Evelyn calls on her magic, washing away the worldly hurts of her companions before slipping into her bedroll and well deserved sleep.

The group awakens under the same star-filled sky as when they initially began their slumber, the points of light like fireflies stuck in amber, forever and unchanging.

Only the fire is different, now burned down to warm coals, the smell of woodsmoke all but gone in the warm breezes that sweep the butte and rustle the thin, needle-like leaves of the yucca tree.

Talon rose to a seated position and glanced at Amelia. Fresh feathers had grown to replace those lost in the acidic slime left behind by the turtles passing, stark white against thier dark brothers, the effect striking. "This place? Is it a memory? Is it a dream? What meaning does it hold for you?"

The morning having come, Maitreya arose and stretched his limbs. He then stood stock still, and to any observer seemed motionless, save for the occasional quiver of a muscle here or there. In fact, each muscle of his body tensed and released, a system of exercise not as valuable perhaps as the regular katas Maitreya practiced, but better suited to the smaller quarters Amelia had provided. And, Maitreya thought wryly, less of a show-off this way too.

Exercises complete, and while the others finished a morning repast, Maitreya bowed to the others,

Allow me to scout below, and insure it is safe before the rest of you depart.

And then, with a backstep, he fell from view.

Our family need never leave us if their memory holds true. Is it not custom in these lands to lay the mortal coil to rest in the ground, or beneath stones? I have never seen one carry so physical a reminder of one living before.

...

Brand shut his eyes against a single tear that ran freely down his cheek.

But what if you never got to make any memories?

He turned and kicked at the grass as he moved away.

Maitreya hurtled towards the boulders below and then reached out with a lightning quick gesture towards the rope, turning his fall into a spinning twist that bled speed.

He snapped his weight forward and flipped through the air, landing softly on a thick blanket of moss.

The eel boat remained where he had secured it, all but invisible beneath a blind of swamp grass and reeds. The patch repaired by Brand stood out from the algae stained remainder of the craft, the wood still shiny and smooth, not yet tempered by weather and water.

Nearby, a white-winged stork perched on one slender leg, regarding him impassively.

Frogs, startled at Maitreya's sudden appearance, splashed into the swamp like skipped stones.

Maitreya regarded the crane for a short time. A good omen. he muttered to himself, remembering all the the crane was said to have taught his order.

All being calm Maitreya began to clear the camouflage from the boat, and make it ready for the others.

Maitreya soon has the eel boat uncovered and ready for travel once more.

One by one, the companions descended from Amelia's pocket realm and resumed their places in the watercraft.

Maitreya hefted the boat pole and pushed the craft free of the its moorings alongside the boulders, feeling the gentle flow of the Lady's Walk current swing the craft's prow about.

Brand sat there, as he had yesterday, his eyes full of wonder at the weatery world slipping by with each repeated shove the aasimar made.

As the morning slipped towards midday, the waterway widened, splitting and then splitting again as other streams cut the swamp into a thousand willow-topped islands. The pinks of lady slippers, the whites of water lilies, and the browns of bullrushes formed a colorful tapestry as the group traveled.

Finally, just after the noon meal, the thinning tamarack and bracken gave way to flats where the eel boat rasped to a halt as the waters grew more shallow, sliding to a stop on the edge of a broad expanse of flooded mud and reeds.

Just beyond the vegetation, the group could see the crystaline waters of a wide mountain lake.

Hemmed in by the lofty slopes of the Old crytolis Mountains and jagged cliffs of granite and shale, the lake reflected the lazy clouds above with perfect clarity.

A loon called, somewhere out on the lake...a mournful noise.

Amelia closed her eyes and was silent for a long moment. When she opened her eyes they were black. Suddenly a dozen tiny black birds shot from her body and scattered into the air in a flurry of activity.

"My little birds will tell us if anything is about" she said with a tiny smile as she slumped back in her invisible throne.

Amelia:
The magical birds soon return to Amelia in a flutter of black feathers, each replaying their flight in her mind's eye. She sees many things, struggling to separate the mundane from the noteworthy.

