Fabian's Carrion Hill (Inactive)

This is a test run of a hybrid system combining the best qualities of a PBEM and PBP. The game has already started as PBEM so we'll just play the last part as a 'hybrid'.

I would recommend... that Nadia stay where she is. :)

Seriously, this thing is only one size bigger but it's got got a CMD of 31.

The worst that can happen is that Nadia wastes her action, incurs an AoO, and is left right in front of it.

Without trying to metagame the event, I would think that Nadia would know her limitations. Be frustrated as hell but not try it.

ooc: That's what I needed to know :) Thanks! I had a feeling it would be a wasted effort but I'm pretty sure that Nadia would want to get to Bastion if at all possible.

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

With a quick glance, Kiergard caught sight of Bastion falling to the beast's continued assault. His experienced battle trained eyes scanned the bloodied chamber and he rapidly weighed a number of options while parrying the relentless tentacle attacks.

His heart went out to his fallen foppish companion, but he had warned Bastion that this might happen. Kiergard could call upon Desna's grace for small reserves of healing, but to do so would require holding back on his assault of the beast. Having seen his companions repeated efforts so easily rebuffed by the creature, Kiergard was sure that the path of victory lay with his sword - the enchanted blade that sought to destroy these abmoniations.

With a heavy heart, Kiergard had quickly come to his decision. For the good of the remaining companions and for the town itself he must accept Bastion's possible sacrifice and press on with the attack. Doing anything else would foolishly grant the beast more time to defeat them all. He dare not be enslaved beneath the fear of these abmoniations and he knew that Desna blessed those who created their own luck.

"FREEDOM!"

His voice echoed of the now slick walls of the room. He wrestled back control of his magical blade and shoved his shield into the gruesome mass before him.

ON HIT: His sword arm swung vicously, repeatedly and with deadly accuracy, sending bits of the beast flying in all directions.

ON MISS: But for all his conviction, Kiergard's blade failed to hurt the creature. The abomination shrieked with a strange cackling glee as if it knew it had held back the warriors surge.

ACTIONS:
KEEP SWINGING!!!!
1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 = 16
.. I don't know how many action points Kiergard had, but if he has any, he'll use that as well 1d6 ⇒ 4

..doh...

Female Human Sorceror 5

IC: Brana watched helplessly as Bastion fell to the ground. ~At least the creature let him go.~ she thought to herself. Brana moved toward the ranger and grabbed his clothing attempted to drag him out of the beast's reach. She eyed the creature as she did so, praying to Gozreh the beast wouldn't snatch her up and crush her like it had Crove, Linstrenn and Bastion.

ooc: I've got a couple cure potions to give Bastion if Brana can pull him away. Ideally she would drag Bastion to Q14 and return to where she is right now in P15. Next round she'll spend her entire round retrieving from her pack and attempting to coax a Cure Mod potion down Bastion's throat.

ic: Nadia stared in horror as Linstrenn was beaten against the wall. Then she saw Bastion go down and again she was helpless to do anything. She felt the panic begin to build in her chest causing her to frantically scream, "Help him! I can't reach him and we can't lose someone else.". Channeling her frustration and fear into anger focused on the Spawn, she began yelling to get its attention. Hopefully it was intelligent enough to be distracted so that Brana or Kiergard could help Bastion.

She raised her hand again and pointed her palm at the creature. "You unholy abomination! See me and know that you are to be judged." Nadia said the divine words to call forth her fire bolt and silently prayed that it would find its mark.

spell resistance 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
ranged touch 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 = 6
damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The bolt formed and shot towards the creature but failed to penetrate its resistance. However, the light from the bolt did succeed in getting the Spawn's attention and its focus moved away from Bastion momentarily and fixed on Nadia. She swallowed hard wondering if she had just sealed her own fate.

Turn 65 is up.

I must admit that it's been a while since a combat has lasted this long.

Read the OOC.

Fortitude: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Bummer!

ic: Nadia moved backwards, trying to draw the Spawn further away from Bastion and the others. She also wanted to keep her distance in the hopes of not being grappled again. She knew she was running out of options but continued to try to penetrate the creature's defenses against her spells.

Nadia again aimed at the Spawn with her palm and recited the words to generate the fire bolt. In her gut she knew that if this didn't work they may all be done for but she forced herself to hope for the best. After all, wasn't this what grand bardic songs were about?

ooc: I believe that Nadia has 2 bolts left if I've been tracking them properly but please correct me if I'm wrong and she'll change tactics.

