
Cri-hih-hit me.

(I don't know the rest of that horrible, horrible song, other than she sounds like she's saying "Rainbow" when she said "wrecking ball.")

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

HAHA. I didn't get it at first. Wonderful stuff.

Don't forget to stick your tongue out for no discernible reason.

Mine too, LOL.

And my wife is about as likely...though she does look at my wishlist stuff. Hmm.

That's her twang.

Or something.

The link to the playtest document was (apparently) up for a few minutes, but is down again. THAT'S WHAT I GET FOR DOING WORK. D:

Male Mostly Harmless Incorrigible Punster 5/ Militant Grammarist 3/ Contrarian 2

The link to the page is still available, but the news page got taken down.

Male Mostly Harmless Incorrigible Punster 5/ Militant Grammarist 3/ Contrarian 2

Hmm, they changed the page. Figures.

New link.

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

Whoo. Managed to get on to the site. Now to see if I can download the doc.

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

Okay, it's in my downloads. After three attempts, I have not been able to access my downloads page, but it's there!

Finally able to see the message boards.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Hey, message boards are working again!

Yeah, it took me a while to access it. Already been looking through it with Becca. I think she's going to retrain her Carrion Crown fighter>duelist into a Swashbuckler.

Also, I feel bad for the guy who paid several hundred dollars for that assassin boon only to have it basically become a base class with the Slayer. At least it went to charity.

The Exchange

Elven Rogue Swashbuckler/6; HP 45/45; AC 23; T 17/FF 18 /CMD 20; Fort +3 /Ref +9 /Will +2; Init +6 ; Perc +11; Sense Motive +0

Yeah...I am all over that Slayer!

Personal impressions on the Advanced Classes:

Arcanist - A good mix between sorcerer/wizard. Fewer memorized spells, but the ability to spontaneously cast from the memorized list is interesting.

Bloodrager - I like this. My character Aod would have been one of these if he wasn't already a 4th level Bard/Barbarian/Magi.

Brawler - Hmm. Sort of seems like a superior Martial Artist. Martial Maneuvers ability seems way too powerful. I smell cheese here, but that might be the Slayer.

Slayer - Basically a ranger with sneak attack who can designate anything as a favored enemy with a move action (though the bonus being +1 rather than +2 might be a reasonable compromise). This class also feels like it steps on the inquisitor's toes a bit, but I think I'll have to see one in action.

Swashbuckler - A fighter/gunslinger with a grit/deed like pool for pulling off swashbuckling feats is nice, but they don't have access to firearms, which is very strange to me.

Investigator - I Like this class a lot. I have an alchemist that might have chosen this class instead if it was available.

Skald - Good idea, but poor construction. Rage Song and Rage Powers are appropriate (and since the Rage Song adds a bonus to Strength and Con it would stack with a regular Bard's Courage ability). This class should have a d10 Hit Die, A full Base Attack progression, and it's bardic spells pushed back to 4th level (like a ranger or paladin).

Hunter - Meh. Got bored, didn't finish reading it. Have to admit that I'm not big on pets.

Shaman - Meh. Lost interest looking through all the spirit options.

War Priest - Just Meh.

Final Note: Even though I like some of these advanced classes, I think the restriction on multiclassing is a little harsh.

Male Mostly Harmless Incorrigible Punster 5/ Militant Grammarist 3/ Contrarian 2

First pass thru:

  • Arcanist is what Sorcerer should have been all along. Maybe.
  • Bloodrager means I will never play another Barbarian (unless they nerf it in print). Everything I like about Bbn (with the meh, to me anyway, stripped out) and a limited (read: Magus) spell list.
  • Brawler pwns Monk in every way (except Will saves).
  • Hunter is kinda cool flavor-wise.
  • I really wanna like the investigator...and I really don't. Or rather, it's kinda blah to me. (And this is coming from a guy who never trades trapfinding for anything.)
  • Shaman appears to be a fixed Witch. (Which is a Good Thing [tm].)
  • Skald is pretty much what I thought it would be.
  • Like the Slayer. Wanted to love it, but I think we're only gonna be "just friends."
  • Swashbuckler is more "meh" than I thought it would be. But then I didn't dig on the gunslinger at first blush either.
  • The Warpriest is exactly what I wanted. Right down to the Domain Lite feature. Switching to this in Wrath of the Righteous, pending GM approval.

Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

I think I'll try out either the Skald or Warpriest first.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Since others are doing it:

  • Arcanist: Not terribly exciting. Too similar to the sorcerer. It's a very niche class with not a lot of unique flavor.
  • Bloodrager: Very cool but as Thunderspirit said, I'm worried no one will ever play a barbarian again. They get nearly everything a barbarian gets plus some; their rage should maybe be less powerful or something.
  • Brawler: Damn. This is a cool class but I'm worried it makes the monk totally irrelevant.
  • Hunter: Neat but I'm not terribly interested. The focus on teamwork feats is cool but I honestly don't know of many good ones. Every inquisitor I've met has basically the same two or three teamwork feats.
  • Investigator: I actually really like this class. Great flavor and a nice mix of abilities. I'm just trying to figure out how to make it effective in combat because it seems to be Skill Monkey: The Class.
  • Shaman: I was expecting something a little different than how it turned out but I guess it's pretty neat. I'd have to try it out before I decided.
  • Skald: Exactly what I was expecting and a very cool class. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.
  • Slayer: Yup, it's an Assassin base class. Very neat but may have the potential to destroy things a little too much.
  • Swashbuckler: I'm sure there will be an archetype that gets a gun. I like the panache system and the flavor fits the mechanics. It's basically a Duelist base class, which is good because Duelist takes too long to get to, especially for Society play. My fiancee is already reworking her duelist fighter into a Swashbuckler.
  • Warpriest: So, a paladin without alignment restrictions. Kind of. I've never played a cleric but it looks fine to me.

Another note: I agree with DM Rah. I'm an unashamed multiclasser. The restrictions on multiclassing are pretty rough and I don't think totally necessary. Especially for things like the Swashbuckler which has very little overlap with its hybrid classes. I could easily see a Swashbuckler/Gunslinger or Swashbuckler/Fighter. This applies to several of the classes.

Sovereign Court

Note: Devs have stated somewhere where that the Swashbuckler will have a gun-using archetype. They just didn't want to make a second base(ish) class option for using guns.

  • Arcanist: A good stepping stone for a learning player going from sorcerer to Wizard.
  • Bloodrager: While some of these options are REALLY powerful (Good Aligned weapons from level 1 while raging? Yes, please,) they don't have Rage Powers. The Barbarian is fine and still has its purposes.
  • Brawler: I was happy with this results. Again, the monk is still relevant, as is every unarmed build I could think of. The monk is VERY high-mobility, the unarmed fighter has access to style feats immediately, and the unarmed barbarian is STILL out-damaging this class (playtest pending.) This fits an in-between for less-knowledgable players to play a monk-esque character without taking feats and such that end up being useless. "Grapple's pretty cool. I think I'll Improved Grapple for a few minutes here..." "How did I never take Power Attack?!? I'll have that for now!" etc.
  • Hunter: Full BAB, Full Companion? I was worried about the Mad Dog barbarian, though I don't have an actual CRB on-hand, so I'm not sure if this is a Ranger list or a Druid list. Still, people (including myself) are REALLY BAD about running animal companions as intelligent creatures, and this feels like it might flood the market, so to speak.
  • Investigator: A skills-based class in a system that can circumvent the need for skills (depending on the DM or campaign)? I'm skeptical at the usefulness outside of APs or bigger adventures, but it looks functional at least.
  • Shaman: This feels like the Warlock, but not the Warlock. And it also feels like it needs a lot of system mastery to pick what two spirits you want (at 4th) or risk picking a LOT of stuff you don't need repeatedly.
  • Skald: Empathetic Rager (or whatever that half-orc feat is) and that one Second Darkness campaign trait takes this class REALLY far. It's a Bardbarian; nothing more, nothing less. But really, Scribe Scroll?
  • Slayer: METAL STORM/FACE THE SLAYER! I likey. It's what I loved from the Freebooter with nothing I don't like (plus sneak attack!) Definitely my favoutite, though I agree with the "Too bad for the Assassin boon guy," though he did pay a couple hundred dollars for a cert in the worst prestige class in PFRPG EVER. I've seen one death from a Death Attack, and that was simply because it was the hilarious 5% chance of autofailing the check from a naturally invisible creature. Plus, it's a d10 hit die now (according to the playtest forum! Hooray!)
  • Swashbuckler: Melee character with Grit. I'm not gonna judge this class until I see archetypes for it, though.
  • Warpriest: Want to be a Cleric without all those "too many powers all at once" issues? Here's some cookie-cutter-feeling powers! I mean, neat idea and it has its purpose (as all these classes have so far,) but I don't think I'll be playing one. If I'm a cleric, I want that full spell progression. Here's the big issue with that class: What about Exotic Weapon deities like Calistria, Achektek or Ragathiel? They're not proficent in their own Weapon Focus weapon (and can't take the feat at 1st due to not-full BAB!)

