Senzer looks puzzled for a moment as Dale continues your ruse, then nods slightly in understanding, though he doesn't start whispering in return, looking more defeated then worried now.

Though when he sees Brady tying one of them up, he frowns. "Just finish them and toss 'em in the river." He suggests. "They deserve no better. If any of them get word back to Lura, I'm done for... so's my boy!"

He stops cleaning up, and leans against the counter, sighing. "Poor Roald. That's where this mess all started." He looks up at you, imploringly. "He was so sick. This cursed jungle has a million ways to kill you, and most of them you can never see coming. Why any decent person would choose to live in this god-forsaken place..."

"I'd tried everything! He only got worse."

"When she came to me, claiming she had a cure, of course I promised to do anything." He shakes his head slightly. "I signed away my entire operation to the heartless wench to cure my son. What else could I do? Daily she'd send her potion... and the symptoms stopped progressing, they did... but its been weeks, and he hasn't gotten any better."

"A few days back, I finally got a chance to analyze the cure she was providing." He continues, his face filled with barely controlled rage. "I thought maybe I could duplicate it, maybe improve upon it... perhaps even get out from under Lura's thumb."

"But it turned out to be a simple elixir diluted with cheap rum to the point of being almost useless." He slams his fist down on the counter, causing some of the bottles and vials beneath it to rattle about.

"It was never going to cure Roald." He can barely keep his anger down. "And in exchange for all this help? She's worked me sunup to sundown manufacturing drugs for her little den of vice," He waves one hand dismissively in a southerly direction, and almost spits out the name, "The Sanguine Pit."

"That's why I've missed all the pickups for you folks. I'd hoped you'd come to investigate."

Dale shrugs and nods when Senzar says to just finish them off and dump them like the others did back at the bar. "Seems like this place doesn't get very sentimental, fine by me."

Once it seems they have some privacy Dale will let his guard down so they can have a frank conversation with the man. "Sounds like you're in quite the pickle here, maybe we can help you out? Do you have any idea what exactly is making your son sick? I'm assuming a simple antitoxin or antiplague won't do the job?"

Dale motions to the others to pipe up and drop the act for a bit.

"What is making him sick?" He says angrily, "This g&~+%@ned jungle, that's what. And yes, I tried everything."

"But I know that b!#*& has a real cure. Her name is Lura Ichon. She's a higher ranking member of the Consortium." He spits out this last bit, clearly having no love for the Aspis in town. "Whatever she's been sending has kept him from getting worse, so there must be a tiny enough amount of it in those snake oils. Just not enough to actually finish the job... and she knows it. There were enough unidentifiable compounds in the elixir, those must be what he needs."

"But I can't just march into that bar and demand she give it up." He looks around resignedly at the unconscious and dead men in the shop. "She usually had one of them keeping an eye on me all day... today she sent three. As soon as she learns what happened to them... she'll kill Roald and me for sure now."

"I've been helping your Society now for three years, I need you to return that favor, now, or I won't be able to help you or that excavation site of yours any longer." He looks at you all and his mouth sets in a firm frown. "I need that cure for my son, and some assurances Lura Ichon won't just dump us both into the river, as soon as you leave."

"That is what I need."

What the hell... the board has language filters? Didn't realize that! =)

Yup filters, I just translate in my head. Guy seems pretty pissed!

Dale blinks his eyes a bit and leans his head back away from the Father as he vents his frustration. Once he seems to have gotten it out of his system Dale continues in a more understanding tone. "Hrmm. We're going to have to come up with a good plan to accomplish something that dangerous. Do you have any of the 'cure' left around so I can take a look? I need to know what it could be so I know what to nab in there." Dale starts taking out his own alchemy tools and journal.

"We'll also need as much information as possible about this place. Rough layout, how many people are usually around, anything that can get us in and out without having to do anything crazy. We'll also of course need descriptions of your son and Lura." Dale's mind then goes to work trying to figure out a plan.

Chime in people, I assume this is the secondary success condition. Seems like it could be pretty difficult to accomplish this without drawing even more attention to ourselves unless we're somehow quite sneaky.

Fritannia gives a smirk as she spears the last man, "Told ya I was handy with a spear." She gives a look around the room and, seeing no other threats to her 'bosses' she sits down and starts cleaning her longspear.

When the owner starts on about the group being Pathfinders, Fritannia quickly retorts, "We ain't no stinking Pathfinders!" but quickly helps to making noise to cover Dale's whispers.

Faliana stops when Sanzar and Dale make it clear they can speak freely. She gives a sigh of relief stretches and drops the mercenary act, she then turns to the man and in an exasperated tone asks, "What is with this place and dropping bodies in the river? Is it consecrated? Or do you just not have undead or necromancers? Well, It might explain the smell around here..."