Spell resistance check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 3 - 2 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Nadia felt her flicker of hope being snuffed out as she watched her fire bolt extinguish upon hitting the Spawn with no damage to show for it. "Sarenrae, have mercy on your servant," she murmured as the faced the beast while surrounded by death.

Kiergard glanced to his left and saw that Brana was tending to Bastion. He whispered a quick prayer to Desna for the monk's sake and then quickly returned his focus to the Beast.

He heard Nadia taunt the abomination away from their fallen comrade and he couldn't stop himself from smiling. Surely she was a servant of Desna's as much as Sarenrae's, for in that desperate challenge that drew the beast towards her it revealed an opportunity for his blade to strike.

He unconsciously spun his sword and felt it's eagerness again tug at his fingers. He slipped it into a reverse grip and again launched himself at the foul beast. The Ulfen warrior fell into the lashing beast, his great shield cushioning his fall against its muscled back.

ON HIT: He stabbed his enchanted blade deeply in to the creatures belly and ripped it free with a horrid squelching sound. He knew Desna would favor their cause.

ON MISS: He stabbed his enchanted blade at the beast but it buckled against his weight and the swords tip scraped harmlessly against the stone floor. Had Desna forsaken him?

ACTION:
ATTACKKKK! (if any action points remain use 'em
1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 = 221d6 ⇒ 6

ooc: does Nadia need to make her fort save to stay conscious or is she unconscious regardless and the save is to stabilize? Just wondering if she's conscious to help herself :)

She is unconscious regardless but the save will stabilize her.

ooc: ok then...here goes nothing :)

Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 if no -2 for sickened
Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 - 2 = 16 if -2 applies

I can't remember if the sickened condition continues when unconscious or if it applies to this so I'm giving both scenarios :)

Is bastion still unconscious, or is he staggered?

male
Rufus "Bastion" Elanwright wrote:

Bastion is conscious but staggered (only for this next round-a house rule I forgot to mention).

Bastion groaned as he stood up. He felt awful.

"Brana..."

He was interrupted by his own heaving -- his stomach attempting to spit out contents that simply weren't there anymore. He stared at the wall for a moment, as if considering something, and turned to smile at Brana. He began walking back down the hallway towards the aberration.

ooc: ouch. I had Kiergard continue to battle the beast when Bastion fell, but with two of his group down, would he try and aid Nadia (channel or stabilize) since she's alone or should he continue to push the assault. Having a hard time deciding... suggestions?

Female Human Sorceror 5

OOC: Thanks for NPCing, yesterday was nuts around here.

IC: "Bastion, take this." she said as she tossed him a second vial (CMW) "You may need it." Brana quickly focused her mind and began to chant, calling for the power of a less powerful spell that was sure to impact the creature. Unless it's resistance to magic defeated her once again.

Magic Missile SR/DMG 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 173d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2, 1) + 3 = 10

IC2: Brana was dismayed to watch her missiles impact the creature to no effect.

OOC: Fabian, I know I've already used a Hero Point but this seems like a good time to see if you'll bend the rules to allow me to use another.

male

OK, being a softy and since this campaign is coming to an end, everyone has more 'action point' (d6), which they can apply to any d20 roll.

BTW, the Spawn only has 8 hit points left... somebody kill it! :)

ooc: I think Nadia stabilized with her roll so just kill the thing! She'd be mighty ticked if she found out you chose to heal her along with the beast rather than destroy it and save Carrion Hill

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

Kiergard stomach sank as he saw Nadia fall. "NO!" he shouted with some fury and raised his enchanted sword again. This time however, there was no question whether it was the Ulfen warrior or the sword who was in control.

Kiergard stepped forward, hitting the disgusting beast solidly with a shield and with a rapid swirl spun on his heal pulling the enchanted blade through a wicked arc to strike at the creature.

ON HIT: The keen silvery blade sliced through the beast's tentacles cleaning etching a dark line across its form with deadly precision.

ON MISS: He grunted in anger as the beast managed to stumble away from his swing and avoid injury.

1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (10) + 8 + 2 + (4) = 24 One more time using the action thingy

ooc: WOOT! Go Kiergard...where's your damage :)

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

ooc: good question. I haven't actually been rolling damage recently leaving that for Fabian. Not sure why actually...

on that note, here's Kiergard's damage roll:

+1 abberation bane longsword:1d8 + 3 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 1 + (2, 2) = 15

I've got house guests (for a while actually) so my intra-day posting will probably suffer. I should still be able to post at night, which is when this turn recap will come out.