Four items stood out:

Not far to the northwest, a spire of black iron stood, covered in angular runes she thought to be some form of draconic script.

A small group of marsh giants moves through the Mudwater Swamp to the southeast, one carrying a human in plate armor slumped over one shoulder.

Out on the lake itself, the birds spied a huge explosion of water as a flipper the size of a ships sail erupted from the water for a moment before disappearing once more into the depths.

And further to the northwest, almost to the utter edge of the birds flight, a flooded forest came into view, one whose trees have turned to stone like so many temple columns. A causeway of fitted stone wound its way among the petrified trees, still more or less intact despite the roads obvious great age.

Very cool visual

Amelia absorbed the information in a flood of images. She stood for a long moment with her eyes closed as she processed it all. Finally she opened her eyes and regarded her companions.

" Well, this is interesting. I saw no marks of the king in yellow at all. There is an iron spire with draconic markings, a giant monster in the lake, a petrified forest, but no markings. Oh. And some marsh giants have captured a knight and plan to feast on his flesh. I think we should investigate the tower. It seems quite interesting"

Working with heroes again. right. of course.

"well, I must let you know that one does not simply wander through this terrain. If you wish to pursue the giants you will need conveyance"

Taking a reed from the ground she proceeded to sketch symbols in the mud. After a few minutes she stepped back and grasped the amulet at her throat. A mist rose and swirled around the symbols. moving and whorling it soon coalesced into the forms of a team of sturdy white draught horses attached to a similarly white carriage with a black snowflake stylized on the side. Both the wheels of the carriage and the horse's hooves seemed to fade into translucent mist before they touched the ground. Casually floating forward into the carriage, Amelia looked back at the group.

"Evelyn, if you would care to join me" and then looking at the others
" If you please.' she gestured at the empty drivers seat and settled in to the lush cushions of the open carriage
" The giants are southeast"

Evelyn and Marsh Giant Theology:
Marsh giants are creatures of brutality snd raw appetite, holding to the ancient credo of might makes right and that feasting on ones enemies makes one stronger. They worship foul powers, most commonly Sharak-Rhee, whom they call The Breaker of All, and Vaar, whom the refer to as The Hunger.

Evelyn and the Spires:
Eveyln remembers stories of these spires, stories that refer to them as somehow increasing storm activity in the areas where they stand. And dragons. Something about dragons.....

Amelia you have the most amazing things you know that? Now in regards to the giants. Do you think it better to try and lure some away before we save the knight? Or just frontal assault?

He hopped into the carriage and leaned back on the cushioned seats. He sank into the soft interior and let out a deep breath.

We should definitely travel this way more often! Oh before i forget..

Talon climbed aboard the mist-wrought vehicle and clacked his bill in approval. "The Mother of Breezes looks upon you with favor."

Amelia lifted one sculpted eyebrow and the horses surged forward, racing back into the swamp at a rapid pace.

They slowed as the water deepened, fans of spray rooster-tailed from each wheel as the horses pulled mightily.

No more than a handful of minutes at the horses pace brought them within sight of the brutes, half again as tall as a tall man and many times heavier.

Black eyes peered from bulbous faces, as the horse and cart thundered towards the oversized trio.

They looked stupidly from one to the other as it drew near.

"Oi! 'orses! Ya knows wut dat means donn'a?" one rumbled.

An ugly grin of shark-like teeth spread over another giant's face. He dropped the armored human he was carrying over one shoulder into the mud and hefted a massive club studded with crocodile teeth.

"I does!" he replied. "Seconds!"

There is no surprise round. Charging through the swamp in a white carraige with white horses is far from inconspicuous. The carraige moves at a speed of 40 in the difficult terrain of the waist deep swamp water.
Amelia decides how far away to stop the carraige (maximum 120 feet away for perception purposes).
Regular initiative then follows. You do not have the advantage on the giants.

As Amelia shot upward, Maitreya nodded at her request.

"Indeed I shall," he said. After all, the carriage represented the biggest meal to the Giants, and he was sure one would certainly come to him.

