Dragonlance: Heroes of a New Age

Game Master Shalafi2412

What came before...:

Six months have passed since the War of Souls, an epic conflict that spanned the world of Krynn. After 39 years when the Gods have been silent and magic flowed unrestrained by the Moons, the Gods of Krynn have returned. The first among the Light, Paladine walks the earth as a mortal, while the Dark Queen Takhisis lies dead, leaving their places vacant among the heavens. Ansalon still bears scars of the decades where evil reigned upon the world in the Godless times. The Dark Knights of Neraka still subjugate numerous lands and the wicked minotaurs have begun a campaign of conquest. Many among the righteous and good have suffered in the Age of Mortals. Solamina's forces are weakened by the war, the elves are in exile, the Kender lands burned to ash and the dwarves in ever conflict with their darker brethren. Decades ago, the Companions saved the world from the brink of ruin. Now once again, heroes must rise and bring balance back to the world. Will you be among them?

Cole Initiative 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Cole Fort Save 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Cole appears to stand the stench of the creature, probably having smelled bad enough stuff at the bandit camp.

Quintis Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Quintis Fort Save 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Quintis chokes and gags at the stench of this place, his delicate elf constitution unable to handle the smell.

Anyway assuming the ghouls are first two of them charge in while the other one gets up from shifting through the pile and moves towards you. Fortunately as you expected a fight you aren't flat footed.

Ghoul 1 Charge: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 on Gabriel
Ghoul 2 Charge: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 on Jor

Jor gets a face full of ghoul as it bites through the armor on his shoulder.

he takes 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Now since Jor actually got a natural 20 on his previous fortitude save I shall give him a +5 bonus on the first saving throw versus the paralysis. However he has to make 2 saves, one for the Paralysis and one for the disease.

Fort vs Paralysis: 1d20 + 5 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 5 = 14

Ok both saves pass. DC for Paralysis was 13 and 24 does make the disease roll. Since the Ghoul went before you Jor you can chose to change your action. Remember the ghouls are -2 AC for charging at the moment so it is a good time to strike

What a hit!

Ok the ghoul is split asunder by the mighty blow struck by Jor that cuts it down from shoulder to hip and sending it to the ground in a bloody heap.

Anyway to speed things along I'll make a few rolls for Gabriel.

Fort Save VS Sickened: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Initiative Roll: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4

Anyway as for NPC actions, the first to act is Quintis. He moves up into the protection zone of Terevalis and takes a shot at the far ghoul

Arrow Shot: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 - 2 = 10

But the arrow flies wide of the target.

Cole musters his courage...

Courage Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

He musters enough courage to get out from where he was. He moves behind Terevalis and then encants as an orb of flame appears in his hand and he tosses it at the closest ghoul.

Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 4 = 17

The ghoul gets struck with a flaming orb of fire and takes 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 fire damage as the orb burns its flesh. It hisses in discomfort.

The Creature behind the table reacts by leaping over the table and moving closer. Fortunately it is sluggish this first round as it takes a chance to savour the party with his eyes before reacting. However he now seems ready to attack.

Gabriel will smite the Ghast before taking a 5' step and striking out at the ghoul.

"Come at me beast, if you will."

Gabriel cuts down the ghoul in front of it removing the creature's head from its shoulders sending its head toppling to the ground with its body soon falling to the ground afterwards. Gabriel activates smite at the Ghast drawing its attention somewhat.

Ok as for Mithas, he would have gone before Gabriel however to avoid retconning we'll say he delayed until after the Ghast moved to get a better shot and then plopped two arrows into the creature. However as he was not at 30 feet at the time you only got an 18 and 20 which both hit but he does not get point blank shot damage, just 6 and 4 HP damage for a total of 10 HP damage.

Mithas holds his action till the Ghast makes his move and then quickly unleashes a pair of arrows into creature striking it in the chest and digging into its mass of flesh. The creature looks injured but still hungry to kill something.

Round 2 begins

The other ghoul charges forward and attacks Gabriel with a bite attack.

Ghoul Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

And misses horribly.

Next up Quintis gets to go and takes a shot at the ghast

Arrow Shot: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 2 = 6 and misses his mark.

Knowledge Religion 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 to see if his snowball spell would be of use against a member of the undead.

Terevalis knows that Ghouls and Ghasts are not particularly immune to any kind of elemental damage so the snowball will work. What does not work is the staggar effect as Undead are immune to most things that give a fortitude save.

