Fabian's Carrion Hill (Inactive)

Game Master Fabian Benavente

This is a test run of a hybrid system combining the best qualities of a PBEM and PBP. The game has already started as PBEM so we'll just play the last part as a 'hybrid'.

This thread is where you would post what you previously sent through email.

By posting here and NOT the Gameplay thread, we save the Gameplay thread for posting the turn recaps thus keeping the same chapter-like read of the game with the OOC (PC status, additional info, options for roleplaying, maps, etc.) at the end of each recap.

The main (and ONLY?) advantage to this is that the player can roll their own dice. However, this is a god advantage as the player can 'preview' their dice roll and write out their results! I will be providing AC, DC, etc. so you know ahead of time what the result of your attack, saving throw, etc. is.

I, as the All-Mighty DM, reserve the right to over-rule any results based on information not known by players, etc. For example, a sorceress casting magic missile and describing the automatic hit when the monster actually had magic resistance (which was failed).

This sound good to me (Joe/Kiergard).

I've played PBP over at wizards for quite some time. FOr a number of games I've been in there, we'd use one thread for "in-game" posting and a seperate threed for OOC or discussions. If found this worked really well, with the DM providing periodic updates as needed to display mapping movement, character stats, etc..

Here that seems to translate here nicely to the game-play and discussion threads.

Bastion (Doug) reporting for duty!

Bastion watched as the horrific creature dissolved into the cavern's murky water. The threat was gone, but his heart was still pounding like a drum and he was short of breath.

"Myre... We need to..."

Bastion took a deep breath, and closed his eyes, eventually opening them feeling a bit more calm. He forced a smile and spoke.

"I'm glad we finished that beast. I'm not sure how I would feel knowing that thing was out somewhere, possibly plotting revenge against us. I'm also not sure if tentacled blobs of chaos hold grudges, but this was a necassary precaution -- at least for my sake. Sleeping at night's going to be hard enough after seeing some of things we've witnessed in this abysmal hole of a place. Let's find Myre and get out of here."

Bastion walked out the door. He frowned when he noticed the bottoms of his pants around his ankles were black and soaked with filth and his shirt torn in several places. This is going to expensive to replace... ... ...WAIT.

Bastion abruptly stopped, mid-stride.

"We should search the cave for anything of value! If they've been feeding that monster people, maybe some of their belongings are lying around in there!"

Bastion's mind trailed off, imagining the latest fashion of high-quality shoes sitting in a neat pile somewhere in that cave, untouched and flawless...

It was finally over and thankfully no one else had been affected as Kiergard had. This lightened Nadia’s mood as she no longer had to worry about seeing one of the others afflicted yet being helpless to cure them. However, even though no one else succumbed to becoming an oozing, formless shape they still looked a little worse for wear – especially Kiergard. Grasping her holy symbol in hand, Nadia called on Sarenrae’s healing to close their wounds.

Channel Energy 3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5) = 8

It was then that Bastion suggested they search the cave before leaving. Nadia shrugged in indifference to his suggestion. “If you wish to search then we should make quick work of it before we’re delayed further.” Nadia took one look at the water and decided that she really didn’t want to wade into it. “I’ll search the area here on dry land.”

When they had finished searching the area that was the chaos beast’s prison, they set out again to explore the rest of the asylum. “I vote for clearing the cells to the north before returning to the area where those patients were tied to the wall. Does anyone have any other ideas?”

It looks like you did because I don't see it. Fair warning: this site will eat your posts every so often so if you think it's taking too long to view a 'preview' or a 'submit post', quickly sweep the post and hit 'ctrl c' to save what you wrote in the 'copyboard' (?)

Kiergard watched with grim satisfaction as the tentacled creature dissolved into the water. "Good. It is done." The warrior left the water and cleansed his blade an armor of the filth from battle. He stood silently and watched as Bastion scoured the area for spoils. He wanted none of it. He wanted Myre.

>>REF(NADIA):"I vote for clearing the cells to the north before returning to the area where those patients were tied to the wall. Does anyone have any other ideas?"

Kiergard simply nodded to Nadia and strode in the direction she suggested.

ooc: we're after Keeper Crove - we already dealt with Myre

male

I'll wait for Steve (Brana) and then I'll recap.

Game on!