Waiting for the giants to charge for the horses, Maitreya breathed in deeply, feeling the moisture on the air, and the cool chill as it gripped his skin. The giants had already bellowed out with their desire to devour his allies - if only some form of peace were possible.

As Maitreya exhaled his eyes began to glow. A shimmering ring of light emanating from his head acting as beacon to his foes, and perhaps a warning as well. Mastery stood resolute amongst the effulgence, ready to fight as needed.

The halo is a beacon (as well as an ability activated at will), but also an attempt at intimidation. Mastery hopes that the intensity of his resolve, aided by the light of divine purpose may give the gints case to pause.

Sadly, only Amelia knows where the giants were, and, that, only as of several minutes ago. It isn't until you got close to them that you saw them, and they you. True Strike works only if you make an attack roll the very next round or is wasted. Keep in mind that the swamp counts as difficult terrain for you, limiting your movement speed.

Where you were was mud or swampy ground. About halfway in, it turned back into the deep water you've been travelling in the boat for as you were heading back into the swamp at that point. Fair enough about Maitreya, I'll wait and see how far away he puts you before I put up the map. That would be an awesome visual. Marsh Giant Mayhem Round 1 Update

Amelia spoke a word of magic and shot skyward in a blast of wind.

The third marsh giant watched her rise through the open jaws of the crocodile skull he wore as a helmet. He began to reach for the rack of pointed sticks in the wicker holder on his back but then thought again.

Guttural syllables fell from the giant’s lips worm-like lips as he pointed towards the carriage, clutching a fetish of mud and teeth in one webbed hand. The swamp churned as thousands of black, glistening worms swam into view - thousands of hungry, sucking mouths eager for blood.

With another grunt from the giant, the swarm of leeches began to swim towards the carriage and it’s juicy, blood-filled occupants.
Maitreya breathed in deeply, feeling the moisture on the air, and the cool chill as it gripped his skin.

He waited, ready to pounce if the giants advanced within range.

Delaying to just before the next giant to get within jumping range. This would not be a charge, however. The deep swamp water counts as difficult terrain for you and you cannot charge through it

Evelyn shrouded herself in shadows, fading from sight behind a veil of darkness.

Brand scanned the surrounding swamp land and its clusters of willows, tamarack, and alders. He could see a pathway of branches leading towards the giants, but knew that he’d be far less nimble clinging to a tress trunk. He splashed down into the swamp and slunk towards a nearby clump of vegetation.

The second giant plunged his hooked gaff into the swamps mud and physically tore a tree stump from the ground, roots and all. He turned a lazy circle, pinwheeling the stump through the air, hurtling it towards the carraige where it crashed through the mist-formed mounts, nearly dispelling them. 15 damage

Hurled Stump vs AC 19: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Stump Impact: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 = 15

Talon splashed down into the swamp and levelled his hand crossbow, the bowstring hummed, sending the bolt crackling into the distance.

Talon's Hand Crossbow vs Marsh Giant #2: 1d20 + 12 - 8 ⇒ (6) + 12 - 8 = 10
Bolt: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

The last giant hefted his crocodile-sttuded club and waded forward, then stopped as the Shaman grunted and rumbled, pointing to the clump of marsh grass Brand hid behind.

"Skinny piece o'gristle 'hind dem bushes. Squash 'im into jam. I likes jam, I does."

A length of sunken log was suddenly airborne, spinning through the air like a hurled caber towards the hidden monk, smashing his hiding place flat and clipping his shoulder with incredible force. 16 damage

Swamp Caber Toss vs AC 26: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
It's Log, It's Log Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 6) + 9 = 16
Concealment Miss Chance 01-50% Hit 51-00% Miss: 1d1 ⇒ 1

Maitreya's held action never goes off because no giants came within range.