As the man riles himself up into a cursing frenzy, Faliana gives a sympathetic look and nods along to his complaints. "That sounds horrid, and I, for one, would be glad to help. Anyone willing to use the life of a child to turn a profit is despicable. But we need details, because we need to get enough of the elixir to help your son, preferably destroy her contract over you and somehow make it so the whole thing doesn't get traced back to us or more importantly you."

She stops for second thinking. After a moment she gives a slight sigh, "If you must, but no insulting or seducing." She then looks at Sanzar and explains, "I channel spirits and the spirit I have currently knows a lot more about this kind of work than I do, so I'm going to let her ask you some questions." She stops and then slowly her face takes on a more fey appearance, with a slight smile and a mischievous look in her eyes. In a much more sultry and softer voice Fritannia starts to ask the man details about Lura Ichon and her establishment. " Does she have any vices or hobbies? Does her place have a back entrance? Is it guarded? What kind of place is this Sanguine Pit? I want everything you know about this place. And it's too bad I can't flirt, I've always had a thing for caring fathe..." She flinches slightly, and sighs out a, "Fine," before continuing her interrogation.

Sorry for not posting! I got my PDF of the Starfinder rulebook and spent almost literally all of yesterday reading it...

Senzer looks confused for a moment by Dale, then insulted as he realizes what he's asking. "I assure you, I am quite good at my craft. It's my boy. If there was something to learn I would have told you." He says with a frown. "And the equipment I have is far better suited to such things than what you're carrying in your pockets."

"The sample I was able to analyze was days ago, and that's long gone. All the rest has gone to Roald. It may not cure him, but it keeps him from getting worse, I wasn't about to deny him more, and Lura's thugs were always watching."

"There is nothing left to examine. He's upstairs now, asleep..." He gives Dale a pointed glare, heading off the question before it's asked. "And no, you can not check him out."

He opens a small drawer behind the counter, and pulls out a small clay vial. "Here, they always deliver the stuff in these. It's all I've got."

When both Dale and Faliana start grilling him about the Sanguine Pit and Lura, he holds up his hands helplessly.

"Contract?" He almost laughs, though the sound ihas a note of manic in it. "This is Bloodcove, contracts are what you distract someone with while you stab them in the back."

"I've never been to the Sanguine Pit." He adds. "It's a sleazy tavern, down on the docks. I know nothing about it, other then that's where Lura spends her time, and where she sells most of the drugs she's had me make."

"As for Lura," He shrugs. "She's a real piece of work, dark hair, beautiful... dresses really classy, but that just covers the animal underneath. Never goes anywhere without that twin sister of hers. Well... I assume they're twins, they look alike, though Bellu is probably a foot and a half taller... and all muscle. All Lura's other men seemed afraid of her."

He will tell you where the Sanguine Pit is (its marked on the map), but knows nothing about it other then the name and location.

After making sure that both unconscious thugs are securely tied, Brady simply listens as Dale and Faliana gather the details of the situation. He frowns when the boy's situation is explained. Using the health of a child this way, held hostage and for what? Some drug?"

"We'll do whatever we have to. They'll pay for Roald's pain."

Gathering the others around to discuss a plan, Brady offers his own suggestion. "We've already established ourselves as merchants in the area, if somewhat bungling. What if the reason we behaved a bit odd was that we had a deeper design? Let's go visit this Sanguine Pit as if our ultimate goal here was to purchase a large supply of these drugs, and our odd and obvious purchase of the caravan and supplies was the cover for that."

And when it inevitably goes wrong and we have to kill half the people there, it'll just be a drug deal gone wrong.

When people give the old monk a sideways look at that he shrugs.

This is a situation I doubt can be resolved peacefully. Even if we get the snake, she'll go after our friend here and his son as soon as we leave. She needs to be removed from the equation.

His old eyes are hot with anger as he taps his staff to the floor.

And I agree, that b~~@~ probably shouldn't be breathing, she sounds like she'll target anyone she can get leverage over without mercy."

She stops and pauses for a moment to think. She then continues, "If we are going with the 'undercover drug buyers' aspect we should probably have one of us leave here either pissed off we couldn't buy any from Sanzar here or ratled about the fact there were guards here. Although initially hesitant, Senzer eventually allows him to pray to Sarenrae in Roald's behalf, before sending you all on your way.

