Game Master Fabian Benavente

This is a test run of a hybrid system combining the best qualities of a PBEM and PBP. The game has already started as PBEM so we'll just play the last part as a 'hybrid'.

I'm glad you are interested! I will post recruitment later in the month of June. Selection will be based on the typical big four (appearance, background, personality, and pic) but people I have gamed with in the past are heavy favorites. [winks] :)

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

ooc: its a busy day for me so I won't have turn 60 up till late tonight.

male

Thanks for letting us know; hopefully we'll have Bastion's and Brana's input by then as well.

Game on!

I've always wanted to play a nautical campaign! I'll have a post up later today. Helping the gf move.

Okay, I'm back. Fabian, is there any way I can join in the melee? Perhaps some readied action/5-foot-step shenanigans with Kiergard?

Edit: could he attack, 5 foot step to my square (we share it for a moment), and then I move to the vacant spot on my turn for an attack? I don't mean to bog the game down with too many rules questions but a full attack could make a difference here.

male

Options are:

a) to tumble through the opponent and set up a flank;
b) have Kiergard attack then 5' steps to change sides and have Bastion attack;
c) or 5' step into Linstrenn's space since he's been tossed around by the tentacle.

I'm not sure option b) is legal but we'll go with it.

Bastion still felt weakened from the creature's smell. At this point it he was pretty sure he had forgotten what normal air smelled like. However, he felt a small surge of triumph as Crove crumpled in the Spawn's fiendish grip.

At least we got to him first...

Bastion did his best to endure the pain and tumbled forward, dodging a surprisingly lightning-quick tentacle. It came down with a meaty slap, the stone cracking beneath it. Bastion recovered his fighting stance and closed in for a Ki-enhanced triple roundhouse kick.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 211d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 221d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 151d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Bastion's mouth hung agape as the spawn hardly seemed fazed by his attack. He looked up at Linstrenn, fighting for his life above and fear crawled over him like a swarm of spiders.

ooc: Is the Spawn's touch AC different from its AC? and does it have spell resistance? Would Nadia be able to determine spell resistance with a knowledge check?

It's touch AC is only 11 but it has spell resistance (20); see Brana's post above.

BTW, I since learned that there is a feat for 'swap places'; it's called friendly switch and there's a teamwork feat as well (forgot name) so we'll handle this way for subsequent rounds.

Good job spotting that one. It seemed a bit too good to be true anyways xD. Just count me as in Linstrenn's former square while he dangles above me.

Female Human Sorceror 5

ic: Still sickened by the stink of the monster, Brana felt no regrets about killing Crove - it was to the benefit of others to do so. If the creature had killed him, his lifeforce would have made a tough creature that much tougher. The sorceress called on another spell, hoping against hope that she would be able to damage the creature. When her spell was finished, she pointed her hand at the creature and a stream of acid rushed forward and impacted the Spawn.

Acid Arrow (SR Check/Ranged Touch Attack/Damage 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 192d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6)

OOC: Ugh. I can't get a decent SR roll to save my life here...

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

Kiergard grimaced as the keepers dead body was smashed against the walls. He resolve only hardened. This aberration must be destroyed.

He adjusted his shield to let Bastion slipped in beneath the Linstrenn's struggling form. The warrior knew they all needed to focus their strengths on defeating this beast. He lunged forward, holding on to his enchanted blade as it eagerly sought the skin of the beast.

ON HIT: Again the weapon slide home generating a screech of pain from the tentacled horror.

ON MISS: Kiergard pulled back his blade just in time as the vile beast used Linstrenn as a shield against the threatened strike.

ACTIONS:
Standard: Attack with Sword (just remembered to include +2 for aberration bane on the attack roll)
1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 2 = 19

male

Thanks everyone for posting but I'll write this up tomorrow morning.

Questions?

Game on!

ooc: Oh sure, pick on the useless cleric :)

"Lady Nadia!"

Bastion shook off the panic and closed in for another set of attacks. Whether or not they would do any good, he had to try. The Spawn had to yield eventually, or else...
He couldn't think that way. He had to give it everything.

The monk shaped his hands into a sharp points and with the assistance of stolen ki (from the lunatics), he unleashed three blisteringly fast stabs.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 211d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 131d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 201d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

But to no avail. He just couldn't penetrate the beast's thick hide. Bastion braced himself for the Spawn's retribution.

ooc: Fabian, how many action points does Nadia have left? How would that work in using one to get past the spell resistance - does she just get another roll?

male

Bastion, not that it mattered in the past because you were still short by 1 but I have you hitting at +9 (3 bab +4 str + 1 weapon focus + 1 mighty fists).

Everyone: maybe now is a good time to remember that you all have the 'action points' which adds 1d6 to any d20 roll, which unfortunately they are usable once per encounter but it's something.

