Torrin motions to Feldar to hold position and goes to the rest of the group. "We need to move now and quietly 3 trolls are fighting if we go now and attack quickly we may be able to overpower them quietly before the others know whats happening. besides it shouldn't carry out of the cave since they are already fighting."

P.H. Dungeon |

Keep in mind torrid and Feldar have gone to scout ahead, so you would need to get the party's attention and wait a few minutes for them to get to you. However, I know also that the cavaliers were much more interested in trying to draw them out, so that they could potentially attack them from horseback. Anyhow, Torrin and Feldar are the ones that can see into the cave and know what is going on inside. If you want to get the party to help then signal for them and see what happens.

P.H. Dungeon |

Okay then. Assuming everyone else is cool with that, you have crept your way up the slope and are now situated near the mouth of the cave. The mouth of the cave is about 10' across, the opening goes back about 10' before it widens up into a roughly 20 by 20 area. The trolls are in the 20 by 20 area. One of them is standing with its back to the entrance while the other two are still engaged in some sort of scuffle and are rolling about on the ground deeper in the cave.
You guys have a surprise round.

Atayos Olytrius |

Surprise round is a single action, so moving forward OR throwing a knife for example. Not both and drawing another weapon. Just for future reference. Partial charge is always a good surprise round option, which is what Atayos will do.
Atayos rushed the Troll with his Guisarme in both hands and forced the Troll to the floor after upturning it with the haft of the long weapon.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 Trip VS flat-footed CMD.

P.H. Dungeon |

Well since Torrin hadn't actually altered the troll to his presence due to his stealth. Throwing the knife would be the surprise round action for him.
Rando takes a big swing at the troll with his sword, but the troll slaps the blade aside with a lanky arm.
Atayos rushes into the entrance of the cave and uses his pole arm to yank the trolls feet out form under him, knocking the creature prone.

Sorry for the delay, the last few days have been nuts...
Sir Garrett readies his sword and shield, following his honor guard into the cave. Seeing the downed troll, courtesy of Atayos, Garrett strikes at the fallen creature.
Attack:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Damage:1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Theodric Greyborne |

Theodric once again takes his short bow and holds position in the mouth of the cave. His shot aimed for the troll that looks like its had the worse of the rough and tumble
Initiative 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Attack Arrow 11/20 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

P.H. Dungeon |

I'm going to try and throw up a little map with some positioning tomorrow.
However, Sir Garret moves into the narrow entry tunnel beside Atayos and attacks the downed troll, landing a blow with his blade.
The entry section of the cave is 10' by 10' (4 squares total). Beyond that is the main cave, which is only 20' x20' ish. The 1st troll is on the ground in the main section of the cave just in front of the entry hall. Atyaos and Sir Garret are now holding the front line, while Rando and Torrin are just behind them. Theodric is just outside the cave standing at the entrance with his bow.
Unfortunately for Theodric, with the entire party blocking his line to the troll he suffers a -4 for firing into melee, and his shot misses, just grazing off of Sir Garret's shield.
The other two trolls that had been scuffling, realize that there is trouble. They stop fighting among themselves and hop to their feet.
Vors, Grendal and Feldar are hanging back on the pathway near the entry since there isn't room for them to get into the cave. You can hear Grendal getting impatient.
I have Gorum's good work to do. Make room or we can go deal with the other two!

Atayos Olytrius |

Could we get actual initiative rolls and an initiative order? Its all a bit of a confusing mess for me without it sorry. Theodric would actually have had an additional -8 to hit; firing at a prone target and firing into melee.

P.H. Dungeon |

Initiative:
Trolls: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Atayos: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Garret: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Theordric:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Rando: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Torrin: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
I'm going to leave Vors, Grendal and Feldar out of the order since they are currently out of the cave and might be heading off to deal with the other two trolls.

![]() |

Atayos makes a good point. Ranged attackers are currently suffering a -8 (-4 for firing into melee and -4 for firing on a prone target).Though you could potentially fire at one of the trolls further back in the cave and take only a -4.
Unless you are assigning a cover bonus, the other trolls should be normal AC as they are not currently engaged in melee.

Atayos Olytrius |

Atayos stood a little behind and to Garrett's right its a reach weapon so he is one rank back from Garrett, still adjacent diagonally though so he could properly utilise his weapon and ward off claws that might harm his ward. He only growled in annoyance at Grendal and sent his Guisarme hacking through troll flesh.
1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 4 = 25 Attack roll, IC, Attacking Prone)
2d4 + 5 ⇒ (4, 4) + 5 = 13 IC, Damage
AC21 from use of combat expertise (no penalty due to threatening defender)

torrin'del drassin |

im going on vacation tomorrow for 2 weeks so i am going to be posting more sporadically. sorry for the inconvience.
Torrin moves back knowing he is not a front line fighter. and readys an action to be able to protect himself should trouble come to him.

