Nature 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 4 = 21

Section 3 produces 4 successes (t'Klik, Taanak, Monoc, Lemris) and 2 failures (Ojal and Shamash). With a total of 10 successes over the challenge, you have achieved victory. XP award and info on the silt runner lair to follow

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Thus proving conclusively that Ojal should never have left Urik :)

You each receive 100 XP. I must apologise - Ojal actually succeeded in the last section!

The group have found what appears to be the main base for the silt runners raiding activities. The terrain has given way to an area of broken valleys. It would seem that from your observations, the main activity is to the north of your present position, and that there are two main ways into the valley area. The first is through an area of broken outcroppings that would be ideal for an ambush, or as a guard post. The second is more open but has some unusual terrain that seems to be constructed by sentient beings.

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Learning from his mistakes, Ojal gestures politely to T'klik and Taanak.

"I'm sure you've both got better ideas about how we should approach these silt-runners. They look well prepared to my untutored eye."

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

"T'klik want ambush them, the natural outcroppings work best. Stone made by the world, buildings made by man, stone standing much longer than man's buildings." He chitters.

Then suggests, "Me think we check ambush site for ambush waiting, then me can sneak in and get idea of what inside as you get in good hide."

Male Goliath Barbarian 1

"Good. We turn the ambush in the rocks." Monoc clearly approves of T'klik's simple plan.

So, what's the plan, gang?

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

We investigate the ambush site to ensure there isn't one already waiting for us. The rest of the group finds good hide positions, while I go scout (if someone else has good stealth we can go together). I will then lead a group back to the ambush site.

Fabes I have a question in the discussion thread if you haven't seen it yet.

The terrain is somewhat like this:
>>>>THE VALLEY<<<<

The terrain is very open, so T'klik will have to remain low (as I'm sure you realise). The rest of the group can squat on the slopes, and T'klik can Stealth to get closer. IF you can also roll a Perception check as well, that would be great

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Ojal keeps low and watches as T'klik ventures into the dunes.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Male Athasian Elf Shaman 1

The elf crouches low with the others and surveys the landscape for signs of an ambush.

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20 Also, don't forget that anyone within 5 squares of Taanak gets +1 on Perception thanks to my racial ability.

Sorry, I only meant that T'klik needs to make a Perception check. The rest of you can but will take a substantial penalty.

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

The 'L'-shaped alcove on the upper right (just off the middle) of the pic would be great for a hide spot. If there is something like that

T'klik lightly scratches his carapace all over before semi-burying himself in the sand. Small granules of the local sand color stick in some of the scratches to help him camouflageStealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Moving ahead, ensuring that he stays close to ridge so he can skip from cover to cover, T'klik keeps his keen multi-faceted eyes on the terrain for any signs of his quarry. Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Male Goliath Barbarian 1

Monoc waits impatiently, weapon gripped tight, for the scouting T'klik to return. He carefully damps down the battle-rage growing within him, waiting for the time of bloodshed.

T'klik creeps closer to the outcroppings, confident that he hasn't been noticed. His keen eyes spy silt runners hiding, waiting in ambush.

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

Do I have a clear shot at one of them within 10sq?

They all have superior cover (-5 to hit) at this point.

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

T'klik decides to go ahead and get their attention, and hope they take the bait.

He steps out of his hiding place, with his back to the ambush, walking back toward the party at a normal pace. All the while pretending to be looking for something on the ground.

He hopes that the site of a lone Kreen, not paying attention will be a tantalizing enough target to follow.

Guessing surprise round. So, if I only have one action I will take a single move action, to be closer to our own ambush. I don't want them to think I'm running, as a running TK would be hard to catch.

The rest of the group are about 100 ft (20 squares away) to give you an idea.

The mantis-man hears squawks of alarm as he makes his presence known. As he studiously pretends to be not suspicious in the slightest, he can tell that there is a small commotion at the outcroppings. One of the silt runners makes a dash northwards.

i.e. in the opposite direction to you. You are all to the south.

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Can any of us hear the squawking?

Male Goliath Barbarian 1

I have a bad feeling about this...

"If T'klik needs help, it will be quick. All is ready?" Monoc looks around at the others, and shifts his grip on his own weapon.

You can faintly hear something.

The rest of you can make out T'klik standing up and walking back slowly towards your position. No silt runners are following.