Bastion, feel free to retroactively use them for this round if you wish. if you use it on that first attack, you would only need a 2 on 1d6 to hit...

BTW, big bad boy here is immune to cold and fire.

The useless cleric still has like 4 channel energies left...

Hard to predict but this fight will be close.

Game on!

male

Oops, we just crossed posts regarding the action points.

The action point is an additional 1d6 to any d20 roll.

So with both you and Brana's case, it would be d20+5(caster level)+1d6(if using action point which must be equal to or higher than 20.

Question?

ooc: Does the sickened state affect the spell resistance check?

Does this thing count for using channel energy to hurt it? I thought that only worked against undead...

male
Nadia Hildebrant wrote:

The sickened conditions does NOT affect the caster level check.

BTW, the stench (cause of sickened) is a poison so anything that works for poison works here as well.

The aberration is living and heals with positive energy (like the burst you did last round) but healing 5 friends and 1 foe seems like a good compromise.

I was trying to figure out why you guys entered combat not fully healed. Was it because you didn't want to heal Crove or just an oversight?

Ohhhh, I forgot about the amulet. I was using my character's statistics from this site rather than from the pbem xD. I'll use my action point next round just for the sake of drama.

I didn't know anyone had any healing left after that Chaos Beast, so I figured we were going in with no safety net.

This guy is gnarly. I shudder to think about how strong he'd be if he got to Crove.

ooc: I thought they could only be healed if they were 'good', not just living. Don't they have to be within a certain alignment of the healer? I could be completely wrong...its been known to happen :)

male

As a 'good' cleric, you can channel positive energy to either a) heal all living creatures or b) harm undead (your choice).

It affects everyone in a 30' unless you have feats like selective channeling.

I hope you guys appreciate the DM having the spawn flail Crove about (and thus 'wasting' an attack). I figured 3 tentacles and a bite is plenty. Besides, I like the image of Crove's skin and blood decorating the asylum's walls. :)

Game on!

ooc: Sigh...sorry guys :( I didn't mean to heal the monster.

The lack of healing was kind of an oversight but at the same time I tend to heal people when they really need it and at the time no one was below 50% hp

ooc: one last question...you said that the thing had fire resistance. Does this include divine fire as well or just mundane fire?

I think flamestrike will do only half(the divine part) of its damage

ooc: I don't have flame strike yet but Nadia's fire bolt says that it's divine fire whereas the burning hands is regular fire. I was just hoping that it would work even if only half damage.

male
Nadia Hildebrant wrote:

I would say that divine fire works just fine.

Female Human Sorceror 5

IC: Brana Cursed, her magic rarely failed her and the fact this creature was more powerful than anything she had ever seen didn't lessen her rage. Staying out of reach of the tentacles, still overwhelmed by the stench, she started her chanting and somantic requirements for a spell. She raised her hand toward the creature and a plume of acid once again crossed the distance between her and the tentacled mass of chaos attacking her friends.

Acid Arrow (SR Check/Ranged Touch Attack/Damage 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 112d4 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7)

OOC: Didn't use the Action Point this round, figured I was due for a good roll. Guess not...

ic: Nadia stared at the numerous small mouths that were biting at her while being suspended mid-air and squeezed. It was then that she did what she always did when circumstances seemed dire - she cried out to Sarenrae. Nadia grabbed the tentacle that was grappling her with both hands and shouted, "Sarenrae penetrate this creature's defenses and judge it with your divine flame!"

ooc: Nadia will use an action point for spell resistance check and then cast fire bolt

spell resistance check 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (9) + 5 + (3) = 17
ranged touch attack 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 2 = 2
damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

ooc: Oh for pity's sake!

ic: But alas Nadia's words were for naught and she continued to have the life squeezed out of her.

Turn 62 is up.

Questions?

Game on!

I know its the weekend but let's see if we can complete one round during these two days.

Female Human Sorceror 5

IC: Brana wished she could get to Nadia to check her wounds and give her one of the healing potions she had remaining. She hope the cleric would step out of the fray and heal herself before she was snatched up by the creature again. Holding her position, Brana prayed to Gozreh as she cast the same spell one more time. (SR w/Action Point-Ranged Touch Attack-Damage Roll 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (13) + 5 + (5) = 231d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 202d4 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3)

The creature wailed in pain as the acid finally did some damage, Brana grinned even though she knew it was minimal. At least she had finally managed to hurt the beast.

ic: Nadia scrambled backwards from the Spawn. She knew she needed some healing and from the looks of Linstrenn - he did too. She retrieved one of her cure light wounds potions and placed it in Linstrenn's hand. She left it up to him as to what he'd do with it or when. For herself she chose to cast a healing spell on herself which was why she moved backwards. Murmuring the divine words to Sarenrae to unleash her goddess' healing, Nadia touched the area where she had been bitten by the Spawn and allowed the healing power to flow through her body.

ooc: Nadia will spontaneously cast cure serious wounds on herself

Healing 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (2, 4, 5) + 5 = 16

Being heaved into the air and thrown around was just too much for the monk's already upset stomach. He lost his lunch on the way up and struggled to breathe as the tentacle squeezed around him with its vice grip. He channeled more of his inner power to try to sever the tentacle and free himself with brute force.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 151d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 141d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 211d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

But the Spawn had him right where it wanted and wasn't letting go anytime soon. If things went this way much longer, Bastion would succumb to the grisly fate he knew awaited him.