Ok lets resolve actions. Jor takes a swing at the ghoul but despite being off balance from the charge evades the blow from his blade.

Althea channels energy hitting both the ghoul and the ghast

Will Save Ghoul: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Will Save Ghast: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Both the ghoul and the ghast are only minorly harmed by the positive energy and makes the Ghast more angry.

The arrow from Terevalis hits the ghast for minor damage (-2 damage due to Sickened)

Cole takes a 5 foot forward and then unleashes another Lesser Orb of Fire, this time at the Ghast.

Fire Orb Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Ok so Gabriel hits the Ghast and hisses in pain as the holy blow from Gabriel's sword cuts into it.

Round 3 Actions

Not wanting to step on the toes of the master's feeding the normal ghoul changes targets to Jor attacking with claws and bite.

Ghoul Claw 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Ghoul Claw 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Ghoul Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Fortunately Jor's defensive stance pays off and he evades the flurry of blows.

Jor swings with his sword but does a clumsy swing after evading the attacks from the ghoul

Quintis moves and then takes an arrow shot at the Ghast

Arrow Shot: 1d20 + 5 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 5 - 4 - 2 = 8

But misses with the shot.

Terevalis hits the ghast with some acid causing a part of its flesh to sizzle a little.

Althea channels energy and 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
But the ghoul and ghast are barely hurt.

Cole wishing to conserve his magical energy points his finger at the Ghast and shoots a Ray of fire. 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 2 - 4 = 16

The ray strikes the ghoul doing 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 fire damage, burning its flesh.

The Ghast angry at Gabriel yells "I shall feast on your flesh! and attacks

Ghast Claw 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Ghast Claw 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Ghast Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

A claw and a bite rips into Gabriel while one claw barely deflects off his armor. He'll need to make 3 fortitude saves (2 for paralysis and 1 for disease)

Paralysis Save 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Paralysis Save 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Disease Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

Gabriel is able to power through the lethargy but feels grossed out having had being bitten by that hideous creature. He responds with another holy blow with his weapon on the creature.

As for Mithas he flurry of arrows on the ghoul fighting Jor.

Shot 1: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 1 - 2 = 11
Shot 2: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 - 2 = 5
But misses his mark on the ghoul.

Round 4 actions

The Ghoul attacks Jor with a Claw-Claw-Bite combo

Claw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Claw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

But once again fails to hit Jor and leaves himself open for attack.

Round 4: Initiative 12

Dropping his defense and focusing now only to attacking Jor brings his sword down towards Ghouls neck

Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 2 = 14
Damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15

HP: 24/24 AC: 15

Since the Ghast tore into me in round 3 before my swing Gabriel will add a lay on hands to the round.

Lay On Hands: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Round 4:
Lay on Hands: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

"You will feast on my blade beast"

Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

This is only if he doesn't paralyze me on his round 4 :)

Jor's blade cleaves into the Ghoul slicing through its neck and into the torso of its body slicing it nearly sideways. The body collapses to ground dead for good.

Quintis finding it hard to get a shot with his bow drops his bow draws his longsword and moves to flank the ghast.

Sword Stab: 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 - 2 = 4

But he swings and misses gagging on the stench of this creature.

Cole uses another fire ray on the Ghast Fire Ray: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 2 - 4 = 5

But this time the fire ray misses its mark leaving a scorch mark on nearby wall.

The Ghast still insanely enraged attacks Gabriel with its claws and bite.

Ghast Claw 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Ghast Claw Confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Ghast Claw 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Ghast Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

One of the claws hits Gabriel hard.

Paralysis Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

And unfortunately Gabriel goes rigid for 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 rounds as he finds the paralysis of this beast is stronger than that of the ordinary ghouls.

Mithas shoots with a flurry of arrows.

Arrow Shot 1: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 1 - 2 = 19
Arrow Shot 2: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 - 2 = 23

Two arrows rip into the creature doing

The snowball strikes the Ghast who freezes from the elemental cold. The two arrows weaken him further and then with a powerful backblow Jor takes a swing with his greatsword slicing into the foul beast and cutting it open like a rotten piece of fruit and sending its foul smelling entrails spilling all over the floor. All of you can't help to choke at the stench unleashed by this thing but you get the feeling that this creature is finally defeated.