Round 2 - Maitreya the Enlightened

Realizing the Giants have been oblivious to his light, perhaps unnoticed amongst the ghostly luminescence of the spectral steeds, Maitreya extinguished the light, and slipped into the water between the horses, lowering his whole body into the chill waters.

that is so long as it's not too deep? What exactly are we talking here? The new plan is to stay concealed in the water crocodile style, five feet in front of the horses. Then to once more hold an action till one is in range.

stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28
attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29

Amelia streaked further skyward, disappearing into the low low clouds that hung over the marsh. Peals of thunder and flashes of lightning escaped from the cloud as it slowly turned darker and darker.

Move 60 ft higher and use my vanish spell like ability. The special effects are me preparing to cast summon monster next round

Roughly waist deep. Using intimidate to demoralize an opponent is a standard action. You could not do that and still hold an attack. I figured you'd rather get an attack off, so went with that instead. It just didn't work out.

Sorry, you've got a lot going on here and I need some clarification. You are in waist deep swamp water, which counts as difficult terrain [x2 movement costs]. Last round you [swift action] spent 1 ki to get +20 movement, [move] moved at stealth to the bushes, [standard] drank your potion of true strike What are your plans for round 2 with spoilers if/or things work out differently.

If a giant comes in range or i can move to it.:

Spring attack! Brand will be doing a called shot to strike the head of the largest and most forbidding of the giants. He will also activate stunning blow to try and stun the monster. He will end up adjacent to the giant he strikes on the side farthest from the other giants.

Called shot (Head): 1d20 + 20 + 15 - 5 ⇒ (9) + 20 + 15 - 5 = 39
Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 3) + 3 + (4) = 13
Sickened(rounds): 1d4 ⇒ 3
DC-19 Fort save or be stunned if this hits.(your -2 sickened)

If no one comes in range:

Jump into tree I'm closest to and stealth check again.
jump check: 1d20 + 34 ⇒ (11) + 34 = 45
stealth: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29

Yep, I no longer intended to do that anyway. Thanks

Marsh Giant Mayhem Round 2 Update

Amelia rose yet higher and vanished into a bank of darkening cloud, her magic swirling around her as she began to call something from beyond…

The Shaman of The Hunger shook one massive fist at the wind wizard as she faded from sight and then called upon his dark god once more, the wisps of fog rising from the swampwater around him dancing and swirling as his dark prayers were answered.

The swarm of leeches wriggled through the water, swimming towards the phantom chariot and its occupants. A dozen attached themselves to the conjured horses, then a dozen more, then a hundred more, the horses falling back into mist as the leeches sucked and chewed.

Maitreya felt the bites as well as the leeches flowed onwards, surrounding him and attaching to his golden skin, a hundred pinpricks of pain.

Maitreya’s Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 -> No Effect!
Leech Swarm Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
Maitreya’s Nauseated Save vs DC 15: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Maitreya’s Poison Save DC 15: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 -> Fail!
Poison Drain on Dexterity: 1d4 ⇒ 1 -> 1 Dexterity Drain
Strength Drain by Swarm: 1d3 ⇒ 1-> 1 Strength Drain
Constitution Drain by Swarm: 1d3 ⇒ 1 -> 1 Constitution Drain

The closest giant is 65 feet away as per the battle map. With difficult terrain, this translates as 130 of movement required to be adjacent.

My vow of abstinence gives me a bonus vs. poison, so I made that save. Yay me.

I will instead move to close with the nearest giant. spending 1 ki to make that distance manageable in a double move.

Cool. I was just going by the stats I see above. Maybe change you stat line to say +whatever v poison if there is room to avoid me making the same mistake again.

It may get a little bulky, I have bonuses vs. lots of stuff, for or five. I'll look at it later and see if I can't add them in.

Hopefully, before combat begins, this power will effect one. Fort save DC 24, or confused for 9 rounds.

This was missed. Instead you had me put up Cloak of Darkness in rnd 1, which was already up (I put it up before getting in the carriage).

It wasn't missed. I just assumed you thought you had some kind of surprise round for a free evil eye attack. So I wrote out a long explanation that there wasn't a surprise round and waitied for you to out it as your first round actions. But you never actually posted any....Does that help explain it? Can you point me towards your evil eye power, it's range, etc.?

"Which way?"

Ok. I see this now.