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

If nothing stops me I will continue to walk at normal speed back towards the group. I will not stop at the group, and instead walk past them, letting them know there was an ambush, and that they are on alert.

T'klik returns to the group and moves past them.

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Ojal lies low and watches T'klik casually passing by.

"I think he's found something. We should ready ourselves."

Male Athasian Elf Shaman 1

"Agreed. They are likely to reinforce this position. I suggest we take advantage of this distraction and circle around to the other entrance to the valley. They may have placed traps there, but if we are vigilant, we may be able to turn this to our advantage and gain the element of surprise."

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

After he moves past them enough to remove suspicion, T'klik regains cover and sneaks his way back to the group.

Stealth, at normal speed, 1d20 + 9 - 5 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 5 = 22

Male Dray Swordmage 1

"Weirdest ambush I ever saw."

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

"They not take bait, they run raise alarm. Maybe we move around behind ones on side opposite of direction of other path. If we kill that side, other side need cross ambush valley to get to us. If alarm put guards in other path, they need come more far to reach us." T'klik chitters, while angling his head and twitching his antennae in thought.

Male Goliath Barbarian 1

"Maybe we match strength, not match wits."

I personally am unable to come up with a better plan than T'klik's. What say we just go for a full frontal assault and put them down asap :)

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

"What does anyone know about silt-runner tactics?"

Ojal peers cautiously over the dunes, hoping that a hail of stones doesn't appear out of nowhere and knock him cold.

As previously noted their tactics are guerilla, ambush , hit and run. They'll be back, and in greater numbers, as Obi-Wan might say. What's your plan, then, gang? I'm not sure I altogether understand T'klik's due to his very cool, but idiosyncratic speech. :D

Male Dray Swordmage 1

"Perhaps, since they have just sent away one of their number, we should attack them here before help arrives. We can spend ages navigating round the desert but for a lot of us it isn't our strong point. On the other hand, storming an enemy position is something I do know about."

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

Sorry, what I am saying, is there are two paths, say one on the left and one on the right. If we are on the right one, and not the left. I say we attack the right SIDE of the right path. That way the left side of the right path has to cross the right path to get to us. The left and right side of the left path has to cross also the right path to reach us. We would in essence split the waves, and make them cross the open area that is good for ambushes, or they take the long way around. I hope that helps, if I could draw it in the sand in front of us it might, lol

I think I'm the one who better draw a map, otherwise we'll end up talking at cross purposes! :D Will sketch out the terrain and post it later.

>>>>AREA MAP<<<<

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Joy. Better get ourselves organised into some kind of useful formation and prepare to repel boarders.

"Oh, dear. Some preparation may be in order."

Male Goliath Barbarian 1

"I agree with Shamash. Full attack. Now, before more come."

I say we charge in, keeping near to the right hand slopes. We kill anything that moves as quickly as possible, then get ourselves set to defend those rocks from any follow-up silt runner force. In short we just try to overwhelm them.

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

"There is space between large outcropping ahead, if can take them, we may able hold them good."

Yes, rush the outcroppings, and maintain a defense there.

Male Athasian Elf Shaman 1

"Agreed. Those of us with ranged abilities can cover the sides near the slope while melee fighters enter the breach and confront the main force with supporting fire behind them. Make haste."

If you're ready to roll with that then, I shall draw up a battlemap.

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Go for it.

Male Dray Swordmage 1

"Alright, Monoc, me and T'klik first, then Ojal and Taanak right behind providing back-up us as we charge. We stay together, and don't split up, so that the silt runners have to attack us as a group, not singly. We hit the rocks hard and fast and kill all we find, but unless we can stay together or kill them at range we leave any that run."

Shamash draws his huge blade. "Who is with me?"

Rock on.

Male Goliath Barbarian 1

Monoc bares his teeth in a fearsome grimace, and touches fist to chest. "I am with you."

Let's do this :)

Please each make a Stealth check at a -2 penalty.

Male Human Awakened Psion 1

Stealth: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (11) - 2 = 9

Shaken out of his reverie, Ojal finds himself making an inconvenient amount of noise.

Male Dray Swordmage 1

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (13) - 2 = 11

Male Thri-Kreen Monk 1, Centered Breath, Wasteland Nomad

Stealth: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 9 - 2 = 19

Wary of their proximity to the Silt Runners, T'klik tries to maintain his hide while they discuss their plan.

Male Athasian Elf Shaman 1

Stealth: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

Taanak keeps his head low and follows the others.