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

ooc: thanks for npc'ing Kiergard!

Kiergard grunted with exertion. He knew their attacks were hurting the creature, but would they finish it off before one of them fell to the aberration?

Again the Ulfen warrior blocked the incessantly grasping tentacles with his massive shield. Seeing an opening he thrust his enchanted blade into the writhing mass of horror before him.

ON HIT: His strike was greeted by another howl of pain and rage from the beast.

ON MISS: This time the tentacles twisted about his blade, neutralizing its thrust. He pulled with all his might to free his arm and sword from the vile creature.

ACTIONS:
Keep swinging!
1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 8 + 2 = 26

ooc: hey, how do these action points work. can I use them to deal extra damage on a hit?

male
Grawln wrote:

No, you can't. You can use it to affect any d20 roll by 1d6.

Wow, and that's everyone. I'm going out to dinner with the family but will send out another turn tomorrow morning.

Game on!

Turn 63 is up.

I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel but probably not all PCs will get to it.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 7 + (5) = 171d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Use Action Point
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Bastion continued fighting for his life, hoping he could end the creature before it ended him. The Spawn roared in defiance as Bastion performed a rather ineffective haymaker. The beast's hide was too thick and it absorbed the blow easily. Bastion cursed himself for attempting such a reckless maneuver in the face of danger.

ic: Nadia could no longer see Bastion and she hoped that either he or someone else had a healing potion for him considering she couldn't get to him. Her bigger concern was Linstrenn who had gone limp in the Spawn's grasp but she couldn't reach him either since he was being dangled above. She knew that Sarenrae's provision would allow her to help him if she could reach him but first she had to get the monster to drop him. She raised her palm and hoped that this time her fire bolt would be able to penetrate the creature's natural resistance.

spell resistance check 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
fire bolt 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 - 2 = 21 is she considered to be flanking the monster?
damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

ooc: can she critical with her spell?

ic: An extremely powerful blast exploded from Nadia's palm and hit the monster square in the face. She actually took a step back as there was recoil from the amount of divine power that emitted from her hand. Nadia smiled and said, "My eternal gratitude to you, Sarenrae."

ooc: Finally!

male
Nadia Hildebrant wrote:

Did you just roll two 20s in a row?

Wow, my hat off to you. :)

Yes, you can crit on spells (it's usually 20/x2) so I would say yes to your bolt so roll another damage round.

ooc: maybe I guilted or shamed the dice roller and it felt bad? Whatever the reason, I'll take the two 20s :)

Confirm critical 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 2 = 19
Extra damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Male Human Fighter / Cleric

Kiergard cursed as another tentacle struck his head. The beast was weakened but Linstrenn appeared to have lost consciousness. For a moment the warrior considered calling on Desna's healing grace but he knew the monster would benefit from it as well.

"No. Use the sword." he mumbled to himself.

And his blade obliged. Kiergard had difficulty holding the sword's pummel as it vibrated with excitement, sensing the aberration's imminent demise. Even covered by the beast's sickly ichor, the blade still shone with a flashing intensity. Sensing an opening, Kiergard lunged forward, and with an unexpected eagerness his sword nearly pulling the massive Ulfen into the writhing mess of tentacles.

ON HIT: He pulled the sword free with an explosion of gore, painting his armor with a gruesome sheen.

ON MISS: The warrior couldn't control the violent pull of his enchanted weapon and the blade missed its mark.

ACTIONS:
Attack w/sword, spend action point 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 2 + (2) = 13

Female Human Sorceror 5

IC: Brana gasped in horror as she watched Linstrenn go limp in the creature's grasp. "Linstrenn is unconscious!" she screamed. Determination crossed her face as she began her, now well-practiced, somantic and verbal portions of her spell. The plume of acid headed toward the beast.

SR/ATK/DMG1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 171d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 52d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6

The acid plume harmlessly impacted the ceiling above the beast.

(residual damage from last round's attack 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6)

There are basically two ways to move an opponents square: Overrun and tumbling.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Moving-Through-a-Square

ooc: I'm pretty sure that Tumbling is out for Nadia...no one wants to see that awkwardness :) Does she have any chance at all of beating the Spawn's CMD? Is it only considered one size greater than her or is it bigger in which case she wouldn't be able to anyways...