It is evening when you finally leave the shop, the sun gone, and the city now lit by numerous lanterns lined up along many of the boardwalks. Bloodcove at night is much like Bloodcove by day, and also quite different. The smells and activity and temperature have not changed... but the humidity seems to have gone up even more, if that's possible... and the sounds are different as well. It takes you a moment to realize its not the city that sounds different at night, but the mangrove swamp on which it is built. Creatures of all sorts seem to have come to life all around, and a whole new retinue of biting and stinging insects seem to have taken over from their daytime counterparts.

No one seems to be paying you much attention as you travel through the city's bobbing streets... the dim light and dampness seeming to keep most of them moving to wherever it is they go. You find that Senzer gave you good directions, and it takes you little time working your way back towards the docks in the direction of The Sanguine Pit, to locate the place. In fact, you hear it long before you see it. The raucous noise emanating from within noticeable long before the lights that stream from windows, cracks in the walls, and doorway as drunk or drugged-out patrons occasionally stumble out into the humid night air. You don't notice until you're up close, but the entire building is painted red.

With some trepidation, you enter through the main doorway and are immediately hit by a wave of noise that is almost palpable. The clamor of cheers and shouted bets drowns out any intelligible sounds in the large, crowded bar before you. The place is packed! You guess that there are well over a hundred people jammed into the place at present, making it hard to maneuver, much less pick out individuals.

Beyond the noise and crowd, the first thing you notice is a massive aquarium, fifteen feet on a side and filled with water, dominating the center of the room. Within, a dog-sized lobster creature and a dark green, man-sized fish with fanged jaws circle one another, occasionally trading blows. Each time they do, the noise rises to a deafening crescendo, and more coins change hands.

Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC 12:
The lobster-like creature is an aquatic abberation known as a reefclaw. Quite vicious and intelligent. Unsuspecting humanoids are one of it's preferred prey, though will settle for other sea-life in a pinch.

Knowledge (nature) DC 14:
The large fish is a species of barracuda native to swamps and tropical environments. Aggressively carnivorous, you can only imagine what it took to haul it here.

Heady, pungent smoke fills the air, and the floor is slick with spilled drinks and seawater.

When he first notices the aquarium, Brady grumbles about its placement. "That's a ridiculous aquarium for this space; look how much space it takes up, and how many people are in her; it would be so much more comfortable without it, don't you think?" But he quickly realizes what's going on. "Ahhh, it's a fighting ring. Gotcha. That makes more sense."

"So how do we find this Lura in this mess?" He looks at the others. "This isn't going to be easy." Expecting that in even this kind of crowd he'll be overheard, he continues. "She's the whole reason we're here. That ridiculous subterfuge earlier today will be worthless if we can't find her."

Finding your target does not prove overly difficult once you start moving into the crowded room and get a clear view to the far side of the aquarium.

On the far side of the central tank, stands a well-dressed and well rounded woman with raven hair, and the look of someone in charge of what's going on around her, that could only be Lura Ichor. Towering over her, nearly seven feet tall, stands a second woman who appears nothing less than an idealized, amazonian reflection of the first. This one eyes the crowd with a watchful eye, not paying the fight in the tank in front of them much heed at all. Both women bear a curious glowing sigil on their foreheads.

The bookies clearly defer to the smaller woman, and everyone appears to keep their distance from both of them, causing a small area around them to be clear of the pressing crowds.

To be fair, we are talking about a class description with no associated skill check to figure it out. I'd go back and edit it out, but to late now, but you can retcon that if you like.

Monty indicates for the others to wait, as he fights his way through the crowd of patrons, hoping to make introductions or arrange a meeting with the woman waiting on the far side of the aquarium.

Moving through the crowds is tough, and he has more then one elbow or fist thrown his way for his trouble, though he nimbly dodges them. None of them seem to amount to anything, as long as he moves past.

As Monty approaches, he realizes that the taller woman's eyes are following him the entire way, having picked him out of the crowd long before he reaches them. She steps in front of him before he can get too near her charge, the threat obvious.

Now that he is closer, he will quickly realize that though the two women are somewhat the same, they are also strikingly different. Where Lura appears a little small and awkward, Bellu is imposing and graceful. They appear almost like opposite ends of the same person.

Lura does not seem to pay him much heed as Monty pleads his case, her eyes watching the match unfolding in the aquarium, but eventually she glances over.

"And what have we here? A little monkey man from the jungle?" She says, her tone not overly friendly, but curious. She glances briefly over at her companion, who's eyes never leave you, then back at Monty. "We get so few of your kind here in our fair city."

Suddenly she starts addressing him in the local language, the words racing off her tongue in the quick staccato notes that identify it as polyglot.

When it soon becomes clear that Monty does not understand what she's saying, she smirks slightly, and switches back to common.

