OK, guys and gals, it’s pretty clear already that following the wilderness exploration RAW is going to be a horrible bore. Here’s the new plan:
1. Declare your route intentions, same as before. Except, I need to know how far you plan to travel each day so that I know what checks I need for things like a forced march. So, the new format would be “NW, SW, rest, NW, SW, rest” or something like that. The rates of travel are in the spoiler below.
2. If you are travelling on mapped hexes, no chance of getting lost. If you are travelling on new hexes, 1 survival roll per 5 hexes travelled.
3. If you fail the survival roll, you will not be able map your travels and I won’t update the Obsidian Portal map. I will roll to determine how lost you get, and you will automatically realize that you are lost at that point.
4. From there, you will make another survival roll to determine how quickly you make it back to mapped territory.
Sound simple enough?
I reworked my random encounter tables to mesh better with this system. Basically, there is 2/3 chance to encounter something (not necessarily combat) if you explore a hex, and a 1/6 chance to encounter something if you pass through a hex.
We will no longer track night watch shifts, assuming that your party works it out to get enough sleep for everyone. If the random encounter occurs during the night, I will apply it from there.
We will also not keep as close an eye on food. Just keep track of how many days of food you have for your entire party. If you are about to run out, then you will make a survival roll to determine if and how much food you can find. You can also feel free to scrounge up food from encounters as appropriate.
So, to get up to speed, here what I need from you:
No more getting lost check until you venture into unmapped territory.
How many days worth of food you have for your party.
The first column shows your slowest party member’s walking speed. The next columns shows how long it takes to pass through grassland or other hex, respectively. The lowest row shows how long it takes to fully explore a hex, regardless of walking speed.
Rate Grassland All other

I apologize for changing things up so abruptly, but I'm already tired of the perpetual stream of survival rolls. I'm totally up for more suggestions, too.

Looks fine to me. Seems kind of a low chance to find something that may be in a hex, though. To me that would be what the perception checks would be for, or at least more like an 80% chance instead of only 66.6%. Otherwise why bother spending a whole day exploring a hex if you're not guaranteed to find anything?
If you have access to the Kingmaker book 1, it has some very detailed information about hex-ploration.

The GM seems to be playing it pretty close to the original West Marches, based on his statements regarding the game. I trust him when he says we'd probably die. If we go without a third, we'd probably have to be running for our lives at least once during our trek, but sometimes that can be fun. One of my most memorable moments was with a character similar to the one I'm playing now.
However, the nature of the game is to get more people involved, and I can't imagine that we'd be the last two to want to play. If we left without more people, that's two less people who get to play (at least, immediately so), and I'd hate for that to happen. My vote is to wait for another.

I love the feel of hand-drawn stuff, if that makes any difference. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner.
Also, I'm not paying for an Obsidian Portal membership, so I can only have one map. We'll have to add maps as images in the actual articles, which I don't think is really any worse than having them under the map header.

Dear Good Team,
We are assembling an army in the wilderness to destroy everything you love and remake it in our image. F*ck the bounty.
Love,
Fuzzy-wuzzy Evil Guys
PS: We also know where the bounty is.
Obviously all perceived competition is in-character. I wish you guys the best of luck. Whoever gets it, gets it. I'm having a blast no matter what. Great game so far GM_Jacob.

Goblins are HARDLY an army...
Good guy Chuffy > all your goblins! I may need to take that level of ranger faster than I thought to take Favored Enemy (Goblin)...!
But really, don't hurt the forest. I don't want to have to burn down your new fort :( From what I can tell of Finn and Chuffy the convo would go down something like this:
Tensen: "Guys we should burn down the evils teams new base - they're logging the whole wilderness to build it!"
Chuffy + Finn: "BURNINATE THE COUNTRYSIIIIIIIIIIDE!" followed by many high fives and cheering.
What kind of company have I chosen ._.
And yes, all rivalry is completely in character! And quite fun haha

Dear Evil and Good teams,
I have no idea what's going on, but I crushed a guy's face with a giant sword and it was awesome.
Sincerely, Ira
Seriously, I'm not even sure what her motives are right now. She may be driven purely by bloodlust, or maybe shyness... I completely forgot to write up backstory or personality before we started, so I'm just going to see what happens. I'm not sure she should be on the good team though :D

Tensen Wildmane |

Well, you certainly can't let any information gained from peeking affect character decisions, that's just poor form.
^This. I just enjoy seeing what everybody is up to. Metagaming can kill a game.
And Rosa.. The good guys have no agenda. And I do us injustice by calling us the good-guys. I think 4/5 of us are Neutral lol.

Aaron Callforth |

Aaron, I just wanted to let you know that we will not be chasing the bounty. From your character's internal thoughts, it seemed that you thought we would be, so I wanted to clarify.
Yep, got that. Somehow left a line out of the reply saying that he was so excited about the new adventure that he did not pay close attention the the words that were being said.

Gaius Vekkhar |

Ooh, that's you is it Tensen? I was thinking about throwing my hat in with an Inquisitor or Ranger but it seemed like you already had a lot of interest. Also still waiting to hear about the Kirthfinder game that is recruiting. But that's going slow... Let me know if you get desperate. I can whip something up to order basically. I enjoy playing anything at this point.

Gaius Vekkhar |

You may run into some of us? Or the results of our passage? There are currently 9 PCs stomping about in the wilderness, although it will soon be 8. As a sandbox world, whatever we do will change it, and we're supposed to be providing our own motivations and missions for the most part. Jackson wants to explore EVERYTHING, so if you go with him that's probably what you'll end up doing.
PS:Is it just me or does Jackson have the voice of Sean Connery?

Gaius Vekkhar |

We aint gun' start no sh*t. Just stay outta the way and you can be good alls you want. We want to make the wilderness safe too, by turning it into industry and conquering everything. It just needs a little organization is all, some order. Nothing evil about that. :P

Jackson Fox |

Sean Connery is not what I was going for, but it's perhaps better, especially since he was Henry Jones, Sr. and I'm definitely going for a certain Indiana Jones flavor, with maybe a bit of Han Solo mixed in. I'll spoiler it so that it doesn't ruin the Sean Connery thing for you, but the voice I was going for is based on

Jackson Fox |

Because, as far as I know, we're not. It's my understanding, in-character, that the X is not where they went. In-character, it's my understanding that, according to the bartender, the X leads to a gully with rooms in the walls, where long ago some crazy people had a lab. I haven't read the other threads, and I've only read what I would know as a character. I'd suggest that others do the same; the meta-game can make or break a game like this, and I don't want to ruin it for myself. It's not my intention to lecture or chastise, merely a friendly suggestion.

GM_Jacob |

I appreciate the effort, Jackson. I agree completely that meta-gaming will ruin this for whoever does it. What's the fun in adventuring if you know what's there? And besides, even if you go to the same place as the rest of them, you never know what they might have missed - or what else may have moved in...