End of combat

Quintis takes time to vomit and then say choking a bit, "Thank Eli that this battle is over. You have my thanks in bringing an end to this evil and saving others from these foul creatures."

As for what is in the room there looks to be an old wooden table covered in entrails and with some large butcher's knife caked in blood on top of the table. There is also a pile of offal and fleshy bits at the corner edge of the room. You think you see some half-buried items in that pile as well though.

Ok well so happens there seems to be a few interesting items in the pile so long as you're willing to dig around a bit in poop and goopy body parts. Rather unpleasant way to be digging for treasure. Anyway you find the following items.

A Sea Opal Gemstone in a platinum ring.
A Silver Medallion with a large amethyst.
A Pair of leather bracers with odd writing on them.
A Heavy Shield that looks to be of Dwarven design with the symbol of a warhammer on the front of it. Oddly the metal does not look tarnished despite being down here for who knows how long.

Indeed using detect magic Terevalis sees that the Leather Bracers and the shield radiate magic.

Anyway Terevalis make me Knowledge Arcana checks seperately for both items with a +4 bonus as Cole will assist you with any magical item assessment.

Well now just need to level to 3 before the disease kicks in :)

A few moments pass before Gabriel is able to move again.

"Such a feeling of helplessness. You all have my thanks again. That creature would have devoured me if not for the rest of you."

Gabriel picks up and cleans his blade before sheathing it.

HP: 96 | AC:20 / Touch: 12 / FF: 16 | Init +4 | Perception +12 | Fort: +9 / Refl: +7 / Will: +4

Picking up the hidden treasures with a bit disgusted face as Jor has to handle all the sliminess and unimaginable horrors of feces and body parts on top of the items.

Carrying them with his arms rigidly in front of him, as to avoid letting them items near his body Jor slowly approaches the group "If anyone of you have water or knows water spell now would a good time to use it. These things smell. Any idea what these might be? Most of them seems not so useful to me so you can go ahead and pick what you want. Also I am not going to wear something that has been through some "processing"

Smiling at Gabriel No problem. My sword handling might need a bit work since I am not really used to fight defensively while attacking... but in the other hand I would say that you sure know how to take hits despite all that armor as chuckle escapes Jors lips

Bracers 1d20 + 13 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 13 + 4 = 32

Well then Terevalis is able to identify all the properties on the two items.

The bracers have words written in draconic and seem to be of wizard make, likey someone of the red robes. They have a minor protective enchantment on them. It is a +1 Bracers of Armor.

The shield has an armor enchantment on it making it stronger. The symbol on the front is the warhammer of Reorox so it was likely enchanted by divine magic. The shield also has a property called "Bashing" on it. The shield can perform a shield bash without penalty and does 1d8 damage. It also counts as a +1 magical weapon when used as a shield bash. So basically its a +1 shield that can be used as a +1 weapon. +1 Shield of Bashing.

Anyway Quintis checks for tracks in the room and then says "It appears this may have been the last of them. Nonetheless I will make sure to inform my superiors of this in case there are more lurking about. Now if you do not mind I would like to vacate this chamber. The stench, bleh... sickening."

"I will fight with the shield. I am not agile enough to fight bashing with it and swinging my sword, but a magical weapon is nothing to throw away. Especially with undead running around."

Any objections to Gabriel taking the shield?

Nope

Quintis leads you out of the room back the way you came. You are all relieved to be out of that place and while the sewers are still a smelly place it pales in comparison to the room that you were just inside. Quintis leads you back south through some tunnels and then starts heading west. You pass by a passageway that you can see what leads into a large chamber of some kind. From what your light reveals the room has white webbing smothering the room. You also see a glint of metal from one of the hanging webs.

Quintis says to the group, "I would not go in there. The foundations of that room are unstable and it is infested by numerous giant spiders. I did see some items hanging in the web the last time I scouted the room but I dared not attract the ire of the spiders. Let is continue on to the Enclave shall we?"

Cole says, "Well webs are likely flammable as far as I know. I could burn the spiders out of there with just a single spell"

Quintis says, "I would advise against that. The webbing seems to stabilize the structure of that room. Set a fire in there and it will spread quickly and likely cause the ceiling to collapse."

Yes, let us away to the Enclave. Now that these undead have been dealt with the people of Silvanesti will be safer.

The wizard will tell the knight At the Enclave we have clerics of Quenesti Pah that will be able to take cure of your wounds and see to the bites that were inflicted by the ghast.