"I am quite busy here at the moment. I'm afraid you've been misinformed. I am not a merchant." She waves her hand to indicate the spectacle in the aquarium and the chaos all around. "As you can see, my business is entertainment."

She gives Monty a frown. "And my time is valuable. To valuable to waste on the hired help. Your master will have to find his goods elsewhere."

She suddenly smiles, on the surface pleasantly, but underneath, not at all. "But of course, now I must wonder who you do work for..."

With no words spoken, Bellu takes a threatening step forward.

Everyone else:
You notice the taller woman seems to watch him approach apparently picking him out of the crowd long before he reaches them. Her face is an impassive mask, but she moves to intercept him as he gets near, interposing herself between Lura and him.

Monty bows and addresses the woman, though you can not hear what he is saying over the chaotic din... Nor what her response is... though as it progresses, you get the impression it is not going overly well.

The conversation is relatively quick, before the taller woman moves to tower over the smaller Monty threateningly.

Before leaving the shop Faliana begrudgingly drops back into Fritannia's mercenary persona, and lumbers out of the shop a slightly ticked look on her face. She stays near the front of the group as they move through the alleys and humidity, swatting at the bugs and trying to keep an eye on their group.

Inside the Sanguine Pit, she tries to keep a mask of a threatening mercenary as best as possible, trying not to stare at the tank. They do fish fights as well, why am I not surprised? After a few seconds of the pressing crowd, her face takes on a dour look of annoyance and she starts to jostle people to keep them away from her bosses and healer. "Not too close there! Oh ya, get away from 'im. Just stay back an' ya won't get 'urt."

She tires to also keep an eye on Monty, while keeping the crowd at a distance, and when the woman threateningly looms over the man, a genuine look of concern flashes over her face for a second. Mollified he knows what he is doing she stays near the rest of the group and goes back to trying to keep a clear space for her employers.

Again, she glances towards Bellu, though no words are exchanged, and she nods slightly before pulling out a small flask. She pours it into glass sitting unused on the table beside her. "One of the advantages of running the place." She says, with a conspiratorial wink. "I get all the good stuff."

"Now, run along little monkey-man. Before I decide you owe me for wasting my time. You tell your boss to come over here himself if he wishes to talk. Perhaps share a drink with me." She holds up her just poured beverage, and pauses again, her head tilted slightly.

"Though just him and one other." She adds, a moment later. "That should be enough to keep this rabble at bay, don't you think? I do so hate crowds."

She smiles innocently, completely aware of the irony of that last statement. She then waves Monty away, clearly dismissing him.

Monty, Sense Motive DC 13:
You are pretty sure she is not buying into your harmless servant/guide schtick at all, and hasn't since you first spoke.

She seems to be playing along while waiting for something...

Monty, Sense Motive DC 15 (separate check):
You thought you were being pretty convincing, actually, but there seems to be some sort of communication you can't see between Lura and Bellu, and it is the later that is seeing through you're attempts at subterfuge.

Everyone Else:
As the larger woman, Bellu, looms over Monty threateningly, he quickly starts to grovel and do his best to look completely harmless, which at first glance, seems to dissuade the situation.

Lura says a few more things to him, while she pours herself a drink, then waves at him dismissively, to go away.

All but Monty, Sense Motive DC 15:
Its hard to tell from across the room, but you're pretty sure she's not buying Monty's act, despite it seeming pretty convincing.

As Monty wades back through the crowed to rejoin the others, you see Lura motion over one of the servants, and whisper something to him. He nods, then hurries off, disappearing quickly into the crowd. She then goes back to watching the bout in the aquarium with unconcerned indifference.

All but Monty, Perception DC 25:
As you wait for Monty to finish, you notice one of the staff members, over behind the bar to the right open a concealed cabinet behind the bar, revealing a locked safe of some sort. He does not open the safe, instead pulling out a small wrapped package, from a stack of the same, that he hands to a second, seedy-looking, fellow nearby.

Dale, re: glass:
Dale knows that in order to hold the weight of that amount of water at bay, the glass would need to be considerably thicker then normal, especially given the square shape of it would not be optimal, structural strength-wise. Which starts him pondering just how much the water in such a tank would weigh or how much force it would be exerting outwards on the glass... quickly distracting him with mathematical calculations in his head.

He is not quite able to identify a structural weakness, having not dealt with that thick a glass before!

"That's some thick glass! The sheer volume of water... at over 8 pounds per gallon, give or take based on the actual salinity of course, and the relative displacement of those creatures.. which likely aren't much different than the weight of water...hrm what do you suppose those dimensions are Brady?"

