Maitreya Round 1, Init 25

Maitreya exhaled a deep breath, releasing air, pain, and exhaustion in one motion, as he inhaled again he felt life and energy reinvigorate his limbs as he looked over and saw the boy slide into the mouth of the beast, and then suddenly out the other end.

Mastery took a few steps, one foot landing between the crow and where Amelia had been a moment ago, the next hit the brim of the craft as Maitreya leapt flipping through the air to land on a nearby rock, from which he leapt again, pivoting as he did to jump and skip like a stone across the water until he landed before the bellowing beast.

"The young one is straightforward. The other is more...abstract" she thought to herself idly, as she watched the young plant monk force his way out of the giant turtle. "I'm sure they can deal with this beast, but at what cost"?

With an idle gesture and a word she sent a bolt of black lightning crackling into the creature, and smiled wanly as she watched it's muscles contract and stiffen.

Maitreya landed with a splash and waded his way towards the mammoth reptile. It's head pivoted, and the monk could see the odd patches of red growths studding its scaled form. A thousand questing finger-length tentacles wriggled in the mountain air from them, studded with black spots that might be eyes, mouths, or something else entirely.

The turtle's gaping maw swivelled in his direction as he struggled through the clinging muck on the moor's bottom, snapping at him as he moved, the head a split second too late to catch the monk.

The monks fist smashed into armored plate without effect.

The Snapping turtle had an AoO in the surprise round. It is now round 1. He gets another if provoked.

Talon launched himself from the eel boat, leaping towards the massive turtle as it snapped towards the wading monk. He leveled his hand crossbow and fired, driving another shocking bolt into the reptiles hide.

Before his eyes, the wound wriggled, red tendrils attempting to pull the flesh back together as though the wound had never been, then spasming, aimlessly writhing. Turtle attempts to regenerate but is somehow unable to do so.

The beast's maw swivelled and snapped, razor redged jaws lunging forward to clamp down on the Tengu rogue. Lunge Feat, +5 reach, -2 AC

Right. My post had you adjacent, flanking and attacking with your sword (which would give you sneak attack) becuase I thought thart's what you would have wanted. Yours has you at a distance firing your crossbow. Yours trumps mine so I changed it. No problem there. You hit it and did damage. You are still in the turtles reach on its turn and it bit you. Is any of that still confusing? I may be wording things wrong.

Oh Snap! Combat Update

Evelyn sat shrouded in darkness, her eyes adjusting to the lack of light.

She could hear the sizzling bolts of magic flash by and the bestial roar of the turtle as they hit.

The beast roared again as Brand's acidic strikes smashed armor plates and burned away great handfuls of reptilian flesh.

It lurched away from the pain of its wounds, only to find Maitreya waiting for it.

A halo of golden light flared above the monks head as he delivered precise strikes of his own. A great foreleg shattered, toppling the turtle into the swamp, a wake of water nearly capsizing the eel boat.

He struck again and something burst in the turtles neck with a sickening crunch. It gagged and its eye rolled up into its head.

A last ragged breath....and then silence.

The turtle seemed almost to fall into itself in death, its flesh eaten away by the fungus covering it and transformed into a crimson slime that sizzled and burned as it spread through the swamp water in a wide circle. Maitreya stepped atop a nearby stump and perched there over the acidic foam of the swamp. He bowed his head for a long moment over the decaying form of the great turtle.

The size of it was great, he must have been very old. To live so long and see the world grow around you....a terrible end. I pray this violence has brought you piece old one.

Mastery moved back to the raft, rushing to catch it before the currents might pull it too far away, and pulled it back to a position near the blind woman and beneath the floating one. There he left the craft and gingerly picked up the unconscious crow-like man.

These swamps hold many dangers. We should move on. If anyone has the means to help this one, that would be very wise.

Knowledge (engineering) 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

He will cast wood shape up to three times to completely fix any holes and use woodcraft for anything else.

woodcraft: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

He will also spend 4 ki points to regain 18 more HP

There, dad wouldn't want us travelling in anything not at its most sound.

Brand clearly sees that the constant jostling during the battle had driven the boat against submerged stumps or boulders, buckling the planks along one side and causing a slow leak, that left unchecked, might lead to further issues in the future.