![]() |

Garrett continues to hack at the downed troll, channeling a bit of his magical energies into the blade...
Attack:1d20 + 6 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 + 4 = 27 (inspire courage, vs. prone)
Damage:1d8 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 8 (inspire courage, arcane strike)

P.H. Dungeon |

The troll on the ground is definitely still thrashing around. It deflects Rando's attack with a long rubbery arm. Sir. Garret lands a solid blow on thing causing nasty troll blood to spray in his face. Atayos jabs his Gusiarme into the thing's chest inflicting a nasty wound.
The troll, not being the brightest creature, tries to regain its footing, standing from prone and slashing out in rage at Sir Garret with a clawed hand.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Potential Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
This action, of course provokes attacks of opportunity for those threatening it in melee. I believe that would be Rando, Garret and Atayos.
The other two trolls in the back of the cave are now focused on the fight between you guys and the trolls. You note that both are injured from their scuffle with each other, but they are allow their natural regeneration do its work, while you beat on their companion.

![]() |

AoO:1d20 + 6 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 + 4 = 28 (inspire courage, vs. prone)
Damage:1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 1 = 12 (inspire courage)
Will wait until all of the AoOs are resolved before posting a round 2 action.

P.H. Dungeon |

As the troll struggles to get to its feet, the two brothers and their protector viciously start hacking at the fell creature. All three warriors land terrible blows on the troll. Fetid blood gushes from its multiple wounds. It shrieks in agony and collapses to the ground. It's unconscious, but you have already witnessed how fast these beasts heal.

Theodric Greyborne |

Rd. 2 Antagonize other creature to attack me hopefully provoking AoO from the others.
Antagonize 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
You know, your brother meet his end at the end of a stick. I hope you have more...fortitude than he. Theodric quips to the troll.

![]() |

Garrett moves forward to engage another troll, briefly enchanting his blade prior to the strike.
Attack:1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 1 = 12 (inspire courage)
Damage:1d8 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 10 (inspire courage, arcane strike)

Atayos Olytrius |

Atayos stepped up and remained just behind Rando and Garrett- keeping his eyes peeled for more Trolls and arcing his Guisarme to deflect claws and teeth away from his ward.
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Perception
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 Standard action to aid another to boost Garrett's AC by 4.
If Rando is struck this round, Atayos will use an AOO to use Bodyguard, granting him +4 AC against the attack. Roll (DC10)- 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

P.H. Dungeon |

Okay I want to get this on track here, so here's the map I was promising. Sorry for the delay.
On the map troll #1 is currently KOed. The area outside is the trail that led up to the cave and continues to other caves.
The placements of the PCs are based on where I had them at the end of round #1. Feel free to retcon any round #2 actions based on what you now understand from the map, and clarify which spot on them map you wish to move to for round #2 if you want to move. I can then update the map and repost.

Atayos Olytrius |

Let them come to you lads... Atayos muttered to his ward and his brother, poised to defend them.
With them trapped like rats, just ready an action to strike rather than approach them, especially with someone antagonising one of them. A readied action can include a 5 foot step which means you can step into their reach when they approach to attack. That is assuming they don't march right up to you within 5 feet, which is what i'm hoping for as it bodes better for Rando's defence. It also means you don't get full attacked so soon of course ;).
Round 2 Initiative Order-
Theodric (action declared)
Atayos (action declared)
Torrin
Garret (action declared)
Rando (action declared)
Trolls

![]() |

Ready to move forward and attack the troll, Garrett pauses after hearing his guards words. "Rando, he's right, let them come to us."
change originally stated action/rolls to readied action when on approaches.

P.H. Dungeon |

I'm going to assume for the moment that since Garret has decided to hold his position and Rando had declared he would help his brother that Rando will also stay and hold his action, as opposed to running out against two trolls on his own.
The troll (T2) that Theodric was taunting can't resist his insults and hurls himself towards the party to try to get to Theodric. However, Garret, Rando and Atayos form a wall between the troll and its target. It steps over top of its downed mate and reaches for Sir Garret in an attempt to hurl him out of the way.
Combat Maneuver against Sir. Garret, Provoking attacks of Opportunity: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