It seems like something she'd yell at Ernest, only to freak him out (though he's now a Certified Pathfinder Agent, so it might not work*.)

I think the Slayer is the ONLY thing I really though "Golly, I REALLY want to make one of these RIGHT NOW," of the playtest. Despite how flooded that market's gonna be, I think I'm gonna make one and then complain when they release an awesome archetype I want but he'll be over 2nd level.

    *:
That's an absolute lie. While he has been working out and got a bunch new class skills and lost some weight, he's still deathly afraid and confused of women in general.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Is there retraining in Ultimate Campaign to pick up an archetype? It'll cost you quite a bit of PP and GP I imagine, but it might be possible.

    Sovereign Court

Oh, there is, but it's 5pp per feature dropped. Slayer's got a LOT of features. I almost retrained my 13th cavalier into an archetype, but it was gonna take almost 40PP to do so. I decided on something else (and ended up being useless anyways, but that's just because he was my first character.)

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

I spent 50 PP on founding my own lodge and I spent 10 PP giving my dragon disciple new feats so she could take advantage of the raktavarna Improved Familiar boon she had.

I haven't looked into it but I imagine it's only the features changed that you currently have (at least that would make the most sense). So if you retrain at a low level it's possible.

    Signboy77's PFS Scenario-rama

Endless, apart from the obvious cool factor of having your own society lodge, are there any benefits to having that lodge?

    Sovereign Court

While in the same nation as your lodge, you may requisition one or more lower-ranked Pathfinders to assist you for a short time. At the beginning of an adventure, you gain 10 temporary Prestige Points you can spend only on purchasing follower vanities. At the end of the adventure, the followers return to their normal duties, and any unspent temporary Prestige Points are lost. If your character holds the title of venture-captain, this vanity costs only 25 PP.

That said, the Houndmaster Archetype costed roughly the same and Hernando was unoptimized enough that I once spent PA for a raise, so that shot that right out the door.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

There you go. It was very fitting for my Boy-Scout-esque All-Golarion Pathfinder character. Unfortunately his Lodge is in Taldor and there aren't any 7-11 scenarios in Taldor that I know of (or that I haven't already played).

I also didn't realize at the time

    Eyes of the Ten spoiler:
that you could become a VC after doing Eyes of the Ten or I would have waited to buy my lodge for half-cost. 25 PP down the drain, oh well. I wanted it as soon as I could afford it.

    Sovereign Court

Given that stuff in EotT is some of the best-kept secrets-for-sale in PFS, I think that's the intent. Plus, the benefits are far more useful BEFORE retiring (given that modules give 3 xp era and usually take place in one area as opposed to three scenarios), so the cost seems justified.

    I love lamp.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

True. I'm not retiring him at 13.2 though; we have plans to run some of the higher modules and I'll of course bring him to the special next year (I'll actually have two 13+ characters to choose from). But I'm not holding my breath on any of them taking place in Taldor. I could have made it a more useful country but his family is from Taldor so it made the most sense (even though there's already an established Lodge in Cassomir-now there are two!).

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

    You guys lose your VC?

Yeah, our VL stepped down a while ago and the Indy people were pushing for me to take over but I said no because I didn't have the time for the extra work. Besides, Phil, the owner of the Common Room where all our games are held, organizes and reports everything and basically does all the leg-work that VLs do so it would have been weird to have two PFS authorities in town. He didn't want the VL job because he felt it was inappropriate for the store owner to be the VL.

In the end we told them Bloomington is doing just fine without a VL and they appointed me as the "store liaison to Common Room games" which is a primarily ceremonial title.