In any case, the Spawn is no more so congrats to all!

Female Human Sorceror 5

ooc: Nicely done!

OOC: Nice, Kiergard!

ooc: I'm gonna be away with the family the next couple days with limited online access, so I may be slow to post. NPC Kiergard if needed.

Questions?

I thought Bastion was dead for sure XD

ic: Nadia felt disoriented as she regained consciousness. The last thing she remembered was extreme pain and thinking that it was the end. Now she still felt intense pain but it was far too quiet. Her eyes focused on the figure looming above her and recognized Bastion and a smile spread across her face. "You made it, praise Sarenrae."

Nadia slowly sat up and looked around. Linstrenn's body caught her eye and she scrambled over to him. Logically she knew it was too late but she had to check him for any sign of life. She sighed sadly as she confirmed her fears. She should have done more to save him and expected that his death would haunt her thoughts for the rest of her days.

"We should collect anything of Crove's that could be harmful if it fell into the wrong hands and then return to the Mayor's to update him."

tag everyone(?)

While the group discussed options, Nadia took hold of her holy symbol with great gratitude and reverence before calling on her goddess' healing.

channel energy: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3) = 11

ooc: I needed some closure :)

male

I'm OK with closure so we can continue roleplaying some more if you all want.

I'll wait for others to express themselves and we'll continue. There's some decent loot from Crove and his office...

male

But ... I'm not Ok with watching something good just linger on its death throes so either we get something going in the next 24 hours or I will end this campaign and 'fade to black'. I'm OK either way.

Bastion reveled in the soothing energy of Nadia's healing and then began searching Keeper Crove's belongings. He secretly hoped he'd find something to eat inside...

Afterwards, Bastion approached Brana and performed a nobleman's bow.
"I owe you my life, Lady Brana. I'm not sure I could ever repay you for that."

Then Linstrenn's death hit him like a ton of bricks. The half-elf was easily his favorite companion. At least he did not die in vain, Bastion thought to himself -- Carrion Hill was saved.

Female Human Sorceror 5

Brana, bracing herself against the nearest wall, smiled at Bastion's bow. "Think nothing of it. I did little to injure that creature, at least I was able to help my ... friends." As the last word rolled from her tongue, she raised an eyebrow. "Yes." She affirmed. "Friends." She smiled, it had been a long time since she had called anyone friend.

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

Kiergard let his arms fall to his side. The urgency that had so driven the his enchanted blade had ebbed as the aberration dissolved into the bubbling puddle that stained the floor. A wave of relief swepth through him as both Bastion and Nadia seemed to recover from the terrible battle, with the cleric of Saranrae then washing away many of the physical pains that had been inflicted by the creature.

But that did not remove the pain he still felt on seeing the remains of Linstrenn. THe mobile fighter was beyond any divine magic's that Nadia might possess and possibly all but the gods themselves.

He whispered a silent prayer of thanks to Desna and stood up straight and looked at his companions who had become his friends.

"This is done. Let's make sure the keeper left no others are left as bait for this creature. Then we should return to the mayor."

He paused in thought.

"What of the mayor's daughter?"

[tag all]

male

I'm wrapping this up tomorrow and I'm going to 'fade to black'.

Any other input before then?

male

Turn 68 is up.

And there it went. Game over. :(

Please read the OOC and give me (and each other) some feedback.

Thanks again!

I enjoyed the game as well.

About the only thing I found a challenge is keeping up the posting pace. I know I'm good for a 2-3 posts a week. Above that its challenging.

Having said that, I'm finding the pace is helping me to develop a little writing discipline. Where before I'd often get bogged down scrutinizing each sentence, i'm now getting better at hammering out a few paragraphs and then quickly dealing with any glaring errors. there's still plenty of errors i miss, but overall I think this has helped me writing more efficiently.

I'm sad that it's done :( I enjoyed the story and the characters. I found it a good mix of melee and story.

I agree that the pace was a little fast and at times challenging but it didn't stop me from having fun.

I'm probably in the minority but I still prefer PBEM to this hybrid format, but the hybrid format didn't inhibit my enjoyment in any manner.

Thanks everyone for a good run!