Female Human Sorceror 5

Brana grunted her agreement with Nadia's plan. "Letting that beast live would have been a grave error." She said aloud. Once Bastion and the others finished searching the area, she followed the group towareds the cells to the north. "Kiergard, I fear we face greater challenges ahead. I would feel most indebted to you if you would accept this belt now."

tag: Kiergard

male

I'm waiting on Joe (Kiergard). if he doesn't answer in the next few hours, I'll assume he rejects the belt.

ooc: sorry guys. tied up abit. was this a belt of dex? with kiergard's armor and shield he has limited ability to benefit from it (max dex limitation on armor)

Search check:

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

The turn is up. Just curious, how are you finding out about this?

Did you know that you could set up your campaign page where it will tell you when any new activity has occurred in any of your campaigns?

Male Halfling 5th Level Human Resources Adept/1st Level Warrior

I check it once or twice a day. Shari seems to be the only 'member' of the campaign. Though I'll admit I'm not sure if I have to join the campaign or if you have to add me.

Oh and I bet I know why that is. She said she posted in the Gameplay thread by mistake and then deleted it.

So why don't you all do the same. Post and then delete. I'll bet that will add you as a player and then your Paizo homepage could be your 'campaigns' tab which will tell you when something new has been posted to whatever campaign you belong to.

Tell me if that works

yup.. that seemed to work. Kiergard's now a character and I can see it on my home page as a campaign

ooc: Fabian is there any way to get past the lunatics? I think one of the other turns mentioned there was a door in the corner or something?

male
Nadia Hildebrant wrote:

ooc: No, not if you want to go through the north door in the 'living room' (only place not explored in this level).

Female Human Sorceror 5

ooc: Yep, Posting and deleting worked. Good call.

ic: "What are we to do with the residents of the Asylumn in the north corridor? She asked.

Bastion replied, "I could knock them out but I fear Myre is so accustomed to their noise making that silencing them may actually prove detrimental."

Bastion wrote:

Nadia added her opinion, "From the sounds of their taunts I don't think they're just going to let us get by them without a fight. I personally would prefer them unconscious to having to hurt them in another manner."

Kiergard grunted in response to Nadia's comment and nodded his head in agreement. He had no desire to injure the mindless inmates but suspected that they might have little choice in the matter. Assuming the matter settled, he strode forward towards the as yet unexplored area and readied his blade to strike with its flat side should any of the deranged men attack.

male

ooc; Guys if the consensus is to attack, just let me know and I'll write it up as these chained lunatics will be no match for the party.

Just give me a couple of guidelines like Kiergard did and I'll take care of the rest.

Bastion did not agree, but moved forward to engage the lunatics using nonlethal force, alongside Kiergard. He shuddered at the thought of being bitten by one of the lunatics and furrowed his brow, eager to end the engagement as quickly and painless as possible.

ooc: I'll be away from the keyboard till late monday. NPC kiergard as needed.

male

I'll likely recap today, definitely no later than tomorrow...

This may sound superficial, but I like the paizo board because it is more aesthetically pleasing than my emailing.

male

As long as I have a 'turn recap' (with all the good that entails) I can play in any medium so yeah, this is working out OK.

Female Human Sorceror 5

ic: Brana followed the two warriors, loading her crossbow as they moved up the hallway. "I doubt this will be necessary." She said to no one in particular as she placed a bolt into the crossbow.

ooc: I like the boards for PBeM use as well.

Nadia followed Kiergard and Bastion while keeping an eye on the three lunatics to see if they would engage them. Heading for the northern opening Nadia had no idea what to expect but had her scimitar in hand just in case.

ooc: Nadia won't touch the chained lunatics unless they make the first move in which case she'll use non-lethal force. I'm liking the new format as well - I just have to remember to check the website because there is nothing reminding me to do so.

ooc: is Keeper Crove doing anything when we enter or is he just hanging out?

ooc: if it's obvious that combat is going to start immediately then Nadia will cast Protection from Evil, communal on the group but she'll want to wait until combat starts because it is a timed spell. Since she needs to split up the time between the group, I'm tempted to omit Linstrenn because he's now an npc but I guess that doesn't really make sense. She'll also omit herself because she can cast a separate spell on herself so that everyone else gets longer time.

Let me know if we're rolling initiative and I'll write up the spell cast.

ooc: Well, he sort of surprised at finding you; he was expecting something else but he will recover quickly.

male
Nadia Hildebrant wrote:

Go ahead and roll your own initiatives since we don't wait to post in initiative order.