Edit: Noticing the sigils on the two individuals heads Dale's eyes go wide with interest, he turns his back on Lura and her goon "Wow! A summoner... that big brute is likely a summoned creature or some such from another plane of existance and formed with Lura's mind! She may be a powerful spellcaster! And she really thinks highly of herself!"

Most of the patrons seems like regular dockworkers or commoners of no import, so Faliana's threats and elbows are able to keep a few of them at bay... but the sheer press of bodies makes it hard for even the ones that want to back away to do so, and those that do are quickly replaced by others trying to get a better view of the fight.

Dale, re: sigils:
You recall once, reading about people who's minds have a stronger then typical link to the outer and transitive planes. So much so, that summoning creatures from those places proves as easy as a thought for them... and they can even manage to form a link with one specific creature that forms an even stronger more permanent bond. Such a creature is usually shaped by the person's own id and ego and can take a multitude of shapes and forms because of it. It is known as an eidolon, as it usually represents a more idealized form of an existing outsider, but due to the nature of its creation, it can realistically appear like anything the one that summons it can imagine. The more ancient forms of this power, have the creature sharing the same moral and ethical aptitudes as the one that summoned it, though usually far more powerful physically. That is far less common today.

Whatever the process is, the link that bonds the two often manifests in the form of a glowing sigil on the forehead of one, duplicated on the other, and you think you might be looking at just such a link here. The ability is quite rare, and some of its more powerful forms are thought to no longer be possible at all...

Hmm.. not sure how that would even work... though I suppose one person might notice one thing... that would lead to another focusing more closely on another. So, if Brady doesn't get a 19 or 20 and make it on his own, and you can explain in IC, then sure why not. Its hard enough to make as it is =)

Alrighty it looks like Brady didn't make the perception check, so I'll try to aid. I hope this is a good enough IC reason... It was hard to think of a good one when I don't know what I'm looking for.

Faliana catches a glimpse of... something, but the crowds block her way. She bullies a few people out of the way but with the thronging crowd can't take a moment to figure out what it was. While keeping the view clear, she calls out to Dale in hopes he can see better. "Hey, boss! I think there's somethin' over there."

-----
On the topic of sending people, Brady and Dru sounds good, but Dale and Dru or Dale and Brady might also work. An option might be to have Dale and Brady go, but have the two mercenaries move closer and hang back 'for protection.' If we are set on talking this out Faliana has great diplomacy, but I reeeaalllly don't like the looks of that runner, so I'm going to vote for the more aggressive option of talk but quickly find a reason to attack.

Brady makes his way over to where Lura still waits, Dru dogging his steps. At the same time, the rest of the Pathfinders attempt to get into more advantages positions, with varying degrees of success.

Monty has no problem moving away from the spectacle in the center of the tavern, most folks happily allowing him to move away from their view. He stops by one of the nearby rooms, the strong smell of narcotics wafting out of it.

Monty, the ceiling in here arches quite high, roughly 20' up over the main open area. But there are many beams and rafters, all with with numerous hooks and bits of rope from previous activities, so its all easy to clamber around in.

Dale, Faliana, and Tad try to get a little closer. Dale acting like some sort of madman, waves around his spoon/wand, and it seems to do the trick, as people back off almost instinctively. He is able to halve the distance to Lura and Bellu, though there are still tables and people in the way. Tad realizes pretty quickly that his small stature is a hindrance navigating the press of distracted bodies and is nowhere near where he wanted to be by the time Brady and Dru reach their target. "I suppose you're the monkey's 'boss'?" Although posed as a question, its clear she's not really asking.

"It is abundantly clear that your ability to follow directions is as stunted as your subtlety." She adds, glancing disdainfully towards Dale and the others as they moves in closer.

She suddenly smiles wickedly. "So there are many places you will go." She holds up her drink in a mock salute. "Bellu does so prefer the hard way."

She looks over towards a nearby bookie and shouts, "Parlay bet!" her voice rising above the din of the crowd as she drinks her beverage in one long gulp, and suddenly disappears from sight.

At the same time, with no obvious communication, Bellu steps forward and starts throwing punches at both Dru and Brady, a smile of anticipation on her stately face. You're not sure what would have happened if she'd not been wearing it! Dru reals back from the force of the blow, her ears ringing. (14 damage to Dru)

Brady only barely manages to react in time to the the followup blow directed at him, as it glances harmless off his armor, and nails a bystander standing behind him. Bones crunch as the man drops to the floor, unmoving.

Bellu laughs at the sound, not caring that she hit the wrong person.

All around, confusion breaks out, as the bookie starts echoing the 'Parlay bet!' phrase, and the entire room becomes even more chaotic as people start trying to scramble out of the way.