Brand Orson [19 dmg]

Mmhmm, thought so.

Brands fingers ran across the wet crack at the bottom of the boat. Leafy growths crisscrossed the hole as the half-dryad concentrated. He plucked away the leaves revealing a smooth section where the hole had been.

There, dad wouldn't want us travelling in anything not at its most sound.

He pulled at the blood-soaked bottom of his shirt. He lifted it up revealing large angry purple bruises that formed on his torso.

Yeowch, did someone say something about healing?

Amelia stood in quiet contemplation for a moment and hurled one end of the rope she held towards the sky. When it reached it's apex there was a rumble like thunder and the rope hung there, suspended by only the force of her will. Smiling at the others she touched the unconscious tengu, and they both floated upwards and disappeared once they reached the top of the rope.

If you climb the rope:

Spoiler:
The sound of thunder rises and fades, and when your eyes begin functioning again you find yourself under a dome of infinite stars. A warm wind wafts the scent of woodsmoke, and turning you see a small fire crackling beneath the boughs of a yucca tree. As your eyes adjust to the dim light you realize that you are perched on the side of a small butte, with only clouds visible below and the stars above. The sounds of crickets and nightbirds, and the crackle of the fire are the only sounds to disturb the silence

Brand tugged at the bottom of the rope.
Well ill be damned.

He turned back to the monk and evelyn. Meet you guys up there I guess!

He grabbed the rope and swiftly climbed to the top, disappearing entirely.

Inside:
Brands mouth was held agape at the beauty of the place.
M'lady do you come here often? This is the most beautiful place ive ever seen!

He walked towards the edge of the butte and peered downwards.

I wonder if my dad ever saw anyplace this beautiful. Oh I know!!

He took out the brownish colored skull and held it aloft.

There Dad, now you can see it too!

For your father's sake I pray his spirit is not contained within. Maitreya said as he silently slid over the edge into the shelter.

He looked about the space, an eyebrow arched as he took in the miraculous surroundings. I commend you lady, a special place indeed.

With that, Maitreya moved to the side of the space, and sat, legs crossed. His hands rested on his knees, palms facing upwards, and he turned his eyes to the false stars, and smiled.

Brand looked at the skull. His face drooped as he studied its hollow eyes.

No, i hope your right. Its just nice to feel like i have him close.

He pulled a small rolled up piece of paper out of the skulls mouth.

I wonder if the fair vale five will ever return here? They came here a while ago i heard. But all i hear is rumors of stories.

He unrolled the paper. Dark dried blood mixed with a burn mark in the bottom right corner rubbed off on his finger.

Jotun, Zalus, Brunt, Anton and Arc. The Heroes of fair-vale. I'm hoping one of them knows who my mother is, or at least where to find her. But all i hear of them is of their death or disappearance.

He rolled the paper back and slid it inside the skull. He carefully and lovingly wrapped the skull back inside a soft cloth and put it in his pack.

All i know for sure is that the goblin named brunt was last seen heading north of here. So i'm following the best leads i can.

He laid back on the soft grass.

Till then, i plan on helping these people cause its what my father would have done. Being a brave hero and all.

After climbing up...
Evelyn took out her bedroll, and after a few bites of food, allowed herself to slip into a black sleep.

Evelyn calls on her magic, washing away the worldly hurts of her companions before slipping into her bedroll and well deserved sleep.

The group awakens under the same star-filled sky as when they initially began their slumber, the points of light like fireflies stuck in amber, forever and unchanging.

Only the fire is different, now burned down to warm coals, the smell of woodsmoke all but gone in the warm breezes that sweep the butte and rustle the thin, needle-like leaves of the yucca tree.

Talon rose to a seated position and glanced at Amelia. Fresh feathers had grown to replace those lost in the acidic slime left behind by the turtles passing, stark white against thier dark brothers, the effect striking. "This place? Is it a memory? Is it a dream? What meaning does it hold for you?"

After Evelyn's healing and a good night's rest, the party looks like this:

Brand Orson [1 dmg]
Talon the Storm Crow [2 dmg]

Our family need never leave us if their memory holds true. Is it not custom in these lands to lay the mortal coil to rest in the ground, or beneath stones? I have never seen one carry so physical a reminder of one no longer living before.