Here's Crove's initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 3

Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Bastion dashed across the room and sprinted down the hallway, hurling his mammoth weight toward the Keeper in a reckless shoulder charge.

Punishing Kick: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 231d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Female Human Sorceror 5

Initiative = 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Brana, seemingly as surprised as Crove himself, quickly lifted her crossbow with both hands to steady her shot, aimed and fired at him.

Attack and Damage rolls 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 141d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

hit: Crove raised an arm in time to block the bolt, though it still managed to embed itself in his forearm. With a shriek of rage and pain, he pulled the bolt out and threw it to the floor.

miss: Brana stared wide-eyed as Crove managed to swat the bolt away before it was able to penetrate his flesh. It rattled as it impacted the wall to Crove's right.

Brana dropped her crossbow and mentally prepared to cast a spell on her next opportunity.

Initiative 1d20 ⇒ 11

Nadia did not expect to come upon Crove so suddenly but immediately recognized the need to the group to have protection against whatever nefarious plans he may reveal.

Calling on Sarenrae's protection Nadia spoke in a commanding voice, "Sarenrae! Protect body, soul, and mind from harm. Keep evil from all." As she spoke, Nadia's hand began to vibrate with energy and she squeezed the forearm of each one in the group to transfer her deity's protection.

ooc: Nadia will cast Protection from evil, communal on the group.

male

I'll give Joe until tomorrow to post.

Female Human Alchemist-2

ooc: sorry about the spell list...can you send me the list you have? I'm thinking I thought I had updated it awhile back but mine is obviously different from yours so I probably never sent it :)

ooc: sorry, wrong character for that last post...

male

OK, I got your list and the spells you cast appear on both lists so we can go with yours and say that you DID cast communal protection from evil.

So you all get a +2 on the saving throws.

ooc: got back later from a long weekend away than intended. thanks for npc'ing Kiergard. will post something this evening.

Stinking Cloud Fort save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Bastion almost lost his lunch as the foul odor entered his nostrils and seemed to tear a dry heave from down below. He remained focused, however, and continued after Crove.

He brought back his arm for a massive strike, clenching his hand into a fist only moments before impact...

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 171d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

...and his forward momentum carried his fist through open air. Bastion cursed. Crove was much faster than he anticipated.

ooc: Nadia excluded herself from protection communal spell to give everyone else a little more time considering she can cast it just on herself afterwards. Does the protection spell also increase their ACs by 2?

Stinking cloud Fort save 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

ic: Nadia doubled over as the stench overwhelmed her. She gagged and lost what little stomach contents she had onto the floor. Recognizing the need to exit the area, Nadia made her way towards Crove as quickly as her legs and stomach would allow.

ooc: Nadia will move out of the cloud and will remain nauseated for...

1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 rounds

Actually, you must break up the spell in 1 minute interval so the 5 of you will get it for 1 minute.

Everyone AC is also increased by 2. Everyone's saving throw also gets a +2 but it wouldn't have worked in your case anyways.

Game on!

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

Fortitude Save (1d20+10+2=18).. woo hoo. just! All hail Nadia!

Chocking vapours quickly surrounded Kiergard. They stung his eyes and inflamed his lungs. It was but by the grace of Nadia's magical protection that the northern warrior was able to resist the worst effects of the keeper's magical attack.

Infuriated, Kiergard screamed with raw fury that would shake many men. He launched himself forward as his powerful legs pounded loudly against the stone floor. Though his sword was raised, he did not use it. Instead he raised his mighty shield and bowled into the caster.

[action: use OVERRUN to move through the keeper and setup flanking opportunities with bastion.

NOTE: Kiergard has improved overrun, preventing the keeper from avoiding the Overrun attack, preventing AoO's and adding +2 to his manouver.

SUCCESS: Kiergard's shield struck Crove with a bone crunching thud, sending the caster to the floor. Kiergard easily danced over his fallen form, reading to strike with his sword.

FAILURE: Though Kiergard's shield struck Crove with a loud thud, the vile man had readied himself and managed to stay on his feet, blocking the Ulfen's path.

Hey Joe,

We switched here because it had a dice roller. See below 'How to format text'.

Crove's CMD is 12 so go ahead and try out the dice roller; maybe you'll knock him prone.
